Guest Reviews
- martha (8/5): Nice place for a good price. - The onsen and diner. You can use even the private onsen without reservation which was very Nice. It’s a bit old and stuffy. Although it s very clean.
- Redrackham78 (9/5): -
- Matthias (9/5): - Excellent in almost all regards More variety with the food when staying longer would have been nice.
- Demia (10/5): Great stay! - We loved this ryokan. The four private onsen outdoors were great and you often find one available, or otherwise you can just wait a little bit. The breakfast was also very good quality. The availability of small snacks and tea/coffee was also appreciated, and the lady in the reception was very nice.

- Daniel (8/5): Great ryokan and onsen - The private mineral baths. Big room with anything you need. Great dinner. Wonderful helpful staff. Breakfast leaves a lot to be desired for a westerner.
- Anouk (9/5): Heerlijke onsen en goed eten! - Grote kamers met eigen badkamer. Erg vriendelijk personeel. Heerlijk eten!

- Sharon (10/5): Best experience we had in Japan. - Best Japanese experience we had.
Excellent location. Traditional ryokan.
Hot tabs breakfast.
Highly recommended! Nothing.
- Benjamin (10/5): -
- Wichar (9/5): Great place close to Kamikochi and the Shinhotaka Ropeway - The staff are warm and attentive, and the place itself is truly wonderful. With no convenience store nearby, dinner outside feels too far, leaving me to walk alone through the quiet night streets.

- Mariana (10/5): Divna lokacija, večera i divan privatni onsen. - Sve
- Pierre (9/5): -
- Nicola (8/5): The Hide beef dinner is a highlight. - The private onsens are lovely. Some better than others so check out all available before you make a choice.
Hotel itself is very dated, as is the communal onsen, but the dining room is more modern and the Hide beef meal was a great experience with friendly service and atmosphere. Bathroom in room is small and very old fashioned.
- Nutchinda (6/5): It's not worth the money. - The hotel is near Shinhotaka Ropeway. It takes only 14 minutes by car. The hotel is run down. There are 4 private onzens but there is no shower before taking into the bath in each rooms. Regarding the food, we inform the hotel in advance that one of our group can't eat beef. We don't have any problem for the dinner, they can provide us with pork. However, they still serve beef for breakfast and say that it is unable to change. We don't understand while they can change for dinner but can't change for breakfast. The price for our stay is quite expensive comparing with the service received.
- Guest (9/5): -
- Julia (8/5): - The welcome we received on arrival was so friendly, the meat we had for dinner was excellent and being able to have a private onsen! The property is quite tucked in to the valley side so you don't get any great views from the onsen or the room we were in. The main part of the hotel where the rooms and onsen are felt a little dated but that was also part of the charm
- Lee (9/5): -
- Michael (10/5): Absolutely fabulous, one of the best stops of our trip so far!! - The dinner and the breakfast that they presented, was above amazing. So good!

