- David (9/5): A comfortable stay in a great location. - Lovely house in a great location. Robert was an engaging and attentive host. Met with tea and cake on the verandah and an enjoyable breakfast with other guests
- Nancy (10/5): We would definitely stay here again and will recommend the Grand View House to anyone staying in Manapouri. - Our hosts went above and beyond to make our stay enjoyable. They were very friendly and helpful, even getting up very early to make sure we enjoyed a splendid breakfast before our early morning excursion. We arrived just after dark and it was a bit difficult to figure out where to park.
- Joan (9/5): Enjoyed our stay, yummy breakfast, would definitely recommend it. - Owners were lovely, accommodating and offered suggestions for our stay. Great location if doing a Doubtful Sound cruise from Manapouri, just a 7 minute walk to the dock. Loved staying in such a historic guest host.
- Günter (10/5): Perfekte Hospitality - Traumhafte Unterkunft
- Howard (8/5): Great Heritage house stay - A wonderful heritage house magnificently placed for Lake Manapouri and Doubtful Sound. Great views and full of character with highly convivial hosts. Everything worked but some of the furniture and facilities were reaching the end of their functional life!
The creaking wooden toilet seat was especially needing replacement
- Muriel (9/5): Un lieu très agréable et des hôtes très sympathiques et disponibles - La localisation et la vue depuis la maison, l’accueil et la disponibilité des hôtes Ras
- connolly (8/5): - Great home cooked breakfast. Quiet peaceful surrounds. Interesting history about the house itself and area.
- Deborah (10/5): Perfect hideaway in a prime location with excellent hosts. - Great hospitality and comfort, great location and historical interest. Leaving was so sad as such a unique place in such a beautiful setting. Carefully managed by Robert and Phillipa
- Kristine (10/5): Wish we had stayed longer. - Awesome stay and Robert and Phillips are so helpful and obliging. Haha, water pressure in the shower, but we think that is a work in progress!
- Deborah (9/5): Wish we could of stayed longer - We loved the history of the building and the fact that it has remained in the same family for over a hundred years. The views over Lake Manapouri are spectacular and the veranda is a great place to relax and regroup whilst taking in the scenery.
Very friendly host, welcoming and went above and beyond, nothing was too much trouble.
Would highly recommend!
- Dowdle (9/5): Beautiful location - Lovely breakfast they even accommodated our early departure
- Lisa (10/5): Definitely recommend this lovely, comfortable B&B. - We loved being guests at this charming, historic inn. Our hosts, Robert and Philippa, were wonderful. They provided wine, beer and snacks on the panoramic veranda upon our arrival and a delicious hot breakfast before our departure. The room was spacious and the beds were very comfortable, even had heated mattress pads. The location is perfect if you're visiting Manapouri.
- David (10/5): This was probably my favorite place to stay of the entire 3 week trip. - This is a great place to stay. It is a few miles from downtown Te Anau, but the drive is easy. Wonderful hosts and a great breakfast. Beautiful view of the mountains It was all great.
- Marcela (9/5): -

Tolle Aussicht! Nichts!
- Sharron (10/5): Two night stay and base for Doubtful Sound trip. - The family history and continuity, friendly and knowledgeable hosts Rob and Philippa, spacious comfortable room, nice linen and bed, lovely breakfast. Location and proximity to Doubtful Sound. ❣️😊
- Ella (8/5): Rob and his wife were wonderful hosts who managed all my dietary needs without batting an eyelid - Rob has a great sense - View from our bedroom, the old building, the old furniture, the history of the guesthouse, sitting with other people at breakfast I didn’t like the shower curtain and there was no where to put my toiletry bag except on the floor
- shenhav (10/5): - Perfect! Everything was perfect: the large room, the warm welcome, the hospitality, the excellent breakfast and the amazing view. place with history, place that has a unique story.
