Guest Reviews
- AliS303 (10/5): Beautiful space! - The hotel is located in the Medina. There are eateries nearby. The hotel itself is very charming. The rooms are clean and the staff are extremely friendly. One inconvenient aspect of the hotel is that you can't open the front door yourself. So, every time you go in or out, you have rely on someone to open the door for you to the hotel itself.
- 665ottov (6/5): Ok at best and outdated reviews - far better alternative nearby - Ok at best. No longer deserves all the accolades it's gotten. We booked through hotels.com - and they will not allow any review because we gave only 3 stars. So beware - you may only see the great written reviews.
A bit rundown. Not as charming as you'd expect. Breakfast can be skipped. But most disappointing was the unenthusiastic staff. Most nice enough but no efforts to be helpful. And one very poor experience of rude receptionist after the hotel had quoted us one airport transfer price but then outright demanded twice the price on arrival, very argumentative.
Lastly, for the same price we found another place (unfortunately fully booked) on the edge of the Medina that looked outstanding (an old palais) with unbelievably kind staff
- 600martim (10/5): Unforgettable! - What an extraordinary place. Perfect location on the edge of the Medina. Beautifully restored, peaceful, comfortable...words cannot do it justice. I stayed 10 days in October 2025 and did not want to leave. The experience is as far as possible from what you'd find in a cookie-cutter big corporate hotel, People who look for things to complain about might find one or two quirks, for example my bathroom shower was a bit tight, and since it is a very old building, none of the architectural lines are straight...and this is what I love about it! The antique tiles, the curated museum quality artworks and collectibles, the special juices in the morning, the smiles of every staff person, the sense of history and community...lovely! It's perfect for people who love slow travel, to drink in a place, to experience a journey rather than a simple vacation. I loved the nooks and crannies to hang out and read or listen to the call to prayer. My room was a haven, spacious and comfortable with a sitting area, a study area and a raised bed in a glamorous nook. Thank you, Dali, Rim and all the staff!
- Kaveh (8/5): - C breakfast could be more intresting considering other Dars I stayed in this trip. Very basic breakfast
- Selma (8/5): - Très bonne maison d’hôtes le personnel est très gentils et accueillant
- Luis Sebastián (8/5): - Nice place, good location, excelent breakfast. Staff is helpfull and kind
- Irati (10/5): Excelente estancia - El hotel muy bien situado con el personal muy amable. Recomendable si vas a Túnez
- TANYA (10/5): - This property has a very accommodating host and it is exceptionally clean. Everyone working here is extremely helpful and kind. Dar Ben Gacem is beautiful, with rooftop views and amazing tile and architecture throughout. There are many areas to relax and enjoy the ambience. The breakfast has delicious food and an outstanding chef. If you need anything, they are always there to help. Another way they accommodate guest is by speaking English, Arabic and French.
I highly recommend this establishment, we will most definitely return.
- Luis Sebastián (10/5): - Excelentes instalaciones, locación, servicio y desayuno. Una gran opción en Túnez, muy bello y recomendable
- Margaret (10/5): Lovely place and fantastic staff. - This is a lovely and quiet place to stay that is close to the heart of the medina. There are taxis that are easy to catch nearby as well. It was hard for taxis to know where to go. I wound up giving the driver my phone with Google map directions to follow. That worked well.
- Custodio (8/5): Beautiful old hotel inside the medina - The quietness of the hotel. Nice decoration. Small details: no glasses in the toilet, no basket for personal litter inside the room ... Not enough toilet paper...
- Roberto (9/5): Superb -
- Guy (9/5): Superb -
- John (10/5): Exceptional -
- Christine (10/5): Full of character and charm - With its rich tapestry of art and antiquities, the place feels like a living museum itself, full of character and charm. It’s the perfect home base for adventure, and I can’t imagine a more fitting spot to soak in the spirit of Tunis.
- Marc (9/5): Very cute little hotel in the heart of the Tunis medina! - -The people who work there are super nice. Special shout out to Dali who is a just great person. He told us some history of the place while we stayed there, and made sure we were having a great time. Which we did!
-All of the hotel from the roof to the rooms to the courtyard is filled with cool details (like pottery, plants, etc.) Very pretty.
