Guest Reviews
- Chris (6/5): Basic accommodation - The accommodation was basic, there was no chair in the room and only one light switch was put on all the lights. A bit cold in the night.
The chef was on holiday so no food was available.
Very handy for the station.
- Martin (6/5): - Acceptable considering daily rate when compared to other hotels
- Kelly (4/5): - I have stayed before in this place - just on this occasion very slow to get in my room and no towels and it was dirty this time . I would stay again though
- Kevin (6/5): Too hot to sleep. - When we first arrived in our room, the stands and some of the floor were covered in bird feces. The girl from the bar came up and cleaned the areas, then I wiped them down with an antibacterial cloth. The room was hot and stuffy, though the window had been open, which is how the pigeons got in. There was no fan available to move any of the semi cool air from outside into the room, nor was there any air moving, so the room remained hot and stuffy all night. There wasn't even a fan in the bathroom! The TV did not work, we could get sound, at times, but no picture. We did get internet. There was a store across the road. The room was spacious and "clean". I'm not sure if the bed was comfortable, as we didn't sleep well, if at all due to the extreme heat and stuffiness of the room.
- Lachlan (10/5): - A very good country pub, good food and a very restful overnight stay. Highly recommended.
- LIAM (2/5): Terrible. Should not be offered as a hotel - 🌟 Locomotive Hotel Review - A Journey into the Abyss 🌟
Having just completed a 6-hour pilgrimage from Essex to the promised lands of Eaglescliffe, I've discovered what can only be described as Fawlty Towers' unsuccessful younger brother. The Locomotive Hotel is, quite frankly, a masterclass in how to disappoint guests while simultaneously making Premier Inn look like The Ritz.
For the bargain price of £40, you too can experience what I can only assume is a social experiment gone wrong. The room comes complete with three different types of wallpaper (clearly inspired by the BBC's Changing Rooms circa 1998) all unified under a hastily applied coat of magnolia - because nothing says "we care" quite like paint that matches your nan's living room.
The bed appears to have been made by someone fleeing a crime scene, while the TV is so small I initially mistook it for a calculator. There's a desk without a chair - perhaps it's art installation commenting on the futility of work? Or maybe the chair is simply having a gap year finding itself in Ibiza.
The bathroom features a creative wall installation where previous guests have contributed to a collaborative art piece involving toilet paper and a hole in the wall. There's also a deceased fly stuck to the window - I've named him Geoffrey and we've become quite close.
The room's piece de resistance is the kicked-in door that's been "repaired" with
- Gordon (8/5): Basic but good value - Basic but clean and tidy and good vslue for money
- Timothy (10/5): - A simple room with on sweet toylet and shower quiet relaxing space
- Kelly (6/5): Get what you pay for - The hotel was fine for what was paid for , it’s a busy pub and nice restaurant and feels like the rooms are an after thought not really the focus of the business . The staff were polite , the area was nice with amenities nearby . I would stay again
- Verified traveler (4/5): Basic backstreet boozer. - The TV did not work and staff unable to fix.
The pub was very basic and did not sell real ale, so I watched TV in the pub without a drink! Rooms adequate but single bed very short for the taller person. Not much in the vicinity, unless you go into Stockton.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Room, kettle need cleaning . Get rid of flies in room
- Verified traveler (8/5): A good place to stay - This is above a pub 2 minutes from the station. Eaglescliffe is a nice place to stay though there isn't much around the station to look at. The hotel is a bit basic but clean and good value for money.
- JASON (2/5): - The electrics felt like i was going to rip them out of the wall as they were not secured in correctly.
there were huge cobwebs and dust gathered quite a few places.
The shower had a broken hose.
The flap to the chimney bangs every time it is slightly windy so don't bother getting any sleep!!
Where can i add photos?
- Verified traveler (4/5): Unpleasant - The cleaner clearly makes a superb effort to make a silk purse from a sow's ear. It was dusted and vacuumed BUT the place stank of cigarette smoke and felt very grubby. Even the key fob smelled.
The windows and sills needed attention, the shower needed a good mould spray and the entrance to the 'hotel' was miserable.
In the photographs I saw pleasant pine furniture and a bright white duvet cover. I got MDF type furniture and dark green sheets. It was very masculine circa 1970.
The ONLY light switch was a piece of grubby string, yeuk! A bedside lamp would have been useful as would some shower wash.
