Guest Reviews
- Yvonne (10/5): A perfect motel 5minutes walk from Cowichan village. - 5 minutes walk from village.Large room.Kitchenette.Ocean view across lawn at front. Were able to park our motorcycle right outside the back door.Outdoor chairs to enjoy the sunshine at the front in the morning and the sun out back in the afternoon and evening.Lovely park across the road with picnic tables and nice seaside path into the village.Very friendly front desk and offering free pop and water bottles.Good value for money at this time of year. Nothing
- Berry (8/5): It was a very comfortable stay in a clean room for a great price. - The staff was very kind and helpful. Nothing. It was great.
- Genbrugge (10/5): - De ligging aan het water en de bus stopt aan het hotel Niks van opmerkingen.
- Merry (9/5): Excellent, staff friendly and helpful - I was upgraded to a newly renovated room, it was very nice I can't think of anything
- Lars (10/5): Perfect stop a Cow Bay - Excellent value, nice location and the newly renovated room we got was very nice and comfortable.
And the nice guy at the reception made us feel very welcome. So friendly and always up for a joke. If his boss reads this, give this man a raise.
- Svetlana (10/5): - Sparkling clean, renovated room, kitchenette, balcony with a bay view, nature park across the street, very friendly and accommodating owner
- Quintin (10/5): - Great location near the ocean. Spacious room for my entire family. That we didnt find this place sooner.
- Stuart (10/5): Great motel, helpful man on reception and close to restaurants. - It is right opposite the water and all the rooms have some water view it seems. The room had 2 queen beds which were very comfortable, a small kitchenette which had everything we needed including a toaster and electric jug, fridge, microwave and small 2 burner element.they also have small balconies facing the water. The parking could be a bit tight if it is fully booked.
- Gary (8/5): Overall we really enjoyed our stay here and recommend for short stays. - We arrived on the first night of a multi day bicycle trip. When we arrived we were at first disappointed that there was no secure bike storage. However, the property concierge jumped into action and took good care of our bikes in a spare room overnight. He was very helpful. Rooms are newly renovated and very nice. Beds are super comfortable. Walking distance to the commercial area and across the street from the waterfront. We would stay here again. No dedicated secure storage for bicycles so you will need to confirm with the property manager how they will assist with this.
- Peggy (8/5): Anything we needed was very happily provided by the young gentleman manager - Was “upgraded” to a Very recent ungrade.
We were only there for 1 night. Across the street from the water. A 10 minute walk to restaurant and little store The road got a bit loud with morning traffic
- Shaylene (8/5): -
- Karen (7/5): Price was good. We would stay there again. - Kitchenette was well stocked. Accommodation on the ground floor was good, as stairs without an elevator is not a good option for us. Bathroom had been redone but position of the toilet was too close to the wall, should have been moved out a bit.
Parking right in front of your door was not always an option.
- Sandra (8/5): Comfortable Inn with great location. - Great location. Easy walk to restaurants, across the road from a park. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Newly renovated room with comfortable beds and kitchenette. The windows and patio door could use better and larger window coverings. The blackout drapes were too small(needs another panel) and let too much light in for sleeping. I would also suggest that on the ground level rooms it would be good to have sheer panel drape as well as blackout drapes on the patio doors so people walking by can’t look in.
- Lars (7/5): -
- Pat (9/5): As above. Clean ,friendly, small park in front dog friendly - Location
Clean
Friendly staff
In a newly renovated room No complaints
- Lisa (7/5): -
- Jeff (10/5): Wonderful! - Newly renovated, great view, wonderful hosts. Bonus heron rookery in back. Not a thing.
- Reimer (10/5): A lovely home away from home. - We had a beautifully renovated suite with a lovely view of the water. The suite was immaculately clean, including the bed linens and bathroom towels. Nothing negative at all. We were visiting family in Duncan and it was a picturesque short drive from the Inn.

- Jordy (10/5): - I stayed at the Inn for 4 nights while I was in town for a wildfire bootcamp and I wish I had known about this place when I first started having to make yearly visits to the area.
First off the staff was phenomenal. I've never felt so taken care of anywhere else I've stayed.
