Guest Reviews
- glen (10/5): - Wonderful everything was great
- Colin (4/5): - Stayed here for 3 nights while our daughter was competing at David Broome Equestrian Centre. Overpriced for very basic accommodation. There was no room service at all during our stay which I find unacceptable when paying £100 per night. Food was standard pub food
- Raymond (10/5): A long weekend away - We stayed in a double room with en-suite breakfast was offered but refused as we had busy days
We returned to the hotel and had an evening meal they catered for our dietary restrictions
The food went down well with a pint of beer
The bed was comfortable and there was a micro fridge in the room
- Darren (10/5): 5* Stay - highly recommended!!! - We stayed one night for a local concert at Caldicot Castle.
The owner/landlord is so friendly and welcoming (and the staff).
Great food at lunch - The steak and ale pie is excellent, as are the home cooked chips from locally sourced produce.
Lovely quiet, comfortable and clean room with mini fridge, kettle and coffee/tea available. Great breakfast.
Overall a really pleasant stay - Excellent.
- Sean (10/5): - The staff make this property all it is. This a small space, althought the restaurant compared to the 2 bar areas is surprisingly large and air conditioned which made all the difference on the heat-wave day that we visited.
- Michael (8/5): - Very convenient stop off on our way to South west Wales
- Todd (10/5): - This was simply a great Hotel/Inn to stay at. Staff were super friendly and nice, beds comfy, breakfast delicious and if you're a history nerd, it's right next to the Roman walls.
Would absolutely come here again.
- GARETH (10/5): - The hospitality
- Mike (10/5): - Ample parking, 2 bars , breakfast room & an extra dining/private hire room. Very clear twin room with on-suite, TV & drink making facilities. Comfy beds & a fairly decent view out of the window..
- David (10/5): - Lovely old Roman village to explore all around this excellent friendly pub
- GARETH (10/5): - Such a friendly welcome which was there for the whole stay.
- Amanda (8/5): - Lovely peaceful stay for my parents diamond anniversary.
- Kevin (10/5): Friendly with a great atmosphere - We had a lovely stay here. Very friendly staff who were welcoming and attentive
The food was of a good standard and the breakfast was excellent.
- Michele (8/5): - Nice friendly pub. Room was basic but clean with a kettle and plenty of tea and coffee. Breakfast was a bit disorganised as there was no menu as such and it was difficult to find out what was available. Good if you like a full English breakfast but otherwise poor.
- Raymond (8/5): Basic! - Don’t believe it’s worth £100 night?! Very basic; breakfast wasn’t bad though!
- Graham (10/5): Well worth a look. - Very clean and nice decor. Good value for money.
- Cory (10/5): - The property and Caerwent were lovely. The staff was sweet and easy to talk with! Breakfast was excellent. Loved it here and it is close to many interesting sights!
- Alan (10/5): - An absolutely lovely place.
Wonderful, welcome from the friendly staff.
Made to feel like one of the locals.
Extremely clean, comfortable room, with all the facilities you need.
Lovely, well cooked breakfast.
I would certainly return, and recommend.
- Ken (10/5): - Lovely staff
- Sharron (8/5): - Friendly staff. Nice quite location. Nice room with very comfy bed. Well filled tea and coffee tray with good selection. Very nice full english breakfast. Served hot!
- Linda (2/5): - Has to drive hours to get here early before our evening out as they won’t allow check in after 10 as no one at the pub so we didn’t feel comfortable with staying on a premises with no one there in case of emergency 2 women alone in strange area wasn’t what I expected
Wooden stairs that I can’t do with my disability wasn’t mentioned on booking
Room was very tired and dated beds old towels prices were awful hard and ancient
Window open onto huge smelly kitchen extractor fan squeaking away
I could not sleep with that next to the window
We took one look and left in10 minutes we didn’t even stay the night
So a total waste of 100 what a rip off
- Lester (10/5): I would stay here again - I had a very pleasant day and would stay here again just a quick note there is no food served on a Monday evening but there’s plenty of places to eat and you can order in a Takeaway Breakfast is enormous. You might need to lie down afterwards.
- Mark (10/5): - Just a nice place simples
- Hilary (10/5): - Lovely food choice everything we needed in the room friendly welcoming staff
- PAUL (10/5): Highly recommended - Couldn’t fault it and extremely good value for money
- Diana (6/5): Expected better - On arrival we were told there was no food being served (bank holiday weekend), bed mattresses have seen better days. Breakfast was excellent
- Amanda (10/5): - Lovely clean rooms and b&b amazing people really accommodated all our needs even doing breakfast very early so friendly our second stay with the coach and horses will def stay again excellent food lovely staff
- Sean (10/5): - Lovely people, lovely room. Definitely will book again for next year. Perfect if you are attending The David Broome Centre!
- Thomas (6/5): - Nice staff, great side bonus of Italian village ruins within stones throw.I would come again.
- Amanda (10/5): - Excellent friendly staff who made us a packed lunch as we had to leave early on a morning and was to early for breakfast all round excellence
- Susan (8/5): - Have stayed several times before.
