- Smith (9/5): Superb -
- Michelle (1/5): Would not recommend - When we arrived greeted by lovely lady who looked a little shocked and asked how long we were staying, as they were closing the day after for a refurbishment and boy does this place need it!
Room smelled of smoke, as underneath the window people went outside the pub to smoke and it all drifted into the room. Overspilling ashtrays on way in and out, dirty mirrors, floor and toilet. Entry was via a ropey metal fire escape. Left as soon as we could. The room and standards
- Gillian (8/5): Very good - The room was clean and tidy and had everything you need The outside was looking very tired and scruffy
- Mark (7/5): Good -
- Baleilomaloma (7/5): Good -
- David (7/5): Good stay.Nice clean accommodation and we both slept well and convenient parking at the pub - Good location Curtains wouldn’t close properly letting in the light early morning but I think I’m just being picky.Overall the accommodation was fine we had everything we needed to hand and the location was good,Shambles being an easy 15 to 20 minutes walk.
- Anonymous (3/5): Really disappointed - Nothing
But the bar lady was nice Walking up the fire escape to your room
Needs a full revamp
- Norton (10/5): Exceptional -
- Ciara (8/5): Very good -
- Zheng (2/5): So so - location and parking Too many
- Petruta (9/5): Superb - great people, not far away from town centre, and special because parking ,in town of York, can be stressful without a parking place
- Chantelle (8/5): Very good -
- Rod (4/5): A touch dissapointing - Staff were friendly although we didn't have a lot of interaction with them. On arrival and then getting a drink from the bar on our second night. We booked The Nags Head as it offered a room with a bath, upon requesting a bath we received an email from The Nags Head that they didn't have baths in the room. The booking was done via Booking.com so this needs to be corrected.
Room while on the smallish side was clean the bathroom.was tiny but functional. We stayed for 2 nights but the room was not serviced in between nights which included washing cups or changing towels.
- Stephen (9/5): Highly recommend. - The room
The staff
The location
Nearby shops and cafe
Regular bus services to city centre
- Teresa (5/5): Passable - Not much, the hot chocolate in room The only way to rooms was via outside stairs which were hazardous when carrying suitcases to room with no help from staff. Rooms were very small and although WiFi was available, did not reach the room. No meals were available and pub downstairs was not very inviting
- Stephen (6/5): Pleasant -
- Bryony (8/5): My stay - The room was clean. Good value for money. The internet didn't work part of the time we were there.
- Paul (3/5): Poor -
- Millie (9/5): Superb - Had a great stay here, room was just as shown and staff were lovely !
- Jackspencer90 (1/5): Poor management - Really close commute to the city centre Music and live singer on till after 11pm, whole riom ws vibrating an could not sleep.
Asked tbe Landlady to tunr it down so we could sleep but this wasnt done, whe my wife went down the landlady become obnoxios an said well we are a pub and its not loud. We even said we would leave there an then but was met with a rude remark of, you wont be getting a refund.
Room was cold, beds very uncomfortable.
- Samantha (10/5): Exceptional - Great stay very clean and modern
- Rebecca (8/5): Very good - Easy 20 minute walk to the city centre. Friendly staff.
- Wendy (2/5): Very poor - The location is great and near to the town centre. Comfy beds. Unfortunately, the twin room was very small. The shower door was only attached by one hinge and the extractor fan was broken. The grounds of the property were like a building site. There was no heating and our room was freezing. Dog excrement everywhere on the grounds. The property was very dated and not at all worth what we paid for our overnight stay.
- Trevor (7/5): Good value & good location for spending time in York. - Nice staff & good location.
Free parking which is great for York.
Easy walk to the city centre. A bit loud in the room above the karaoke! Not a complaint, just an observation. Stayed out later the next night….. 🤣
- Karl (7/5): Good -
- Dennis (10/5): A British Experience - The breakfast was very good. A great example of a British breakfast.
I especially liked the experience a real British Pub and neighborhood. The local Fish N' Chips - true British.
