- francesca (9/5): -
- Nicola (10/5): Lovely hosts, very easy and convenient. Great location - Location was great. No breakfast included but plenty of options nearby! Shower could have been better, hard to get a temperature that wasnt either freezing or scorching!
- Pav&Rav (8/5): Was Ok considering the price should cover car space - Near to the city centre All the extensions lead should be more modern and have usb plugs
- Sophie (9/5): -
- Agnieszka (9/5): Świetna przygoda. - Blisko centrum. Czysto.
Celkově jsme byli moc spokojeni a panu majitelovi - Skvělá lokalita, veškeré vybavení a čistota.
- Mateusz (10/5): Awesome place to stay! - Really great place to stay! Everything was perfect starting from super clean rooms to very helpful and cheerful host Richard😄! Localisation is also really good, about 1 minute walk to bus stop and 2/3 minutes to second bus stop and tram stop. I recommend it to everyone! Nothing.
- Lenka (10/5): -
- Maija Baumane (9/5): -
- Jeffrey (10/5): - The room was very clean, host was extremely friendly, and the location was within walking distance to most all tourist spots in the city.
- Simon (2/5): Damp and over priced! - Room smells of damp - there’s a reason why there’s a dehumidifier plugged in 24/7. Room and bathroom need updating with mould on the tile grout. Shower is very tight - curtain smelling of damp. Only one small liquid soap for two of us over a three night stay. Unable to open the window and loads of electric adapters and wires plugged in. Room was cold as it’s below ground and the plug in heater was no good. Richard is friendly and responsive but £266 per night in August is rip off Britain at its worst…we know it’s the Fringe but not value for money given the state of the room. Avoid.
- Leyla (10/5): A great stay! - I had a really long weekend nice stay at Lantern Guesthouse! As a solo traveler, room 3 was big enough for me. The room was VERY clean and had everything I needed. The mattress was a bit hard for my liking and there was a dip on one side, but I was able to move over and sleep on the other side. Yes the room was a bit damp but that's just the reality of Scotland - there was a dehumidifier in the room and a heater that cut down the humidity level pretty quickly so I wasn't bothered. A note for other North American travelers: position the shower heater to about 9 o'clock for the perfect temperature!
Lantern is conveniently located near multiple bus stops so it was very easy to get around. There were also great restaurants, pubs, and bars in the area.
I'd definitely stay here again!
- Sarah (10/5): - We greatly enjoyed our stay at lantern guest house. The hosts were very kind and gave us some guide pamphlets to help us find our way around the city. The location was convenient and very walkable! Thank you so much for the lovely stay!
- Mark (6/5): - Our host Richard was very welcoming and very helpful. The location was superb and it was quiet. Our room downstairs was somewhat lacking fresh air, very small for our luggage and damp. Otherwise a lovely stay.
- Jennifer (10/5): - Lovely convenient location. Room had everything we needed.
- Magdalena (9/5): Short break in Edinburgh - Location is prime. Walking distance from the station and to lots of attractions. Richard was a great host. We arrived outside the standard check-in time and were able to get in with the PIN code. When we reported issues with a shower, they were attended to and resolved quickly. Internet connection could have been better (building has thick walls and rooms are in the basement) and holding online calls was problematic.
Room 3 is not a big room but you come to Edinburgh to explore the city and not to spend time inside.
Bed with two mattresses one on top of another was unusual.
- Proudley (10/5): Exceptional -
- Julie (9/5): Enjoyed our stay - Loved the location. Friendly welcome. Nice touch to provide fresh milk. Bed was very comfy and we both had great sleep. Lovely hot shower. Lighting was good for reading. Room nice and warm with 2 radiators and an extra fan heater if required. Peaceful location. WiFi good. Good that there were umbrellas to borrow and noted a luggage scale which would be useful to others. Maps and guides of Edinburgh plentiful. These are minor for us. Dusty around mirror, floor and surfaces. Bathroom tile grouting needs a refresh.. Outside steps down to flat were steep, though we expected that as was mentioned in previous comments. Had to use a torch to key in the code outside as outside light didn't provide enough light to do it.