I was provided with a fantastic room with a beautiful view of the ocean. It was clean, spacious and the beds were exactly what I needed before running fitness tests that weekend.
The location was perfect with easy access to everything I needed.
At the price, it's a no brainer to stay here instead of any accommodations in sketchy Duncan
- Jane (8/5): -
- Snow (10/5): Highly recommend - Staff excellent beautiful view good pricing
- Sandi (8/5): Highly recommend. Will stay here again when we visit the area. - Lovely location in Cowichan Bay. Comfortable beds. Beautifully renovated room. Very pleasant host. all was good
- Beason (8/5): we'll be back - Short start for us. Everything was great. TV in the next room was loud and on till quite late.
- Clara (10/5): Cute place on the bay. - Location. Room uniqueness in decor and layout. Small bathroom. Didn't like the tiny vanity sink area. Zero room for placing toiletries.
- Jodie (8/5): -
- Shannon (8/5): Lovely stay. Would recommend. - The people were so lovely on check in. The rooms were comfy, clean, and updated. Beautiful location down by the water, right across from a lovely estuary. So peaceful. It is a motel so I was expecting some level of noise outside but I guess the doors were thin because voices, footsteps, car noise, etc all came through pretty loud into the room. The wifi was bad enough that the smart TV in the room was completely non functional. Ah well. I was out walking around any way :)
- Dilys (8/5): Beautiful location, quiet setting, nice room. - I was initially told that no sea view rooms were available but when I checked in I was upgraded to a sea view room and it was a newly renovated room with a king bed. Really nicely decorated It was OK as was
- Karissa (10/5): Excellent and peaceful - I was travelling for work and decided to stay here after reading poor reviews on other budget motels. The reviews here are accurate its a great little motel. The front desk staff was lovely (asian man) and he put me in one of the newer rooms facing the ocean and it was fantastic. The beds are unbelievably comfortable. I felt safe as a solo female traveller and will definitely be staying here again. The price is great and exceeds expectations for a 2 star hotel Nothing to say
- Janet (3/5): Not our first choice for the future… - The location is this property’s major benefit. The rooms are newly renovated, modern and clean. The beds and bedding were clean and comfy. This Inn is also pet friendly. The walls and ceiling are paper thin and you can hear your neighbours on all sides - tvs on all night, patio doors opening and closing all night and the staff were unable to resolve the noise coming from all around us. Terrible sleeps as a result. Try and get a top floor unit so at least there’s no one above you.
- Lucy (9/5): Quick overnight stay - very good - Ease of booking in
The room was very modern and well equiped Bed could have been bigger
- Ian (10/5): Clean, quiet, and comfortable with very friendly service at the front desk! - Great location in a quiet oceanfront community, clean and comfortable room with nice updates, and friendly host!
- Gemma (10/5): -
- Susser (10/5): - Very helpful staff. All of them are delightful too interact with. It's a beautiful place, nice and quiet. Right in the ocean. A good place to find some peace. I highly recommend it.
- Richard (8/5): This was a very nice place to rest up on our road trip with extra friendly and helpful staff. - The friendly and very helpful staff and the nice location. A desk or table would be nice. The bathroom renos are nice but the sink is too small and impractical.
- Jan (9/5): Such a cute motel. Right on the water and the staff are so kind and friendly. - The staff at the front desk were so attentive and kind. Very friendly.
- Chris (9/5): - Very peaceful Sraff are very welcoming.
- Roland (10/5): - The prices were reasonable. The staff are friendly and accommodating.
We liked the location. Quaint village nearby.. Nothing.
- Zoe (9/5): Great locations, quiet, comfortable beds, super hospitality! - Great locations, quiet, comfortable beds, super hospitality!
- Janice (9/5): I'll be back! - Cheery, airy and beautiful view of Cowichan Bay. Ocean view patio! Host was very helpful, and friendly. Easy check in , check out. Walking distance to the Cowichan Bay village which is always fun to explore - great little stores and marinas.
