Guest Reviews
- Bryan (10/5): Wonderful stay - Beautiful property and excellent staff Nothing
- Richard (8/5): -
- valerie (10/5): Exceptionally lovely, peaceful and with outstanding food. - The property, the room, design and decor, dinner was really excellent!! Loved the goats and hydrangeas and staff as well!! A heated pool and spa which I know is coming soon
- Nixon (10/5): -
- Diogo (10/5): -
- Olga (9/5): Amazing location, very good food, Nice stuff. However they tend to turn off aircon when you are not in the room :) - Location, stuff, beds Might be chilly because aircondition is not very strong.
- Paula (6/5): Poor value for money - Location close to Furnas lake As soon as we arrived, we felt quite pressured to decide whether we would have dinner. We were asked to choose in advance both the exact time and what we wanted to eat. The same happened with breakfast—we had to specify the exact time we would go, which made it difficult to relax and enjoy the experience freely.
Regarding the room, we were offered an “upgrade,” but we were placed in the first bungalow next to the reception, with zero privacy since there were no curtains in the living room.
As for the amenities, the bungalow felt quite outdated, especially the bathroom, which was rather old.
The breakfast price was excessive—€20 per person—when in most hotels it is already included. Dinner was also very expensive, and on top of that, we were asked to leave a tip of 10%, 15%, or 20%.
Overall, there are many hotels with a much better value for money. This was a disappointing experience.
- Andre (9/5): -
- Frances (10/5): The perfect stay to end out Azores trip - Stunning stay in an incredible location. The location is right by the lake, with nature all around. The perfect end to our trip
- Francesco (8/5): Relaxing stay - Superb surroundings and unique chalet setting. Great breakfast and friendly staff. It’s rather overprice for the offered amenities in the room. You pay for the setting and relaxing location.
- Bastien (9/5): - Very welcoming staff - pool is starting to get aged compared to the pic but there is Sauna being built. We got upgrade for free for the inconvenience of the ongoing work. Location is very nice to hike around the lake and visit furnas. Very quiet and embedded in nature.
- Dolan (9/5): relaxing outdoorsy holiday - unique spaces with comfortable vibes. the pool area and spa was under construction but we still think it was worth it. would like to return when the spa facility are up and running. lovely garden spaces as well - would be a great wedding or private party destination that there was construction - they were polite about the noise but it would have been nice to have the facilities up and running - would return to take advantage of them
- Fiona (10/5): - From the moment you arrive at Furnas Lake Forest Living, you feel a sense of calm. The reception was easy to find and we received a very warm welcome and explanation of the property, then were guided to our house. It was a very personal experience and I appreciated the attentiveness of the staff.
The houses are secure, quiet, immaculately clean, and situated in a stunning forested area. There are even koi fish in the moat around the houses. All of the finishings were thoughtful and on brand for the location.
We were able to enjoy the a la carte breakfast prior to checking out, and it was both delicious and satisfying. I'm very sad that we were unable to secure a reservation for dinner due to a conflicting reservation, but that just means we are due for a trip back!
They are working on a spa and additional houses, which will make an already spectacular experience even better, I'm sure.
Obrigada for making us feel right at home during our short stay. Can't wait to visit again (for longer this time).

- Johanna (9/5): Top - Natuurlijke locatie Restaurant nogal gecompliceerde menu en altijd hetzelfde als je 5 d blijft maar prachtig zitten
- Browett (8/5): - Excellent location and atmosphere For price we paid per night, was disappointing not to have breakfast included. Would have been nice to have been warned about building work going on too as noise from this was very noticeable in an atmosphere that is otherwise so peaceful.
- Martin (8/5): beautiful peaceful location in the middle of nature - wonderful location in the middle of the forest but a short walk from Furnas lake, good pool and nice restaurant with high expensive but very quality food and drink - our daughter loved the added bonus of the animals on site some building work going on currently which very slightly effects the outlook from the accommodation and restaurant, im sure this will soon be completed and is a minor point which did not adversely effect the enjoyment of our stay
- Ferguson (7/5): A very peaceful location with great staff. - The room was large and in a really nice, quiet location. It’s surrounded by nature which added to the experience. The room needs maintenance. The bin mechanism was broken, the walls need repainting, parts of the wall are deteriorating, the bathroom glass has mineral build up, under the sink is rusting, among other minor things. They are adding more units and a spa to the hotel, which is good, but they should work on the existing rooms and maintenance first in my opinion.