-Breakfast was good - lots of choices to pick from (or have it all ;). The omlet was especially delicious!
One day we sat with other folks at a big table in the courtyard at breakfast and it was fun doing family style meeting new people.
-The hotel is right near like a small turnaround area with extra room which is great for taxis and cars, and fun to see people who live in the community conversing in the spot. -There were no safes in the rooms, but other than that it was a perfect stay!
- Haider (8/5): Very good -
- D (4/5): - Property was well maintained and in a good part of the old Madina. The room faces a courtyard and is extremely noisy. We were kept up past midnight due to other guests laughing and talking loudly. The bed is in a nook, surrounded on 3 sides by walls, so one person had to crawl over the other to get out. There were no blankets on the bed so we froze. We had to wear our full clothes and sweaters in bed but barely slept all night. What hotel welcomes their guests with nothing but sheets on their beds? It was a real shame, because otherwise it was neat renovated historical residence.
- Nicole (10/5): I would definately stay there again - beautiful right in the medina with all the shops and Cafes! - Amazing architecture and interior
- very artistic! Very clean! By accident we got at evening to the wrong room and were able to open that door with our key ?!?
- Peter (9/5): Neat place for an authentic stay - This place is in the Medina, in a really good part of the Medina. The spaces are great, with access to a lot of common areas, including a roof top patio. Staff are welcoming and helpful. It was a bit of a challenge to get around, but work with the staff when arriving and they will arrange taxis to the airport for you.
- Bas (7/5): Perfect for short stays - The breakfast, location, staff and the hospitality where amazing. The beds are terrible to our taste (really hard), and very un even Nothing else
- Athina (10/5): Beautiful Dar!! - In the most beautiful road in medina of Tunis!!
Perfect traditional dar with beautiful decoration!very clean and breakfast is fantastic!!Staff very polite!!
- Diane (9/5): Highly recommend this Dar, and would stay again next visit - Loved the location, very central for touring about, wonderful and friendly staff, delicious breakfasts
- Devyani (8/5): Very good -
- Lumin (9/5): Good location good value! - Good location, very friendly staff. We had pleasant time . Highly recommended!
- Linda (8/5): Charming! - We had a very nice reception from very kind staff. I booked a junior suite w/ balcony which was up one flight of narrow high stairs, then four more steps into room. The guest house and room were beautifully and authentically decorated. Charming! Make sure you follow the narrow stairs in the courtyard up two flights of stairs to the beautiful rooftop deck with several areas to sit and relax.
I liked the linens, firm mattress, mini fridge, good water pressure, hot water, shuttered windows to courtyard, gorgeous chandelier, lighting, available outlets, heat and AC.
Allow enough time for breakfast which is very good but can take quite long to get through. The first morning we received fresh strawberry juice, fruit bowl, cake, chocolate croissant, sesame something, and local bread with butter, jam and halva. And a pot of coffee with hot milk. The second morning we received fresh squeezed orange juice, fruit bowl, cake, chocolate croissant, baguette and poached egg in spicy tomato sauce. We ordered a Bolt ride at the airport to the guesthouse address but the driver ditched us close to the medina at dusk saying it was 'that way on foot only'. We couldn't find the property on our own and had to ask some police men for assistance. Make sure you have a good ride who understands were the drop off point for this guesthouse actually is!
There was a narrow desk in the room but no desk chair. For the money should provide at least two drinking glasses, and a kettle and two mugs would have been welcome. There was only a hand-held shower head within a very high walled bathtub.
The indoor breakfast room was very small and the table set for six was very cramped. Even with the chilly January mornings I would have preferred to eat in the courtyard.
- Jan (8/5): Very good -
- Cedric (10/5): Exceptional -
- Elena (9/5): Superb - The hospitality and the kindness of the staff was superb, and the breakfast was amazing, including fresh fruit and something different prepared on the spot every day, truly exceptional staff. They were ready to advice us places to visit and restaurants, to book us taxis and additional services. Moreover the structure is beautiful, comprehending a beautiful courtyard and rooftop terrace, many leisure spaces and sofas. The only thing that could be better are the power outlets, far from the bed, and the lights over the bed, that remain a little bright even when turned off. The room I booked was different than the one I actually got but they were the same price and dimensions more or less.