- susan (10/5): Wonderful place to stay in Manapouri - Delightful old family house with exceptional views. Close to beautiful walks on the lake. Great hosts and delicious cooked breakfast. Nothing
- Melissa (10/5): Just wonderful - We received a very warm welcome at this lovely & historic B&B. The hosts are wonderful.
Happy hour on the back deck. Incredible views. Beautiful breakfast home cooked and served in a beautifully decorated dining room on historic china. Just lovely. We wish we could have stayed longer. There was nothing to dislike.

- Caroline (10/5): Peaceful oasis with a stunning view - We loved the friendly hospitality of Robert and Philippa, the breakfast was delicious and they made us feel very welcome in their home. The drink on the terrace when we arrived was a lovely touch!
- Carolyn (10/5): Beautiful friendly very comfortable home - Beautiful house and lovely bedroom with wonderful view. Extremely delicious breakfast. Robert & Philippa very welcoming and helpful giving us ideas for our trip ahead. Perfect place to stay the night before our boat trip on Doubtful Sound. Nothing. It was perfect.

We had a very comfortable room and a yummy cooked brekky ready for a long day aahead Everything was wonderful
Danke. Überhaupt nichts.
- Harry (9/5): Superb -
- Philip (10/5): Robert and Philippa were excellent hosts and made our stay extremely comfortable. - First rate. Some items freshly baked and served hot, straight out of the oven. Nothing
- Peter (8/5): Very good - Beautiful house in a perfect location for our touring plans. The hospitality was great; our hosts were very friendly and couldn't do enough for us. Breakfast was lovely.
- Carmen (6/5): Pleasant -
- Andrew (10/5): A highlight of our trip to NZ!! - Absolutely everything about the stay was absolutely perfect - the hosts, the welcome tea, the room, the location, and the breakfast!!
- Deb (10/5): Wonderful stay - A gorgeous old house, full of history of the area and in a stunning location! A very warm welcome from the friendly hosts with comfortable, spacious room and excellent breakfast included. Easy walk to Pearl harbour for boat trips, to local pub and cafe and lovely walks. All was excellent
- Roland (9/5): Great hosts of a superbly located B&B - Warm and genuine welcome by the hosts, great location and lovely characterful house full of history
- Andrew (9/5): Superb -
- Rick (10/5): Amazing stay! You have to come here! - We liked everything about Murrells Grand View House! Okay, the shower water pressure was a bit weak, but the house was built in the 1880's! Rob and his wife were fantastic hosts and their family home is stunning. The breakfast was perfect. Rob took our order and Philippa prepared it and we dined with other guests, sharing stories about our travels.
We were taking a boat to Doubtful Sound for the overnight excursion and Rob and Philippa's place is perfectly situated. Rob said we could park our car with them overnight so we wouldn't have to worry about its safety. The walk to the harbor is about 300 feet so we're talking ultra convenient!
- Jerald (10/5): Exceptional - Loved the comfort and the
Location. Rob was great! Loved it!
- Chris (9/5): Warm Hospitality in a charming B&B - Marvellous location, warm and welcoming host, lovely room, spectacular view of the lake, good breakfast Insect screens on windows would have been nice
- Stephanie (10/5): Great - Lovely house with history. Owners very helpful and friendly
- Allan (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sue (8/5): Old world charm - good B&B but limited eating out options - The old world charm. V comfortable, clean and well furnished. Phillips was really helpful all the way through the booking process, particularly when we had a booking problem. Breakfasts were excellent and the hosts were always ready to offer wine and beer refreshments to order. The drawback is the lack of dining in Manapouri. We booked at the only eatery ( The Church) the first night, through the host and noticed it wasn’t full. But we thought we would support the Travelling Chippy the second night and go back to the Church if all else failed. The Church h was full and the Chippy never turned up so we had to do a 40km round trip for bread and cheese from the supermarket in TeAnau. Perhaps the hosts could consider offering a cold picnic box on these occasions?
