Mattress let the room down badly and has been mentioned by other reviewers for some time. Surely the first thing you would do when improving the room. Bad smell in landing outside room. Carpet between bar area and room old and dirty. No free sockets in room.

• Sally O'Carroll (9/5): - Loved the view and sound of the river outside my bedroom window. The only thing I was disappointed with was the bar and restaurant being closed through the day and there was nowhere nearby to have lunch.
• Keith (10/5): We only stayed for one night on route back home. The venue was clean and the staff lovely. - The Staff are welcoming and friendly. The room was a nice size and very comfortable. The bathroom was a good size and the whole room was very clean. The breakfast was exceptional and very filling for the day ahead. Sorry could not think of anything bad about hte place and will definetly stay again if we are in the area
• David (5/5): Mediocre Bed for the night, not very inviting, tired and run down, no eye for detail - Location Room above kitchen extractor fan, noisy & smell. Lights outside left on 24/7 so lit room all night. Plug in sink didn’t hold water, had to refill sink 6 times to have a wash, general lack of hanging in bathroom and small space to move around. Breakfast overcooked and items missing most days, limited availability.

I was impressed that the female breakfast attendee was able to remember me and my circumstances from a previous visit. I found the lighting in my room to be somewhat dim and would have liked to have been able to fully secure my room with a deadlock on door.

• Sharon (7/5): A nice, comfortable place to stay with great food and friendly staff and a lovely view of the river. - The location, with a very quiet room overlooking the River Dart. The room was large and very clean. Dinner was delicious and there was an excellent cooked breakfast the next morning. Friendly and helpful staff. Lights unnecessarily left on outside the hotel all night (my pet peeve - I need a dark room to sleep properly). The bed was comfortable but a lighter duvet option would have been appreciated as I was a bit too hot. The shower had plenty of hot water, but the water pressure was weak, so not very satisfactory. I was kept awake for much of the (windy) night by the sound of an unfastened door/window banging somewhere in the building.

• Thomasina (7/5): Nice place, it was cheap for that time of year, I think they could have put us in a nicer room which would have inspired - It was a beautiful location, clean with good food and a very nice breakfast. The bathroom was uncomfortable as it was tiny and the water pressure very low, our room was tiny also.

• Francis (8/5): Excellent location and friendly staff. - Excellent food. Breakfast was very well cooked and generous quantities, so filling that only a light snack required until dinner. Had a pizza one evening which was probably one of the best had in along time. The room had great views of the river and had plenty of space. Large double bed with big screen tv. Very clean. The bathroom was tiny. Had all the usual facilities but was cramped and very little room to move. An extra couple of feet added to the dimensions would make a huge difference.
• Peter (9/5): Execellent but cold in the room. - The staff were very helpful, the food was excellent, my room had an amazing view over the river Dart. There was very little or no central heating in the room and it was cold. When the radiators did come on they were luke warm and did very little to heat up the room.

• Christine (4/5): Glad only spent a few days won’t be using it again. - Food was adequate. Could have been better eg basic white or brown bread granary would have been nice. Same croissants in dish for 4 days. Sheets and towels clean and changed regularly Rooms were shabby. Carpets on landing stained. Bell pulls in en suite were filthy at base. Insufficient room to sit after a meal eg quiz night took over whole pub therefore had to go back to bedroom. As was there with a friend and we had separate rooms it was difficult to relax as there was only 1 easy chair in each room.

• Della (8/5): - The rooms were clean. Staff friendly. Breakfast was really good - quality ingredients for the full English breakfast. We had a main meal in the pub and it was good pub food for the price. Someone is really overly keen on air fresheners. They are everywhere around the rooms and corridors and the smell was really overwhelming. We turned off the Glade plug-ins we could find in our rooms for the duration of our stay. My Son has asthma and the thick perfumed air was really too much. Plus you surely don't need it because the place was very clean! Maybe try just a few natural oil scents instead? Anyway - that is constructive criticism because otherwise the stay was very good. Thank you!

