Guest Reviews
- Jason (10/5): A perfect hotel - A great place just outside of the city. Quiet, peaceful and right in the rainforest.
- Kathleen (10/5): - Great place, we only wish we would have spent more than one night there.
- Charlene (10/5): - The sound of the nature right next to you is just amazing , everything green ! The beautiful humming birds flying next to you teying to get the nectar is just an amazing experience.
- Marcia (10/5): - It was a quaint no frills hotel perfectly situated in a quiet area near the town on fortuno. Breakfast was delicious. We were a 6 person family and fit comfortably in their six person suite. Would come again. Thanks for a great stay. Loved all the beautiful flowers and hummingbirds in the area.
- Bobby (10/5): - It was a joy to stay two nights so near the volcano in such a beautiful place. The cabin was roomy, clean, and comfortable, the restaurant was excellent, and the grounds (including the "nature walk" in the jungle at the rear of the property) were spectacular. The owner and staff are great people too. I would recommend this place to anyone without hesitation.
- April (10/5): - Friendly, helpful staff! Great location next to chocolate tour and La Fortuna Waterfall. Great affordable option for a family!
- Daniel (10/5): - Great property, great service. Shower and toilet needed a little maintenance but other than that everything was perfecto!
- Anjelica (10/5): - Beautiful property with sloths and little Al king trail on site. Staff was very friendly and helpful and individual cabins kept the stay quiet and a natural setting. About 5 min drive to town and restaurants, etc.
- MOHAMED (10/5): - We stayed at the hotel faro arena and had a wonderful experience. The property owner was very friendly, and the entire property was exceptionally clean. The reception staff were welcoming and accommodating, making our stay even more pleasant. The value for the price we paid was excellent. I wish I had chosen to stay at Fatima Arenal instead of the Magic Mountain Hotel, and I will definitely stay here next time. Highly recommended!
- Sujen (10/5): - We arrived early and they were very accommodating. Everyone was nice and helpful. The hotel location is fairly close to the la fortuna waterfall . We didn’t have our own car but it was easy to get around using the taxi services. Nice and quiet environment with a path to explore and encounter wildlife. We saw sloths right on the property.
- Venkataramana (6/5): - Looks old can be enhanced to make it really nice. Needs some work to make it a good property.
- Sandhya (2/5): - Never go to this hotel
- Matthew (6/5): - Pros
-Staff was helpful recommending activities
-pretty jungle path at back of property
-Concenient location to town and reliable uber
Cons
-Electricity went out 3X first night we were there
-Toilet kept backing up and gurgled/bubbled all nt
- yu jiao (10/5): - Owner Mr.J is very friendly and helpful!
- Victor (10/5): - The staff was amazing. They even washed my clothes for $5. I saw a bunch of Toucans. Breakfast was delicious.
- AROUN (10/5): Holy Nature Paradise - We saw many toucans and a sloth for the first time in Costa Rica! The view was stunning and the owner was pleasant and gave us tickets to the Baldi hot springs for a very good prices. There was a problem with a gutter and the smell bothered us because it was very strong poop smell on and off. We would still be willing to come back, lovely ambiance.
- Sarah (10/5): - The room was spacious and had everything we needed for our short stay. Breakfast had a great choice and was delicious. Staff were really helpful and friendly. We really loved our stay.
- Kristi (10/5): - Beautiful gardens.
- Kara (10/5): - This hotel was everything I was looking for and everything my family didn’t know they wanted until we got there! Amazing grounds. There was a trail through a beautiful forest full of everything tropical including tons of flowers, trees, plants and animals. We saw many sloths, toucans, crested Juan, cows and more. Woke up to a variety of birds chirping. Breakfast was included and good. Very friendly staff. One guy took me on a walk through the trail and taught me many things, I can’t remember his name (Avar maybe?) Good clean pool. Vegetable garden was fun, they are working on being fully farm to table one day. Probably 1.5 miles from lots of restaurants and 5-10 minutes from amazing La Fortuna Waterfall. The only downside was our toilet had some problems but I’m sure staff can get that fixed. They were readily available to help if needed.
