- Carlo Clemente (8/5): Great 2-night Ryokan stay to explore the Hakone area. - Great Ryokan experience. It has several Onsen options: traditional bath within the room, private onsen, public onsen (open to hotel guests), and Open Air onsen. It's a bit of a walk (800m 10 mins) from the train station, and most places to eat. But they provide a shuttle from the hotel upon departure. Since they were fully booked and we booked a bit late, we were not able to avail of their meal options. A bit pricey, as for most Ryokan options.
- Joshua (10/5): Excellent place to stay and would stay again!! - Beautiful place to stay, great gardens, the private onsen was fantastic, the room was an excellent experience to stay in! The staff were great!! The food was unbelievable!!
- Stacey (2/5): Do not stay here. Absolutely awful. - Not a lot. Avoid. £950 for 2 nights, no food included. Like sleeping on the floor of a tired caravan in wales. Pathetic. Everything. Very shabby and tired. A complete rip off venue.
- Matthew (10/5): The perfect escape from the city - Fantastic room and baths, including one for private multi-person use. Super friendly and helpful staff.
- Shikha (4/5): Did not feel like good value for the price - Good location. Pretty gardens. My stay unfortunately did not feel like good value for the price paid.
I had originally planned to travel with a friend who had to cancel due to illness. I requested a cancellation three days prior to arrival, but the property’s policy required a 100% charge. While I understand that policies must be upheld, it was disappointing that no flexibility was offered given the circumstances.
I decided to proceed with the stay alone. Upon arrival, check-in was somewhat challenging due to limited English communication. The staff member assisting me was kind and well-intentioned, but overall the service experience did not meet expectations for a ryokan at this price point.
I had also requested to arrange a kaiseki dinner at the property, based on the photos which emphasize strong dining experience and overall positioning of the ryokan. Unfortunately, this could not be accommodated even with more than 24 hours’ notice, which was surprising for a property in this category.
Additionally, the private onsen bath did not feel as clean or well-maintained as I had anticipated.
Overall, while the stay was acceptable, it did not feel aligned with the premium pricing. At a lower price point, the experience might have felt reasonable, but at this rate I believe there are other properties in Hakone that offer stronger value and a more refined experience.

- lior (8/5): Beautiful, relaxing stay. - It is a beautiful property, with a nice private onsen The onsen in the room wasn’t very welcoming, the futon was a bit hard to sleep on, and the staff doesn’t understand English at all
- mary (10/5): -
- Gloria (9/5): -
- Eleni (9/5): Lovely ryokan with extremely hospitable staff - The location was very convenient, just a short walk from the station where direct trains from Tokyo arrive. The gardens were so beautiful, the hut was cosy and comfortable, and the onsen was very enjoyable, but the best part about our stay was the hospitality of the woman who served us. Without speaking much English she managed to make us feel so welcomed and went out of her way to make sure we’d have a pleasant stay! Everything felt really authentic! Not much except maybe having raw fish for breakfast takes some getting used to but it was part of the tradition we signed up to experience.
- Li (10/5): -
- Christy (9/5): We thoroughly enjoyed this ryokan and would highly recommend! - The staff was wonderful. It was a lovely ryokan stay!
- Simon (3/5): Oversold - Good location, friendly staff They sold the room as being ‘open air bathroom’ in fact it was semi open. The price was JPY140,000 per night and for that I would expect their advertising to not mislead.
- Kate (8/5): Fantastic, traditional stay. We loved it! - We stayed for one night and it was exactly what we were after. An authentic Japanese Ryokan. We loved our slightly bossy Japanese host. Our Japanese is terrible and her English was limited but we got by. She was very kind to my teenage son. The food was traditional and authentic. Did we love it all? No, but we wanted to try a traditional meal. There was plenty of miso and rice to fill my son up when he didn't want to try the more adventurous dishes. The beds were comfy and everything very clean. We loved the clothing you are given to wear around the hotel and enjoyed the single sex baths and the family bath (which is available anytime, as long as it isn't being used by other guests). The garden is beautiful and its a great location - easy walk from the station and shops. A written explanation in English of the clothing would have been great.
- Masaki (10/5): -
- An (10/5): Relaxing, peaceful stay~ wish we stayed longer - Gorgeous, peaceful, clean property!