• Vannnie (9/5): Excellent value for money, lovely staff, great location! - We stayed one night in one of the smallest double roomx (Mallard) which was perfectly adequate for our needs. It was lovely and quiet other than the soothing sound of the river which may have been louder than usual due to the recent heave rain, but it wasn't so loud as to be disturbing (with the windows closed - I can't speak for the summer!) Everything was lovely and clean, the bed was comfy (a little soft for my husband though) and I slept really well. The bathroom was small, but the shower cubicle wasn't as tiny as some and looked quite new, although we didn't use the shower ourselves. A large or tall person may find the bathroom a bit of a squeeze for getting undressed/dressed but it was fine for us. Breakfast was included in the price and was delicious - a hot choice which included a fanatstic full English breakfast with cereals, fruit juice and pains au chocolate available too. Coffee was excellent! We arrived on a Tuesday afternoon and took advantage of the "Advent Calendar Special" for that day which was a free mince pie with a hot drink between 3 and 5pm. Those mince pies were delicious - obviously home made, and were warmed up for us. The tea was very good too and great value. The staff were all lovely, and we chatted with some locals in the bar who were typically friendly for Devon folk. The location was excellent as it was a couple of minutes from the main A38 Devon expressway and easy to reach Totnes where we were visiting family. Big car park too. Nothing!!

The staff were very friendly and the Christmas menu we had pre-booked was excellent as was breakfast the next day. We have stayed here before and will do so again. There wasn't anything to dislike.

• Glynn (3/5): A disappointing stay: pleasant staff but poor facilities. - The location alongside the River Dart is pleasant but marred by constant noise from the Totnes Road and from the Devon Expressway some yards farther away. 1. Lack of beverage options in the rooms - only tea and coffee provided, no bottled water. 2. Hot, dry atmosphere in the Inn - when mentioned this was met with indifference. 3. My 93 year old mother was unable to sleep in a small single room lacking an opening window. She resorted to jamming the door open all night. 4. A good evening meal was provided but there was a paucity of breakfast options. 5. The availability of TV channels in the rooms was poor.

Very cosy and tastefully decorated. We are looking forward to next May when we will be in the area again. Free Wifi. Will be booking a room here once more. Our only gripe was a small section of the floor next to the shower in our room. It was soft underfoot where there had obviously been a leak out of the shower base. If not for this, the place would have had a 10/10 from us.

The food was brilliant, especially the breakfast! Room was clean including the bathroom, loads of space! Unfortunately there were quite a few stairs and no lift. I have hip problems which caused slight problems but still enjoyed the stay.

• John (7/5): A great location for a stay by the river. - Great location right by the River Dart. It was wonderful watching wildlife out of the window and the river had a soothing sound at night. The food was ok...average pub grub with no surprises. The bed was small and uncomfortable. A thicker matteess would help no end.
• Russell (6/5): Have potential, but misses the mark. - Room was a good size and had a great view. The room was warm. Quite teh biggest kettle I've ever seen in a hotel room. Bed was oddly shaped crowned and too soft for my taste, shower cubicle was too small - I barely fitted in and I couldn't persuade any soap out of teh sqeezy bottle. The bedside lamp was too dull to read by, the room was noisy and as it was near the kitchen extractor vent it filled with cooking smells. Meals were workmanlike rather than inspirational. The desk was of no use to work on as it was filled with the hot drinks tray and there were no spare power sockets for laptops of phone charging. The bar was populated by noisy drunk local youths (at1930)

Finding my coat in the morning having inadvertently left it in the dining area the previous evening, Lovely location on the River Dart Room was very small and the double bed was barely a double, so very cosy! Being on the top floor with no lift.

• Gina (8/5): Good location for my work. - Fabulous staff who looked after me well - thank you. 8.00 am breakfast very late for work, ordered takeaway and it was lovely! Beautiful location. Room immaculate. Slow shower, luke warm water only, could not get the shower to get hot. The room was cold tried to turn on radiator and would not work - cold during the night. I reported it and new thermostats have been installed - teething troubles apparently. Lovely kettle but far too big to put under the tap, had to use the shower to fill it. Lots of stairs to the room but staff helped carry all my bags.

• Roger (6/5): Apart from the 2 issues mentioned we enjoyed our stay and the location was excellent - Room was a nice size, very clean with comfy king size bed, 3 seat sofa and a dressing table with stool. A very nice view overlooking the Dart river. Plus ample tea, coffee, biscuits and bottled water provided. Breakfast was great. We only had diner on the first night but that was also very good. 2 main issues: 1. The en suite bathroom; The light pull switch is too far away from the entry door - opposite side. The total area is very small and facilities are consequently difficult to use, the shower is immediately next to the toilet and there is very little space to get round it. The sink is immediately in front of the toilet and there is no adequate space to put toilet bags and things. I found it impossible to dry myself without opening the door and entering back into the bedroom. 2 Few electric points. There are no spare electric points easily available to charge mobiles, etc.

Massive portions and loads of variety. Single room was much bigger than I expected. It was a pleasant surprise. The river and fairy lights created a lovely ambience The room was noisy as it was over the bar. I was in GoldCrest which is a single.
