Guest Reviews
- keith (10/5): - Very friendly staff
- Austin (10/5): - Beautiful Ryokan near Nishiki market. The hosts are very friendly, and the area is super walkable.
- Nicholas (10/5): - This property, the owners and the staff were all wonderful. Try the traditional breakfast, it is a must do. The property is charming, the size of the room is a great value and everything is clean and orderly. The location is superior, close to Nishiki Market, high end shopping and only about a 10 minute walk to public transportation. Many good food choices close by from small authentic restaurants to the many food stalls in Nishiki Market Taxis as very reasonable in Kyoto, so feel free to use them if you don’t wish to walk This property is highly recommended.
- YuTing (10/5): - Super super friendly stuff! Great location for walking around the market. we had a short stay in Kyoto so sleeping on the floor was not a big problem. Great to experience Japanese culture. The breakfast was Wowing and festive. Highly recommended.
- Damon (10/5): Comfortable Ryokan in Kyoto - Very friendly and sweet couple running the ryokan. The made you feel like you were home. The ryokan was very clean and the rooms were spacious. We appreciated the private bathroom and also used the public bath. They provided hot water and tea along with wonderful cookies. We really like the location which was adjacent to Nishiki Market. We would definitely stay here again.
- David M (10/5): Great Location - Very friendly and considerate. Great property in a FANTASTIC location. The room was so comfortable!
- JENA (10/5): - The owners are so nice and thoughtful. Always greeting us on our return. The public bath is nice and the breakfast is delicious. The location is perfect. Very close to Nishiki market and walkable to the Gion. We always enjoy our stay here and can’t wait to return.
- Hana (10/5): - It was so nice. I went with 4 of my friends (5 including me). The place wasn’t so big, pretty small inn. The old man and old lady welcomed us extremely kindly and were engaging in conversations. They try their very best speaking English so they can appeal to the foreigners and I thought that was very nice. The public bath was also small, but was well taken care of, I had a nice bath and well rested sleep. Inside the rooms we were provided with Yukata, very comfortable to sleep in. They even offer snacks as a freebie on the table inside the room. Next to the Nishiki Market. Overall, such an amazing place. I would definitely book again if I ever go back to Kyoto!
- Alexandra (10/5): - The owners were lovely and the hotel was in a very good location. Walkable distance from the station and market.
- Samantha N (10/5): - Thank you, Yuko and Akiko!!!
- Georg (10/5): - Great ryokan
- Stephanie (10/5): - A very comfortable and traditional stay for our Japan trip. Great breakfast too!
- Mario (10/5): - This was an amazing place! We had never stayed in a Royal con before, and very glad we chose this location. The owners were extremely friendly, and the room was very comfortable. We enjoyed the traditional breakfast, and access to the public bath (a must try experience). I highly recommend this hotel.!
- Henry (10/5): - The hosts were wonderful and the location close to food, shopping , transportation and Kyoto attractions. It was hard to get the room temperature to be comfortable for me, that’s probably the only issue I had.
- Jim (10/5): - Absolutely incredible property and staff. Super close to everything as well. I would recommend this place to anyone interested in staying in a ryokan in Kyoto.
- Andrew (10/5): - It was my first time in Japan, so Kyo-no-Yado Kagihei was my very first ryokan experience. I stayed for a few days and loved every moment of it. The Japanese style room was very comfortable and cozy. I appreciated the daily restock of tea, cookies, and bottled drinks. The property is located in a very convenient location as I was able to go sightseeing, shop, and even just wander around Kyoto to appreciate the slow vibe. Tomo and Yuko, the owners of the ryokan, were so sweet and kind to me. I felt so welcomed and at home. The entire staff is just as gentle and considerate. Highly recommend this property. I already miss everyone (and the Japanese breakfast!).
- Anik (10/5): - Très bel accueil, belle chambre sobre et spacieuse. Idéalement situé. Service impeccable. Excellent rapport qualité-prix.
