Guest Reviews
- Robert (8/5): - Clean, good food
- Mark (6/5): - Food is fabulous
Bed/mattress could do with replacing
- Cliff (8/5): - Lovely location but the premises now reaching the stage of needing renovation but lovely friendly people
- Pauline (6/5): - This was a convenient location for the C2C. Food was not bad pub food. Accommodation in need of refurbishment which is a shame as the building has great potential. Staff friendly and accommodating.
- Edward (6/5): weekend break - Nice location and room ok but meals not great and bar not great where meals are served.
- Marie (10/5): - Stayed for one night. Room was large, comfortable and very clean. In fitting with the quirky pub, very oldy worldly.
- Paul (10/5): Excellent food and drinks in this rustic old mill. - Made welcome as soon as I arrived and Pauline was an excellent hostess. Anything was no bother and even went out of her way for guests. Food was excellent and I will be back anytime I am in area. Try the Surf and Turf Fajita and the Chicken burger is a must. Rooms tidy and clean.
- Adam (4/5): - It was cold and the mattress had broken springs hanging out the side of the mattress
- Robert (10/5): - Lovely old building with all its characteristics. The staff are so friendly and helpful. The room was very clean and the bed very comfy. stayed for 2 nights and only ate there and the food was outstanding.
- Lynda (10/5): - We really enjoyed our stay. Lovely friendly staff, great food and service. The room was well equipped and comfortable with lots of character.
- Sue (8/5): Nice stay! - A lovely welcome to a lovely, remote Old Mill house..! The place is beautiful but needs a little TLC which works are being carried out now. The room was OK, big enough but a very cold bathroom - no heat in there at all.. The bed was old & creaky but clean & we slept OK. Tea & Coffee in the room. Bar area and breakfast was first class - always served with a smile. Open fire in bar area made it very cosy. We would stay again. Would love to see the place a little busier which I'm sure it will be once all the remedial works are carried out (new roof was going on & general works around the building) Lovely spot with great walks. Thank you!
- Ian (8/5): - Rooms were clean and tidy. We enjoyed a traditional pub meal before attending a local event. The taxi we booked failed to show on time and one of the staff took us, which was great.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Exceptionally Poor Value - The room was tired and in need of some love and attention. On arrival, there was a sheet on the bed to catch debris falling from sizeable gaps in the ceiling whilst the roof was being replaced. Morning time revealed daylight through the gap. Despite the radiator pumping out decent heat when close up, it was ineffective for the room and I spent the night completely freezing and consequently took me some time to dare to get out of the covers in the morning. The bathroom was most uninviting and was even colder than the room - no radiator in here. Should have worn socks to cross the floor. The electric shower made plenty of noise but was also ineffective. The bedroom only had 2x double sockets, three of which were in use by the TV, Freeview box and bedside table lamp (the table almost fell apart when moving). Unplug TV to use kettle. If you have numerous devices to charge then forget it unless you unplug everything else. Lighting was either too bright for relaxing if leaving the main light on, or too dim with the only other light in the room (table lamp). Bed was very wobbly and the metal squeeled with every turn. There was *zero* phone signal via o2 and the wifi in the rooms didn't work, so other than the TV (which mercifully worked fine) there was not much to do. Little soundproofing to the room but it is a pub so accepted this was likely before booking. Offered my feedback after not being asked if everything was okay. Overall, disappointing and one I'll avoid in future.
- Connor (6/5): - The actual place around the hotel was nice
- Robert (10/5): - The staff are really passionate about their work. The breakfast was amazing so was the food on an evening. Perfect if you want to fly fish and stay over.
- Sheila (8/5): - Very quaint and oldie.
- John (6/5): - The bar and outside area was lovely. The room was small and the shower needed a good scrub. Shower sounded like a jet engine and had a very poor water stream. Bits of broken/ removed wall brackets in the en-suite.
Food was good - crockery was chipped.
Would come back for a drink or meal.