- Michael (7/5): Good -
- Hyunja (9/5): Attentif and caring - Charming boutique hotel with seven rooms in a traditional Medina house transformed into a hotel.
I enjoyed having a breakfast in the courtyard especially during Ramadan period.
- Mark (10/5): Exceptional - Location and right in the Medina WiFi did not work.
- Sarah (10/5): Exceptional -
- Leah (8/5): Very good -
- Michel (10/5): Great hotel for Tunis Medina - Everything is perfect
Great Hotel
excellent staff
- James (10/5): Too short of a stay (2 days) - Will come back! Excellent and attentive staff. Great breakfasts. Very authentic feel with a beautiful courtyard and lounge areas. One regret- I wish I had upgraded to the larger suites, they are spacious and beautifully decorated. Location is excellent in the Medina.
- Ashley (10/5): Stunning, charming, and exceptional hospitality - I loved everything. In fact, I extended my stay because it was so lovely. The property itself is gorgeous and super well-located, but the privilege was really in the warmest, kindest staff who did everything to make me feel at home. As a solo woman traveler who didn't speak Arabic or French, this made all the difference. This may be the nicest guest house I've ever stayed in. Highest recommendation.
- Ronald (10/5): Exceptional - Quiet, beautiful architecture, lovely rooftop, kind staff, nice breakfast. Feels like staying in a palace
- Matthew (10/5): Exceptional - Dar Ben Gacem is such a unique hotel from which to explore Tunis. It's about a 10-15 minute walk to the souks within the old medina walls, and about the same time to get outside the walls. You get transported back centuries being in the old neighborhood and house (updated for modern needs of course). The daily breakfast is a special treat, with local seasonal fruits and whatever main egg dish the staff wants to make that day (shakshuka, omelet, etc).
- Pedram (10/5): Exceptional -
- Nigel (9/5): Superb -
- Claudia (10/5): - Lovely people and comfortable room.
- Marcella (10/5): Great place! I would love to return if I happen to visit Tunis again. Highly recommended! - The place was wonderful and perfectly located. The staff were very kind and always available.
- Giacomelli (9/5): Superb - Amazing hotel in a convenient position. Staff very helpful. All was ok
- Stpear (10/5): Stay in a Piece of Tunisian History - This Dar is tucked away on the edge of the Medina. Much car has been taken to curate the rooms with Tunisian antiques, stunning tile work and comfortable spaces to rest. There is a beautiful room top deck. Great food is steps away.
The staff was accommodating & friendly. They arranged a cab for us at 3am to the airport. (50tdn)
You can drive near-ish it; getting out of the Medina by car is an experience.
- Pedram (10/5): Exceptional -
- Hoon (8/5): Great value for money, terrible wifi - Beautiful building and unique rooms, amazing location just outside of the souk (you can get a car to it, but it's close enough to all the shops and restaurants!).
Everyone working again Dar Ben Gacem was really nice and helpful - arranging us lifts to Hammamet on very short notice! So friendly with our young daughter.
Great breakfast - similar but perfectly varied everyday - fresh fruit, fresh juice, eggs/cheese/meat, breads, delicious spreads. Really great and felt very local.
Super cute cat that occasionally wandered in - all part of the Tunisian charm!
For the price, Dar Ben Gacem was really ideal. The WiFi was truly awful - appreciate some people might like the excuse to switch off - but we found it difficult to find the information we needed for our stay in Tunisia. I'm not entirely sure we agree it's just the thick walls, as one of the employees lent us his WiFi box and it worked absolutely fine, so I'm not sure what the issue is.
Would have loved another pillow/bigger towels. We had a bit of confusion arriving as there was no where for our daughter to sleep - all dealt with quickly but we didn't get an extra towel or duvet for her. Not a problem, just a bit of a faff to have to keep asking for extra bits.
I think there is quite a variety in "suite" sizes - ours was probably on the smaller side, or maybe just one larger room rather than smaller rooms that would have been better for our family. The Booking.com pictures aren't entirely clear as to which room you will get - might be worth checking the actual website.
- Vasileios (8/5): Very good -
- Isabel (9/5): This is my favourite place to stay in Tunis - I felt like a privileged guest staying in someone's palatial home. This is a beautiful and lovingly restored house. My bed was comfy with super soft sheets and breakfast was served in the atmospheric courtyard.