- Natalia (10/5): Quaint Traditional Japanese Hotel - This ryokan exceed all expectations . The two owners of the house, a couple, were the sweetest people. Super helpful and they knew english. The rooms were so cool in traditional style and the public bath was cool to see. I will say personally i found the beds to be a bit too firm, but my travel companions thought they were better than some hotel beds. So it is just personal preference but i’d stay here again. Loved the traditional breakfast we had and the laundry service is phenomenal, you pay the lady owner and she does it for you! Overall great place and the location was amazing, walking distance from all the shopping.
- Heather (10/5): - Second time staying here.
Loved it again.
Will stay here again next time in Kyoto.
- Andrew (10/5): - The staff were extremely welcoming and nice. Best service I’ve ever received at a hotel!
- Arturo (10/5): - Excellent to enjoy a traditional ryokan
- Harvinder (10/5): - Great experience!
- Lilliana (10/5): - This ryokan exceeded our expectations in so many ways! Rooms are pretty large, shower is separated from toilet and sink so it made it easier for me and my daughter to get ready and go about our daily routine.
Location couldn’t be better. Two blocks away from the famous by Nishiki market, 10-15 minutes away from Kyoto station and walking distance to restaurants, bars, shopping and anything else you can think of. Great location to explore the city and it’s temples (not walking distance but easy to access if you buy hop-on/hop-off tickets since there’s a stop a few blocks away from the hotel.
The owners run the hotel so we saw them first thing in the morning, when getting breakfast, and at night, when we returned to the hotel. Breakfast here is a HUGE highlight, but you need to be willing and looking forward to experiencing a genuine Japanese breakfast, sometimes with flavors you never tasted before. It is majestically served in a private room, so the moment we walked in, the table was served and ready for us. I definitely recommend this hotel and I’ll book my stay here whenever we go back to Kyoto.
- Eduardo (8/5): Ryokan experience in Kyoto - Excellent service great place to have a traditional Ryokan experience, location is walking distance from some attractions and markets. Just be aware that is not a conventional hotel, you’ll need to follow some rules like be back before 11:00pm or leave your room keys (even safe key) at the lobby when you’re not there.
- Courtney (10/5): - We were welcomed into this home like family from the very start. They were so kind, the absolute best hosts. I absolutely recommend adding the traditional Japanese breakfast option to your stay too! It was so great to experience that side of Japanese culture that you normally don’t get as a tourist. Location is great, really convenient with plenty of things in walking distance.
- Sally (10/5): - Amazing stay with the loveliest hosts. Felt very looked after. Traditional style rooms, yummy breakfast, very conveniently located.
We enjoyed our stay very much.
- Olubunmi Dionne (10/5): - Excellent place to stay.
- Rachel (10/5): - Everyone is so kind, and speaks good English. Breakfast was very good
- Julia (10/5): - This ryokan was beyond my expectations. The photos doesn’t do justice at all.
The ryokan has everything you will need and is super comfortable and quiet. The owners and very sweet and kind and always help with everything.
The place is next to the Nishiki market which is very convenient to grab anything fresh to eat. Next time in Kyoto will definitely stay here again, Arigato!!
- Reilly (10/5): - Lovely
- Will (10/5): - The owner was so nice and greeted us upon arrival. It felt like an authentic experience staying in this ryokan… it’s also like a 10 second walk to the bustling market which was really cool. I recommend this hotel and I’d stay here again.
- Wai fan (10/5): - The staff are so friendly and helpful and speak very well English. The place is so clean and dust free! It’s a well maintained facility with hot drinks, public bath and laundry service. My child loved it. And the place is only 1 min walk from Nishiki Market. I wished I booked more days.
- Simon (10/5): - Perfect stay !
We booked 7 night in this beautiful ryokan and really enjoyed our expérience. The hosts were very kind and welcoming. I The ryokan is also well situated. We recommand without any hesitation!
- Swetambaran (10/5): - Was a delightful ryokan with exceptional service. Naturally it's a little older than most modern hotels, but an excellent experience. The owners, were delightful and extremely accommodating.
- Belinda (10/5): Traditional hotel stay - Lovely stay in Family Home.