- Erbee64 (8/5): Good 'old style' (in positive way!) B&B - We arrived rather late, and were happy we already had dinner before as there is not much to find in Manapouri. The hotel is hidden behind huge fences (trees!) and looks (and is) very old fashioned. We had a warm welcome and full explanation by Rob. The room and bathroom are ‘back into time’ but all was operational and clean. The acoustic isolation is not good, luckily our neighbours were not ‘loud’. Breakfast was served punctually, and was very good and all fresh. You should for sure try the home made muffin (Very good!!). I also asked for scramble eggs and coffee, but were served hot (is a long time ago I enjoyed real hot food in a hotel/B&B
- VEER (10/5): - Excellent bed and breakfast with lots of history and great hosts
- Esther (10/5): Perfect for a trip into the Doubtful Sound - Ideal location for a trip into the Doubtful Sound, just a 10 minute walk from Pearl Harbour - and with a great view over lake Manapouri. Robert organized the booking of the RealNZ trip for us, and Philippa made us a very early and most delicious breakfast with fresh berries, bacon and eggs in their lovely historic B&B. We had sunny weather, so we could even go for a refreshing swim in Lake Manapouri. The Church is a nice pub just around the corner and Te Anau, with more activities, shops and restaurants, is a 20 minute drive away. Thank you for sharing your beautiful home with us. A small fridge would be convenient, but Robert provided a box with cool packs.
One window with a net against mosqitoes/sandflies would be the cherry on top of the cake (but insect repellent was provided).
- nigsdigby (10/5): Classic hospitality with the Murrells - Fabulous breakfast, amazing hosts, we had incredible views from the garden room, & very helpful advice from Rob and Philippa. There’s a bookcase full of wonderful old stories, grab one to learn about the rich history of Manapouri - we can’t fault our stay!
- Heather (10/5): Exceptional -
- Anthony (10/5): Overnight stay, to enable a trip to Milford sound the next day - Lovely historic house, we were welcomed by Rob and very well looked after by him and his wife Phillipa. Food choices close by are a little bit limited. But the travelling chippy is very good and we would recommend it. Nothing
- Louis (10/5): - Excellent home, awesome personalized breakfast.
- Ann (9/5): Superb - Wonderful location, easy walk to beach, cafe. Close to departure and arrival jetty for the Doubtful Sound cruise. Rob was friendly and informative, and Philippa served a delicious breakfast
- J (10/5): very relaxing place, with a lot of great history + awesome hosts - Robert is an awesome host! The grounds are also exceptional. And it was So wonderfully quiet at night... cant think of anything
- Andrew (9/5): Superb - Er quaint great hosts
Nice to meet other guests chatting on the veranda Nothing
- Allison (10/5): A lovely place to stay - A lovely place to stay with lots of history and character. Comfortable rooms, great breakfast, pub with food across the road and only a short walk to the harbour for Doubtful Sound cruises. From the moment we were greeted by Rob and welcomed with tea and home made cake on the verandah this was a delightful stay. Nothing
- Brown (9/5): Wonderful home. Exceptional hosts - Being offered a home brewed beer on arrival. Shown around and explained a bit of the family history. Wonderful hosts. Nice breakie
- Brian (10/5): Lovely stay! - Great stay! Lovely historic building in a super location. Rob and Philippa were excellent hosts
- Lynn (10/5): - We had a lovely stay and wish we could have stayed longer:) Such a unique property steeped with history and our host Younger Bob is wonderful with genuine hospitality and passion for this place - it’s past- and their guests-Thank you!
- Anna (8/5): Very good -
- Meghana (10/5): Lovely comfortable stay in Manapouri - Awesome place and wonderful hosts! Super friendly and welcoming. Rob and his wife did such a great job and we enjoyed chatting with them. Breakfast was lovely and meeting fellow travelers was nice as well.