- Janice (5/5): Good location. Fair facility - Central. Close to buses, restaurants etc Room was too cramped. Stayed for 3 nights, and no housekeeping-trash was left in bins. Hand towel and bathmat were not changed, resulting in a damp bathroom
- Agnieszka (8/5): Definitely am recommending. - Very good localization. And very helpful host. We were in October when it’s already cold outside. And it was also cold inside during night. We had heater and additional duvet which made the night bearable.
- Billy (10/5): - The place was lovely, bed was comfortable and the room was just nice to be at! Richard was great in communicating with us, and was very friendly and thoughtful. :)
- Leigh (9/5): Superb -
- Mary (9/5): Loved being so close to St James Quarter and Princes Street - No breakfast but a lovely brunch place nearby. The floor was very cold. I forgot to bring slippers.
- Steve (8/5): Very good -
- Martin (8/5): Stay again no probs friendly people nothing too much trouble. Martin - Great location. Lovely room very quiet easy access to City clean room and man was very friendly shook hands on arrival and leaving and was very helpful when i forgot my room number he txt me within 5 mins. New number to leave baggage in hall for late leave home from station. Came to say goodbye and sorted taxi to station cos of amount we had bought. Would book again next year when going to tattoo. Friendly hosts always there when needed. Quiet compact room we both loved it Could do with leaving some cutelry in hallway to use at night when returning to room either disposable or washable. In my case i would always wash and put back. Also glasses left for guests but no large glasses for a beer in room before bed which i would wash and put back. " small niggles but just my view and a few more coffee sachets left in hall as i only drink coffee with brown sugar. Great fridge with fresh milk every day. Do not please let my personal views put you off from staying as i would book again no problems. Look forward to seeing you again next year and keep building the business up you will get there i am sure. Martin and Kim
- Mary (4/5): - The location of the property was fantastic. Close to town, shops, restaurants, and tourist locations.
The owner represented the property accordingly in photos and did say it was a basement unit. Unfortunately, the room was extremely small with no room for luggage. Very musty smell and bathroom had mold on ceiling and tiles in shower. The comforter was not even long enough to reach to the bottom of the top mattress. Luckily, there was a wool blanket in the cabinet. A proper size comforter would be helpful.
Taylor Swift had just left town and I feel that the price of the room was very overpriced for the first two days we were there.

With a little more attention to detail, this location could be a great spot for a stay.
- Iurii (8/5): Very good - Small room just 5 minutes away from St. James Quarter A little dark, a little wet, a little cold. All that one would expect from Scotland.
- Cumhur (4/5): Bedbugs - It is an OK room at an OK location. Richard was very nice to us. There is a heater for when it gets cold (and it does, actually). The room had bedbugs, we literally saw them and got bitten by them. That ruined our whole trip.
- makini (8/5): - While I liked a lot about the property, one thing that not enough hotels and guest stays offer is multiple outlets/surge protectors. At Guest Lantern there were at least four surge protectors in my room. It seems like a small thing but it matters and made my stay easier. Of note, the upstairs family has young kiddos who run/jump ~7-9am, so holiday sleep ins aren't possible, if that's something you're into.
- Tim (10/5): - Unique place.
- Carolyn (10/5): - Quiet and cozy place to stay near the city center of Edinburgh. Walkable from Waverly Station. Friendly and personable proprietors! We enjoyed our stay.
- Mireille (9/5): Superb -
- Thieme (9/5): Superb -
- Lev (7/5): Все - Все Всё
- Beata (8/5): Excellent location - The landlord Richard was nice and discrete. It was nice stay at Lantern Guest House.