We will definitely stay here again if we return to Costa Rica!
- Dick (10/5): - Close to Volcano Staff was extraordinary, Very quiet. Saw 2 Toucans too
- Faythe A (10/5): Amazing Resort and Cabins - Our stay was amazing! Beautiful cabin in the rainforest! I felt like I was emerged in the middle of the rainforest. The cabin was spacious, clean, AC worked well, water good and hot, toilet flushed with no problem, nice kitchen with small fridge, coffee pot, water pot and dishes.
The location is close to town, hot springs, waterfall and volcano. The free breakfast was absolutely amazing and the people serving it was very nice and helpful. The front desk clerk was professional, very nice and helped us a lot. The cabins sits in a very nice resort area with a swimming pool and wild life. We seen the sloth everyday with toucans.
I really enjoyed staying here. I felt right at home. Everything about this place was a five star and better. Plus the price was even better.
- Kimberly (10/5): - Servicio muy excelente. El personal es súper amable y el desayuno que viene incluido está muy delicioso.
- Larry (10/5): - Nice off road property with A/C. Nice owners, their is a Sloth that hangs out up in on of the trees. Free Breakfast was cooked for you while you had your coffee. Very Nice
- kaymarie (10/5): - Place is very nice and much needed privacy having your own building
- Cale (10/5): - I nice getaway nearby La Fortuna set in nature
- John (10/5): - This is a very nice and quaint hotel. Very convenient to everything that you would want to do in the area. Lots of activities. The only thing that would’ve been nice would’ve been a small refrigerator in the room. Amazing pizza made in the restaurant.
- Janet (6/5): - We loved watching the birds on the feeders at breakfast. This was by no means a three star hotel. The owner was helpful, but the rooms were very basic- no hair dryer, no table, ( no fridge of course). The gardens around it were lovely, but the walk through them needed maintaining. Go for the birds not the luxuries!
- Kirsten (10/5): - Most of the staff were wonderful. The separate rooms were lovely, comfortable and private with little gardens and sitting areas outside each one. The pool is surrounded by concrete but a nice amenity that we certainly used! Breakfasts were very good. The owners let us stay later than checkout until our transportation arrived. It is located outside of town, which is lovely for the peacefulness, but requires a taxi to get anywhere.
- Eugene (10/5): - Unassuming area on a regular street. Small clean family hitel
- Katie (10/5): - We loved Hotel Faro Arenal! This was our favorite stay of our entire trip in Costa Rica. Upon arriving we were welcomed by the family who owns and runs the property, and shown around to its beauty. I traveled myself as a single mother with four children and felt very welcomed and safe. I hope to visit again one day.
- Arthur (10/5): - We loved the beautiful little cabin we stayed in. It was very spotless, quiet and private with beautiful gardens in front.
The staff is very helpful. There is a lovely little nature trail we explored while waiting for our room to be ready early. The gardener showed us many beautiful plants and pointed out the sleeping sloth and the favourite tree of the toucans. The breakfast was lovely and the birdfeeders!
- Paul (8/5): - While my stay at this hotel was a decision that I made last minute, my stay, there was excellent, and I couldn’t be happier that I made the decision that I did. The accommodations were clean , and the staff was very polite. You definitely have the feeling here that you are amongst nature. Naturally beautiful, constantly the sounds of birds and other wildlife. As a matter of fact, there was a sloth on the property, at times, so close you could touch him, but I did not at the suggestion of the staff. A wonderful experience. I came to Costa Rica to be amongst nature and this location delivered. It was about a 5 to 10 minute drive to get to the Le Fortuna waterfall, another great experience. It was also a 5 to 10 minute drive to get to La Fortuna center of town where you can buy groceries or whatever needs you might have. my hotel room, a free upgrade offered me a coffee pot so I could enjoy a nice coffee first thing in the morning and a very spacious room. I would definitely enjoy this hotel in the future!
- Thomas (10/5): Great stay - Ever and Javier were awesome. We enjoyed our time here and the staff made it all the more special. Our room was big and the surrounding area was beautiful. Thank you for kindness. We will be back!