Host and family went above and beyond our expectations.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Best place to stay in Kyoto! - Can’t recommend this place enough! Everything was fantastic, we stayed for 2 nights and absolutely loved it! They provided us with Yukata to wear inside the property, they were warm and really elevated the traditional Japanese Ryokan experience! We also had the breakfast and I definitely recommend it, I’m not much of a breakfast person and I tend not to eat when I go sightseeing, so it was the perfect set up to have a proper meal to start the day and it kept me full for a long time. The hostess was also incredibly kind, so nice and helpful with suggestions and information, and it’s actually her home as well! The place was absolutely beautiful, it’s clear they put a ton of work into it and was such a nice relaxing atmosphere after running around everywhere all day!
The location itself is great, you’re right next to Nishiki market and the main shopping street in Kyoto, so bus stops aren’t that far either, maybe a 5-10 min walk? Even though it’s near some of the most popular shopping, the neighborhood itself is very quiet and the noise tends to stay within the market itself. If you’re looking for a traditional Japanese inn I can’t recommend staying here enough, the futons were very comfortable and the deep bathtub was an absolute delight!
- Ilo-Mai (10/5): - A charming traditional Japanese guesthouse, owned by a wonderful couple who did everythig to make our stay pleasant. .The place was beautiful, clean, just perfect.
- Stephen (10/5): - Lovely owner, a hidden gem in the heart of Kyoto
- Sandy (10/5): - We really enjoyed our stay here. It's clean, quiet and in a convenient location. Would stay here again
- Jessica (10/5): - Great location. Great room. Very friendly and informative staff. Great bathroom with AMAZING shower. I would definitely return!
- Jaron (10/5): - Relaxing place for those that want a Ryokan style accomodation. Highly recommend as the owner is very helpful and lovely.
- Lubov (10/5): - The family that hosted my stay made me feel as a part of the family. Polite, gentle and very caring and service oriented.
- Frederick (10/5): - Our fourth stay at this ryokan reconfirmed why we love it. Comfortable, nice room & breakfast, great location, extraordinarily nice & helpful staff.
- Ryan (10/5): - Owner was very kind and attentive. This is a great place to stay if you are looking for a traditional room in Kyoto. There is also plenty to do in the area around, as you are near Nishiki market here. The only thing to note is that there is an 11pm curfew here.
- Ubhayapriya (8/5): - Property fine but room smelled a bit. Could be the tatami mats?
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great Stay! - We loved our stay at Kagihei! The owners and all the staff we met were super friendly and kind. Highlights included the public bath and the exquisite kaiseki breakfasts they served each morning. It was also really helpful that they had a laundry available and very reasonably priced, as we came to Kyoto after a week in Tokyo without access to laundry! Facilities were also extremely clean, and we loved being right next to Nishiki market.
- jane L (10/5): - This is a lovely accommodation in a very convenient location. It serves a very nice Japanese breakfast. I would stay here again when in Kyoto.
- Chin Chuan (10/5): - Easy access to all locations. Quiet and safe location and hosts who speak good English and is helpful with direction. Clean and well kept ryokan.
- CLAUDIO (10/5): - Our stay was great all around. We had the Japanese Ryokan experience yet on a western friendly manner. Our room had a regular shower and toilet, while at the same time there was onsen available. The owners were extremely kind; Japanese breakfast delicious; tatami sleeping experience very good; and the surroundings were very convenient. Easy to walk around the market and stores nearby. The river side is close as well where we found a great restaurant. Gion is also close. We hope we had more time to go to the bars and restaurants in that area. There are subway stations nearby where you can transport to the many sites to see in Kyoto. Price was also more reasonable compared to other options. The Ryokan is not very large and there should be other ones with more fancy facilities, gardens and views. However, since we were going to be sightseeing most of the day, this was a pretty good option to us. We are thinking on another trip back to Japan next year and we will definitely repeat this Ryokan.