It costs very little money or effort to brighten up a dingy room to make it welcoming. This place missed the mark by a mile.
Never again.
- Anthony (10/5): The locomotive - Me and my partner stayed for the weekend and enjoyed the hotel which was very spacious and the bed was comfy. The food in the pub was also amazing and would definitely book again
- John (8/5): - Shower not working
- Nick (8/5): Solid comfy stay , could do with an update . - Lady doing check in was lovely , super friendly and helpful . Couple of issues resolved quickly after a few laughs . TV positioning and size bizarre . Would recommend displaying WIFI login details in the rooms in future . Room needs a bin , not just a bathroom bin . Good close parking, big spacious room with a nice comfy sofa . Lots of potential in room , but in need of updating .
- Adrian (2/5): - Ive stayed in some cheap hotels before. But this hotel is probably worst I’ve ever stayed in. There is too many bad things to list.
- Heleb (8/5): - Great having private access to the rooms, however the stairs are very steep. The room had everything I needed for my short stay but it does feel a little unloved.
I will be back.
- Benjamin (10/5): Nice hidden gem - The room was spatious, clean and had all the basic amenities. I was pleasantly surprised considering the price and I'd definately stay again when I'm in the area.
Food in the pub was also smashing, decently priced homemade food and you get a generous serving. Service was quick and staff friendly.
- Malcolm (8/5): - Very convenient for the station, basic but fine for my needs, just needed to get my head down ready for a meeting in the morning
- David (2/5): Disappointed - One of the worst places ive stayed, i waa looking for a base to work from when ive got jobs in the area.
Checking in was easy and so was the parking.
As soon as i went through the main door of the accommodation part i knew it was going to be bad.
No working tv.
Foisty smell.
Lights not working properly.
Very dated and dirty bed covers.
I ended up sleeping with my clothes on on top of the quilt.
There are much better places locally.
- Keith (8/5): Very nice location - Very nice location. Nice pub over the road as well as the location being a pub.
- Ewan (6/5): - Light in room not working, TV not working. No chair in room.
- John (8/5): Pet Friendly and Great Food - The hotel is connected to a pub/restaurant. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The food we had for dinner was excellent. We stayed here because we needed a dog friendly place to stay for the night and it was the closest to our meeting we had. The bed was super comfy the only problem was the bathroom and shower were unheated so it was very cold to go in there. But that being said we had a good night sleep and that is what we needed from our stay.
- Peter (10/5): Good food good value - Exellent value rooms, everything worked as it should.
Good pub with well cooked food not your usual chain fayre.
- Christopher (8/5): Good Hotel at a Great Price - Only stayed for one night on business. Everything was OK especially given the price in comparison to other local hotels. Would stay again if in the area.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Nice - Really nice staff and accommodation
- Miss R G (2/5): Poor - Left shortly after checking in as was so poor.
- MARIE LINE (6/5): I won't stay at that hotel anymore. - Bed sheeting and towels were not really clean. The street was noisy. Reception was closed at 7.00 am on Saturday morning when we left...
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Homely clean and incredible value. Room was very quiet and just a stones throw from the railway station. The pub is comfortable and the food was excellent.
- Nick (2/5): - Very nice pub but room was small, dingy and the heating was really high and couldn't be adjusted. For those on a really tight budget.
- Peter (8/5): Peter's Stay - I was made very welcome the room was spacious with good facilties and there was a good breakfast in the morning.
- Stephen (6/5): Party Time - Staff and pub were really lovely, room was fine but the bathroom was poor, in need of maintenance and freezing cold as it had no heating.
- Peter (10/5): Peter - Very friendly, comfortable room and a nice breakfast
- Peter (8/5): A good place to stay - I was made very welcome by friendly staff, the room was comfortable, quiet and clean and I had a nice breakfast in the morning
- Ian (2/5): Wouldn’t recommend to anyone horrible place - Terrible. Dirty, smelly . Rude staff very loud at night can hear everyone breathe in the other two rooms had to clean shower before using it mouldy silicon around shower base dust and dirt everywhere, dogey electrics
- Roderick (2/5): - Hotel closed when I arrived
- Michael (6/5): Cheap, basic, reasonable value - Very cheap, basic accommodation right next to the railway station, which was handy. Friendly staff. Room very basic, but adequate. Not the type of place you would bring a loved one for a romantic weekend away !!