- Oscar (10/5): - Little gem, nestled in the heart of the Medina. Extremely cozy and hosted by people full of warmth and charm.
- Roger (9/5): A STAY with a LOT OF CHARM and CHARACTER. - Staff was wonderful especially Dali and Rheem, who made us varied, delicious breakfasts and even came in early one day too make us breakfast before an early tour...I mean, who does that anymore?
I gave a 9 rating for the facility cause it's ancient, so it's not going to be perfect. But it's super clean and comfortable. And the rooms are traditionally and beautifully decorated and the rooftop terrace is gorgeous. Nice being in the medina. It's difficult to find good food for dinner cause the medina closes early. The Ben Gacem part of the medina is good at night, but other parts get a little creepy. Tunis, in general, has few good dinner options so it's not just a medina problem.
- Minhvu (9/5): Superb -
- Al (9/5): Terrific value for money. - All very good
- Evelyne (9/5): Superb -
- Jennifer (10/5): Extremely helpful Staff and beautiful rooms - There are many things to like about this Riad. First and foremost was the excellent staff. They arranged a pick up and drop off at the airport 50 dinar each way. One of the downsides to Tunis is the dishonest taxi drivers. This was an excellent price and such a relief to see our driver waiting with my name when we arrived.
The rooms are exquisitely decorated and very comfortable. The only real criticism we had was the shower head which was hand held - in summer this wouldn’t be such a problem but in winter it was difficult to lather yourself and stay warm.
Breakfast was very good and the bed comfortable. There was also a small fridge.
The Riad is located near the edge of the Medina and there are lots of shops as well as the souks. There are two very upmarket restaurants close by but you have to walk further to find cheaper local places to eat.
Especially pleasing was the hotel organising a driver to take us to El Jem which is two hours south of Tunis.
- Borzooyeh (7/5): Worth an experience - Staff were friendly, just like almost all Tunisians.
Liked the Atmosphere.
Breakfast was good. Wifi was not working at first. After an hour, it could only work at specific locations in the room.
- Mohammed (10/5): Thanks to all employees who worked hard to make this hotel a success - Wonderful people and excellent service Nothing i
- Mark (9/5): A delightful surprise - Staff were very helpful. Breakfast, although limited was still very good
- Aleksej (9/5): Charming stay at the old town - Perfect location at a very competitive price (by far some of the best value for money for the travelers). The room and the hotel were quite special (historical, but perhaps no luxurious), very friendly staff - and a very nice breakfast (photo included although it is only a part of breakfast, which was quite full). The place looks a little worn down but still charming
- William (9/5): Superb -
- Gail T (10/5): - The hotel was very unique, the staff was very accommodating and it was in the Medina where there is lots of shopping. I would highly recommend this hotel. the hotel has a limited amount of rooms. there is no elevator but the staff delivers your luggage to your room. there is a lovely view of the city on the rooftop.
- Sara (10/5): Incredible stay at an amazing hotel! - It was a beautiful place with traditional decorations! The people and the stagaire girls were amazing, always ready to help and accommodate you! The included breakfast was delicious every day and the lady making it was super sweet! Overall super clean and lovely hotel with great location in the Medina! I would definitely come back! Nothing, maybe just the WiFi is not super great in all parts but it was fine!
- Kate (10/5): - Perfect place to stay on the edge of the Medina. Beautiful building with a lovely courtyard to enjoy breakfast. Friendly and helpful staff. Cafes and restaurants a few meters away in the Medina. Safe for solo female traveler. Highly recommend.
- Helena (10/5): Excellent stay in the heart of Tunis - Everything was excellent! Well located, friendly staff, comfortable rooms and beautiful traditional details. Totally recommended!