- Diana (6/5): - We had a few issues during our stay here but the owner, Javier, did a great job trying to make things right.
We arrived to find out our room had been treated for extermination and the odor was still too strong. He offered us a room at a nearby hotel and an upgrade for the following night back at Faro Arenal.
The room nearby was very new - so new it did not have lamps - just overhead lighting - and the refrigerator had not even been plugged in; but it was very clean and the staff was wonderful.
Next day we return to Faro Arenal and got our upgraded casita, and during a particularly heavy wind and rain storm, had a small leak in the roof. But, it wasn't on the bed and when the storm ended so did the leak.
It was clean and I was able to use their laundry service. The breakfast was simple but tasty and we saw Arenal which was the point of the trip. Not sure I would book here again but it was sufficient for our short stay near La Fortuna.
- Bill (10/5): - The owners allowed us early access to our rooms saving us a lot of issues as we had no where else to go and 4 large bags. Staff was great, property was amazing with an excellent location in the jungle and direct access to walking paths filled with tons of gorgeous fauna, hummingbirds and toucans . I would stay here again and highly recommend for a eco friendly environment 8)
- LeQuyen (10/5): - I booked this last minute due to an emergency that required me to change my plan. I was in for a pleasant surprise. This is a beautiful hotel and conveniently located. We got to see a sloth and a large variety of birds on the property. The room was clean and comfortable. Will definitely come back.
- Andriy (6/5): - Needs renovation
- Frank (10/5): - Affordable, clean, super friendly staff. Sloth, Toucans and many cool birds on the property. Great breakfast. This place is the real deal!
- Darrin (10/5): - Owners are really nice and helpfull
- Kristina (10/5): - Loved staying in the cozy cabin, walking the trail on the property, and the breakfast was nice too.
- Michael (10/5): - Spacious clean room. Love the grounds and the swimming pool. Sloths onsite was a plus!
- SUDIPTA (10/5): - Excellent owner and great service by the staff at the hotel.
- Pritesh (10/5): - Excellent gardens in the property. Javier provided great service, he took care of us very well. All other staff members were very courteous. Good breakfast. Loved it.
- Nicole (10/5): - This place is so great for a nature lover! The owners are so kind and accommodating. I had such an amazing time here. As a bird photographer, I was in paradise! My dream was to photograph toucans in the wild, and the first morning after arriving, I got to see them! They also have an amazing spa service. They actually come to your cabin for your massage, or whatever service you get done. Highly recommend! I will definitely be staying here again!
- Cindy (10/5): - Had a wonderful stay at Hotel Faro Arenal. Javier and everyone at Faro Arenal were friendly, welcoming and helpful. Our room which was in a lovely stand alone building was beautifully decorated and comfortably set up. The restaurant served delicious food and the grounds were gorgeous and peaceful. Will definitely stay at Faro Arenal when in Costa Rica again!
- Jacob (10/5): Great for Families & Birders/Photographers - This was a great stay in the Arenal area. From the property there is a view of the volcano. I also loved that they maintain a nice nature trail. We saw six sloths, including a mother and baby sloth in it. There were also tons of birds, including hummingbirds along the trail. They have bird feeders at their restaurant, so you get to see many birds while eating meals. We really enjoyed the included breakfast. This stay was perfect for our family of five and a great location for birders/photographers. This stay was a good value and located near La Fortuna and close to La Fortuna Waterfall.
- Mark (10/5): - This family owned operated local hotel is an excellent economical option in a breath taking location. The staff is super friendly and accommodating. The resident sloths were a pleasant surprise. There are trails on the property that give view of wildlife that surpass the local tourist traps. We had amazing views of the volcano and were entertained at breakfast with various, varieties of tropical birds. If you are looking for a "value" location this is the spot. If you desire the Ritz Carlton keeping shopping. This is an authentic Tico Costa Rica experience.
Pura Vida!
- Geisel (8/5): - Un lugar familiar y ameno.. las instalaciones lo hacen sentir dentro de un ambiente tropical.. y el trato del personal definitivamente demuestra un gran calor humano.