- Ashalina (9/5): Superb -
- Aaron (8/5): Very good -
- Tim (7/5): Good -
- Glenn (8/5): Very good -
- Shirley (8/5): Very good -
- Alan (4/5): Nags head has potential to be lovely not yet though - no breakfast due to kitchen not open No breakfast as landlady had just taken over waiting for refurbishment to take place pictures on booking .com on and relate to the property state its in now
- Sara (8/5): For the price, it's great! - The room was exactly what I expected & well worth the price: small, had everything I needed including a hair dryer, ironing board and iron, private bathroom & bed to sleep. It was perfect for my stay. I walked almost one mile to get to the city center which is an easy walk I enjoyed. There is a bar downstairs which can be a little loud sometimes but I liked it! If you have issues sleeping with noises, it's not the place for you but it's exactly what you would expect with the great low price! The stairs leading to the rooms are a fire escape. It is not the place for everyone but my room was great for solo travelers & the price matched with what I got & I had a great stay! It's also safe with a small grocery store nearby & a bar/restaurant right downstairs.
- Katherine (7/5): Fine for our stay. - Our room was cosy warm, it had a kettle, internet, a TV, a decent shower. It had two single beds which is important for us. The Nags Head is about a 20 to 25 minute walk from the centre of York and a 30 minute walk from the train station which was great as we were travelling by train. We stayed for a week and were out most of the day exploring.
We knew we were in and above a pub so expected noise. Sunday was karaoke night and that was so loud it could not understand the TV but the music stopped at 11.00 pm which was fair and respectful. We were lucky as the other rooms next to us were only occupied on the first night so no disturbances. The regular traffic outside the room did wake us. The room has a curtain with a gap which let in all the light in the early morning.
The room and outside areas need renovation, tidying and look tired. The lady owner is aware of this and on to it.
- Victoria (9/5): Superb -
- Tim (8/5): Very good -
- Campbell (7/5): Reasonably priced room for a single traveler. - It had a good shower. The room was clean and comfortable. It would have been nice to have had a fridge even just a mini one. Otherwise it was about what you would expect for the money.
- Linda (7/5): Good -
- Vanessa (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kaylee (8/5): Very good -
- Sharon (9/5): Lovely stay - Very friendly people and the room qas comfortable and clean Just the location would of liked to be nearer York centre but that was our fault
- Michael (6/5): Hardworking staff helped us to (almost) enjoy our stay - The staff were lovely and always very helpful. They did not supply food but were happy for us to bring takeaways in to eat in the bar where there was plenty of tv entertainment and we were able to sit and play cards etc. Parking was freely available and driving into the city was straightforward. We were told that the management had only been in charge for about 6 weeks and were working hard to get everything working well, but there was still some distance to go. We thought the booking would be bed and breakfast but no breakfast was available. Unfortunately in one of our rooms the heating was not working (not good in January). They tried to fix it but without luck so they kindly moved us to another (bigger) room. The selection of beers and wines in the bar was very limited, but facilities were fine. Once the managers have been in charge longer we are sure everything will improve.
- Leah (6/5): Pleasant -
- Stephen (7/5): Good - Lovely staff, room very clean and good onside parking close to the city. Room and shower room quite small and beds were small singles, please bear in mind we booked for the evening just hours before, so probably had the last room avaliable.
- Kirsten (6/5): Pleasant -
- Sedighi (1/5): Bad -
- Natalie (3/5): OK for one night only - The Nags Head is rather run down and many of the facilities are broken or in disrepair. Cosy, Clean linen.
- Kevin (7/5): Decent hotel with parking 15 minute walk from York centre. - Quiet no noise Nothing really
- B (8/5): Perfect for our overnight trip. - Staff friendly.
Rooms clean and cosy.
Beds comfortable
- Storie (7/5): Thanks for agreeing to ch - Convenient T.V too high
- Greg (1/5): Criminally bad. - Room only so no breakfast option. The location is up a dark, rickety, rusty outdoor fire escape next to the stinking smoking area at the back of a run down pub. Disgusting. Even if the room had been cleaned after the first night's stay (it wasn't touched), this has to be by far and away the most awful accommodation experience ever. Even the prostitute using one of the adjacent rooms sounded disappointed.