- Chris (8/5): Very restfull -
- Tessie (9/5): Great little boutique hotel - Super friendly staff, beautifully modern renovated room and bathroom! Exceeded all expectations. I will book again for any friends and family. Heard some neighbor noise through the wall but didn't affect overall stay
- Jennifer (8/5): Gentleman at the front desk was great. When we needed a second room one night they were quick to accommodate. Rooms were - Great location, walkable down to the pier and shops. The room we were in was recently renovated and it was great. We had a two queen bed room with a kitchenette on the second floor. Big connected TV. Small patio looking out to the bay. Parking in front of rooms and more behind the building. Only down side, was where people decide to smoke, occasionally the air intake would be drawing in second hand smoke, not something that can really be changed by the property. I loved my stay.
- Joseph (8/5): -
- Shawn (9/5): Weather could have been better, otherwise value for money. Recent reno. - Great location. Plenty of food amenities nearby. Management very accommodating. Small issues outweighed by value for 3 day stay.
- Deborah (6/5): Noise rooms and staff but too much traffic noise. - Check in was easy and front desk super friendly. The room was nicely spacious and clean with decent amenities (fridge, micro, kettle). Nice to have the ocean view. Too much fragrance. The room smelt perfumey and the towels and sheets had a scent to them. With only single pane windows and being so close to the road the traffic noise was horrible. Not good for sleeping. The comfortor on the bed is also very thin.
- Meghan (10/5): -
- Nicole (9/5): - Very nicely renovated with a cozy stylish vibe and pretty view. Welcoming atmosphere. Nice soap and shower. For the price, amazing. Walkable area near excellent bakery. The bed was way too firm for me and I could hear the neighbours alarm clock and music. Walls are a bit thin.
- MacMillan (9/5): -
- Chris (8/5): -
- Gregg (8/5): -
- sonya (9/5): We had a great stay, front desk staff very kind and helpful. We will stay here again! - We were pleasantly surprised. The price was very reasonable for a newly reno'd kitchenette room, very comfortable and clean. Close to the beach. We would stay here again and will recommend it to family and friends. Motel style makes it feel dated.
- Nicholas (6/5): - it was fine but pricey. breakfast included
- James (9/5): Friendly, affordable stay. - The service was great. Very friendly and hospitable. The complimentary water was a nice bonus. Can't say nice enough things about the night desk staff. The tub and room mirror needed some cleaning(lots of fingerprints on mirror). There was a stain of some sort on the carpet at the foot of one of the beds.
- Margaret (5/5): The room was adequate but very "tired" and somewhat dirty in places. Great hosts though. - The staff and owners could not have been nicer or friendlier. They were just lovely. We were glad to have a place that accepted our dog, too. It had a full kitchen with the supplies needed. The location is grand with a beautiful view. The facility was quite "tired." There were many (if not most!) things that needed to be repaired or replaced. The whole unit needed a "deep clean" too. There were no insects or other vermin, but there was dirt in many places and the floors, walls and doors had a lot of grime--especially in the places that were not cleaned between guests--like the corners, baseboards, etc. We felt rather sorry for the lovely family that seems to be running this inn. There is so much to do to bring it up to a good standard that it must feel overwhelming. The hospitality industry is very difficult and they are trying very hard.
- Ailing (9/5): - View is good
- Emily (8/5): -
- Shannon (2/5): -
- Ashley (10/5): - The staff was incredible! Very attentive and happy to help whenever needed Nothing!
- Cecilia (10/5): It’s nice walking in the waterfront and enjoy the sunset, just 5 min from the hotel. - Free bottle of water and drinks
- Mervin (7/5): hope you are able to continue the renovations. - It's the perfect central spot for our local visiting excursions.
- Marilyn (9/5): The drinks supply is really grear. - Front Desk staff - Michael is very accommodating. will be great if the room wi be renovated
- Janet (9/5): -
- Warren (10/5): -
- Angela (8/5): - Staff was friendly and helpful.
- Yi-Te (10/5): We had an absolutely wonderful stay. - Michael, the staff, went out of the way to help us. The facility is a bit dated.