- Tatjana (10/5): - Beautiful property. The room was spacious and clean. We had dinner at the hotel and it was excellent. The breakfast was also very good.
- marc (4/5): Dommage - Personnel eh restaurant Forte humidité dans la chambre
Travaux en cours autour de la piscine
- Cheryl (7/5): Quiet and quaint accommodation - Quiet relaxing accommodation; unique and spacious accommodations; so close to Lake Furnas to be able to walk there! Would have been nice to have a spa or other amenities; got charged extra for dinner and had to inform staff to be refunded
- Ewa (9/5): A perfect place for people who do not like the hustle and bustle of mainstream tourism. - It is a perfect quiet location a short drive from the town of Furnas. It is cleaned daily with fresh bed linen and towels and coffee capsules. There are construction works going on from 8:30 on the site - so expect the sound of cement mixer, drilling and pounding and occasional shoutouts and loud conversations from the workers. This makes hanging out at the property impossible unless you want to hear all those sounds - you can of course close the windows - they are sound-proof - but it kind of kills the purpose of staying here to be close to nature. It would be nice to have been infirmed about it before arrival.
- Yolande (10/5): Amazing experience - We really loved our stay at Furnas. The hotel staff was nice and helpful, breakfast buffet was excellent (it didn’t vary over the 5 days though), the cabin was great and we made good use of our kitchenette (microwave didn’t work). The pool isn’t heated and the weather gets a bit chilly in certain days but it’s not profound so it wasn’t too bad. The hotel proposed a zip line activity which was a lot of fun. The restaurant was only upon reservation at night (4 or 6 course menu) and quite pricey, you had to cook your own lunch or take the car to go downtown 15mn from there. I scored comfort slightly down because of the 2 new buildings they were building literally next to our cabin, the noise would go on all day and didn’t even stop during lunchtime which made it complicated to use the balcony… but all in all an amazing experience!
- Stéphane (8/5): Superbe emplacement au bord du lac de Furnas - L’appartement était très spacieux, calme et environnement reposant Pas d’accès wifi depuis l’appartement uniquement à l’accueil
- Viktor (10/5): - We enjoyed family stay here, want to come back
- Benelda (7/5): Notre séjour aurait été meilleur s'ils avaient pu éliminer l'odeur. - The rooms are big with kitchen, very serene forest and just across from the lake. The food at the restaurant was excellent. Le salle de bain avait une terrible odeur d'urine. Nous avons informé le housekeeping, mais rien est fait. L'odeur était trés forte.
- Nichole (8/5): Very unique spot. - Incredibly beautiful! The rooms are private, unique and comfortable. The location is out of town in a tranquil setting with wildlife and lush gardens. The owner approached us as we were strolling the gardens and asked if we needed help. It was a bit of putting as it stated on the website that we were free to explore. Her approach could have been less inquisitive . She asked if we were guests right away as if we were just intruding. For the cost of the facilities, I would expect to feel more welcomed. Once she knew we were guests she tried to chit chat but at that point we were a bit offended.
- Daniel (4/5): Disappointing -
- Mark (5/5): Beware construction noise. - Interesting area of volcanic hot springs.
Great evening meal. CONSTRUCTION. Why do hotels not tell you before you arrive?
- Gøril (10/5): A magical place in an enchanted forest. One night was too short. Beautiful breakfast. Great staff. - Glorious, magical location in an enchanted forest. Temporarily, there is building work happening to create a beautiful spa and more cabins. The work goes on 9.00 - 13.00 and 15.00 - 17.00 more or less - so don't expect magical silence during these hours. ( But they work relatively quietly as they are doing one cabin at a time - and it is not intrusive visually. )
- Jennifer (9/5): Superb -
- Kathleen (10/5): Exceptional - Unique lodging. "At one with nature" feel. Farm to table dining. Excellent staff. Very clean. Excellent breakfast but a tad expensive.
- rachelpick (10/5): A hug from the forest - Furnas Lake Forest Living is the perfect place to stay when you visit Sao Miguel—especially for travelers seeking a good balance of comfort and independence.
