- Zschocke (5/5): - The room was very clean and there were towels provided, the shower and toilet get cleaned every day. The common area was comfortable with a fridge, microwave and toasting oven available. Our bed was also comfortable and we had big windows that let in lots of light.
There was also an elevator, which was convenient because we were living on the 5th floor.
When contacting the staff on booking.com, they replied very fast and were there to help with problems.
The building also has a rooftop terrace where we could hang our washing and overlook the city.
A convenience store and a supermarket were very close by and the walk to the next station was relatively short. There was an additional staying fee to pay when we arrived, which wasn't mentioned when booking the accommodation. The washing mashine doesn't cost much but unfortunately it didn't clean our clothes well.
It's not soundproof at all, you can hear everything that happens in the common room and also from the other rooms. And when the light is on in the common room, it lights up the room as well because of windows in the door.
You need to get lucky with the neighbours, unfortunately ours were a bit rude and talked loudly at night.
There was only 1 toilet and 1 shower shared by 5 rooms, which was tricky to manage. The stove on the 5th floor doesn't work, so cooking is only possible on the 4th floor.
It is a cheap option in Kyoto, but be prepared for the points mentioned above.
Overall it's an okay stay if you're alright with sharing a living space with strangers and don't have high standards.

- Corrie (8/5): - The property was clean and had full use of a shared kitchen and fridge space. The property also has a washing machine you can use for a fee There was only 1 bathroom and shower for at least 6 people which is not very practical. The accommodation is very basic for the price.

- E. (9/5): Staff and place itself is exceptional. Location is inconvenient, but doable. - The staff are very helpful and nice. They even gave us a little tour of the place. The rooms are also more spacious than expected and the whole place was quite clean! The common areas are also well equipped for anything that you may need. The location is a bit far from the main touristy areas of Kyoto. In addition, it’s also a bit far from public transportation in general. Transportation costs may add up as you take more buses and trains to go back and forth.