- Robert (10/5): Great Place and Great Location - Clean, comfortable, and spacious room. Great location as well. Right around the corner are many restaurants and cafes. Every morning I went to KUNA for excellent coffee and savory pastries. They also have sweets. The one thing you should know about the room is that the steps leading down to the room are steep.
- Christopher (10/5): While the location was small that did not matter to my fiancée and I. We really just needed a bed to fall in after a lon - It was right in New Town, but off the beaten trail. It was a little small.
- Federica (10/5): Exceptional - Richard was so kind and caring. He waited for us (our flight was late), and he lent the adaptor (we forgot it!). The position is great, just 15 min walk from the city centre (but if you don't feel like walking you can always catch the bus on the other side of the main street!).
- Antonia (8/5): Very good - Great location, cosy room, good service
Nice host
- George (10/5): Exceptional - Great place,and central.
- Mariya (10/5): - Really enjoyed our 3 nights stay in the Lantern Guest House. Accommodation is very centrally located within walking distances to main attractions (25-30 mins) and with plenty of dining options around it. Hosts were very responsive and provided all required information for check in. Room was clean and had everything we need for short stay.
- Steven (8/5): Very good -
- Angeline (7/5): Good -
- Holly (10/5): Great Stay - You'll like this one! - We loved our stay at the Lantern Inn Guest House! It was only 10 minutes from the bus station and 12 from Waverly Railway station, without a bunch of confusing turns. There are many places to eat within a block, and we found a 'favorite restaurant': Mama Roma. The room was so nice, clean, and roomy; and we loved the ensuite bathroom. We were very comfortable there. A small refrigerator was dedicated to our use, with cold water and milk supplied! There was a microwave available and even some dishes we could use. We didn't have those any other place we stayed so it was a great surprise.
Richard, our host, was very friendly and anxious to help us. He gave good instructions and always seemed to be around when we had a question. We stayed 4 nights and would have been happy to be there longer if our plans had allowed.
With such a good price, great features, comfortable room, and convenient location, we couldn't have done any better. I would definitely choose Lantern Guest House again if I return to Edinburgh.
- Jenny (9/5): Superb - Richard is a great host and the room is really cute. It is located quite close to the centre, so that all the main attractions can easily be reached by foot.
- Kyle (8/5): Very basic accomodation but great location in New Town right near Leith walk and many other sights. - Great location, easy check-in, easy access. Very friendly host. The bathroom was a bit small and needed some maintenance (for example the sink drain was very slow). Also, it was raining for part of our stay and you could tell that the room stayed very moist inside as a result (windows foggy, towels not dry), but perhaps this is not uncommon for Scotland. Last thing is that there was a fair bit of noise thru the ceiling from people (mainly kids) upstairs.
- Chris (8/5): Very good -
- David (10/5): - The Lantern Guest House is a short walk from the main attractions of Edinburgh and very convenient! Also, the rooms are very clean and the owner is super helpful! i will definitely stay at the Lantern Guest House when i return to Edinburgh and I strongly recommend it to anyone visiting Edinburgh!!!
- kathy (10/5): - This is a rowhouse type of housintypical of the city.our room was small with a bath..truth is we were gone q2 hours a day. Bus at corner could walk to old town and lots of little restaurants around fit the bill for us..clean and well located and safe neighorhood
- Matthew (8/5): Very good -
- Ms. (6/5): Pleasant -
- ALEXANDRA (8/5): - A great location, the room was nice and came with a fridge. The host was also responsive and helpful. The only thing I didn't love was that since the room was in a "basement" it did smell a little damp.
- Ellen (8/5): Very good - Clean, nice good value. Fire escape information
- Juneja (8/5): Very good -
- Brian (10/5): Exceptional - Richard was a gracious and helpful host.
Highly recommend.
- Ursula (8/5): Just what we were looking for. - Fridge and microwave were useful enabling us to sort our own breakfast. Can't complain about anything at this price.
- Michael (8/5): - The staff was friendly. The shower was small, making it difficult to shave my legs
- Ramiro (10/5): I would stay here again - Great location, and very helpful host.