First, the location is absolutely to die for—convenience-wise, it’s right across from the lake and from Mata Jardim Jose do Canto, and a very short drive from the town of Furnas proper. Beauty-wise, you feel like you are being embraced by the forest when you stay here. The grounds are just so lovely and peaceful, even on the Azores’ more foggy days.
Second, the room I stayed in (Oak studio) was excellent. It even had a little kitchen, which I was not expecting and was a very welcome bonus. It feels more like staying in a small apartment than a hotel room—even though the extremely lovely and helpful staff are just around the corner and happy to bring you anything you need. For example, I always find the mattresses abroad to be hard and tough on my back, and the staff made up my bed with an extra mattress topper and blankets to increase the softness :)
Third, the food is incredible. The dinner was the best meal I had the whole time I was on the island, and the breakfasts offer a ton of variety. I would love a recipe for that banana jam!
There were so many nice touches—like the little arrangements of greenery and flowers pruned from their grounds that they put in the rooms and all over the property, or the jars of green tea and butter cookies left in your room when you check in.
After my stay at Furnas Lake, I spent two nights at Octant Furnas—a larger, “fancier” hotel with more amenities—and I honestly did not enjoy it half as much. The more resort-y vibe of Octant simply didn’t mesh nearly as well with the feeling of the Azores and of the island.
Sao Miguel is a unique destination that requires a unique hotel. Furnas Lake’s eco-conscious focus, coupled with its exceptional hospitality, is the answer. I really felt like a special guest on someone’s beautiful estate, and in fact almost like an old friend. I hope to be back someday!
- Rachel (10/5): Exceptional -
- Elizabeth (8/5): Very good -
- Nahla (9/5): Superb -
- Kim (10/5): Exceptional -
- Annie (10/5): - J’ai tout aimé de mon expérience au Furnas Lake. L’expérience en soit vaut tellement la peine. Je recommande à tout le monde de séjourner là-bas le souper et également une expérience incroyable que je recommande.
- meredithb0001 (10/5): We had to stay another night! - Came here on our honeymoon and were given the warmest welcome. The setting was beautiful and serene. We liked wandering through the gardens before dinner at the excellent on site restaurant. There is a large park right next to the hotel and I liked going for a run around the lake in the mornings. Everything was so great, we chose to extend our stay by another night!
- Rebecca (10/5): - Impeccable. I wanted a nice upscale stay and the well known hotel with the garden was not super accommodating when I called them to reschedule my trip, in fact they were rude. I decided to take a chance and find somewhere else and did I find a gem! We stayed in the Villa. It was incredible and the grounds were stunning. A short walk to the lake as well. I have a feeling this is an up and coming place that will be tough to book in the future, stay here, it’s an incredible stay. The people make the place as well, sweet, kind and genuine
- Alister (9/5): Very pleasent - The location. Set in a tranquil valley surrounded by forested hills, this is a very relaxing place to spend a few days. Although the restaurant is not open every evening there is a good selection of places to eat just 10minutes drive drive in the small town of Furness. The popular restaurants are busy at times so booking in advance is recommended, although on two nights our family group of 7 found no problem finding somewhere without advance booking.
Very helpful friendly staff
A hire car is essential as public transport is very limited in this corner of the island. There is little to say. All good! The facilities are being improved with the addition of a spa, under construction while we were there.
Not having the restaurant open every evening is a mild inconvenience - someone has to forgo wine or beer inorder to drive to the local restaurants
- Elk (10/5): Exceptional. - Very very nice location and super helpful and friendly staff. Situated ideally in very charming and calming surroundings near to Furnas Lake for very nice blocks. Excellent restaurant and breakfast.
- Holly (9/5): Superb -
- Jakub (5/5): Nice but moldy hotel. - Rooms were nice and clean. At room you can smell the MOLD all the time. Even with the Air-dryer machine the mold is in the air and you can smell it from the sheets and towels. Reception did not do nothing about it.
- KatPat80 (6/5): Great location in Furnas, but over priced - This place is in a beautiful location close to Furnas lake. We stayed in a cedar villa as a family of 2 adults and 2 kids.
The villa is clean and comfortable. It has 1 bedroom, and a pull out bed in the living room. The living room unfortunately doesn’t have curtains, so it meant our kids woke up as soon as it was light outside. I did ask at reception about curtains or blinds, but they explained that it’s a living area and not a sleeping area. Just be aware of this - it’s great for couples, perhaps less suited for families.