- Nicholas (8/5): Very good -
- Reed (8/5): Feeling hungry - This is the crunch point, going by your advert for this pub we we're expecting to get breakfast but this was not the case, we had to go to a cafe some distance away.not good. See above
- Kevin (5/5): Passable -
- Anthony (3/5): Appalling!!! - N/A Not safe, fire door not secure. External staircase unsafe.
Door to bathroom did not close. Left after 1 day refused to stay any longer.
- Jayne (10/5): Tina & her Extremely caring staff - What a lovely welcome from Tina. Her staff went way beyond expectations. Helping me & showing thoughtfulness & real care. I would definitely recommend the Nags Head & will be staying there again on my next visit to York. My room was lovely x exceptionally clean x New carpet x New bedding on a comfortable bed. Tina has not long taken over. She is doing her best to improve the accommodation room by room. They are having a full revamp in January to the whole premises. I hope this brings her & her wonderful staff a huge amount of customers & regulars to the Nags Head Some of the other guests were talk loud into the early hours.
Unfortunately some people are so inconsiderate. You can get that anywhere.
- Grace (8/5): Comfortable, welcoming stay. - Bed was comfortable. Had a tv that worked well. Modern furniture. Clean space. Extras provided, like shower gel, shampoo, biscuits and tea and coffee and kettle. Landlady was very welcoming and helpful, mentioned she only has had the property for a couple months, refurbishment is planned. Pub downstairs was lovely and not too noisy. Parking behind the pub is free and there are available spaces right next to the rooms. Location is alright. 30 min walk from city centre. Toilet door was sliding, bit annoying but manageable. Entry point to the rooms at present is through a fire exit type staircase. Walls are a little thin but all the residents were very respectful- not too noisy.
- Adam (10/5): Exceptional -
- Karen (9/5): Great stay, would recommend - Gemma and her mum were very welcoming, everything we needed was provided in the room, the beds and pillows were exceptionally comfortable.
- Adrian (9/5): Superb -
- Andrew (3/5): Not happy - Did not have breakfast Room had not been cleaned properly. Walls have stains on them and need decorating. Radiator and pipes were extremely noisy all night (air lock??). Toilet is almost under the sink, so not enough room in the shower room. Steep step into shower. Bed not comfy
- Boud (7/5): Good - Was very nice, would definitely recommend, the new owner has not long taken over and has a renovation planned. And is hoping to offer food in the future.
- Sian (8/5): Very good - Wonderful staff, clean and comfortable room.
- Mary (9/5): Excellent - The staff went out their way to help with anything, Tina was great, Nothing.
- Darren (7/5): Landlady only took over 2 weeks prior to our visit and she is aware of what is required. Both her and her daughter were - Excellent location and within walking distance of all that York has to offer Bathroom was a little tired but I am aware that landlady only took over property 2 weeks prior to our visit and I am sure that improvements will be made
- Jim (9/5): Superb -
- Stewart (9/5): Excellent trip - Great Accommodation in a quiet area of York. Just get out and walk. Plenty to do and see in York
- Daniel (9/5): Brilliant stay - Room very clean and very friendly staff and helpful was very nice stay N/a
- John (1/5): Avoid.Avoid Booking.com - When I left Rooms were filthy, upon arrival I was told the premises had closed the day before. We were told not to sleep on the pillows as they all needed changing, this never happened, the bar was closed, the kitchen was closed, there was excrement on the bathroom walls, the shower screen was full of mould, the bins weren’t emptied, the shower tap was full of brown grease, broken tiles in the shower, toilet roll holder off the wall and lying on the floor, pubic hair and urine stains on the seat. I paid £389.00 for 3 nights for 2 bedrooms, both bedrooms were in the same condition.
The day we arrived we were told the pub would be open the next day, so we gave them the opportunity as it was a new manager who unfortunately had this place dumped on her. The pub didn’t open so we decided to check out a day early.
I complained to Booking.com who liaised with the hotel and they offered me a pathetic £75 refund, this didn’t even cover the last nights stay which we never used.
- Zoe (9/5): Superb -
- Elzbieta (8/5): Very good -
- Denise (4/5): very disappointed would not stay again. - nothing not welcoming, had to go outside on the car park and up a dark wet metal fire escape to get to the room. not very appropriate when you have slight mobility issues and have to carry bags up there.
we had booked for two nights but left after the first night and found alternative accommodation
- Mandy (6/5): Pleasant - Enjoyed every minute in York.
