Guest Reviews
- Yuliya (1/5): Dreadful place , it should be $30 a night max - Very scary room with stains and splats on walls, dirty doors and doorframes. You can see that no one cares about the upkeep of this place. No flat sheets so you gotta go under poop color blanket I doubt anyone washes. Flimsy lock, no hair conditioner, furniture from 70s, I could hear the neighbor snore the whole night, I’m sure he heard me too. Cleanliness and sanitation

The bathroom was neat and hygienic. I liked how quiet it was throughout the night. Parking was easy and accessible. The staff were polite and welcoming. It felt like a good place to stay .
- Todd (1/5): Absolutely horrific - I don't think there were bed bugs.
The shower worked.
The AC worked.
The toilet flushed.
There's a liquor store right next to the hotel.
I didn't get shot.
As of a week after my stay, I'm still not showing any signs of serious disease. There's a liquor store right next to the hotel.
I was assigned a room at check in. Here's what I experienced when entering the room:
The AC was turned off so the temperature of the room was in the 80s.
It smelled of curry chicken mixed with cat pee, stewing in 80 degrees for hours or days.
I immediately left to go ask for another room. Unfortunately, I had set my bag down in the room. The staff was nice enough to assign me a new room but I had to retrieve my bag. Upon doing so, I immediately vomited due to the nasty smell. Fortunately for the next guest I was able to do so on the front patio rather than in the room. I suspect the cleaning staff may have overlooked this but maybe the buzzards and rain took care of it.
My new room came complete with a poster taped over the hole in the bathroom door. It had dirt(??!!??) stains on the ceiling and walls. It had a mild scent of smoke / BO / curry. I made the mistake of walking on the fake wood floor without shoes for a couple minutes and it turned the bottom of my feet black.
- Jerrold C (10/5): Comfortable the whole time - This motel ended up being a great choice for my stay. Check-in was quick and stress-free. The room felt cozy and well maintained. I liked how clean the bathroom was, especially the shower. The water pressure and temperature were perfect. Overall, it felt peaceful and comfortable the whole time

- Omar (1/5): -
- Denny (5/5): -
- Agnèle (1/5): This place is a nightmare, don’t go. Booking.com should remove them from their website but although we spent 3 hours on - We couldn’t stay because there was no water in the room. We are still waiting for refund after one week
- Samuel (2/5): - Very unclean room. Unknown splatters all over the walls. Found a used condom behind the dresser.
- Salowa (10/5): - We enjoyed our time there
- Andrew (6/5): Former Knights Inn - Clean comfortable room with no frills. 5 miles from Harper's ferry. Can't beat it for $75/night!
- Debbas (3/5): The receptionist isn’t friendly - The location Nothing
- Joanne (6/5): - The location was fantastic for visiting Harper's Ferry, Sweet Run State Park. Gas and convenience store across street. Proprietors friendly upfront and honest, showed room and told wifi wasn't working before check in.
Frig, microwave in room, many channels on tv. Bathroom clean, bed fine. Minutes from Potomac and Shenandoah rivers plus parks.
Would not recommend to families too small, nothing to do, no food options nearby. Room met my needs, but edges were dirty, damage to wall, bathroom door had a cardboard patch, cracks, walls and ceiling had stains. Outlet cover missing. Its a shame since some fairly simple repairs would do so much for the place. Huge pothole as enter parking lot, but can be avoided. Liquor store next door.
If you're looking for a place to stay while hiking, enjoying the area its very convenient but there's a reason why the price is so cheap. Did not have bugs as others reported.
- nicole (2/5): - Please pick a different place to stay
- leon (2/5): - The room was so bad that i didn't want to lay on the bed and just checked out. Went to another hotel and slept like a baby
- Erin (2/5): - I would strongly advise against staying at this hotel. Upon arrival, we found the room to be dirty, unsanitary, and reeking of urine. It was in no condition to stay in — we immediately left and had to find alternative accommodations at our own expense.
When we contacted management to request a refund, they refused to take responsibility for the condition of the room and denied the request, despite the fact that we couldn’t even stay there due to how unclean it was.
This was an incredibly disappointing experience, and the lack of accountability from the hotel made it even worse. Save yourself the stress and stay somewhere else.
- Amanda (10/5): All Good, Will Be Back - Was exactly what I needed for a solo bday trip to the area. Minimal, friendly, clean. Didn’t mind that it’s obvious the place has been there a while. The parking lot has a huge pothole, which isn’t great. Just drive around it and be grateful for the great price and nature at your doorstep.