- Sarah (10/5): Exceptional -
- Giulia (8/5): Lovely experience - Nice position, 10/15min walking from the city centre, in a really quiet area. Richard has been very nice. The room a bit too small.
- Cheryl (10/5): Exceptional -
- Erin (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sara (10/5): Exceptional -
- Usagipl (8/5): Nice room in great location - The host was really nice. The location was great, close to bus stops and easy for moving around the city. The bed was comfortable. The room was in the basement but it didn't bother us, the street is quiet so it's not a problem. WiFi worked great. We were visiting in September and it was getting cold at evenings. The bathroom weren't well ventilated and damp air moved to the room as well. There was a small heater provided, but it was a little help. I'm sure in warmer time it won't be a problem. We also felt a little uncomfortable with host cleaning cups and towels in our room every day - it would be nice to have some plate to hang on the doors that we don't want it/need it.
- Sveta (9/5): Superb - The room is cozy. The host was super friendly and was there to welcome us. The location is great too, it's a quiet neighborhood but only 15-20 minutes by foot from the Royal Mile
- Willem-pieter (9/5): Good place to stay for a trip to Edinburgh 😉 - Nice rooms on a good walking location in town. The owner was very friendly and helpful. On the day we left we could store our luggage during day before traveling to the airport. Shower space is a bit tiny, but most important it was clean.
- Sum (8/5): Good location to attractions and very nice house holder - Good location to attractions
- Robert (10/5): - Secure, quiet, well located, owners trusted us to just get on with things, and are ever just a phone message away.
- Kevin (8/5): A nice place from which to explore Edinburgh. - The Lantern House is well located. It was interesting that the Ukranian consulate was across the street (which was informally renamed Volodymyr Zelensky street). The room is comfortable and cozy, although the bathroom (shower) is rather small. We appreciated the small fridge with fresh milk. This was not a huge problem for us, but I can imagine that slightly more elderly clients should be forewarned about the need to descend a concrete stairway to access the rooms. This could especially be a problem in poor weather or if burdened with heavy baggage.
- Oana (10/5): Exceptional -
- Alan (10/5): Exceptional -
- Carlotta (9/5): Superb - Our room was really nice and comfortable. Although the guest house is close to the city centre and to many pubs and restaurants, it is in a very quiet street. The bathroom is tiny.
- Matthew (10/5): Will happily return! - What a fantastic place to stay. Brilliant location, barely 10 minutes walk from Waverley station and virtually right on the doorstep for the Playhouse and countless bars and restaurants, yet blissfully quiet in the evening. Easy access with a door code to come and go as you please and undoubtedly the most comfortable hotel bed I've ever slept in! Only spoke briefly with Richard after he came out of his way to see if we were enjoying our stay, but clearly nothing is too much to ask and the milk/water left in the fridge outside of the room were a nice touch. Would definitely look to stay here again on our next visit to Edinburgh.
- benita (8/5): - Very pleasant stay. Clean and comfortable and walking distance from Waverley Station. In a quiet side street but close enough to a busy road with plenty of bus stops, shops and cafes. A couple of minutes walk to Calton hill.
- Vincent (10/5): Worth the stay - Rooms are very well kept even have a microwave you can use thro day and evening and fresh milk in mini fridge with buscuits and a pod coffee machine at only 50p a cup
- Steve (8/5): - A great location...super close to many restaurants and cafes. 15 minute walk to the train station and the shopping of the miracle mile. Very quiet side street. Richard the owner was extremely helpful and accommodating. First class service!! The only downside was a shower a bit small for my 6ft 215 pound bulk. Will stay again next time in Edinburgh.
- Yin Sum (10/5): Enjoyable stay in Edinburgh - We did not expect a Guest House was that clean and quiet. It was convenience to use the pre-set code (sent by email beforehand) to access to the Guest House and room. Also, the location was good and convenient to most of the attractions in the city center. We enjoyed the stay and particularly the welcoming of the Guest House manager (his name is Richard - hope that we were right).