- NAND (10/5): - No refrigerator in the room and toilet flush is low pater pressure.
- Aekang (10/5): - We really liked this property and felt it was perfect for our needs. If you’re looking for a nice, clean place to stay with great breakfast look no further! I love that we had our own little villa and the property grounds were kept up really well. They had an awesome breakfast- 3 options- Costa Rican Typical, American Breakfast, and continental and all 3 were great- tasty and good portions. The family who owns the property is very nice and most importantly, our beds were comfortable (on the firm side), and the place was very clean. This is a no frills place so they didn’t have shampoo/conditioner but did have bar soap and hand soap which I think is fine given the price. Great value and we would definitely stay here again.
- FLORENTINA (8/5): - Manager was extremely welcoming and helpful.
- Anna-Emilie (10/5): - Very sweet staff and nice area!
- JESSICA (10/5): - This hotel has a very strategic location, not too far from town, not too far from major touristic spots. Supermarket and bakery are at walkable distance.
The pool in the hotel is a charm place to hang out at night right before bed, so relaxing.
- Jeffrey (10/5): - Nice breakfast. Friendly and helpful staff. Beautiful property. Would gladly stay again.
- Natalya (10/5): Great place in La Fortuna - Great family owned hotel. Clean, comfortable, centrally located. Amazing property that is well maintained and cared for. The staff is super friendly and helpful. Great atmosphere all around. Special thanks goes to Wilson, the property gardener who helped us spot a sloth! If you are in la Fortuna, this is a place to stay. Thank you, Joselyn, for hosting us.
- Paty (10/5): 100% YES - This place was at the foot of Arenal vocano. The owners, Who are family. Were very friendly and offered lots of suggestions. Each room is a separate cabaña and very cute. It is right at the foot of Arenal volcano. Nice pool. Breakfast was delicious. Walking paths. 3km or so to all the eateries and town.Would highly recommend it!!!
- Ellie (10/5): - We had a wonderful stay! The room was just as advertised, with good working air conditioning, hot water, delicious breakfast, and a resident sloth! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would come back!
We opted to do a day trip to los lagos for $18 each, which was also wonderful! There are many affordable sodas to eat at near this hotel, but a car is needed!
- Matthew (10/5): - Faro did a great job with the accommodations. The staff was super friendly. They also have a sloth on property that tends to hang around.
- Rajni (10/5): - Kevin was so friendly when we checked in. He showed us to our room and told us about the mama and baby sloth that hangout on the property that we got to watch the next day. We also saw a toucan! There's a short walking trail at the back end of the hotel where we got to see a bunch of hummingbirds and where you get a great view of the Arenal volcano. Breakfast was included and cooked to order. The location of the hotel is great. It's a short drive to La Fortuna and to the springs. Would definitely stay there again. It was a great place if you are traveling on a budget.
- Khoa (8/5): - Hotel is in a remote area. It is very quiet. We love listening to the bird chirping in the morning. Also love that there are mama and baby sloth in their garden.
- Premkumar (10/5): Cozy - Comfortable cottage . Nice surroundings
- KATHY (8/5): - Great view of the volcano. Beautiful plants and birds. Super staff. Economic place to stay for taking in the sites if you have a car or tours booked
- Treavor (10/5): - Hotel Faro Arenal was perfect for our family as we traveled with 4 kids to La Fortuna. The property was close to town, which was great for us as we shuttled between activities and nap time. The hosts/staff were super helpful and friendly - they gave us great recommendations for eating and on the first day they were quick to show us were to find a sloth in the back of their property! We loved spending the heat of the day in the pool, which was right out the door for us in our little cabin. The flora and birds on site were also great. We also looked forward to breakfast everyday and they offered us something for everyone. We'd definitely stay again!
- Brent (10/5): Great Time - Great place! I would stay again. Sloths on the walking trail
- Yolaisy (10/5): - Cozy place with amazing views. You'll be in direct contact with nature. The rooms are big and clean in all aspects. I love that the rooms are separate, like a small villa. I felt safe and welcomed. From my personal experience , I’ll rather stay here than in a “VIP” resort. You can still explore the area, which is very close to La Fortuna waterfall, hot springs, and other recreations where you just pay for a day pass. It's definitely a five-star experience.