- Lisa (10/5): - Beautiful little ryokan right near the Nishiki market. The hosts are amazing - friendly and helpful. The service is exceptional. Rooms are well equipped and very clean and well maintained. We tried the traditional breakfast which was amazing. Absolute gem! Will definitely stay here again the next time we come to Kyoto.
- Ragnhildur (10/5): - Such friendly proprietors
- Julian (10/5): - Great traditional little inn in super convenient location near the market. The owners are very kind & caring & the Japanese Breakfast is memorable!
- Endrawati (10/5): - One of the best and unique experience I have when traveling to a foreign country. The owners are very friendly, accommodating and helpful in many ways. Will definitely stay here again.
- Karen (10/5): - My husband and I had a wonderful time. The area was surprisingly close to shopping and tourist areas. Like less than a half a block away. Public transportation was close by. Many temples and shrines to visit. I always felt safe.
Side note: if you have allergies I suggest you purchase allergy meds. I discovered I had an allergic reaction to the mattes. When I opened the balcony door for the night the fresh air soothed my sneezing and coughing reaction. This was my first time visiting Japan I did not considered that I might have allergies. Live in learn. I would visit and stay at this place again just with meds for allergies.
- Ilana (10/5): - Wonderful opportunity to experience a traditional Japanese ryokan — tatami mats on the floor, futon on floor for your bed, a full Japanese breakfast with fish, ruce, miso soup and more, a small onsen (public bath), and yukata robe to wear to the bath or breakfast. The owner Yuko is so warm and welcoming that this felt like home.
The location is terrific — half a block from the fantastic Nishiki food and fish market, about three blocks from a huge intersection with buses, subway, department store, and the city’s biggest shopping arcade, yet the ryokan itself was quiet and peaceful.
It’s about a ten minute walk to the trendy Ponto Cho strip of restaurants and the lovely river, and a 15 minute walk across the river to Gion. But there are lots of restaurants even closer, including Starbucks and Tullys if you need a US-style coffee fix. :-)
If you need a Western style luxury hotel, this is not for you. But if you want authentic Japanese hospitality and culture, I strongly recommend it.
- Dung (10/5): - Amazing stay and the staff was very attentive and friendly. Love their traditional Japanese breakfast as well. Absolutely recommend to anyone looking for a traditional experience in Kyoto.
- Jennifer (10/5): - The property was exactly as pictured. The location was perfect. The one negative was that the air conditioning didn’t work in our room. The owners apologized repeatedly and it wasn’t horribly hot, I just really like it very cool for sleeping so that was not great for me. But the owners were SO nice. I can’t say enough positive things about them. I would recommend to anyone wanting to try a ryoken experience.
- Andrew (10/5): - Great location near a covered market and several temples. Very friendly staff. The traditional breakfast experience was excellent.
- Gregory (10/5): - The property provided a true Japanese experience for western travelers. The staff were friendly and helpful and the breakfast was a thing of beauty. I would definitely recommend this property.
- David (10/5): - The staff was very friendly and helpful. Coffee and tea always available. Convenient to Nishiki Market near the Gion district.
- Lourdes (10/5): - Our stay was very restful. It felt like a very traditional experience, and we loved the morning breakfast, and onsen.
- ANDREINA (10/5): - Excellent attention! Good breakfast! Great location! Traditional!
- Ian (10/5): - Ideal location, friendly and attentive owners and staff, perfect for short ryokan stay in Kyoto.
- Adriana (10/5): - Lovely host/family staff.
Amazing location, it’s just by the Nishiki market.
Great experience.
- Kristin (10/5): - The staff were so friendly and nice!
- David (10/5): A very welcoming and pleasant stay… - A family run guesthouse/ hotel that offers excellent service in a more traditional Japanese style of accommodation. The owner and staff are extremely friendly and attentive.
- Sawanthana (10/5): - Ryokan Kagihei is a real gem in the centre of Kyoto. It was quiet and extremely efficiently and professionally run by the owners and their staff. Apart from the excellent location, the property is equipped with useful amenities. If these plus the ‘spa’ are not enough, the breakfast will certainly leave you feeling happy and at home!
