Guest Reviews
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Difficult to find at night. Would have liked lamp At bedside
- John (10/5): Tired kayakers - The Teacherage was very quiet, clean and relaxing. The hostess was accommodating and helpful. We enjoyed breakfast on the side porch in a country setting with birds and trees.
- Brian (10/5): Thumbs Up - Wonderful hosts; cozy getaway.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - This was quite the little surprise. This house was awesome. The owners of this property were great!! We were met at the door, as we pulled into the drive. If we are ever in this area, I will stay here again.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The property had an old time charm. Very quiet area.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The innkeepers were friendly and accomodating. The location was perfect for our planned activities at nearby state parks. We appreciate the adaptive reuse of an historic structure.
- Gail (8/5): Convient and affordable - The Teacherage was an interesting house. Historic background. The room was a bit austere, could have used a few touches, like cups/glasses/rugs (was chilly on the feet).
Bathroom was simple, there again not terribly welcoming However, the host was very nice and price was good.
Trash had not been emptied and mirror could have used a cleaning
- Sylvia (8/5): B&B - We really liked the couple that run this B&B. They do all they can to make your stay great. It is differently not make for longer stays then a few nights No tv in room, had to share a bathroom, we were in the up stairs bedroom, hard stairs to climb and the most hardest thing was we had to be quite all the time like at 7pm we were asked to be quiet.
- Kim (8/5): - My room was clean and very comfortable and the innkeepers were welcoming and friendly. Some of the reviews had me a little worried but I am glad I disregarded them. I will stay there again when I go to Norfolk.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - This is an out-of-the-way B&B. It looks run down on the outside, but it was quite nice. The owners were very friendly and accommodating.
- Neil (6/5): It has potential or is on downhill slide - Odd 48 hour prior arrival time notification required to make sure host is there.
All reservations done via on-line registration through an offshore provider who is not friendly. Did not see a phone number on the website.
Did not feel open, relaxing, or particularly welcome. Felt like we had to stay in bedroom or kitchen.
Require guests to haul away their own trash!
Room was hot. Sleep Number mattress in a waterbed frame, but firmness control did not work.
Bathroom marginally clean.
Kitchen use allowed, but BYO food and pots and dishes.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Very quaint and quiet place. Friendly staff and convenient location to the Great Dismal Swamp
- Jeffrey (10/5): Comfort, quiet, and a glimpse into history awaits! - This beautiful historic landmark is being lovingly restored by a friendly and dedicated couple. Our room was clean, nicely furnished, and included a very comfortable queen bed and private bath. We were served a sumptuous breakfast at 8am each morning except our last, since we had to leave at 5 am. Our hosts left us a del service breakfast instead, and before hitting the road we enjoyed coffee, oatmeal, yoghurt, and cheese. The parlor features many interesting books, a marvelous collection of decor and furnishings, magazines, a chess set, and photographs depicting local history. We had breakfast one sunny morning on the side porch, where they keep the croquet set.
Sunbury is one of many quiet little towns with long histories in the region, and while it has few stores, it offers lovely country drives to places of interest from Edenton and Hertford to Murfreesboro, and even Suffolk Virginia. It sits on the edge of the Great Dismal Swamp, with all of its natural and historic tours and activities. The Swamp was a major link in the Underground Railroad. Nearby Scotland Neck boasts an interesting bird sanctuary, with thousands of birds from around the world.
The Teacherage itself has a fascinating history, which our hosts were enthusiastic to share. We felt right at home there, got great sleep, great food, and enjoyed the very special ambiance of this bucolic North Carolina bed and breakfast!
- Verified traveler (8/5): hidden gem - I would recommend this to a friend with one caveat. If you are looking for a fancy upscale inn this is not your place. If you are looking for a simple place with soul then you'll feel at home.
- Sherrie (8/5): - The bed was super comfortable but the room stayed pretty warm the entire time we were there (July). I never could connect to the wifi and cell signal is non existent for AT&T. Be prepared to travel at least 15-20 minutes for food. Perfect location to visit Dismal Swamp and Merchants Millpond State Parks. Everyone was very friendly.
- Verified traveler (2/5): Nothing like it looks - Bad experience nothing like I thought it would be.
- Carol (4/5): Mattress deflated - The air mattress on one side did not hold the air. I wrote comment on earlier email response. We left at midnight and drove 4.5 hours home.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Excellent value. Superb service, lovely place. - I was late due to a late start and then getting lost. One of the hosts waited for me to arrive!! The service was superb, the price very reasonable, and the stay was excellent. The room was huge, the bathroom immaculately clean, and the bed&breakfast was lovely. I came for business, and plan to have my family stay here on a future vacation!
- Heather (6/5): - Disappointed no breakfast was offered.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Great stop in the middle of NC - Just passing through, found a cheap place to stay on my way to Maryland, so I bunked at the B&B. The owners were fantastic, very nice and warm people. My only complaint was the fact that there wasn't much air circulation, or a ceiling fan, which made it a little hard for me to get to sleep. I'll know next time to bring a small fan. Otherwise, fantastic experience and wouldn't change a thing!