- Dulon (10/5): - I dont often leave reviews, although I stay away often, usually at chain hotels. The Team at the Old Mill were great, good check in experience, decent dinner and breakfast. Will be coming back when in the area again.
- paula (8/5): - Comfortable & full of character.
- Phil (6/5): Business Trip - Booked the wrong Old Mill
Rooms are very tired and in need of some tlc
It felt like you were kept apart from the locals as on the night I stayed I was the only one in the dining area, but certainly not the only person eating
It is in a quite area with a stream running across the front so initially looks very nice
it is in need of some updating regards to the rooms, especially for the pricing
- Richard (6/5): - Very nice location, great food
- Adrian (8/5): - Have stopped here before but things don’t seem to be the same
- Verified traveler (6/5): Reasonable - Not the best, but not the worst. Rooms are rather dated and grubby, you expect insects and spiders in this sort of location, but a lot of webs in the room where you have to put your hands to turn appliances on. Food was good but bar is only open if its worthwhile. Towels were very rough, felt like they were line dried in full sun. A great place if you want to eat and sleep early but dont come for the night life. A bit pricey for what it is.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Old stone watermill so quaint but comfortable rooms. Food excellent. Staff friendly and helpful.
Area beautiful.
- Andrew (4/5): - Food was good. The place was suffering from neglect.
- Ann (8/5): - Simply idyllic
- Gary (4/5): Frustrated - We booked in online Fri/Sat and had to make payment of £58. When we arrived at hotel Sunday afternoon there seemed to be a bit of confusion about our booking. Once staff sorted out we were charged £170 for the two nights stay. I questioned them about the £58 I had already paid and I was told that the £58 would be credited back into my account, this has not happened. Room was fine but we had problem with front door and I was locked in the bathroom when the door knob come off in my hand locking me in the bathroom, luckily my wife outside the bathroom to let me out.
Food was good and first morning breakfast was fine. Unfortunately on our last day we went for breakfast and the restaurant area was locked. I tried calling someone but had no answer this was about 07:45am, I found this a bit strange. I checked on the website and it said the hotel was shut Tuesday to Thursday so we left about 08:00 without breakfast to travel back to Essex. I did manage to get hold of some a couple of hours later to be told the restaurant was open and we were too early for breakfast.
I was not happy.
- Malcolm (8/5): - Beautiful setting , relaxing, ideal stay over for discovering the area.
- Sharon (4/5): Tired room, good service and breakfast - We stayed one night, it was a funny mix of a place. The bedding was lovely and clean, bed very comfy. Breakfast was very good.
But the room was very tired, dirty ornaments and decorations, grey towels, broken loo roll holder and towel rail, dangerously sharp cracked tiles in bathroom that moved when you stood on them.Filthy bathmat (see pic) and bedroom rug.I dont like to diss anyones business, but having seen so many good reviews, I feel the other side of the story should be shown as well
- Mark (8/5): - Comfortable cottage room which was well appointed and an excellent breakfast.
- Matthew (10/5): - Beautiful location for a warm cosy traditional stay :) lovely staff.
- Adrian (8/5): - Very friendly and excellent food
- Karl (10/5): Great rustic pub and accommodation - Great place to stay if you are looking for a quiet English country pub in a small hamlet near Comsett.
- Pauline (10/5): Coast to Coast stop off - Lovely setting and lovely staff. The food was very good and Pauline, the owner was very friendly and helpful - as were all of the staff. Quirky touches throughout, including our bedroom.
- Alan (10/5): A firm favorite - Love this hotel, really hidden away but clearly a favorite with locals for food and drink. Excellent country style rooms with good bathroom. Fantastic home cooked breakfast.
- Hilary (8/5): - Stayed at the old mill for 2 night as attending a wedding in the area.
Accommodation was lovely, rooms kept in the style off he old mill. Only things missing in the room was a full length mirror and the light was poor.
The proprietor was helpful and accommodating.
- Robert (10/5): - We received a warm welcome when arriving, staff were very accommodating and helpful.