The breakfasts were delicious, not a buffet but they made as much of everything as we wanted and had a good selection of hot and cold fresh, local options including pastries/cakes baked onsite which were amazing. Their home made granola was also amazing!
Tea and coffee were provided in the room, but not milk - take your own if you like milk with your tea/coffee. I did ask at reception about this too, and they explained that because the room comes with a kitchenette, they don’t provide milk. But they were happy to give us a small jug from the restaurant which gave us time to get our own later.
The main reason why I haven’t given more stars is due to the price. I booked quite far in advance which was probably a mistake - I paid over €400 per night which is at least 20% more than I paid for any of the other places we stayed in Sao Miguel, which were just as good as (or better than) this one. Sao Miguel has some amazing options!
If you can get a fair price, then this is a great option in a beautiful spot for couples.
- ReneeHadley (10/5): A perfect oasis of calm - Fantastic hotel just outside the town of Furnas. This was the perfect starting place to explore the island and enjoy all the beautiful nature it has to offer. Very serene and welcoming atmosphere, friendly staff who gave us some great recommendations for sights to see and things to do.
- Martin (8/5): Very good - excellent staff, service & breakfast. Property a bit tired, but it is about to be renovated. Hopefully that will deal with the humidity in the rooms humidity
- Damiano (10/5): Exceptional -
- Ferran (5/5): Passable -
- Danielle (10/5): A gorgeous space with incredibly helpful staff- right on the lake and a quick drive to Fuernas - Gorgeous location and facility- wish we had been able to try the restaurant but we came on days that it was closed. Would recommend this space - our rooms were large and spacious, we had a little deck to enjoy as well as a kitchenette. Staff was incredibly warm and helpful and gave us great recommendations on places to eat and explore. The floor was a little mildew-y just from the moisture within the space, not super strong but you could catch whiffs of it here and there. Otherwise everything was wonderful.
- Fredrick (10/5): - My wife and I had an excellent stay. Sara the receptionist was delightful and helpful. The garden is amazing
- Xiaodan (8/5): Very good -
- Mitchell (10/5): Fantastic - Beautiful, scenic location that captures the beauty of Furnas. Located very close to a lake, nature park and thermal baths, it is in an ideal location for many hot spots of the island.
- Kate (10/5): - Amazing hotel with great scenery. Staff were really friendly and helpful with local recommendations. Would highly recommend and would stay again!!
- Afrina (3/5): Poor -
- Heather (9/5): Lovely rural base for visiting Furnas - Beautifully located to enjoy the pleasures of fabulous Furnas. Located close to the lake on a gorgeous rural setting. We had a lovely dinner in the restaurant on the first night. We didn’t self cater during our 2 night stay. Facilities to self cater pretty basic and functional.
- Dawna (9/5): Lovely stay. Would book again. Best place we stayed in Portugal! - Friendly staff
Beautiful landscape & pool
Cute bats at night
Close to activities
Great communication Cabin could include additional knives and updated sandwich press/skillet
- Cristian (9/5): It was like living in a forest😎 - Almost everything Slow reception procedures
- Andreas (10/5): Exceptional -
- Laura (7/5): Good -
- David (9/5): Superb -
- MandyEK (10/5): Peaceful and Beautiful Hotel - My family stayed in the Chestnut house for two nights in June. We wanted to get out of the city for a few nights and this was a great place to do it. The Furnas area is beautiful, and the grounds of the hotel are so peaceful. We ate at the hotel both nights which was very delicious and also enjoyed the breakfast. The location so close to the hot springs (we tried both!), the lake, and the to the town of Furnas was wonderful. All the staff were friendly and helpful as well. Highly recommend!
- Michael (8/5): A beautiful experience which I highly recommend - Peaceful, Beautiful location and fantastic bird song Drying clothes was a problem especially when staying for more than a few days - high humidity means clothes that are damp are hard to dry in the cabin. A dehumidifier would be a great addition
- Tanja (10/5): marvelous! - Beautiful property, with own house, secluded but in the forest.
Excellent hospitality and delicious cuisine.
Close to the caldeiras in Furnas, great for hiking.