- Christoph (10/5): Lovely memories - Great and comfortable historic building and lovely hosts
- Sherpa801821 (10/5): Peaceful stay - We initially chose to stay here due to its peacefulness and location for the Doubtful Sound cruise, on our holiday travelling around South Island. Our hosts Philippa and Rob were both friendly and helpful, we mainly saw Rob who was very informative. The accommodation is delightfully traditional, with a wealth of character and the garden was full of colour from the many rhododendrons. There is a good view of Lake Manapouri from the rear decking. Our room was clean, spacious and comfortable. Being an old building it does not have modern upvc of the new builds, nor should it have. Breakfast were a combination of cold and cooked to order and these were delicious and filling. Close by there is a lovely lakeside walk that leads through woods to the harbour. We also went from here on a Doubtful Sound cruise and it was a 500 metre walk to the harbour. We very much enjoyed our time here and would definitely recommend staying here.
- Tamara (10/5): A charming lakeside home with stunning views, warm hospitality, delicious meals, and hosts who make the stay unforgettab - A beautiful grand old home just steps from the lake and within walking distance of the Church Pub. Stunning views, exceptional hospitality, and amazing hosts—Rob and Philippa. Philippa is a fantastic cook, and Rob’s sense of humour is sure to keep you smiling! -
- Nicola (10/5): Exceptional - Absolutely spectacular view of the mountains and the hospitality was lovely.
- Yinying (10/5): fantastic place with interesting history - we had a wonderful time at Murrells Grand View House, Robert was such a gracious host. no
- Matthew (10/5): History with a view - A cornerstone in Manapouri area tourism with comfortable rooms, great hosts, delicious breakfast in the most desirable location in town.
- Peter (10/5): Exceptional - Enjoyed my stay here thoroughly. Ideal location if you’re intending to go on a Doubtful Sound trip (as it’s a 2 minute drive round the corner). Hosts were very gracious and made you feel at ease in their property. Room was spacious and immaculate. Highly recommend this property!
- Stephen (9/5): Superb -
- Niall (10/5): Exceptional - An exceptionally friendly welcome and the finest view in the region from a family and house that have been welcoming visitors to Manapouri for generations. Our stay made the perfect base for a journey to Doubtful Sound.
- Fiona (10/5): Very comfortable property. Robert and Phillipa couldn’t have been more helpful - Lovely old colonial property. Full of history and wonderful hosts
- Mcconnell (10/5): Exceptional - Our hosts Rob and Phillipa were so welcoming, helpful and friendly.
Breakfast was wonderful with lots of home made items made from local produce.
The view from the property was incredible.
It's less than ten minutes walk to the departure point for Doubtful Sound so is ideal if you're going on this wonderful tour, it really should not be missed.
Local pub is two minutes from the property and is friendly, serves lovely food and nice beer. It's a very old property with plumbing to match! The shower wasn't very powerful.
A very, very minor issue but not one that should put anyone off.
We would return in a heartbeat and heartily recommend Rob and Phillipa's home to anyone.
- Lyndon (10/5): Exceptional -
- Janet (8/5): A quiet and historically interesting B&B with great views! - This historic B&B has a lovely garden and fabulous views over Lake Manapouri and the mountains. A substantial breakfast is included in the price and it is only a reasonably short (5-10 mins) walk down to the ferry for those (like us) travelling to Doubtful Sound. The suite we had was spacious, with plenty of room to have two suitcases open on the floor, and chairs to sit in while reading or checking email etc. There was also a wardrobe which was great as some places we stayed in during our NZ drip only had a tiny 'clothes rack' (a bit like a hat rack with 2 or 3 coat hangers available). There is also off street parking available on site. Having bug screens on the windows would have made it possible to have a flow of fresh air into our room (without fear of also allowing the sand flies in). We found it a bit warm at night to sleep because we couldn't have the window open. It was also very windy one night and the outdoor furniture rattled and banged all night keeping us awake (the old verandah is wonderful but the deck is uneven so the furniture rocked back and forth). We slept very well the second night of our stay.