- Jonathan (10/5): -
- Nathaniel (9/5): - The room was peaceful and attractive. The kaiseki meals were so fun. We enjoyed tasted so many different things, and everything was beautifully-presented. We loved the on-property onsen and the beautiful gardens.
The only staff member we really interacted with was Kimiko, who is an absolute treasure. She doesn't speak much English but we didn't have much issue communicating anyways. She took good care of us. The location a short walk from the train station is also very convenient.
- Jenessa (10/5): -
- Elijah (9/5): -
- Agnieszka (10/5): A place to experience real Japanese hospitality, relax in onsen and savour delicious meals - We chose Yamagaso for our first night in Japan and it turned out to be the best place we stayed during the entire trip. What I loved most about this traditional ryokan is the atmosphere: each room is actually a separate cabin set within a beautiful, calm garden, which makes the whole property feel incredibly intimate and peaceful.
The highlight of our stay was the semi-private onsen, where you can enjoy the baths together as a couple or with your family—perfect for relaxing after a long day of travel. The kaiseki dinner and traditional Japanese breakfast, both served directly in our room, were exceptional and made the experience even more special.
The staff were wonderfully helpful, both at reception and during meals, taking the time to explain each dish in English so we could fully appreciate the cuisine. Overall, Yamagaso was the perfect introduction to Japan—a serene and authentic retreat right in the middle of busy Hakone. Highly recommended. Nothing, everything was spot on!
- PETIT IMBERT (10/5): - Tres beau Ryokan,décor fabuleux.
- Bruno (8/5): - Great place for a relaxing stay in Hakone. The amenities are great and service is very nice with attentive and helpful staff. We really enjoyed the experience
- Anastasia (8/5): - Amazing experience of staying in Japanese Ryokan.
It is a bit dated but very authentic and enjoyable for couple of nights
- Qi Yang (10/5): - Very nice Japanese style resort with nice half board dining and private bath
- Gian Filippo Maria (9/5): -
- Edward (9/5): -
- lindsay (10/5): - Lovely old Japan style hotel
The meals were amazing
We loved the beauty and service at the hotel
Thank you
- Maria (10/5): Great service from - The gardens, the villa.
- Vickie (9/5): A truly remarkable experience in a beautiful setting. - Beautiful traditional ryokan. Gorgeous gardens and setting. Located near the train station with a beautiful stream on the scenic walk to the property We loved the property and the service. Kimiko was very kind and patient. The food was beautifully prepared and everything was seasonal. We felt bad that some dishes were a bit unusual for our American palates. We know that some of the more special dishes were rare and expertly prepared. We tried everything though. And we will forever remember this remarkable experience. We want to apologize for not eating everything we were served. The portions were very large. We do not like to waste food. And apologize that we did not eat everything.
- Verified traveler (6/5):
- Justin (2/5): No Dinner - Booked through hotels.com. I thought that, since this was a ryokan and other reviews mentioned the amazing Kaiseki style dinner they served, that dinner would come with my booking.
There was no additional option when booking to specify whether I wanted dinner or not; so I figured it was implied/included, as it has been for other Ryokan bookings.
Turns out, somehow, despite being $600+ a night, my booking did NOT include dinner.
This wasn't made clear to me until after dinner never showed up the first night.
So, after bathing and putting on my yukata and relaxing with a beer, I had to trudge back outside in my streetwear where the only thing open was an Izakaya with a 1.5 hour wait.
I complained to the staff in the morning, and they refused to do anything to make it right. If I wanted dinner that following night, I'd have to pay 20,900 yen more.
This overall RUINED my experience for these two days of my trip, which were also, by far, the most expensive accommodations.
Given this I cannot award any stars to this place.
The actual room and hotel grounds were nice, but not worth getting my trip screwed over.
DO NOT BOOK. Find something else, one that will not screw you over on the experience.
- Ellen (10/5): It was perfect with sweet and helpful staff. - Beautiful.
- Camille (10/5): Exceptional - This was absolutely perfect. Comfortable and so relaxing. Lived the private Onsen and the gardens. Rooms were spacious and so comfortable.
- Bernadette (10/5): - We came to Japan to experience the culture. Hakone hotel Sensei was perfect. Beautiful room with private onsen. We also experienced the open air onsen. The dinner and breakfast was fantastic. My only complaint was too much food.