- Amanda (2/5): - I did not like it at all. Checked out at 8am and did not stay the second night. Nothing was accessible and the property did not have wifi. The entire listing is a misrepresentation.
- Sonepheth (9/5): Very convienient - Must have been something special in is hay days. A little dated
- Mary Colleen (6/5): - The view was spectacular and I was fortunate enough to hear (not seeing) a fireworks event that echoed through the mountains!
- Eugene (10/5): - The room the electric did not work in the bathroom or one wall of the room. I told the owner and he came and looked and said I will fix it. He played around and the electric for the air went out, then the tv electric went out. He never fixed it
- Ken (2/5): - Sadly, I think this facility should be avoided. It was very dirty and, frankly a bit scary.
- Ravikanth (4/5): - Rooms very old...Poor maintenance. Broken furniture & bathroom fittings. No internet.
- Jamie (2/5): - Room smelt like mold, had bugs, bed uncomfortable, AC kind worked, very out dated
- Jim (8/5): - Nice location within 10 minutes of Harper's Ferry. Gas station store in front and beverage store next door were an added convenience.
- Donna (10/5): Exceptional -
- Marcia (1/5): Didn’t stay! One look & ran for the car! Horrible - I took one look at this place & left immediately Definitely would not pass any kind of health inspection. Seriously dirty No company should ever recommend this place
- Christopher (2/5): - Dead bugs. Blood on bathroom wall. Hair in bed. Vile.
- Madison (4/5): - shower did not work, neighbors where loud and kept us up all night, great staff.
- Ilya (2/5): - Stuff was not friendly. No wifi
- Alexander (2/5): - First, our fault for not reading all the reviews. Only saving grace is the liquor store steps away so you can drink yourself to sleep. However, this place is an absolute dump. I don't think the rooms, besides changing our bedding, are ever done. The floors are sticky, walls are moldy in the bathrooms, and the outlets are a fire hazard. I don't know who was using the lamp shades and curtains as napkins, but it is gross. Have some self respect and at least clean. This is a convenient location, and it could be cute if a little effort was taken. I do not recommend this place to anyone. Sleep in your car before here.
- Michael (1/5): Absolutely disgraceful, wouldn’t recommend to a homeless person. - Absolutely nothing I arrived after a long flight, called to tell them I will be there soon as it was getting late. The person did not speak English and had to get someone else. If you can’t speak English why answer the phone. I arrived and the room was absolutely disgusting, I reported back to the desk that it stinks of smoke and there is cigarette ash on the side. They did not care or offer me another room. Literally nothing was clean. Wasn’t looking forward to the shower as the bathroom was dirty too. I literally slept as much as I could and left as quick as I could, waking up the staff in the morning to hand the card back. This place used to be clean but it seems like the owners nowadays do not care. I wish them the absolute worst future for this business and hope one day someone will take it over and sort all the issues. Never will I ever come back here. I felt sick and was glad to get to my friends the next day to have a good shower.
- Cassandra (4/5): Not like the pictures -
The pics were misleading. It looked like it would be a lot more updated.
The room wasn't very clean. There were mouse droppings on the floor. Only a very thin blanket was provided. The room was freezing even with the heat cranked up to high. Honestly overpriced. My partner and I would have gone elsewhere, but no place else was available
- Savannah (2/5): - Was given a room that was super dirty had blood everywhere hair and bodily fluids. Asked for a different room and it was worse there was bloody razors in the shower blood on the curtain open soaps hole in the floor. Definitely would not recommend. Trying to get a refund.
- Mateen (6/5): - Very nice and friendly staff, very accommodating but the bathroom was never cleaned after previous guest left. I found hairs on the blanket. Microwave was broken.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Check in simple. No hastle, quick & easy. Was able to pay cash. Room wasn’t cleanest at all, outdated but did have clean towels.
- Jennifer (1/5): Bad - Nothing Everything
- Williams (1/5): Horrible Experience- Avoid at all costs! - Absolutely horrible experience. It looked rundown and not kept up. There was a pair of old underwear on the sidewalk. We never got to check-in cause the attendant was missing and didn't answer the phone call. We had to travel to another better hotel down the street. It was a terrible experience and we will never attempt to go there again. I suggest removing them from your site. See above. We never got to check-in. No one was there.