Would recommend and will be staying again when the chance occurs
- ALEXANDER (8/5): - Lovely meal. Also enjoyed watching a moorhen and chicks on the stream.
- David (6/5): - Well unfortunately a party was been held and got a bit out of hand police where called when arrived back to hotel a man was being held on to our car by security , but we where given a complementary drink for so shocked
- David (10/5): - Lovely quaint old mill, comfortable rooms
Good bar and really good food
Friendly place to relax
I was working nearby so made the perfect
Place to stay.
- Martin (8/5): - An enjoyable stay in an historic building with a lovely setting. There were some idiosyncrasies but they were more than offset by the welcome and attention of our host. We would stay there again
Martin
- Celia (10/5): - Excellent food & service. Characterful bar and restaurant area. Helpful staff. Delightful setting.
- Richard (10/5): Another great stay in Knitsley - Yet another great stay at Knitsley Mill. Lovely old country inn with good comfy beds and attentive service.
- JULIE (10/5): Peaceful beautiful setting. - The lady in charge was very helpful and the room was comfortable. The breakfast you ordered the night before and said what time you would like it for. It was plated up and ready for you to start straight away. Replenished the tea and coffee at the table and also in the room. Any problems were dealt with once they had been made aware. All the old equipment around the restaurant and pub area was lovely to see making it very quaint.
- Tim (10/5): One night stay - Lovely B&B with plenty of character. Food and service was good. Bathroom was starting to look like it needed a little makeover but was perfectly okay. Good value.
- Neil (10/5): - Really nice place, friendly staff and good food.
- Meryl (10/5): Fab breakfast at The Old Mill. - This was a very late booking but Pauline and the team prepared the room with very short notice.
Pauline also cooked us a delicious breakfast.
We will definitely come back when visiting family in the area again.
- Michael (10/5): Perfect - Lovely hotel and amazingly friendly staff. Loved the room, very olde worlde. Clean and welcoming, 100% recommend.
- Louise (2/5): - The bathroom was dirty with mouldy grout, a cracked window, cracks in a lot of appliances, an unclean toilet and cobwebs throughout.I love spiders but I didn’t expect to see so many in a ‘freshly cleaned’ bathroom. The room itself was a mismatch of furniture, not shabby chic but just odd pieces. I was given a ground floor room with a window that opened fully with no safety catches and a second internal door which couldn’t be secured and opened from the outside! All furniture was in poor repair with cracks, splinters and botched repairs. I ended up sleeping in my own sleeping bag. There was a constant loud dripping noise all night, esp loud beside the bed. It came from outside the room. At morning I went to return the key asap. Yes breakfast was included but if the cleanliness of the dining room was on a par with that of the room it wasn’t worth the risk. I did mention to the manageress the loud drip but was told that maybe I was a light sleeper and there was nothing they could do about it. I’m not a light sleeper. I have photos of everything mentioned. If I’d checked in with more time I would have brought up these issues there and then. Reception was closed when I returned and if there was an out of hours number I missed it. Not at all worth the money charged. Never again.
- Karen (10/5): Great time again - We have stoped at knitsley mill a few times staff friendly and helpful
Breakfast great
Lovely pub and great restaurant
Great entertainment this time with live band
Would recommend old mill knitsley
- Andrea (8/5): - Accessible to cycling and walking trails with beautiful views. Not too keen on bathroom conditions.
- Kenneth (8/5): - Nice quiet overnight stay good food
- ian (8/5): Beamish break - Lovely setting after a long day. Excellent food and service.
- rebecca (10/5): - We had the most wonderful stay. Loved the decor and staff were absolutely amazing. Definitely a must stay if you are in the area
- Verified traveler (10/5): Family weekend away - Lovely pub and hotel. Room was basif with rustic cottage feel. Had an ajoining door behine wardrobe with room next door and we could hear every word of our neighbours it was a bit strange felt like we were sharing our room. Pub food and service was fantasic
- Simon (10/5): - Very impressed with service and ideal food and great location for our stay
- Jennifer (10/5): Nice country inn - Nice 'olde worlde' country inn in beautiful countryside. Friendly staff. Good food.