- Rachel (9/5): Superb -
- BillLA1 (4/5): Overrated dinner experience - You know you’re in trouble when the host boasts that the bartender is supposedly rated in the top 10 in Portugal as soon as you sit down and then he doesn’t know how to make a basic drink. The dining room decor is appealing but the food was bland and we left hungry. We also said in advance one member of our party was gluten free and almost all the food contained bread. The appetizer was inedible. Not worth the drive out of tone or the expense. The people who run this place should focus more on the actual dining experience than telling you how good they think they are.
- Julie (10/5): Exceptional -
- Richard (10/5): - Everything was to our expectation and liking.
- Kevin (10/5): - If you want a nice place close to Furnas this is highly recommended.
- Galina (9/5): Superb -
- Jordan (8/5): Beautiful space ..relaxing and would definitely recommend, nearby walks and lots of things to do nearby with a rental ca - Enchanting forest location Not great plant based options for breakfast- porridge and fruit ..the whole island is behind in offering plant based food, so was good we cook in our cabin
- Paul (8/5): Very good -
- Sparks (7/5): A bit underwhelming tbh - Lovely setting with lush green forest, beautifully kept grounds, comfortable beds, super tasty breakfast. The studio we rented for our children had an overwhelming mildew smell, which detracted considerably from the relaxing experience. Also, it felt as if the interior of the Japanese villa we also rented had received less attention than you would expect for this price. The dining table literally collapsed and the plastic fridge was visible in the kitchen.
- H6594HHandrewe (10/5): Tranquil, smart restaurant with excellent customer service. - I popped into the restaurant to have something to eat and drink before going on a hike. Although the restaurant was officially closed the very pleasant ladies in reception offered to make me a coffee from their machine. She then offered me the cheese board that they provide as room service to their staying guests. This was no ordinary cheese platter! Several varieties with fruits, flowers and a jelly all sourced locally. Served with thin crispy bread wafers. Amazingly delicious. So not only was i very grateful for the service, despite actually being closed, but the food was lovely.
- Suzy (10/5): Exceptional -
- Margarita (6/5): Pleasant - The location is great when you have car. Nature is beautiful. The architecture of the complex. The working staff was very friendly. there was a damp smell in the room, which was not successfully masked by the air freshener. strange solution for an eco hotel. It was our third location on the island( in this price category) and the breakfast was very weak. And it was not included, considering the price I don't think it's appropriate. It’s not 4 star hotel, and the price was too high for accommodation. the staff did not offer any entertainment, did not tell us about local special places (we have something to compare with, they showed us a lot in other hotels). But they were friendly.
- Jacqueline (10/5): - What an absolute dream of a space - inside and out! We loved every minute of our stay at Furnas Lake Forest Living. The location is a perfect home base for getting around the island, exploring hot springs, and hiking. There are several local hikes within walking distance or 5-10 mins driving. The decor is sleek and comfortable with lovely attention to detail. We also had breakfast and dinner at the restaurant which is a MUST-- the best food we had during our stay. We'd highly recommend Furnas and are eager to return as well.
- hollytS8870DL (10/5): Magical place run by wonderful people! - Myself (28) and my Dad stayed for 2 nights towards the end of our week on Sao Miguel. The location is incredible, a short walk from the lake, in the forrest and the grounds are filled with their own vegetable garden and animals. Our rooms were spacious, clean and had fantastic views. The owners and staff were incredibly kind and helpful and made us feel very welcome. The final shout out would be for the evening meal, which truly was delicious. I couldn't recommend more :)
- Cassandra (10/5): Exceptional - This is the most stunning location. The restaurant was incredible. I will dream about this breakfast for years to come!
- Magda (5/5): Passable -
- Josh (10/5): Exceptional -
- Tatiana (10/5): Magic escape to the nature and peaceful tranquility - Excellent place to get close to the nature and escape city noise. The room was in a detached house, private entry and own mini kitchen. We had a terrace facing the forest. The place is equipped with everything you need for a short stay. The breakfast was superb, a lot of dished cooked with local products. Excellent service and great experience. Recommending a chefs dinner at the restaurant, it was very sophisticated.