- Wiliana (10/5): we satisfy with the facility, staff response on our problem was fast and applicable - The location is pretty much OK, 10 minutes walk to bentencho station was not bad,.. but were traveling with erdely on wheelchair so. distance to the nearest station
- Rhiannon (10/5): Exceptional - Very friendly and accommodating host!
- Mario (5/5): Average but cheap place - The restaurant 10 mins away by to the hotel Location quite far but quiet. Receptionist not present at the reception. Bed not comfortable
- Laura (8/5): Very good -
- Jessica (5/5): Passable -
- Jiardini (10/5): I was pleasantly surprised to enjoy my stay here after seeing the lower rating of this accomodation. - There was a kitchen where you could cook food, use microwave, fridge, boil water in electric kettle, etc. My room was a good size, but then it was a family room. Also, the property was close to some bike paths near a river. You could rent a bike there Couldn't get warm water in shower until final morning, but cold shower was rejuvenating. Had to share toilet and shower with other guests.
- Maurits (1/5): Bad -
- Wachiravit (8/5): Very good -
- Olavs (10/5): Exceptional - Everything was great, staff - awesome, room clean, common space - clean, instructions clear. The neighbourhood, there wasn't much of interest, but a different experience of Japan...
For visiting Imperial Villa or catching breath before/after Kyoto - great stay, not sure what else to see around for Internationals
- Nicholas (8/5): Great Budget Accommodation In Japan. Super Staff. All Facilities Available -
- Howell (10/5): mama is the best! - the area - really close to a lot of the nature side of things i was looking to experience while in kyoto its just a little outside of the city but that was cool to experience
- Nowshin (6/5): Pleasant -
- Monica (9/5): Simple and basic hostel. Great value. - It’s a perfect little hostel-like hotel in Kyoto. I only spent time there to sleep and was out exploring the rest. The staff were very friendly. It was very cold and I couldn’t figure out how to heat the room. But the blankets were so cozy that I was still warm all night. I didn’t bother asking for help because I wasn’t there much.
- Anonymous (10/5): nice so gooooood!!!! thanks! - I can visit so easy this hotel ,because near Kamikatsura Station and can laundry my clothes.
All room are very clean. nothing. all great.
- Conrad (10/5): Exceptional -
- Angela (9/5): Superb -
- Le (3/5): Poor -
- Sukanya (4/5): Disappointing -
- Teaman (7/5): Clean affordable place far from major sites and an annoying check-in snafu. - Location is OK. Nice view. I might have done better with using a bus app (which I never had time to see if it even exists) but I mostly needed to get to Kawaramachi/Shijo area, so I walked the 20 minutes to the Hankyuu train station to get to the central part. Very clean and although several people shared the floor I was on with one bathroom, shower room and kitchen, I never had to wait to do anything I wanted. Spacious room with comfortable large bed. I arrived exactly at 4:00 p.m. as I told them I would but nobody was there. I made myself comfortable and logged into the wifi which was prominently displayed. I caught up on some e-mail and other work but really could have used my time better because I had other things to do in Kyoto. Finally after 45 minutes I found the phone number from my e-mail and called somebody who was very apologetic, but it still took another 15 minutes for somebody to get there and check me in. They put me in a room, but then quickly asked if I'd like to go to the 4th floor and I assumed it was an upgrade because I had to wait so long. It was fine. Although not directly above the major city street below, the double glass doors kept the noise quite low. The second room also had a very strong fragrance while the first room had none. I was inclined to ask to go back since a find fragrances really affect me a lot but decided against it due to time constraints. I lost an hour waiting, but the stay was comfortable and uneventful otherwise.
- Joanne (9/5): Great hotel for good price - Great location near station and restaurants, spacious room, tourist info available at reception
- Zac (8/5): Very good -
- Maiuri (10/5): Exceptional - Everything Nothing
- Shaun (8/5): Very good -
- Mia (7/5): Good -
- Cornell (10/5): Great stay at a great place with wonderful staff! - Bra personal, bra faciliteter och fräscht rum!
- Doan (7/5): good stay at this prices. - good stay with acceptable prices. Staff is so nice. A little far from Kyoto station. And bus fare is not included in Kyoto bus 1 day pass.
- Roser (3/5): I would not recommend. Too expensive and not worth it at all - it was clean and spacious location, they also make you pay tons of money extra outside of what you have already paid online (basically a scam)
- Franzi (8/5): comfortable accommodation within every direction of Kyotos most sightseeings. - The house had everything you need, a rooftop in the morning to enjoy the sun. The location is well located, close to bamboo forest. The smell of the kitchen is really bad.
- Carol (10/5): Exceptional -
- Terence (8/5): Very good -
- Ole (7/5): It's a very simple hotel, but very good value for money. And perfect location for the marathon! - DIdn't know about the breakfast (which was oK, since I brought my own). Wa it served at the 3rd or 4th floor? I was a t the 5th. The pillow in my room (506, I think( was really uncomfortable. Way too hard and bulky. Please consider to change with a "normal" hotel pillow, so that guest can chose which one to use.
- Dornatum (1/5): Bad -
- Lærke (6/5): Rent, men dyrt i for pengene.
- Tom (6/5): Expensive, poorly located hostel - This is a hostel, not a hotel. It has limited shared bathrooms and kitchens, the walls are paper thin and it is expensive for what it offers. It is clean and there was a well meaning, helpful manager.
- David (10/5): Nice clean hotel, very friendly - Great hotel, very clean and friendly. 5min walk to the station and close to a grocery store. Restaurant on the first floor which had some really tasty food!. Plus you get a discount as a guest. Highly recommend staying here.
- Rachel (10/5): Great guest house! - This family-run guest house is very clean, comfortable and in a good neighborhood. No, it is not located in the tourist area but if you're in any decent shape, walking 20 mins to the subway isn't a big deal for a cheaper accommodation. There is a grocery store nearby, and guests have access to the kitchen. We would definitely stay again on our next trip to Kyoto.
- Patrick (6/5): - Logement ok mais localisation pas idéale
- Verified traveler (8/5): Satisfied - Very friendly host.Clean room and comfortable bed.Free hot shower, shampoo and hair dryer. Convenient kitchen and fridge. You can find the grocery store on foot.I stayed with my family and we are satisfied with this guest house. You
may enjoy the communication with the guests from other countries.
- Peter (8/5): Biking in Kyoto - The only problems i have with this hotel is that a hot shower costs money each time you use it and then that the hotel is situated quite far from the central station. Otherwise the staff was helpful and spoke english pretty well and the hotel rented bikes which is a must in Kyoto
- Verified traveler (8/5): - For those back pack people, It's safe and clean room.
- Tuan (6/5): - First up it's far from central Kyoto. The nearest subway is about a mile away and then you still need to change 2 more different trains before you can get to Kyoto station. However, from the nearby subway you can get to Arashiyama in about 2 stops on the same train. Also, there's a bus stop about 50 yards away from the hotel (bus 73) that can take you to and from Kyoto station in about 40 minutes depends on traffic. This hotel is weird. You have to clean after yourself. There's no room service. You have to put down a deposit of 10000 yens for the room (not the key) in case you forgot to take out the trash or something like that. You need to pay 100 yens for the hot water you're going to use. I wonder if they ever clean the room before renting it out to the next guest(s). It's on a busy street so it is noisy. If you can afford it stay some where nearer to central Kyoto instead of wasting time on a bus or a train.
- Martine (8/5): Nice and clean, very friendly - I spent one week at this hotel at the end of July, and overall it was satisfactory. The reason I am not giving it a 5 star rating is because of the location (it is about a 30 to 40 minutes bus ride from the station, depending on traffic, although the bus stop is right by the hotel), the fact that the mattress tends to be pretty thin and you feel like you're sleeping directly on the frame of the bed, the pillow is pretty flat, and there is a 100 yen fee per shower; I do believe that the shower price should be included with the room. Otherwise, it is very nice and clean. The common kitchen allows you to meet and hang out with your fellow travelers, and after a long day sightseeing, it feels really great to be able to exchange impressions and tips. There is a Chinese restaurant on the first floor where guests get 10% off, and the food is good. There are also two supermarkets nearby, one of them opened all night and the other one providing more prepared meals. Overall, I would recommend it if you don't mind the distance to the station.
- James (4/5): Decent - Overall, our stay at the Kamikatsura House was only ok. It was very cold when we were there and the AC was not working, so it was very cold in the room. The walls are very thin so if you have loud neighbors, you will hear them. However, we didn't spend very much time here during the day and it met our needs. The staff was willing to help when we had questions. The hotel is very far from Kyoto Station - about a 40 minute bus ride, but there is a station right outside the hotel. I personally think I it is a little overpriced for what they offer, but overall it was fine.