- Gemiliano (9/5): -
- Claude (8/5): -
- AJ (9/5): It was quiet, clean, and close to the water. - The room was extremely clean and the owner very friendly and hands-on Key entry, prefer card entry
- ruben (8/5): -
- Benjamin (10/5): -
- Heinz (10/5): Fully satisfied - The place is in a beautiful location and the facility is very nice and clean it is also very welcoming and I will definitely be returning
- Chris (8/5): I was happy with the room. -
- Richard (10/5): - Friendly service.
- Murray (10/5): We will be back. - Wessex definitely has new management / ownership.
We stayed here years ago and it was an unwelcoming disaster. This time it was perfect! Really appreciated all the renovations and bedding. The room was spotless. We stayed with our dog and they were very accommodating.
- Brittany (10/5): - Excellent service clean and comfy room
- Chakrabarti (9/5): -
- Aly (10/5): - Lovely staff and nice updated room with balcony. Very clean and comfy bed!
- ODELLE (8/5): Lovely -
- THAIDRA (8/5): Last-minute travel to Vancouver Island - The staff was very friendly and welcoming. There were issues such as my wheelchair not being able to clear any doorways. The place is older, and the doorways were narrow, preventing my wheelchair from getting through. Also, there were issues with the TV and microwave. Staff did their best to fix them, but it was a recurring problem that we eventually accepted and did without.
- Matthew (10/5): - Very nice location.
- Hilbach (8/5): -
- Ashley (10/5): - Great place nice people
- Fiona (8/5): A nice place to stay, easy walk into the village - comfortable beds. - The two people I dealt with at reception were professional, helpful and friendly. Not much!
- Stefanie (2/5): The smell was too strong,I didn't enjoy it. - Nice view of ocean. And people very nice. The SMELL was so strong from the cleaning supplies. It burned my eyes and I had to open all windows and wipe everything down, and it still smelled so bad.
Highly HIGHLY recommend changing your cleaning products. I will not stay there again, or tell my friends.
- Natalie (8/5): - The front desk person was exceptional. Very friendly and helpful. Accommodated every request happily and even offered to help with our bags. Couldn’t have been any better.
- Bill (9/5): -
- Susan (9/5): - We loved our stay. We were in one of the newly renovated rooms and it was lovely. Very nicely decorated, clean and with a well appointed kitchenette. And the staff is amazing - super friendly and inviting.
- Mai (8/5): -
- Adrian (9/5): - Some rooms are very nice renovated. We had this time an old room and it was just ok. But I know all rooms are going to be renovated soon.
- Maria (3/5): Dissapointing - The location is spectacular. From my window and balcony I looked directly onto Cowichan Lake. Very Nice
The room was cleaned well. The room smelled moldy. I had the window open the whole time I was there. Around the bathtub there was mold. The faucets in the bathroom were not working properly. Wallpaper hanging off the wall.
Because I am a smoker, I was looking for a room with balcony, which I got at the Wessex. When I got there I found out that smoking on the balcony is not permitted. I wish I would have known that before. Smokers are allowed in an area behind the building, which is not always lit, and therefore dark and to me it is worrysom.
I asked to move out the next day and asked for refund of the days remaining. I was told there would be a $ 250.00 charge. So I stayed. I do not recommend this place
- Ian (8/5): -
- Liz (7/5): - We did get an ocean view suite, which should be a bonus, but unfortunately the loud sea lions kept us awake. After booking through Booking.com we were supposed to have a full kitchenette with an oven, and a sitting area. What we did get was a small coffee maker, kettle, beer fridge and a small microwave. Thought we weren't actually planning on cooking, we brought food, and it would have been nice to sit in a sitting area. We didn't have the room that was in the online photo.
- Frederic (7/5): Convenient one night stop - The location is good. There is parking on site. Beds are comfortable. The rooms are large. The late check-in is easy. Old building, needs a coat of paint and a general modernization. Price is currently high considering lack of upkeep.
- Justin (8/5): - Towels, lines, comfortable, location Bathroom, finishings
- Frank (9/5): - Very clean although dated. Front counter staff were very friendly and attentive. Bed was comfortable and the balcony was a nice touch.
- Beverly (9/5): Enjoyed our time there - Location and price, cleanliness.
- Jaqueline (10/5): - Customer service was excellent! Would definitely stay here again, lovely room right on the water and less than 10min walk to the restaurant area :)