- Meghan (7/5): Beautiful scenery but not much more to offer - Staff was very friendly and scenery is beautiful. Although very beautiful, the property is quite isolated from any restaurants, stores etc. The restaurant on site is not open all days it is advertised (it wasn't open Thursday when we were there), the bar is also closed and there is no option to buy a snacks or food at all. When we asked the receptionist to help us place a take out order from a local restaurant, they said no. So I suggest you come prepared with meals ! The pool is not heated which makes it pretty useless during most of the year in Furnas.
Our room had ants in it which the staff did a good job of getting rid of and we didn't notice them the second night. The humidity makes the rooms smell damp/musty.
- Roark (10/5): Exceptional -
- amykH9184VW (10/5): Great basecamp for exploring Sao Miguel - Just returned from a six night stay. Highly recommend -- Great location, very welcoming and knowledgable staff, delicious food. Stayed three nights in an Oak Suite and three nights in a Cedar Villa. Both lovely.
- Lynda (7/5): Good - The hotel & the location was fabulous ! However quality - experience- price … didn’t match !
We had an apartment so apparently the breakfast is not included even though the price per night was the most expensive on the island ! Complementary fruit never existed despite the promise at arrival ! & we had to beg each morning for complimentary tea bags & coffee capsules !
I would recommend this hotel for the peacefulness & incredible setting but for a four star the price per night should be lower ! We tested 4 other hotels on the island & it was definitely over priced compared to what the others had to offer !
- benwI7183KZ (10/5): Best Reception in the world - The accomodations, restaurant and grounds are all beautiful. But, what really sets this please above others is the staff. Best reception desk in the world; helpful, courteous and accommodating - made us feel welcomed. Reception even offered a few minutes of spontaneous babysitting at their desk while we ate breakfast in the restaurant. The restaurant staff/chefs also phenomenal - they were a pleasure and very skilled - food was great.
Do yourself a favour and stay here!
- Lucile (8/5): Quiet nature stay in the center of Furnas - On the middle of the nature. Quiet. Comfortable cabins. Beautifully designed pool and restaurant. Delicious breakfast. Close to the main Caldeiras of the island. Price per night in high season is very high. Kitchen could be better equipped.
- Alina (6/5): Pleasant - Dinner at the restaurant was super delicious. Our room 24 was moist and smelled like mold. There is an automatic room refresher with a floral scent which did not really improve the situation.
- Faramarz (10/5): - Great place to stay!
- Bastiaan (9/5): Superb - Wonderful location, in the middle of the forest, close to beautiful lake, very peaceful. Nice breakfast, top class restaurant! Quite expensive for what you get, breakfast could be even more luxurious (e.g., salmon) for the price. Hotel should clean up the area behind where the animals stay, there was trash lying about
- Dennis (10/5): A small escape into the nature - Location and the friendliness of the staff
- Vicki (8/5): We had a wonderful time - The breakfast was great but expensive. The location was beautiful and serene. Our two rooms smelled like mold or mildew. There was a device that emitted a floral smell that was designed to mask the smell of the mildew (I assume) but it smelled worse than the mildew. Our bathroom window in 23 was hanging off one hinge and couldn't be opened and our coffee maker was broken. In unit 24 there was no coffee maker.
- TPoncet (8/5): Nice stay in the east of Sao Miguel - Nice place to stay on Sao Miguel, in the east part.
Cosy and comfortable villas, allowing to enjoy the quietness of the location.
The service was excellent, with the owner having waited for us until 2 AM, because of a delayed flight.
They also organized that we get the breakfast in the villas late in the evening, because of an early leave at 6 AM.
We enjoyed a dinner in their restaurant, and recommend to eat there.
Food was tasty and creative, which we really enjoyed at the end of stay in the Azores.
So, a nice experience.
Thanks to the "Furnas team".
- KathyTonore (10/5): Escape to Sao Miguel - My husband and I stayed 5 nights in one of the villas. We selected this hotel on the recommendation of our daughter who stayed here in 2022.
We loved the quiet roomy space the villas allowed us. We could spread out and relax as we used this area as a base camp for our explorations! The villa was very clean and the linens were high quality. We felt at home!
We had breakfast daily and dinner twice in the restaurant. A warm shout out to the waiters at dinner that were extremely knowledgeable and willing to help us select items we would enjoy !
Thank you to Mary Ann and Dione for your help making our stay perfect!
