- Stephen (9/5): - I seldom write reviews, and this one is not to criticise but to inform potential guests and, hopefully, the hotel. My wife is recovering from a road accident so we booked here specifically because the hotel has a lift. However, the hotel is in 2 parts, either side of an entrance arch, and the lift serves one side only. On arrival we found our allocated room was on the first floor of the side without a lift. We were immediately offered an alternative on the other side, but it was on the front of the hotel overlooking a busy road. My wife decided she could manage the stairs, and indeed she did. We enjoyed the stay very much, but if a lift is critical to you then you need to point this out with a request during booking and the hotel could make this clearer in their information.

- Marleen (10/5): Superb <3 - We had a superb stay at Poets House. I genuinely can't find a single negative thing to say about the place. We had a beautiful large room, quiet, comfortable and with an amazing view on Ely Cathedral. Everything we needed was present in the room: slippers, towels, toiletteries, tea and coffee, biscuits... The hotel is at a few minutes walk from the railway station, the Cathedral and the High Street with plenty of shops and restaurants nearby. We enjoyed the breakfast in the room, and it was amazing! Dinner was excellent as well. Staff were friendly and helpful.

Towelling robes and slippers. Small bottles of shampoos etc. Plenty of good quality towels. Close to shops and catheral. Breakfast was superb perfect. Staff friendly.

Beautiful room Please can you put magnifying mirrors in the rooms for makeup and shaving. So many hotels don’t do this and it is an essential for most women.

The room was so big that it was difficult for the heating in the room to actually warm it up to a decemt temperature. Also, the only other comment was some of the staff were a little unfriendly, however still professional.

The bathroom was very large and well equipped with a large walk in shower and separate bath. Very nice. The restaurant was excellent and service very good. A nice, spacious and comfortable modern bar area was also enjoyable. The hotel location was very convenient, just on the edge of the main shops so everything was in easy reach. Ideally situated in the historic part for visit to the cathedral and Oliver Cromwell's house. The room overlooked a main road so there was some traffic noise but late at night this wasn't a problem. The wonderful view across the green towards the cathedral more than compensated for slight traffic noise.

The location was also brilliant, right in the middle of town. Easy to access everything. The room was quiet and good for someone with children. The hot water for the shower was lukewarm, at best. The duvet was coming out the covers and was far too large for the bed. The room seemed a little basic for a suite, we were expecting a little more flourish.

- Ruth (7/5): Overpriced but ok. - The room was good, decor not to our taste but clean and functional. The bathroom was very spacious with a great shower and an unusual bath. They accommodated our bed requirements. It was warm in the room - which was good on a cold spell in January. They were able to serve breakfast in our room. The parking is a bit of a pain, a good 5 min walk to the parking area, when we had a fair amount to unload because we'd brought stuff for our son - it wasn't great. Reception staff did all we asked and were polite but quite unfriendly. The reason we won't be returning is the cost of the food. £19 each for a small continental breakfast in our room was expensive. The evening meal similarly, whilst the food was ok it wasn't worth it for 2 courses. In other words 2 mornings breakfasts and one dinner came to £174 over the cost of the room. In my head that adds nearly £200 to our bill.

- Elaine (9/5): A beautiful hotel offering a very special experience. - Beautiful room, well decorated, tasteful and very spacious. The staff were all delightful, respectful and knew their jobs. There was no mirror near to the sockets and dressing table so no-where to do hair/makeup…could easily be rectified by putting a mirror on the dressing table. Sofa was at right angles to the tv so not ideal to snuggle up to watch but there was enough room for us to move the sofa. Lovely big shower but using the shower from the hose, as opposed to the rainwater shower, caused a leak through the door and hinges. Meal was lovely - a special new year party meal and great to see a nice veggie option however was all quite carb heavy and the veg all sautéed…I like fresh veg. I was also surprised for a hotel offering the quality and price, not to have a mini-fridge in the room.

We were able to park our vehicle in the hotel courtyard that was very helpful as my husband has a mobility problem. The room was clean, spacious and comfortable. Staff are kind and helpful. There is nothing we did not like about Poets House. Nothing.

- Teresa (10/5): Excellent short break in the town of Ely with everything walkable from the hotel - Very friendly welcome and early check in which is always a good thing. The room was well equipped with toiletries and tea making facilities. The Bar area was a very nice place to get a drink and a small snack especially if you are meeting friends. The restaurant had a relaxed friendly atmosphere with excellent staff and good food. Breakfast was a mix of buffet and a choice of cooked food. All of which was very good. Although they offer parking it is a five minute drive away and walk back One can drop off bags at the hotel though . Parking is behind a gate in a main town car park.

- Alan (9/5): Perfect for what we wanted. Ely is a lovely town and convenient for sightseeing further afield - Comfort, style and location. You can park for loading/unloading but overnight parking is 5 minutes walk but it IS free and secure. Also, while rooms at the front have a view of the cathedral it also directly fronts the main road - we changed to a garden view room so we could open the windows without any noise intrusion

Loved location Very nice dinner in restaurant Very attentive waiter Nice room beauty products No coffee machine in room No fridge Went to have a bath and found moisturiser had nearly run out (I had to go and ask for more - which was rectified quickly but shouldn’t have happened) Tissue box had one tissue! Continental breakfast a bit lacking - but we were there at opening so perhaps it improved?

- Helen (8/5): An excellent location in a stylish hotel with first-rate staff. Would definitely book again - The atmosphere was excellent, an old hotel brought stylishly up-to-date. The food was very good indeed and the staff excellent- professional but welcoming and friendly- the perfect combination. Nothing was too much trouble. Lighting in the bathroom and bedroom made doing hair and make up not so easy.

Loved the copper bath although no opportunity to use it because of the heatwave! Front of house senior staff are excellent. Nice quiet and picturesque garden for drinks/dinner. The hotel furnishings felt quite tired and in need of a spruce up. In our room, the safe didn't work, the curtains were hanging off the rails/rings, free water was limited, clothes hangers were all for skirts, and a slightly odd choice of shower gel (strong whisky scent!). Service was sometimes lacking in attentiveness and younger staff members slightly clumsy with serving drinks (very common everywhere now where drinks are served in a way that spills them, and often no offer to replace or clean up the spill). But everyone was very friendly so I think this is more about better training for staff.

- Jackie (9/5): Upmarket stay in pretty hotel - Location , room size , bathroom , easy check in . Noisy beer garden which was still noisy at midnight . To be fair it was a busy event at the cathedral so not surprising Otherwise everything was excellent
- Manuela (7/5): Quaint hotel - The room was spacious and comfortable.Breakfast was nice. It had a good selection. Bathroom was very spacious and lovely. I really liked that it is a small hotel. Feels intimate. Room was a bit stuffy. I thought for the room rate Breakfast could have been included.