- Elika (8/5): Centrally located family-run ryokan - Kagihei is a family-run ryokan that's quite centrally located on a quiet street in the main shopping district of Kyoto. It's easily walkable to Shijo and Gion and the Imperial Palace, and is two blocks from Nishikiji Market.
The building is new, but the room interiors are traditional style. There is one stack of rooms that is very dark, so if you are planning to stay inside don't get those rooms. (The other 4 stacks seem fine.) The breakfast is excellent and the sento baths are small but nice. There's not much of a garden. The ryokan closes at 11pm, so it's not a good place if you want to stay out late.
- Kelvin (10/5): Very good - Very friendly japanese owner. First time staying in a ryokan, good experience. Enjoy the in house free onsen for 3 days.
- Siavash (10/5): - Excellent service and friendly staff. The location is convenient to many restaurants and shops. The hotel is also clean and in great condition. Overall very happy and would come again.
- Austin (10/5): - Wonderful place and great location. Highly recommmed!
- Teresa (10/5): First time in Kyoto! - Amazing little Ryokan in Downtown Kyoto! A stones throw from the Nishiki Market. The owners (husband and wife) are incredibly nice and their breakfast is amazing! The rooms are very comfortable and the location is great. Super close to subway and the main high end street with designer shopping, along with tons of restaurants and malls. Such a great place to stay if you want to experience a low key no frills Ryokan. Will definitely recommend to family and friends. Thank you!
- Pang Ngean (10/5): - Very nice people and excellent location
- Nima (10/5): - The location was fabulous and the space was great. The owners were incredibly kind and helpful.
Not necessarily a flaw, but there were some things that were showing a little age. But that didn’t affect my experience.
I highly recommend this ryokan to anyone and I would gladly stay here again!
- Antonio Junior (10/5): - We had an excellent 3 night stay at Ryokan Kagihei. Yuko and the staff were friendly and went above and beyond to make our stay as comfortable as possible. Their english is great, too. Our room was spacious, clean and had everything we needed. We had the set breakfast and it was delicious, It is definitely worth adding! It is located in a quiet street and just around the corner is the bustling Nishiki market. A little further are the general stores, shopping area and public transportation. You can’t go wrong with this Ryokan! We hope to return on our next trip to Kyoto.
- Ryan (10/5): - The owner was lovely and thoughtful. The Japanese Breakfast was delicious and a cultural experience on it's own.
The Onsen facilities were first rate.
- Dilianna (10/5): Tradition, Great value and exceptional location - Great place to stay in Kyoto for a few days. Excellent service. Traditional feel and wonderful value! Close to everything.
- Georg Soeren (10/5): Great ryokan - Great ryokan, very close to the Nishiki market. Very nice bath. Fantastic breakfast (traditional Japanese).
- Michael (10/5): - It was our first time staying in a Ryokan and the staff was welcoming and spoke good English. They gave us a choice of times for breakfast, and told us about the spa. At the room, we were given Yukatas to wear during our tea service. The family running the Ryokan gave us good suggestions for shopping and dining in the area. Our stay was relaxing and I would stay here again.
- Abel (10/5): - This was a terrific find! Yuko was most helpful especially with information to getting around. Both she and her husband were very warm and hospitable. The breakfast was beautifully prepared, and exceptionally good. Our room was comfortable with all amenities and even snacks provided. We enjoyed our stay and look forward to coming back.
- Catherine (10/5): - Beautiful rooms and onsen. Staff were amazing and could not do enough for us. Breafast was out of this world. Host was friendly helpful and amazing. Situated very close to alot of activities and intresting places
- Sidharth (10/5): - The staff is very friendly and helpful. The breakfast is delicious. I’m very happy to stay at this traditional Japanese Ryokan. Thank you to all the staff. See you next time.
- guy (10/5): - Great place we recommend for Kyoto and to get a true Rayokan experience
- John (8/5): - A traditional Japanese ryokan, the front entrance is steps from the entrance to the legendary Nishiki Market, which was a treat. It was also centrally located for getting around.