The bathroom definitely needs an update, looking tired and warn.
The staff and owners are very friendly and couldn’t do more if they tried. Lovely people.
We did feel the £20 per night price increase wasn’t warranted for the room though.
- Mags (10/5): - Stayed 3 nights whilst my daughter was competing at The Wales and West Show this weekend. Very convenient for the David Broome Event Centre, literally a few mins drive. Very pleased with the room, immaculately clean with a gorgeous view and much appreciated tea and coffee making facilities. Sadly due to early starts each morning we didn’t get to sample breakfast but we were offered packed lunches by the lovely staff. We will definitely return.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Friendly pub - It was very friendly and had a pleasant overnight stay. Thought the room was a bit tired though. But overall well supplied, with coffee/ tea etc.
- Jeff (2/5): What a Nightmare - We arrived 1.00 pm booked
The Food took ages to arrive The Gammon was fatty The eggs were over cooked The Chips were Greasy
We went back to our room to have a sleep until we went out later that night.
They left our windows open
The noise from the Beer Garden and the smell of Cigarette smoke
just terrible
The bed was like concrete not comfortable
We didn't sleep properly
The Bathroom was dirty
Not Happy
Booking was £80
The Food was £27
Spoilt our Celebration
I would like a refund
- A (10/5): Cleanliness and beyond - There was a definite pride from the owners and staff in the hotel and pub.
Every area was totally clean and attention had been paid to what their guests would need for their stay.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Such a lovely place to stay with fabulous staff and great food, will definitely stay again
- Wendy (6/5): Make sure you know what you want for breakfast! - Comfortable enough room. This is my second stay.
This time I was a bit disconcerted to be asked at check in if I wanted breakfast (which was included) then asked to tell them what I wanted without seeing the choices. I'd just driven 3 1/2 hours it was the last thing I could think of.
The poached eggs were very nice and the lady serving was very friendly.
- Alouise (8/5): - Lovely friendly staff.
- Ian (10/5): Amazing Historic Gem - Beautiful period pub with stunning views. Great food and beer. Friendly staff. Cannot recommend this place enough!
- Ian (10/5): - Very hospitable pub and great value for money.
- Beryl (10/5): Cider Festival Ready - The landlord and landlady went above and beyond, helping with any issues, the room was large, clean and comfortable, it had everything needed, the breakfast was very nice. We stayed 4 nights, we were attending the Caldecott castle Cider festival, I twisted my ankle on the Roman wall, I was given a support bandage and offered pain killers, husband lost his phone, within 20 minutes, the landlord had phoned a friend who phoned a friend and his phone was with security waiting for us to collect the next day. I would highly recommend this place, the Roman history was something we did not expect, if you are interested in Roman history go stay here it’s a full village with walls you can walk on
- Andre (10/5): Beatiful country escape - Fantastic place, very friendly staff and cliental. Clean and tidy rooms, TV, on suite, great breakfast, Will be back for sure.
- Deborah (10/5): - My friend lost her necklace down the back of the toilet, the lady was very helpful in trying to retrieve it.
- Charlotte (10/5): - We could not fault the property or the staff. They were all very welcoming and looked after us very well. The meals were delicious and Kate is to be commended for her home cooking.
- Owen (8/5): Good Hotel, Clean & Comfy Bedroom Good Food - Very well priced B&B. Rooms bright and airy, Comfortable and Clean. Tea and Coffee, Comfortable bed.
Room Fan was welcome for the warm day that I stayed
Breakfast was cooked to order and was of good quality. Staff were very pleasant and couteous.
- Jacqueline (8/5): Nice to Know - Very nice, unfortunately @ large Party was booked. It would have been good to have been informed they were not providing food after not eating all day. We booked in earlier, left and returned expecting to have a meal, it came as a surprise, lucky we had a scotch egg each as we hadn’t eaten lunch .
- Christopher (8/5): - Very friendly staff. The room was fine for a one-night stay, clean, and the shower was ok. Door lock a bit tricky. We had an evening meal which was excellent value.
- andrew (8/5): Great - Great village hotel with friendly staff
- David (8/5): Good overnighter - Staff were very friendly and helpful and were more engaged at a personal level.
The area was very quiet and the room had lots of light with a lovely view. Room was clean and the overall experience for a stopgap was very good and made a change from the chains.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The landlord and staff were exceptionally friendly and professional. The pub caters for both locals and visitors in an extremely pleasant location. The building is well set out for eating or just having a few pints. Accommodation was clean, tidy and quiet...highly recommended.
- Herlinde (10/5): Such a friendly welcome - Absolutely amazing venue, beautiful room, such friendly people, fantastic food and drinks.
Well kept gardens and play space.
- c (10/5): Recommend will stay again when in the area - Stayed 2 nights, everything worked, comfy clean bed. Nice breakfast and evening meal. Friendly staff made you feel welcome no issues, but feel had there been, it would have been sorted.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The staff were very friendly, helpful, accommodating and polite. Good level of cleanliness although, the disinfectant fumes were a little on the high side. Breakfast was nicely served, cooked and fresh. They also had a nice outdoor area. Thank you to all the staff for their good work and service.