- Henrik (6/5): Autentic place, but too expensive to value. - overpriced hotel and far too turisty in Hakone
- Xin (10/5): Exceptional - Garden and services, room is big
- Caroline (10/5): - Loved my stay here! Everything was well organised, the semi-private onsen was always free when I wanted to go. The little ryokan was comfy and warm. Would recommend.
- Irisz (6/5): It’s definitely overpriced - The garden and the onsen is lovely.
The house can be quite cold when the weather is chilly, the breakfast could have been much better : (
- William (1/5): Stay somewhere else - Nothing. The most atrocious stay I’ve ever had. Highly advise to spend your money elsewhere. For the money you need to book here, there’s so many better options. Old, dirty, cold rooms. Meals are not special. Honestly disgusted with the experience.
- Adam (9/5): Superb -
- Aris (7/5): Beautiful place but their customer service is in serious need of update. - It’s undeniably pretty, a very cute setting with small traditional pavilions scattered inside a Japanese garden. We could not find half-board (dinner) plans online so we booked with breakfast included, and I called them to ask to add dinner. Complete refusal. It’s shocking, as it’s the first time that a ryokan (and one where we pay upwards of 2000 usd to stay) just refuses to add a meal plan. Of course we would pay extra, and I called them 10 days in advance. But they said they cannot add dinner (unless we cancel our reservation and try to rebook another one with dinner plan!!!) and we should please understand. They were not even fully booked since it was a chill mid week period. So, we had to take a crying 2 month old baby and venture out into the rain to find a place to have dinner. This significantly spoiled the experience for us.
- agathe (10/5): - The stay at Yamagaso was a unique experience. I recommend doing the half board as the Kaseiki dinner and the breakfast were fantastic! We also love the private onsen and the convenient access to the other onsen at the hotel next door.
- Aastika (9/5): It’s a quaint rayoken with a private onsen that we loved - Loved the serene atmosphere and the quiet surroundings. An experience of a traditional japanese home stay like no other
- Yasaman (4/5): Disappointing -
- Iris (10/5): Exceptional - This was definitely the highlight of my Japan trip. It was an astounding Japanese garden and traditional house in the middle of Hakone. It was quiet and when you go outside you’re greeted by a river and astounding mountain view side.
The cabin is quite large and surrounded by ponds and trees. The futon was comfy and the AC was effective driving the cold away. I’m very sad leaving the kotatsu behind.
The kaiseki meals are delicious and quite a bit as well I’m always full and haven’t finished the meals. Nothing
- Goldis (2/5): I regret not staying at the nearby Hyatt—it would have been a far better choice. - While the front desk staff left much to be desired and the concierge service was nonexistent, the grounds staff stood out for their kindness and helpfulness, making an effort to enhance the overall experience. Our accommodation was a lackluster attempt at replicating the Ryokan style—though if the goal was to make living arrangements as inconvenient as possible, they succeeded admirably.
The main room offered a seating area supposedly suited for a tea ceremony, surrounded by an unsightly jumble of wires and a TV set. Yes, there was a TV, but WiFi? Apparently not part of the "authentic" experience.
The lighting seemed intentionally designed to stay behind you at all times, making it nearly impossible to find items in your suitcase—assuming, of course, you could access your suitcase, as there was no storage space to tuck it away or shelves to organize clothing.
The pièce de résistance of the bungalow’s design was the doorway to the corridor, standing at a proud 5 feet tall. While I’m not particularly tall, I’m unfortunately a bit taller than the average man from two centuries ago and several times contacted the horizontal beam with my head.
Adding to the charm were visible cracks and grime between the floors and walls, a testament to their disregard for modern Japanese craftsmanship. The bathroom, too, seemed designed for maximum inconvenience, as if they thought, "Why stop at mediocrity when we can push for outright frustration?"
I could go on, but suffice it to say this was an exercise in how not to do hospitality.
- suzann (10/5): - Wow! What an amazing experience. We had a beautiful stay , our only regret was that we could not stay longer. We highly recommend this traditional Ryokan. Kimiko our host is a beautiful souls and made ourv stay that much more special. The food is incredible, the private ohnsen was better than expected. You will not be disappointed with a stay here.
- Howard (8/5): Very good -
- Connie (10/5): Excellent stay - Loved the whole setup, the service and the private onset, it’s a magical experience for us. I booked a night w breakfast included thinking it will be traditional Japanese breakfast as per the pictures and review photos. However, during our stay the breakfast served was not Japanese style and I was a little disappointed.