- Jeremy (10/5): - Staff were great.
- Mukundan (10/5): - Such a great experience with our own cabin in the rainforest! Breakfast was included and tasted very good in my opinion. We were lucky to have booked a rental car to get around places easily, but it was a wonderful stay to be in nature and save a few bucks.
- Jasmin (10/5): - Overall our stayed was awesome, the owners are very friendly and very accommodate, they switched our room because the issue with the internet, they had no problem in give us a bigger and nicer room for not extra charge. They also have a laundry service with very low charges, and was ready the next morning. Very convenient, we definitely coming back here. Thank you so much.
- Jesse (10/5): - Breakfast with the birds
- Ian (10/5): - A beautiful, and very quiet location. A couple of sloths in trees on the property was a bonus!
- Ehab (10/5): - It’s amazing place with the nicest view. It’s the closest you can be to nature
- Jennifer (10/5): - Such cute little casas! Very clean. Property is delightful! Sloths in the back trail. Such a gem! My only issue was the kitchenette being open. We tried to cook and the ants invaded. Fortunately, there is a sliding glass door to the kitchen so there is no issue of bugs elsewhere.
- Donna (10/5): - This was a lovely local experience with the nicest family who owns & runs this hotel. Javier & Yorlany were so sweet & responsive to any needs. The price is such great value, rooms are spacious & have 4 beds, it’s very safe, close to everything, breakfast has 4 options in a beautiful outdoor setting & there is a forest walk in back w sloths. All in all a fantastic stay!!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Our experience at the hotel was great. It was clean and owner is very accommodating to our needs. There is a trail within the property and we got to see sloths and many humming birds. I would highly recommend this place. Owners also gave us good recommendations for nearby hotels and activities.
- Dan (8/5): - Great family owned place! Nice accommodations. Wild sloth on site! Really enjoyed breakfast! ☺️
- Jamie (10/5): - Great place to stay and a great location! The owner is very nice and helpful! Pool closes at 6 which seems early. Breakfast was good and you have 4 options to choose from. Would stay here again!
- Rodrigo (6/5): - Friendly, clean, just basic a room and bed. Weak Wifi signal.
- Zila (10/5): - I just loved to stay here . Very quiet . Not to far from centro of fortuna . The cabins were amazing. We stayed at the new ones so they were very nice . The breakfast was awesome very delicious. I would definitely stay here again but maybe more days just to relax there .
- Isaac (10/5): - The staff was incredible, beautiful property with its own small hiking trail, and we were able to see a family of sloths that live in the back thanks to the friendly and helpful staff. Breakfast was included and cooked to order. It's only a few minutes to the waterfall and a quick drive to downtown La Fortuna. Highly reccomend this place.
- Noel (6/5): - Good breakfast. Reception moved me to a room closer to pool with no hassle BUT I had to pay cash because for some reason they couldn't take a credit card. The internet did not carry to rooms, not even to outside of the room
- David (10/5): - Fantastic choice for me. Was everything expected , not touristy, very caring and helpful staff. The only thing that would have been nice would have been a small refrigerator but I’m not complaining. I would absolutely stay there again
- Amy (8/5): - Beautiful setting and amazing view from our room to watch the sunset. A little hike up hill to get to our room, but totally worth the view. Ate dinner at the restaurant one evening and again had a spectacular view of the sunset. Overall a great stay.
- Russell (10/5): Exceptional hotel for the money. I thought it was - Exceptional hotel for the money. I thought it was quite a beautiful place.
- Jeremias (8/5): Great stay - Great experience. Super friendly owner. Very basic cottages. No microwave or fridges in cottages. My suggestion is maybe the owner can purchase 3 or 4 mini fridges and rent them out daily especially a fridge. A very pleasant stay out of the city.
- Veronica (10/5): Aloha from Hawaii…… - Checkin was very cordial….had a choice of cabins to choose from. Beautiful, spacious room. Colorful cabins amongst the rain forest. Very filling breakfasts……friendly cooks and servers. Clean environment….very clean pool. Lots of vegetation to look for wildlife about. Highly recommend this accommodation.