- Tanguay (10/5): Very nice - Nice
- Mislav (10/5): Outstanding stay in Tunis :) - • The staff are absolutely amazing, such welcoming and helpful people (Sana, thank you for allowing us late check-in at 5am)
• Location is brilliant for exploring both Medina and New Tunis
• Only 15/20 mins away from the airport by taxi
• Very clean and spacious room with everything you need (hairdryer, fridge, etc…)
• Lots of cafes/restaurants nearby Honestly, there isn’t anything major but here are two small comments:
• Maybe offer a bit more salty food for breakfast (as it is quite sweet focused)
• Have a few more hangers in the closet
- Kate (9/5): Deserves its reputation as a refined, comfortable excellent value stay in the Tunis medina - This Dar has a well-deserved reputation for its exceptional ambience and service. Located in the medina, close to the souks, the building is old and impressive, restored in beautifully styled decor and artefacts. There are lots of places to sit and relax, including a rooftop terrace. Breakfast and dinner are served in the central atrium, and the catering is excellent. Equally excellent staff supported our stay, willing to chat and assist with travel tips and advice on where to eat. Close to museums and hammams, you can venture out of the bounds of the tourist-focused medina and explore more widely around surrounds of central Tunis. Get the Bolt app for a better local taxi service.
- Mais (9/5): Superb -
- Fabio (10/5): Exceptional - Unique Place in the vivid Medina of Tunis Be aware that there are noises during the night
- Paraskevi (10/5): Exceptional -
- Paraskevi (10/5): Exceptional -
- Maricela (9/5): Superb - Location, good breakfast, very friendly staff, beautiful room (I felt so was in a Palace). I’d go back to this hotel for sure if in Tunez a second time!
- Panayota (10/5): A very beautiful and authentic place to stay in the Medina of Tunes. - We loved our stay at Ben Gacem. Located in Medina but in a quite part near many nice cafes and restaurants. After crossing the door of the Dar we entered a traditional, nice decorated yard and felt very welcomed. Our room was so beautiful, like a small palace: amazing ceiling and wall decoration, beautiful carpets. We enjoyed the view of the roof top and we had the best breakfast! we will definitely come back! Nothing to notice
- Dotte (10/5): Time stopping - Located in Medina in a quiet street, very calm at night. Feels like you’re at home. The rooftop is super cosy with a great view on the medina.
- khlood (4/5): - The property is under renovation,Room was not ready
No warm Water, the fridge not working and mouldy.
No cups ,no complementary tea or coffee, no boiler.
The second day no hand Soap.
For sure does not worth the Money
- Stephanie (10/5): Exceptional - Super charming. Fantastic breakfast. Delightful staff.
- Matthew (10/5): Exceptional -
- Bianca (9/5): Wonderful traditional stay, feeling like royalty travelling back in time - Attentive, friendly, helpful staff
Wonderful traditional building and decor
Beautiful rooftop terrace and inner courtyard
Incredibly beautiful room
Very convenient, central location
Quiet, comfortable, great value for money Minimal breakfast with few healthy options
Some facilities not working very well: hairdryer overheating quick, low pressure shower, fridge broken then fixed.
- Yasmeen (10/5): Loved it! Would stay again. - The location was great, easy to get to the mosque and souks on foot. It was also easy enough to order taxis (Bolt) for further spots.
The breakfast was wonderful. The staff were very friendly and very helpful. As there is no elevator, for those with reduced mobility, requesting a floor on the ground floor would be better.
- RafVibr (2/5): Very unfortunate experience! - In April I was in this hotel with a friend, whose name is Chiara.
This latter paid, by a mistake of the staff, the due amount twice.
Since April Chiara has send unsuccessfully several emails and messages; she has also contaqcted them by phone, receving from the staff a promise of taking care of the case.
It was agreed that the amount would be transferred to my friend's bank account in Italy.
Unfortunatelly, this has never happended and the hotel staff every time has found many silly excuses.
They even requested, surprisingly, a letter from my friend's bank a statement of acceptance of this amount. Chiara sent them a letter of the Italian bank confirming tha the account is genuine and tha twas more than enough.
Probably they hope that mwe will give up and they can keep Chiara's money!
As everybody can understand, this is truly a dishonest and unacceptable behaviour; just for few hundreds euro we now have to involve a lawyer in order to get the money back!
We want everybody to know this story and avoid booking this hotel for their stay in Tunis.
- Paul (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jose (10/5): Exceptional - Decorated with exceptional taste.
The breakfast was delicious!
- Alessandro (8/5): Happy with the choice, fair price and nothing to complain - Traditional, we’ll preserved, kind staff. Good and abundant breakfast.. recommended!