- Lee (10/5): Great stay in a lovely friendly pub - Great nights stay at the coach and horses we stayed as were visiting Chepstow races what a find room was comfortable and clean with bottled water and plenty of tea and coffee the hotel was so lovely staff and locals really friendly made us feel so welcome as did the owner great breakfast also I would definitely stay again.

- Verified traveler (10/5): - This property had everything I needed for a quiet stay and when
I returned in the evening from my trips they had good selection of
food and ales that I could chose from the menu.
Would gladly stay there again if I need to stop over in the area.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Amazing food and extremely friendly staff , i went there twice already and i will return with the first occasion
- Denis (10/5): Perfect - Perfect
- Verified traveler (2/5): - The landlord is the rudest lady I've ever had to deal with.
- Harold (10/5): Brilliant - Loved it. - Could not have chosen a better place to stay. Although it was further from Newport than expected, we were pleased we choose this accommodation. Staff and other customers friendly and helpful.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Really friendly staff. Room was spacious, clean and beds are very comfortable.
- Jamie (10/5): - Nice place to stay when working away , nice atmosphere, friendly staff . And excellent food, and they’ve got sky sports will deffo stay again
- Corine (10/5): Gem of a find - Fantastic stay here room was clean and the food in the restaurant was fab. A good place to visit if you have Children as the play area is simply the best.
- John (8/5): - Overall experience good and would stay again.
Had chicken curry for evening meal which was good and well priced.
One pedantic point is that I asked for no beans with cooked breakfast and yes I got them and lots of them!
- Lisa (10/5): - Stayed for 1 night. Room very nice & bed very comfortable. Staff very hospitable.
- Nicholas (8/5): easy access to speedway stadium - quiet bed and breakfast with easy access to Cardiff friendly staff and very clean rooms highly recommended
- Verified traveler (8/5): Friendly & Comfortable - More than a British pub, this inn was larger but had the same feel as a standard bed & breakfast place. Only real issue was the wifi - worked in the dining room but not in our room.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Very happy and friendly staff. Good breakfast - Lovely place and lovely atmosphere with a great breakfast.
- paul (10/5): Great Welcome and Hopsitiality throughout - I was really welcomed and team looked after me for the 5 days there, would stay here again.
- derek (10/5): Brilliant - . The staff were brilliant,
Breakfast was listed as continental, but was actually a full English, which was one of the best that I have had for a long time
- Deb (8/5): Very quaint hotel in a small, quiet village - The hotel was a little hard to find but when we arrived, the staff was more than accommodating. The room was small but clean. Breakfast was delicious.
- Jan (10/5): Very Friendly - We enjoyed our stay and felt very welcome. There is a great playground for kids in the back, so I would recommend it for families.
- Lisa (8/5): Lovely place to stay - The staff were lovely and I am really glad I chose it. The room was impeccably clean and it had a nice feel about it. The only thing is that my room was directly above a conservatory area of the pub that was emanating light and there were no blackouts on the windows, so I couldn't sleep properly.
- Jo (4/5): It served a purpose. - The pub staff were all very friendly and attentive. The place generally and the room were clean. The beds were AWFUL!! Twin beds that were squeaky and not well made at all, to the point my boyfriend had to take the mattress off the bed at 4am due to being woken up every time he moved. Mine wasn't as bad because it was against a wall but still, wasn't great.
We had been to a gig at Caldicot Castle so served the sleeping purpose but wouldn't suggest a romantic weekend away!
- Jane (8/5): Spend a night in a real Roman town! - We used the B&B facilities. We had a very comfortable room that was simple but included TV, tea and coffee making facilities, en-suite bathroom with standing shower instead of a bath, and an excellent choice at breakfast. There is a huge garden overlooking countryside and good children's play facilities. The pub is situated within the 3 m high walls of a Roman town! Well worth walking round after breakfast. Then visit the neatly excavated and maintained Roman town that is literally across the road. It was a lovely surprise to find a nice pub/B&B and a large historic site within the same town - that's both our interests catered for!
- david (8/5): Coach and horses - Generally good, food was good , rooms are ok but nothing spectacular, Main light didn't work
- Suzanne M. (8/5): - Comfortable and convenient to our plans.
- Stuart (10/5): Going to stay there again - Staff were excellent could not fault them at all
- Not Provided (8/5): Friendly staff and comfortable room - Standard pub menu, wel cooked and served. Will return.
- Gayle (8/5): Nice pub, Friendly staff,Good food - We had Room 1 a Double room, overlooking the valley from one window and the garden from the other window,we had stayed here before, and will stay again, The bed and pillows are firm, Good full Welsh breakfast,We had evening dinner on our first night, The slice of homemade steak and kidney pie, with fresh vegetables was Really good, I would recommend this pub for evening meals, prices are also very good. Caldicot Castle and village are only 1.1/2 miles away, and well worth a visit, entry is free unless there is an event on, it has lots of lovely walks within the grounds and dogs are welcome.