- Sarah (10/5): - We had the most excellent stay at Ryokan Gizan! It was our first stay at a Ryokan and it was a good introduction as it is a bigger property. The rooms were simple but very comfortable. There is a good choice of public and private baths and we didn’t have to wait to use any of the facilities. The food was Hida beef that you cooked yourself and was delicious, very special to try local ingredients. The staff were also friendly and welcoming. We would definitely recommend staying here.
- Brian (10/5): Memorable experience that is worth the long journey getting here - All of the staff were amazing and helpful throughout our stay. Staff does their best to help with questions or concerns. Spacious and clean room. The private onsens were splendid especially if you go in for a hot soak at night to stargaze. The food was outstanding for dinner and breakfast. It was fun trying the local cuisine! Only thing that was is getting here. Best to rent a car or find out the bus routes especially on the weekend. Some bus routes are spaced out every 2 hours. Other than that I have nothing negative to say about the Ryokan Gizan itself!
- Simona (7/5): - Atmosfera e onsen all' aperto I servizi della struttura (soprattutto bagni) andrebbero rinnovati perché ormai vecchiotti.
Colazione solo giapponese senza alternative "internazionali".
Lontano per chi vuole visitare Takayama.
- Taiquan (8/5): Great experience - Very authentic Japanese style. Great breakfast with Hida specialties. While clean and well-maintained, some equipment starts to show their age.
- YUKIYA (10/5): -
- Michael (10/5): - Restaurant meals (dinner and breakfast) were amazing!
The hot baths were fantastic, and the fishing in the area was great as well. Overall fantastic experience.
- Akihiro (6/5): -
- Gonikman (10/5): The prefect resort - Don’t let the exterior fool you this place is everything you’d want in a great onsen resort.
The staff are accommodating, kind, and genuinely welcoming. The facilities are top-tier, and the onsen is clean, beautifully maintained, and a truly relaxing experience.
But the real highlight is the food. Dinner and breakfast are absolutely not to be missed under any circumstances 🙂 They elevate the entire stay and make it even more special. Absolutely nothing!
- PEI HWA (10/5): Won't be my last time! - Far exceeded expectations in terms of food and room
Warm and comfortable
Everything was super clean
Lovely touch of free drinks and snacks. Nothing !
- Vidya (10/5): Excellent - Everything from room, onsen, meal, service None
- Pieter Jan (9/5): -
- Liang (10/5): - Outdoor onsen
Dining experience
- Christian (10/5): Dinner and breakfast were absolutely oishi! Private onsen bath was a great experience for the family. The staff were ver - Value for money Nil
- Jinyi (9/5): -
- HUI YUAN (9/5): Super cozy hotel, friendly staffs and nice meal. -
- Jayne Louise (5/5): -
- Tanapat (10/5): So so good than I expect before - Staff, food, environment, atmosphere, take good care of customers Don’t have
- Anthony (8/5): - Extremely nice people
- Shy Huey (8/5): - Free Private onsen and foods . The room is a bit old.
- Eliza (10/5): -
- Danilo Bernini (9/5): -
- Christopher (10/5): Traditional ryokan with great food - Charming traditional ryokan. Well located for exploring the Japan Alps. We wanted a base for a day hike nearby, and this was ideal. Five private onsens, which were lovely. We ate in the restaurant both nights, and the food was fantastic (lots of local beef and other Japanese dishes). Bus stop nearby for exploring the region. I'm not sure how many other restaurants are nearby, so if you're staying for several nights and want to go somewhere different one night, I'm not sure how much choice there would be. But for a short stay, the restaurant in the ryokan was amazing.
- Vidya (10/5): Excellent place - We stayed here for 2 nights. Everything from location in quiet area, the ryokan is not large and not crowded with many guest. We felt very comfortable staying there, The room was quite large and the bed was comfy. The staff at check-in counter were very nice and helpful as well as staff at restaurant. There were 2 best parts of this Ryokan, First the outdoor private onsen (4 of them) was excellent and enjoyable, Second the meal was very delicious and plentiful particular dinner. though it was not cheap but more than worth compared to quality of place and service. Highly recommened. BTW, we left our belonging (suito) and the staff contact us and send the suito to us at our next stay. None
- Vidya (10/5): -
- Hong (6/5): - It is cozy , the staff are friendly. The food preparation were good too. It was nice to enjoy the natural beauty, so it is a little boring. The staff was confused with my payment done in booking.com and ask me to made the payment again, I wasn’t notice about it and end up I paid 2 times for the stay.
- Lemmy (10/5): -
- Chantal Marie (10/5): -
- yinghsiu (10/5): -
- Ethan (10/5): - The onsen was amazing! And they even provided sake in the evening. The food was delicious and the staff was very kind
- Celia María (10/5): -
- Adrien (10/5): -
- Kim (9/5): Beautiful ryokan/onsen stay tucked in the mountains - Ryokan Gizan was a little retreat in the mountains. The public and private onsen baths were fantastic, and we looked forward to them. Breakfast was delicious as well. The rooms had the most comfortable bed, and it was lovely just gazing out the window. Staff, especially Marie, was super helpful in helping us navigate around the area. Town restaurants are not always open when they are meant to be open, and if you do plan to eat around town, bring cash. Other bathers were loud sometimes but not the hotel's fault.
- Nikita (10/5): Excellent and romantic. - Everything was so great! Gorgeous rooms with a view and a private onsen outside. The night under the starry sky was unforgettable. Thank you very much for this lovely experience. The food was delicious too!
- Sara (6/5): - Good outdoor hotsprings Very outdated, old furniture, bathroom smell in the room was not good, bugs in the hotel..
- King Shung (9/5): Relaxing stay - Comfortable Japanese room setting with superb dinner and breakfast! The complimentary sake to enjoy while dipping in the private onsen was a plus! None
- Franziska (9/5): Lovely Ryokan with private onsens & delicious meals - The staff, the facilities (private onsens!!) & the quality of the food was exceptional Slightly far away from the “main attractions” however it is very well connected with the public transport
- So Wai (8/5): -
- Hadar (10/5): Wonderful ryokan - Wonderful ryokan! We had great time there. The private onsens are great, the meals are delicious , first night we had yakiniku with hida beef, 2nd night we had shabu shabu ( i admit some of the side dishes were kind of wierd for non-japanese .. like some egg custatd if i recall.. but still it was great kaiseki meal!)
The calm atmosphere in the little cosy lobby, hanging around with the yokata.. highly recommended Japanese Breakfast ... western guests might not find too much to eat in it
- Phudit (8/5): -
- Dafna (8/5): Ryokan style hotel with private Onsens - Great dinner and breakfast. We went to the restaurant with the Onsen robes.
Free Sake between 19:30 to 21:30 to drink in the onsen.
4 outdoor Private Onsens and 2 internal public onsens. There was no issue getting a private Onsen (reservations were not required).
Room for 5 adults was spacious but a little outdated.
The room had a separate toilet and an external sink.
Tatami was on the thin side, but everyone enjoyed a good night sleep so probably it was OK. External onsen was surrounded by a bamboo fence and covered with a roof so the feeling was not like a real outdoor pool.
Like in other Onsens – no Pajamas was supplied (only an Onsen robe)
There was an issue with the elevator – if you were not fast enough the door closed on you… (there was a note explaining this in the elevator).
I ordered a gluten free meal and verified it a few times prior to our check in via booking messages. When we got to the restaurant it seemed like they were not ready with a gluten free meal and were surprised with our request. After some consultant, they just told us what my son cannot eat (for example the Sobe soup). When I said that this is not what I expected, they gave him some cold dishes (which he did not like). I was under the impression he will get the same meal but without gluten.