- Kerbear3339 (10/5): Wonderful and cozy experience in a scenic location - This guest house was a wonderful stay and I was very comfortable. I received a warm welcome upon arrival by Philippa and she had given me a better room which had a beautiful window overlooking the lake. The room was spacious yet cozy and loved having tea served to me in my room. The breakfast in the mornings had the best croissants! Great space to walk down to the beach if you like to wander. The garden was lovely with all the blooming flowers. But the thoughtfulness was so kind. I decided to skip breakfast my last morning and ddiscovered they had made me a take away bag with fresh fruit and one of those amazing croissants for my drive that morning. I highly recommend staying and definitely plan to return! There was not one thing that I didnt like!
- Liz (10/5): Exceptional - This is a special place with so much history. It was the warmest welcome we received in New Zealand from our excellent hosts. This is an ideal place to stay for joining a boat trip to Doubtful Sound (5 minutes walk away) or a short drive to Te Anau. Watch out for the sandfly!
- Hazel (10/5): Exceptional - An historic place to stay- with great views and super breakfast. Nothing
- Georgina (9/5): Very memorable. The hosts were particularly kind - A grand old farm building with wonderful views. We appreciated the warm welcome, very well appointed rooms and top notch breakfast. We have no criticism
- Laura (10/5): Perfect stay for our adventures through the Fiordlands - Great breakfast, lovely couple, great communication, cute town and location. Very comfortable bed, quiet room. Beautiful location with views of the water and mountains.
- David (9/5): Delighted! - Rustic historic breakfast charming host lovely gardens Water pressure only moderate
- katherinepE1472RZ (10/5): Lovely old house in a great location for DoubtfulSound cruises. - A lovely old house, that has been kept true to its roots, with lovely views from the verandah and gardens. The room was spacious, clean and comfortable, and breakfast was excellent. Robert and Phillipa were helpful and knowledgable, with some interesting stories about the history of Roberts family and the house. Easy walk from the house to the pier for our Doubtful Sound trip. Apart from the Fish and chip shop, which isn't open every day, there is only one other restaurant in Manapouri, so get in early to ensure you get a table.
- Dennis (10/5): Fabulous view and lovely guest house. - Absolutely brilliant! Our room was comfortable and charming. The overall property is lovely and Rob our host couldn’t have been more helpful, breakfast was excellent. We really enjoyed our stay and recommend it to anyone. Thank you Rob.
- Janet (10/5): - Lovely relaxing place to stay
- Ludmilla (10/5): Exceptional - It is an historic house in a beautiful location overlooking the lake. The hosts were friendly and welcoming and the was breakfast sumptuous. I especially enjoyed a beer on the verandah shortly after we arrived. Nothing
- Malcolm (8/5): Perfect for Doubtful sound - Location was great, close to pearl harbour for boats. Lovely hosts. Great breakfast. WiFi was good. The property history. Water pressure in shower was a little low.
- Marilyn (10/5): A wonderful place to stay that ooses charm and simple beauty - We loved the location, the history behind its build and how the place remained in the family. Our hosts Robert and Phillipa were outstanding, they couldn’t have done more for us. Nothing negative to report
- Mark (10/5): - Rob was an excellent host and made our stay very enjoyable.
- Meander41765332873 (10/5): Wonderful experience - Great B&B experience. Philippa was an excellent host, serves a wonderful breakfast & very flexible with times etc. Philippa also gave us lots of information on sights / areas to visit in the location & at our next stop in Queenstown. Would highly recommend this B&B.
- Dalilah (10/5): Exceptional - The historic aspect of this house. Later on we saw the original pic of the house in the visitor center of Doubtful Sound.
Perfect location to spend the night before an early DS cruise. Very few dinner options in the area.
- Stefan (10/5): Exceptional - Stayed here spontaneously for a night in order to have a bit more time in the area, which turned out to be a great choice:
- our host Robert was very accommodating in general, we even got a free upgrade
- large and comfy room