- Piotr (10/5): Nice hotel 10 mins walk from the centre - 10 mins walk to the main station and main attractions. Friendly staff, clean rooms and very safe.
- S&R (10/5): - Very close to Scotland’s People. Richard and Rachel very accomodating with early arrival. Nice People!
- carol (10/5): - Edinburgh is an amazing place to stay ,hotel was lovely
- Robert (10/5): - Very comfortable, well located ... host went above and beyond to help me get my laundry sorted (stay was part of much longer trip)
- Diane (10/5): Nice, clean and quiet - Quiet, close to city centre, easy walking distance to Princes Street, Waverly train and airport tram. Richard, the owner was very accommodating.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Nice place - Very kind host who was very helpful about the local area and things to do. It's more of a guest house than a hotel (the room wasn't made up, for example, between our two nights. But nice to support a small business, and the room was very comfortable and in a good part of town, lots of local bars and restaurants and near, but not in the heart of the most touristy part of town.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Good location, comfortable, clean but very run down
- sarah (10/5): lovely building nice hosts - Lovely hosts nice clean warm room
- mark (10/5): - Good location. Friendly owners. Room was very clean and comfortable.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Hotel close to Edinburgh city centre - good location and close to city centre and all the tourist attractions. The only drawback is that there is no convenient street parking in front of the house for those who drive into Edinburgh. There is free street parking about a 10 minute walk from the hotel.
The room where we stayed is at street level and can be noisy.
otherwise a very pleasant stay. Would recommend to anyone.
- kerris (10/5): A quiet gem in a central location - The perfect spot for those who like a good night sleep, but being in a central location.
Spacious room, all very clean and tidy.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great location - helpful staff - We had a lovely 3 night stay at the Lantern Guest House. With our own entrance, we could come and go as we pleased. It was a great location - close to transportation and an easy walk to the Old Town. It was a 5 minute walk to Calton Hill. Very reasonable rates.....definitely stay here again.
- Lorraine (2/5): Very dissappointed. - I was so dissappointed with this guest house when i arrived the owner toald me my room was small understement it was tiny it was down in a basement no room to move looking out on 2 walls. The owner moved us to a bigger room not a great one but bigger. The towels that were ment to be whit were a dirty grey and we got one. The house in general was grotty dirty delph in the kitchen clothes drying in the hall on a clothes horse.the owner asked for his money before we even put our bags down i wonder why. It looks like anyone can call there housr a guest house and charge what they want.i wont be back.
- S P (8/5): - Comfortable stay. Close to town is a plus.
- Debra (8/5): Nice place - Richard, the owner, is very friendly and helpful. The room and ensuite bathroom were very clean.
- Peter (10/5): Big rooms, great host - A very spacious room with ensuite and fast wifi. The host is very welcoming and made us feel right at home. Lots of information about Edinburgh.
The bed was comfortable and the room very clean. I liked the little extras like a small fridge in the common area for storing food. Milk was also provided for my morning coffee.
We would definitely stay there again on our next visit to Edinburgh.
- John (10/5): comfortable and value for money - We stay in hotels often and this place is perfect for the money. The memory foam mattress was good for my bad back. Ignore any pedantic negative reviews, if you want to stay in a 5star hotel then pay to stay in a 5 star hotel.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Handy for the city centre. - A pleasant break, nice welcome, liked the fresh milk in the fridge. Would happily use again.
- Wai Yee (10/5): A pleasant stay - In general, the stay was pleasant. Owner of the guest house was very nice and helpful. The price was great and the room was really clean and comfy! We stayed and the lower groud floor next to the side entrance which made it convenient to access the building. The only downside was that it took us some time to walk from the guest house to the popular sigghtseeing locations. There are pubs and cafes for meals. Great place for couples and families to stay!