- Yi (5/5): Passable -
- Anna (10/5): Even in a downpour - The staff was very helpful and friendly. We had two sets of friends, one that stayed here and another at Senki. We both LOVED the experience. We came during a downpour and the staff were so kind and carried our luggage to our rooms. They even dried the outside of them off. The futons were very comfortable and we all enjoyed our breakfasts. The hot spring options were great! We didn't get to experience the upstairs outdoor one with the view because of the heavy rain though, which was to no fault of their own. They also helped us ship our luggage and call a taxi when we were having trouble with the GO app due to it being a holiday. When we left in the taxi, they helped load our suitcases and they gave us a warm goodbye. Both sets of friends agreed that we highly recommend both here at Yamagaso and Senki.
- Jessica (10/5): - We had a fantastic stay at Yamagaso. We were able to drop our bags off at the main hotel so we could go sightseeing before check-in. Dinner was a delicious kaiseki meal served in our room. It was great having our own private bath in our villa with hot spring water. Our host Momo-san was sweet and very helpful. If we ever return to Hakone we would love to stay here again.
- Mariflor (7/5): It was ok, but I can’t pass the smell. Low value for money - Japanese old-fashion establishment. Staff were very kind. Our room had a strong smell of damp
- Melinda (10/5): - Gorgeous and serene ryokan in Hakone, beautiful facilities and rooms, amazing kasekei dinner right in our suite!
- Irina (10/5): Fantastic!! - We had the most delightful stay - nice, sweet people at the hotel, exquisite food, calm and beautiful surroundings, natural spring baths. It was an outstanding experience. We didn’t want to leave… Hope to be back one day. Thanks 🙏
- Matthew (10/5): - The ryoken is absolutely beautiful and the staff are wonderful. It's a picturesque place to stay and not too far from the station or restaurants/bars. It was an amazing experience to stay here!
- Cameron (10/5): Exceptional - I loved everything about Yamagosa, It was truly a small slice of authentic japanese paradise. The inner grounds of Yamagosa were beautiful from the gorgeous pathways through the gardens to the trickling sound of water throughout the grounds.. The private onsen bath catered to my partner and I having Tattoos, and the staff went above and beyond to make sure you were comfortable. The perfect place to unwind and relax..... 10 out of 10 There was nothing I didn't like about Yamagosa......
- Lior (8/5): Great place. There are good options for lower prices - beautiful room and facilities .
amazing public bath on the roof.
Good western breakfast shower did not feel private - plenty of windows.
price too high
- Dora (10/5): Friendly, beautiful and delicious kaiseki meals - The place was great, but what we most enjoyed were the meals, we asked for breakfast and dinner and they were exquisite, our best stay in Japan by far.
- Roy (7/5): Really good experience of local Rayokan and traditional Japanese cuisine - Food was really good we had dinner and breakfast served in the room and it was excellent quality, very authentic local food No wifi in the rom
- Stephen (10/5): Beautiful and authentic stay - worth the price tag - - Absolutely stunning gardens and buildings everywhere you looked
- Your room is its own little house. Very exclusive.
- The old lady who looked after us was so warm, caring and generous.
- Had a private “family” hot bath for one group at a time to use, which was a nice touch.
- Able to use the indoor and rooftop outdoor baths of the neighbouring hotel (easily connected by a staircase)
- Very peaceful and serene - Nothing. Worth the high price tag.
- Mercedes (10/5): For our first trip to Japan, we wanted to have a real traditional experience; staying at Yamagaso was absolutely amazing -
- Sungwook (10/5): - A very unique experience in a fairly traditional ryokan-style lodging. Hot spring readily accessible. Peaceful, soothing, and healing stay.
- Robert (10/5): Exceptional -
- Valerie-lai (9/5): Superb -
- Danielle (10/5): - I had a wonderful stay! The room and property were absolutely gorgeous, the staff so welcoming and nice, and surrounding area stunningly beautiful. I highly recommend staying here and plan to visit again on my next trip to the Hakone!
- Gallagher (10/5): Exceptional -
- Heidi (5/5): It was a good experience but I won't come again. - I liked the building and facilities, the cleanliness and the location. I didn't think it was good value for money.
Too much fish and no choice in what we ate. Breakfast was disappointing and although we were after an authentic experience, we hoped to have some choice in what we ate.