There is a lovely public bath on the lower level (which was usable by one person/couple/family at-a-time during COVID lock-downs). The ambiance is relaxed and, as a business traveler in Sept 2022, I believe I was the only guest in the ryokan during my brief stay.
The proprietress was very helpful with directions and information, as well as getting a load of laundry done one day in-house. It was a bit strange being there all alone but, having Kyoto practically tourist-free was a once-in-a-lifetime experience I will remember always!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Great experience, good breakfast, good location, will stay there again
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Excellent service. Also located in a great spot, being on the doorstep of Nishiki Markets and close to numerous dining options.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - This ryokan is in a great location next to Nishiki market, the shopping arcades and 3 stations (Karawamachi, Gion, Karasuma). You can easily get to all the near by attractions by walking, bus or train.
Most importantly, the hosts are lovely, there's an onsite indoor onsen bath, breakfast was great and the room was good.
I'd definitely stay again.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - It was an authentic experience. Everyone took care if all of our needs.
- MB (10/5): - This property staff were friendly, the rooms were clean and the breakfast spread was delicious. The staff was extremely helpful and were able to accommodate various dietary needs for breakfast - vegetarian and gluten free. Would highly recommend this ryokan for families. Location is central and close to stations, markets and restaurants.
- John (10/5): Beautiful Ryokan within steps of Nishiki Market St - The owners of this establishment were so kind and friendly! We got to checkin a few hours earlier than their actual checkin time, but we were able to drop off our bags and come back once they were ready. Once we got checked in, one of their employees actually took our bags up and then proceeded to walk through the amenities in the traditional Japanese room (sorry, I forgot what our room's name was!). We got our room with the traditional Japanese breakfast meals, which by far is the highlight (lovely selection of protein, whole grains, veggies, and fruits -- all part of a complete breakfast!)
It's also literally a half block away from Nishiki Market Street. All sorts of grab and go snacks and cute souvenirs.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Helpful front desk fluent in English. Pleasant setting. Reasonably priced. Excellent location. Recommended.
- Steven V. (10/5): perfect kyoto location - a lovely ryokan experience in a perfect location. just next to nishiki market, shopping, restaurants and transit. short walk to Gion and other sites. Lovely hosts, relaxing onsen and very comfortable room.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Staff insanely friendly, very clean and cute property. Stayed with two friends in the same room, plenty of space.
- Linda&Fred (10/5): - Kagihei Ryokan is very conveniently located a few minutes walk from Nishiki Market and one of Kyoto's main shopping streets/arcades and transport arteries. The tatami rooms are very comfortable, and the Japanese breakfast is delicious and well presented. One of the ryokan's main benefits is its very friendly and helpful staff. This was our second stay here, because we liked the ryokan so much when we stayed there last year.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Advance warning on condition of minor damage - Repairs could have been done on a cardboard panel. We could have been told of this even if it is not repaired instead of wondering whether we were the ones who made the hole in the cupboard
- Albert (10/5): - I recently stayed here for 3 nights, and overall, the experience was great. This was the first time I had stayed at a ryokan. The owners of this ryokan are super friendly and accommodating. The breakfast was great and had variety from day to day. The location was also very convenient, given that it is close to Nishiki Market and shopping. But at the same time it is in a fairly quiet location that's not too busy. Overall, I really enjoyed my stay here and would recommend.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Very friendly staff, comfortable room, and the breakfast was amazing.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Centrally located, clean, great hosts. Good experience of traditional Japanese dwelling and culture.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - When we arrived, they treated us with open arms! The room was really big and clean. There's a public bath in the second floor, but there's also a private bathroom in the rooms
- Laura (10/5): Beautiful space in Kyoto - We loved our stay here. Location just steps from Nishiki market was great -- we were able to walk to everything we came to Kyoto to do. The room was spacious with enough space for our 3 futons, the table, and extra space for our luggage. The second floor Japanese bath was spotless and serene (can't imagine the reinforcement that took!). The breakfasts were beautifully served and delicious. But most of all, our hosts had a warmth and sweetness that made us feel at home for our 3 day stay. Highly recommended.