- jamie (6/5): you get what you pay for - it was clean ish. Although the bedding has seen much better days. There was a television but no remote so useless there. There were also used razors left in the shower (not what i wanna see)
It was cheap and served its purpose but i doubt ill stay again
- Alastair (8/5): Decent little cheap and cheerful! - Friendly staff, excellent breakfast, right next to mini supermarket and two minutes to train station. Didn't hear any noise at night. It's not a fancy hotel, it's a few rooms above a pub- but I had nothing to complain about and did the job nicely.
- J W (8/5): Sportsman - I had understood breakfast was included, but it turns out they only provide this at the weekend.
- Cheryl (8/5): - Shower not good had to hold when having a shower and the shower head kept coming off.
- Ralph (8/5): - Poor central heating
- Richard (8/5): Lovely place, friendly and convenient - Couple staying for leisure, visiting family. Booked last minute and had to change our requirements when I got there with no problem whatsoever. Jo behind the bar was very helpful, very friendly and recommended a take away for delivery, introducing the local delicacy of Parmo (Parmesan) which was very nice ;)
Customers in the pub were also very friendly and chatty.
Lovely area for eating and drinking in Stockton - on - Tees.
- Malekeh (4/5): - People were nice but the hotel is closed in the morning until 12:30 so no breakfast. There is only a grocery store in the walking distance that is open in the morning. If one needs something before noon, its close to impossible to find the manager or anybody else. The week-end its better as they serve breakfast.
- Rob (6/5): Alright for the price - This hotel is a good place to stay if you are looking for a budget room when working in the area. The rooms are fairly spacious and relatively clean. The staff were helpful and friendly upon arrival and happy to assist with things during the stay. The whole place could probably do with a little modernization, but all in all, was alright for the price.
- Ian (8/5): Great location for train travel - Location and convenience and well looked after
- mark (8/5): nice stay at good price - It's called the sportsmans hotel but it's more like a pub with rooms to let above, still it was clean and landlord was friendly enough, would stay again.Didn't do breakfast but advertised to the regulars at the weekend which was slightly disappointing.
- Ralph (6/5): Functional pub B&B with great restaurant - It works. Just. If clean and safe at a good price is all you need then go ahead. The newly (?) refurbished Framboisette restaurant however is a delight. As a cook myself I know how they do it but there are some lovely dishes in here, emulating the offerings of high-end restaurants. Not expensive either.
- Dave (4/5): Not great at all - Drove down from inverness and wanted to lie down but was greeted with a door that had been badly repaired after being kicked, hairs on the pillow and a radiator on full in the middle of july. :(
Bedroom door had been kicked in at one point and badly repaired.
Single bed had long black hairs on the pillow.
Mattress was terrible and tiny
Radiator had no control, was on full in july!
Only one light switch for room and en suite.
No bedside lamp or table.
Teacup hadnt been washed.
Window didnt work properly.
- Dave (6/5): Overnight stopover - Hotel was booked as a stop over while going to croft motor circuit to watch BTCC racing. Room was inexpensive so wasn't going to be the Savoy. But the room was comfortable and very clean , the shower was ever red hot or cold , but did the job . There was no food as they were between cooks . But overall it did what was advertised and we would stay again if required. Two stars is about right.
- Adetunji (6/5): cheap and basic - Basic hotel, no bath soap some room for improvement.
- Verified traveler (2/5): NOT GOOD - NO power from 9pm, no hot water for a shower the next morning, would not stay again if they paid me! They called the office next day to say I wanted to stay another night, I did not say this as I was booked elsewhere tonight.
Not sure why they did this but lucky the office do not do this on their say so.
- Gordon (6/5): Warm - Room basic warm and clean small towels one not
- Verified traveler (2/5): Not having fun - Faulty lock on bedroom door. No towels provided. Toiletries consisted of three bottles of handwash. No chair in room. No control over heating from intside the room. Only one (broken) coathanger. TV works when you turn the shower on. Indifferent management. Nowhere to drop keys when leaving.
- Craig (2/5): Lazy Service - No towels. Dirty coffee cup had been left. No service of any kind. Cold room with radiator that couldn't be turned on. very poor effort by staff.
- shell (6/5): nice stay - Nice comfy bed very good company in the shower Borris the spider looked after us and helped by holding the soap in the shower thanks for a nice stay