- Chip (2/5): - This used to be a cozy Adventure Base, with a diner and a liquor store nearby. Checking in, had to call a cell phone, a guy off-property came. I tried to cancel my pre-paid Rez but he claimed Expedia demanded he charge me. Id been on the Appalachian Trail for 4 days so I thought I could handle it.. Got to room, I've seen worse, but started shower and couldn't get hot water, neither could see aff. I'm the only guest, and that includes the staff, I'm sure they weren't thinking of firing the expensive boilers for me. It was clear they had no hot water capabilities. Staff kept offering to switch rooms but even in other rooms, they'd have to actually get hot water going to the property. This motel exists as an Expedia scam. If you make Rez, it gets charged and they claim they are powerless to cancel. Ended up taking a taxi to another hotel.
- Gagnon (1/5): Bad -
- Stasha (1/5): The absolute worst - Nothing. It looked like our door was kicked in, smelled like 50 years of cigarette smoke, there were dirty mattresses and springs rotting out in the parking lot. There was dental floss on the nightstand. Every single thing. The guy there was a creep that followed me into the hotel room. Refused to stay here. Haven't received a refund.
- Verified traveler (2/5): Not going back - The shape of the room looks so weird. The bathroom toilet is very small. It looks like it made for young kids. It’s not look very comfortable. I switch to another room and found out it was not clean. No housekeeping clean that room except the bed was made. I was so unsure if they changed it or not.
- Steven (2/5): - Pictures on their website or yours via your link to whatever are either very old or somewhere else. They show a nice breakfast hall and really nice rooms. Nothing in the photos exist. I stayed somewhere else and just forfeited the money.
- Christopher (2/5): - The room was dirty. Piss and private hair all over toilet. Used soap in shower. Blood stain on wall in bathroom. Refrigerator didn't work ac hardly worked . There was weed shaking in every drawer of the dresser. Spider webs .just gross. Sketchy place. Don't go here.
- Buck (2/5): - We payed for the room on the app. However after checking into the room we left. Went down the street and purchased another room. I have stayed in horrible places before but this beats anything i have ever seen.
- Tawn (2/5): - Don't. Just don't
- landyachty (2/5): go elsewhere fast - We arrived before 8 PM, Lobby is closed you have to call a numbeer and wait. We had a prepaid reservation. Guy who wasn;t familiar with english told me the owner sells the rooms to others from the sites like hotels.com. and we had no reservation. Within a few minutes some guy yelled out "I'm leaving they can have this room" We took it (like dummys) as we had paid.
Check out the photos
No shower curtain (of course no towels)
Old posters for curtains
They use Knights Inn signage but no part of the chain.
Boken coffee maker, but nop coffee nor cups or glasses
Outlets with no or broken covers big hazard.
Mold in the bath.
Bed was nice and sheets looked clean. No breakfast or anything as shown in their photos.
- Kevin (1/5): The hotel was appalling. - There was no breakfast. The location was bad.Leaving after cancelling my fifth night. The rooms were filthy. TV and fridge didn’t work. The toilet didn’t work properly. No hot or warm water. There was only one employee who could only book us in. Microwave filthy and insects in the room. Couldn’t lock door . The door jam busted. We couldn’t understand the speech of the employee.
- jennifer (4/5): - Very run down. No blanket or bedsheet. Chain on door broken. Hole in the wall. Toilet ran all night.
- Verified traveler (4/5): This place is a dump! Run! - Took a chance on this place based off some of the recent good reviews and its proximity to Harper’s Ferry. The owners friends and family must have wrote the good reviews because this place is a dump. First off, I had to wait for well over 15 minutes for someone to come check me in, and he only came after I called the hotel. The door to our room barely closed, and didn’t have the safety lock so I wedged the chair against the door as a precaution. There was shampoo bottles left in the shower from the previous guest along with trash in the can and grime and hair in the sink. I made my son sleep on a pillow and blanket from the car because I was seriously questioning the cleanliness. If we had not already paid and absolutely exhausted, we would have left.
- Caitlyn (2/5): don’t let the pictures fool you - we booked 1 night before camping for a few days. We stayed exactly 7 seconds in the room that was covered in mold and maybe the biggest spider this earth has to offer. We did not argue with the front desk. We calmlyi dropped the key and drove 90 minutes to the next available lodging in our price range. I am unsure how a room like that can be offered at all to the public. I enjoy roughing it from time to time but I don’t try and acquire diseases while on vacation.
- Stu (4/5): Quick overnight - Basic overnight bed and bath.