- Simona (8/5): Beautiful and convenient hotel in Medina. - Beautiful, clean and convenient hotel.
Very helpful and kind staff. Breakfast was truly yummy and varied. Bed pillows were a bit too high and there weren’t replacements, even if requested at the reception.
- Tina (10/5): Fantastic - Beautiful authentic building with lovely helpful staff and a delicious breakfast. Our room was lovely on both occasions (we stayed twice and both rooms were the best we had during our whole stay in Tunisia). It was very near to the main areas to visit - mosques and the souks. There was nothing not to like
- Alessio (9/5): Very nice dar in a great location of the medina -
- Alessio (9/5): very nice dar in a great location of the medina -
- Pedro (10/5): Exceptional - Amazing place. Near to the market .
- sjw5534 (10/5): An absolute gem! - This traditional "dar" - with a handful of guest rooms surrounding a central courtyard - was just a fabulous place to stay. First off, its design is super charming -- the rooms have mosaics, intricate plaster design, local art, hookahs, and more. And possibly the highest ceilings of any place we've every stayed! Next, the staff is hospitable and helpful, and the daily breakfast is too generous (but a welcome treat). Third, its location is perfect, in the heart of Tunis and easy walking distance to the souks, central downtown, and local restaurants/cafes. My wife and I would easily recommend this to anyone visiting Tunis!
- Vasco (10/5): Exceptional -
- Alice (10/5): Traditional with a homely feeling Dar, in the heart of the medina - Superb guest house (boutique-like accommodation) with a traditional and unique design of the rooms and the common areas, including the terrace; great location; rich breakfast (no other restaurant services provided); staff very welcoming and ready to assist - special thanks to Wassim who helped me purchase the missing piece of the camera. Internet connection not great but manageable, the internal courtyard has great potential...
I cannot remember any downside, which is a + to the guest house.
- Paola (6/5): - The room was dirty. Bathroom smelled. Decor was great, however I would prefer a cleaner room and less decor. The staff was OK, Rim, the cleaning lady and cook was AMAZING!!! Only reason I enjoyed my stay there. She is so hospitable, kind and sweet. And her coffee is the BEST!!! The internet was horrible!!! I even complained to the front desk personnel, nothing was done. Sooo slow could not even connect at times. I loved the area, the Old Medina is Great, walkable and close to restaurants and cafes. Tunisians are humble and loving people.
- Carlos (10/5): Exceptional -
- Nara (7/5): Dar with a good local feel and history - Traditional Dar with lots of nice local, sophisticated decorations. Windows in the room were small and I felt a bit confined
- Melisa (10/5): Enriching and beautiful stay - Dar Ben Gacem was an incredibly lovely stay and a highlight of my trip in Tunis. It’s so beautifully decorated and curated, being there feels like visiting a landmark. I just wanted to spend more time there to soak it all in!
The room was comfortable and spacious, and breakfast each morning was a delightful treat. Service was impeccable, everyone was incredibly kind and we had some insightful chats. I can’t wait to visit again!
- Laïla (8/5): Very good - Beautiful spaces and bedrooms, nice terrace, very quiet location, clean, kind staff.
- Tom (10/5): The style and facilities were beautiful, historic and unique. Staff friendly and helpful. - The style and facilities were beautiful, historic and unique. Breakfast was fabulous. Staff friendly and helpful. Nothing
- Joao (10/5): Really good stay - Really nice arab house, comfortable bed and friendly staff. Location is good, but sometimes the taxis or Bolts won't drop you exactly where the hotel is because in the medina the streets are so narrow the, if there is some sort of construction work, the car won't be able to get through.
They also could have a proper shower in the bathroom, not just a bathtub.
- Karen (10/5): Highly recommended - Absolutely delicious breakfast with wonderfully friendly service.
- Nika (9/5): Superb - The place is extremely beautiful. The room was amazing and outside was a beautiful courtyard where we had breakfast. The breakfast itself was very good and we got a lot of food. The room was quite big and the bed was comfy. The hotel is located in the centre so it was in a very good location to explore the city. The Wi-Fi in the room was quite weak. The bathroom would benefit from a couple of small repairs.