Exceedingly difficult to communicate with the key person looking after us. She spoke no English.
While she was caring, she was overbearing, wouldn't leave us in peace to eat and made the whole experience stressful.
- Lauren (10/5): Special, unique, memorable experience - This place was the most special and unique experience. I agonized over where to stay in Hakone and so so glad this is what I chose. My husband and I had such a great time in our beautiful room, Chouji, which was more like a small house. The service was so sweet and attentive and the meals served were extensive and so good. The onsens were all very nice and relaxing. We stayed one night, which was perfect for us, but could have stayed longer.
- Michelle (10/5): - Fantastic food, accommodations and staff. Could not have been happier with our stay.
- Thorhallur (10/5): - Absolutely superb. Food and service was so good!
- David (10/5): - best part of my trip. highly recommended
- Ramos (9/5): Lovely ryokan! - Everything! It was a great stay, especially for one night! We loved that there was a private bath and there were no reservations needed to go! The onsen was wonderful and we would definitely come again! The inn had everything we needed and more, we wished we stayed longer in order to experience more of the area and yamagaso! One thing is that we didn't get any food included with the booking and wished we did as we were hungry when we got there! It would be good if we were warned a shorter stay meant no meals ;u;
- Magda (9/5): Extemely expensive yet pleasant ryokan - Very nice ryokan made u feel like u r at home ❤️ good private onsen experience don’t miss it
The dinner was traditional Japanese staff which we didn’t know but enjoyed almost all of them
Very gentle staff I texted the property many times nobody answered we should know about check in to the next building before our arrival.
Extremely high priced for what is offered. I think half it should be priced about 30% lower so that it’s attractive. Now, while we enjoyed our stay, I believe it was a waste of money.
- Eden (6/5): Beautiful setting, but slightly chaotic and not great value for money - The ryoken is in a beautiful setting. The gardens are lovely, and the rooms are beautiful. The location is also good, only a 10-minute walk to the centre of Hakone, but still very quiet.
Check in was fairly easy, a lovely girl helped us with our suitcases and gave us the room information. Once inside the room, we were served green tea and sweets and shown the different facilities.
The beds are comfortable, and the rooms are air conditioned so they don't get too cold. There is also a heating pad under the matress which makes it really comfortable.
The shower has good pressure and gets nice and hot (apart from the issue we had with the dial - see below). They also kindly provide umbrellas for you to take out and about with you.
In general, the staff are incredibly eager to help and are incredibly kind. The whole experience was mildly chaotic. Some of this is our fault - if we had spoken Japanese, it would have been much easier, as the lady who I think was the owner didn't speak any English (though she was very patient).
The shower temperature is very stiff - my mum didn't even realise you could even turn it, and ended up having a cold shower before I managed to move it for her.
There were a few things that we were told that turned out to be different - e.g. we were told that someone would come to our room to take us to breakfast, but that didn't happen, so we ended up going to the front desk, where there wasn't anyone, and phoning someone to ask where to go. We were also told that if we were happy for our room not to be cleaned then we would be given two sets of two complimentary drinks as a thank you. We chose what were labelled as sodas, but only one set ever turned up late at night on the last night of our stay, and it turned out to actually be cider, not soda, and neither of us drink.
Breakfast was in the cafe in the adjoining hotel, which was fine but a bit of a departure from the surroundings of the ryoken. We were given coffee, a shot glass of juice, and a roll, slice of toast, a salad and an egg, which was nice but not particularly filling, especially for the amount extra we paid for it.
Additional note: this is not the fault of the hotel, but advice to other travellers. We had opted to save some money and not have dinner at the ryoken - looking back this was a mistake. The restaurants in Hakone close incredibly early (between 1700 and 1900) and we were turned away for service from three separate places during opening hours (we aren't sure why, they told us there were no more tables). The atmosphere felt slightly hostile and I think the expectations is that foreigners will eat in their ryoken. We ended up eating both dinners of snacks from the 7/11.
- Toby (10/5): Understated quiet luxury - Quiet luxury at its best! Traditional ryokan equipped with all the necessary modern amenities for a comfortable stay. Enshrouded in the womb of nature with the sound of trickling water was the perfect lullaby of one of the best sleeps I’ve ever experienced in my life! Be careful of the low beams of traditional Japanese residence. Take some getting used to or not at all. Hit my head 7 times within 3 days!

- Adam (8/5): Very good -