- Hilary (8/5): Two nights stay - Our room was small but had everything we needed Tap was dripping toilet seat loose in bathroom Plenty of hot water and towels Staff we attentive to our requirements and an overall pleasant experience
- shanna (6/5): Not made for larger groups staying - Found it to be a little yo small area for a larger get together. Was asked to oder your evening meal and breakfast as we got there not done that before might have changed our minds as to what we wanted. Had to get up extra early to let them know we changed our mind about breakfast. Mobile phone no signal at all. Food was not anything special not tasty really. Accommodation was lovely and comfortable and the bar area lovely.
- Phil (10/5): Lovely country retreat - This is a beautiful place and i would love to see it in the summer with my grandkids big roaring fire in the pub fantastic old worldly feeling and the owner and her staff are great and go the extra mile for your comfort. Will be back without a doubt
- John (10/5): - Exactly wot I expected comfortable great service good breakfast can’t fault it
- Denis (10/5): - Easy access and good parking. Staff very helpfull.
- Paul (10/5): Excellent short stay - Great stay for wedding at local venue. Very pleasant pub and accommodation and enjoyable nightcap and breakfast. Incredibly accommodating service
- David (10/5): Great friendly place - The owner and staff were very friendly, attentive and accommodating. The food was excellent in both quality and quantity and good value. All cooked freshly to order.
The rooms were of a decent size and full of character and generally well kept. The bar was well stocked with great choice, particularly lagers.
My only criticisms were noise from other rooms. Although I understand that it is an old building, if the upstairs rooms were to have a good quality underlay and carpets this might baffle much of the noise from foot movements. The shower could do with modernising and there was thick dust under the bed and wardrobe.
All in all we really enjoyed the stay and hope to return again in the future.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Lovely stay, bike storage and help with sourcing dinner as they didn’t serve food on a Sunday night.
- Janet (8/5): - Lovely country pub in a beautiful location. Obviously recovering from lockdown so less busy than anticipated. Good food offer, great staff. Rooms a little dated but in keeping with the age of the building. A great place for a weekend break.
- William (6/5): - Food was not great.
- Foroozan (8/5): Stayed one night in this pleasant area - The manageress was extremely helpful and professional. She tried her best to provide a good service.
The room could be better, for example, bathroom facility need attention and modernisation.
A charging facility for electric cars can be helpful, considering the location of the property.
- Paula (10/5): - Beautiful location
- s (10/5): A real treat - This is a really special place. The building is full of character and history, and the location is lovely. We had an evening meal and breakfast and it was all delicious and homemade. The whole stay was wonderful.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Would recommend - Lovely setting, friendly staff, quaint old room
- Robert (10/5): - Fantastic stay
- Vic (8/5): - Loved the olde world charm. Owner and staff gave excellent service. Food in restaurant was very very good had some friends with us and they were very impressed by surroundings and food. Would stay again
- Ian (10/5): Great pub and bnb - Stayed here whilst cycling C2C. Great place
- Karen (10/5): Lovely place to stay - Lovely place to stay in a quiet area of Consett. Roof lovely and spacious, pub and restaurant really good, nice home cooked food and friendly staff.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - The setting of the property next to a Mill stream was delightful but the room we stayed in was tired and cold. However there are some great walking tracks on disused railway lines nearby.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - This is a nice characterful place to stay with a lot of original features.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Excellent service from lovely staff, Food was very nice. Room spot less
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Bedrooms are quaint but nice. Good food available. Very enjoyable stay
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Very unusual collection of olde worlde furnishibgs
- Christine (10/5): Country stay - Quaint old rooms comfortable bed, perhaps bedside light would be useful as rooms very dark at night. Very friendly staff and food delicious. Good quality breakfast. Only stayed one night but would recommend to my friends.
- Peter (6/5): - Good friendly service