- Magalie (8/5): - Nice property, great value, landscaping is beautiful. The cabins are brand new and were very clean. The location is peaceful, we saw many toucans!
- Judy (10/5): - Beautifully maintained gardens. Breakfast was very delicious. Room was comfortable with AC. Convenient location to get to other attractions around the area.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - It's a decent property with simple and clean rooms. Location is right out of town, quiet and convenient. Breakfast is adequate. It's fun to watch birds in the garden while having breakfast because the staff put out fruit for the birds every morning. I got some nice bird photos out of it. The only complain I have is that, the second night I was woken up by "Happy Birthday" songs in various language close to 11PM - apparently some staff member's birthday and my room was right across from the breakfast area where the celebration was going on. Then it's loud conversations and laughter. I complained, and they stopped after a short while. However, afterwards there were sounds from some sort of repair outside until around 12:30AM - it kept me wide awake and I was unable to fall asleep after that. It's just too bad the place seems not to observe "quiet time". Otherwise it's a nice place.
- Scott (10/5): - The property is family owned and operated and they do an exceptional job to make sure the guests are happy. Only issue was the hot water mechanism did not heat the shower water enough. We were very happy with the breakfast choices. The restaurant had wonderful views of the birds (attracted to the fruit set out for them). We only stayed one evening, but would stay again if we return to the area. They do not have their own hot springs, but the area has several places you can choose from if you want that option.
- Julie (8/5): Toucans - These little huts are like private cottages and close to town. The birds on the grounds are amazing; saw 4 toucans and other neon blue birds... we saw more than we saw on our hike to the mountain. Lol. Also they have an amazing gardens that surround you. Overall very good stay.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Lovely and knowledgable hosts, friendly staff, great breakfasts and outstanding location. highly recommend.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Faro Arenal was the highlight of my stay in La Fortuna! Yorleny (the owner) is an absolute gem! She helped to make my stay a memorable one. If you have a car in La Fortuna, don't worry about finding things to do. Yorleny helped to book my activities and communicate as my spanish isn't that great (her english is perfect) The hotel is a hidden oasis in the city. Its far enough off the beaten path but close enough to downtown. Dont be worried about the low price as compared to other hotels, it does not mean the place is low quality. Great value, great host, and great area. Absolutely no complaints, I would recommend anyone to stay here! PS, the breakfast and bird gardens are top notch!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The couple who own this property go out of their way to make sure you have a wonderful stay. Our room was very clean and cozy. The surrounding property was well maintained with beautiful gardens. Great view of volcano from property. The breakfast each morning was amazing. If you are feeling ambitious walking to la Fortuna takes 30-45 mins or is a affordable cab ride. If I return to this area I would definitely stay here again.
- Deborah (8/5): Definitely recommend - Beautiful grounds, The owners were very accommodating when our flight was delayed and arranged for us to gain access to the property. The cabins are clean but you can hear everything going on outside at all hours of the day. Breakfast was lovely. There were a few restaurants within a 10 to 15 minute walk but you will need a car or taxi to get to the main town area
- Verified traveler (8/5): Arenal 2018/19 - The host was very friendly and upbeat. The area of Arenal is beautiful with lots of thermal springs.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The property owners and hosts, Yorlaney and Javier, were wonderful and very attentive to their guests. They had many good suggestions for seeing the sights and restaurants. We felt like we were staying with longtime friends. The rooms were very quiet and clean.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Beautiful gardens with thousands of birds and the view of the volcano make this property so unique. It's not a 5 star hotel but the owners maintain it and serve their clients at the 5 star level. I miss it already!
- Linda (8/5): - Yorleny made us feel welcome and right at home. When we told her about little water pressure , she took care of it the same day. breakfast was hearty and we even got tortillas and sour cream! the stay was pura vida!
- Howard (10/5): - So glad I selected this location. Our experience with our visit was everything we’d expected. The owners are beautiful and very kind people. Can’t wait to return.