Didn't expect more than we got
Easy access to Harpers Ferry
Cable TV and wi-fi worked
- j0symird (2/5): Nightmare! Don't waste your money - DO NOT waste your money on this place. The pictures provided do not represent the reality of the place. The room was small. Floor was sticky and the room felt and looked dirty. The shower did not have a shower curtain. The sink was on an unfinished piece of plywood and held up by 2 pieces of wood. The bathroom door jammed and had to be pushed shut. I asked for a queen size bed and got a full size bed. The reception doesn't look like the picture at all! Left early in the morning so I didn't see the food but didn't even want to eat there. The place looks old and needs renovating. I booked 2 nights and only stayed 1 because I got there late and I was tired but there was no way I was going to go back. I canceled my 2nd night reservation and they refused to provide a refund. I wouldn't want this to happen to someone else.
- David (1/5): Worst hotel on earth! - Worst hotel I have ever stayed in. In my 54 years, I have never entered a hotel room this filthy. There were layers of dust on everything, black mold in the bathroom, a hole in the wall with a travel brochure taped over it, dirt on the floors, hairs on the shower curtain. Absolutely disgusting.
- Cynthia G (2/5): - Had to wait ten minutes for him to come check us in. Ask for drivers license took copy then spent another 10 minutes looking up something while still looking at my drivers license. Got key get to the room door ajar. Room smelled sheets had been slept in. This place appeared to be being used as rental for for permanent residence. Needless to say we did not stay. Would not recommend this to anyone.
- Lowe (1/5): Bad - Nothing Everything, filthy, it was a no tell motel. We didn't even stay. Checked the room out and immediately returned the keys and left. Smoke saturated room and was refused a refund!
- Brenda (1/5): Bad - The view Wasn't clean at all, stinky also the website said the room was a king size bed but was full size and stinky.
We had to leave without staying for an hour we try to clean up but was to smelly 😞
- Bryan (2/5): - This place is absolutely HORRIBLE. DONT NOT GO!! The worst place I have ever been to in my life!!! Rude front desk, complete disaster of a room and no running water!!! I have all the pictures to show as well. I wouldn't recommend to anybody at any time!!! Ran down, druggy vibe hotel!!! ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING!!!
- Sebulsky (1/5): needs closed down - nothing when u check in the lobby there's like 10 bottles of bug spray sign right there got to the rooms looks like beds were just rolled out of got to the next room looks like they remade the bed's were dirty should check reviews
- Kathryn (1/5): Do not stay here, and cost almost $100! - Nothing Room was damaged, not prepared with supplies, not even toilet paper. Walls were scarred, front door gaps , locks torn off.
Office was kept locked at all times.
Young man at front office tried to fill my concerns, BUT too much.
- Kordell (1/5): Terrible - very poor quality & cleanliness Used soap, cigarette holes on bed cover, no toilet paper, and terrible smell
- Heather (2/5): - Do not stay at this hotel! It is filthy and smells terribly musty. The blanket on the bed had cigarette burn holes, the outlet covers were cracked and unsafe looking. The towels were all damp and there was a tiny bit of toilet paper with no refills. Visible dirt everywhere, not updated whatsoever. We had luck with other low cost motels along the route, but will never roll the dice on a low cost motel again thanks to this place.
- Wicker (10/5): Thanks to the attentive staffs, reasonable rates and beautiful mountain view - I had a fantastic stay at the Hill Side Hotel. The gentleman at the front desk was incredibly attentive and made sure all my needs were met. The room rates were very reasonable, especially considering the stunning mountain views. I highly recommend this hotel for its excellent service and beautiful location. I was a bit disappointed that breakfast wasn’t served.
- Transue (2/5): Horror show - The location was good because there is a good view of the mountains. Too much. What a nightmare. The sheets had not been changed from the previous guests, it was obvious. Seemed there are people who actually live in this motel, undesirables clearly. Every aspect of the room was just dirty or dirty seeming. The refrigerator was broken and the toilet ran all night long. Just horrible. It also had a foul cleaning product odor.
- I449FQjohnp (2/5): Worst ever - Room not cleaned in some time. Broken security locks on main door, musty moldy smell in room upon entering, air conditioner leaking freon and not cooling, active spider webs with spiders in areas of the room, floors showed signs of dead insects and dirt, bathroom was clean, party in the parking lot when we arrived,up to 15 people playing music and dancing, complete with BBQ grill under the walkway, fire hazard. Beer and alcohol present. We were going to leave but there were no vacancies in the area. We both developed breathing difficulties as the night wore on.went outside for fresh air. Several exposed electrical outlets missing plates. Mattresses worn out and uncomfortable. Have traveled all over the country and this is the worst ever. Needs to be closed permanently.