- Kirsten (8/5): Very good -
- Robinson (8/5): Very good - Straight forward and left alone to enjoy your stay. Liked everything
- Alex (8/5): Very good - Nags head was quite reasonably priced, parking round the back saved some hassle, decent pub underneath if you like a pint, any noise from the pub did not affect our room. Good with dogs. Walk from here into York is not too bad. It’s a little rough around the edges but certainly does the job. They did have an early beer barrel delivery which was quite noisy but I found this an acceptable part of sleeping above a pub.
- Ian (1/5): Bad - Nothing No restaurant working, filthy dirty, linen and towels in a revolting state, used condoms under the bed. Shower so mouldy lumps fell off when you shut the door. Room stunk of stale smoke etc etc! Never been so where so awful!
- Peter (6/5): Pleasant -
- Francis (7/5): Good -
- Tamzin (7/5): Good - The staff were really lovely! It was nice to have the bar downstairs for an end of evening drink! 20/30 minute walk from the city centre. Peaceful and quiet surrounding area. Car park was basically empty the whole time we were there, and we were allowed to leave it there even after we had checked out! The stairs up to the rooms were outside and a bit rickety at times, so anyone with mobility issues may struggle! Rooms could use a bit of an upgrade, and it's a shame they don't do breakfasts anymore. The shower pressure wasn't great. Rooms appeared clean but did notice the occasional spots that could have used a bit more TLC. I'm not going to lie, I expected a bit more for the price but maybe it's more expensive than I'm used to since it's near the city.
- Adele (10/5): welcoming and friendly pub - it's a nice welcoming pub the staff and locals was welcoming. and if your stopping for a short stay it's ideal. the room was cold and couldn't see where u could warm the room up so I just wrapped myself in bed.
- Mickovski (5/5): Passable -
- David (6/5): Pleasant -
- Smith (7/5): Great stay, just a few minor problems. I would definitely stay again - I liked the style of the room and how it looked. The pub was great at the end of our evening for an end of night drink. The beds were comfy and the room was clean. We had plenty of refreshments. The shower didn’t drain properly when showering. We only had 2 bottles of conditioner and one soap bar. The stairs leading to the room was a bit slippy and felt unstable. However this is most likely due to the rain.
- Heathershaw (5/5): Passable -
- Alan (8/5): Very good - Friendly and clean
- Cameron (6/5): Pleasant - Great location and friendly staff. Nice pub. Value for money. Easy parking. Carpet could do with a clean otherwise good.
- Billy (9/5): Superb -
- Redshaw (4/5): Disappointing - Shower was not clean and did not drain properly also disco very noisy going on until 11:20pm kept us awake
- Jack (10/5): Exceptional -
- Vince (8/5): Very good -
- Kenneth (3/5): Poor - Location was good and free car park Entry to our room was via exterior steps/ fire escape On leaving had to go round to front and knock to return our room key at 9.30am landlady appeared still night her pyjamas
- Claire (8/5): We literally needed an overnight stay for 5 of us for my sons graduation. The host was very welcoming and let us use th - The rooms were exactly as shown on the website, clean and well equipped. Beds were very comfortable, we all had a good night sleep The outside appearance of the property was not as nice as the rooms
- James (5/5): Poor for the price - We were allowed to check in early which really helped as we were off to the races the same day. The price of the hotel for what you actually get is really disappointing. If this was around 65/70£ a night I wouldn't have bothered complaining as you pay for what you get but for this to be £140 for 1 night is pretty poor. Room wasn't in great nick at all, multiple things broken, carpets looked tired, floorboards creaky, shower virtually dripped out. Just really not what you expect for the price!
- Lei (9/5): Superb -
- Laura (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jade (7/5): You pay for what you get - Very close to the town. Size of the room compared to the online photos was deceiving. Shower door broken, bathroom door not properly secured at the bottom and no air-conditioning in the room. Also broken drain cover directly outside the window, which in the morning was very evident. Complimentary toiletries, most bottles were empty on arrival.