- Kelly (1/5): Very short, uncomfortable - The gentleman in the office was nice. The hotel was run down. We were given two different rooms because the first one the door wouldn’t open and the smoke detector was beeping it was very small and the bathroom did not have a shower curtain. The second room was a little bigger. It had holes in the bathroom walls around the shower. The bed was like sleeping on a board we had to ask for towels the gentleman told us we could take the ones from the first room.
- Joseph (6/5): - You get what you pay for. The check-in was fine, the room had a terrible odor. The heater/air conditioner was very noisy and missing vent pieces. Overall it was a very cheap place to stay, I didn’t have any big issues.
- William (8/5): Very good - Cleanliness Advertised as having Continental breakfast. There was no Continental breakfast.
- Gene (4/5): Run down stay away - The room itself was somewhat clean, quiet and comfortable. But the hotel was rundown, looked like the grass hasn’t been cut for months and there was no breakfast room, they lied about that on their website. They were using the previous owners webpage, the knights inn, pictures. It’s not what it looked like when we got there. The towels had stains and the sink faucet wasn’t bolted down. You had to hold down the faucet just to turn it on. No pride in ownership. We will never stay there again.
- Roy (3/5): Ok if you only plan to sleep and shower. - Nice checkin, clean sheets & towels, hot shower, TV and Refrigerator worked. Quiet. Looked deserted. shower and window curtains were falling down. I was concerned about security with a liquor store adjacent to the rooms.
- Jessica (4/5): Disappointing -
- Sammantha (8/5): Wonderful stay - Beautiful view, close to highway, maybe 3 miles to Harpers Ferry. Would definitely stay there again. Nothing it was great
- Evan (8/5): - Nice property for the price. The roof top bar is really cool and there are good views of the bay and ocean from the pool
- william (8/5): - Hillside is convenient to Harper's Ferry and inexpensive.. A little beat up but clean and safe.. If you are looking for a no frills place to sleep and a hot shower after a long day at Harper's Ferry it's perfect..
- Thomas (2/5): - Probably dirtiest hotel I’ve ever stayed in
- Holly (2/5): - Hotel room had bugs, a strong odor of mildew and the shower was cold. The conditions were so poor that we left a day before required and went to another hotel.
- 5 (6/5): The property was good for us for the location that I was looking for is not a luxury stay which is comfortable one - Property was good for what it was for a quick stop Location was great
- Greg (7/5): Good -
- Lewis (5/5): Passable - It was cheaper & closer to the C&O Toe path then any place around
- Tushita (2/5): - This place is a nightmare irrespective of the price you pay. Highly unsafe and smoky sooty smelly rooms
- Jeremy (2/5): - We did not stay - we found a new hotel after discovering the bed to be sticky.
- Harold (4/5): - Run down - needs lots of TLC and deep cleaning.
- Thomas (8/5): - We used the Hillside before and after taking the MARC train from Brunswick, MD, to Washington, DC, for a few days. It was also our base for exploring Harpers Ferry. It is a simple, clean, and convenient property. Check-in was quick. The A/C was quiet and efficient. We enjoyed mornings and evenings on the covered porch.
- Vanichou (5/5): Passable -
- Jamie (2/5): Absolute dump! - The worst experience I have ever had!!! The room was horrible! The base of the lamp on the bedside table had broken apart and just pushed back together. The lamp shades were cracked and falling apart. The curtain had pinholes in it and was covered in dust and cobwebs. The refrigerator was not completely clean. There was a hole in the wall above the AC unit. The bathroom door had been kicked in previously and barely patched on either side. There was a patch done on the wall outside the bathroom, not painted. There was wadded up wet toilet paper in the corner of the ceiling and the wall above the shower, not sure why? There was dried vomit on the wall next to the bathroom sink and dried blood droplets by the bathroom door inside the bathroom. It was a disaster. I've never seen anything like this before in my life. DO NOT STAY HERE! We did not stay, we demanded a refund and left! They did not give us a refund and I will be contacting Hotels.com.
- William (8/5): - Was convenient place to stay while visiting the area for a weekend getaway. Room was clean and neat and the area was quiet. Would stay again.
