- Ian (10/5): Great stay - Great peaceful surroundings, fantastic breakfast by really nice friendly hosts.
- Paul (10/5): - Very friendly welcome and accommodating owners.
- Thomas (10/5): - Bartles Lodge is a gem of a hotel. It’s situated in a very peaceful and serene village, making it the perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle of day to day life.
The rooms are spacious, comfortable and cosy, offering all the amenities you’d expect and more. While subjective, I found the bed to be one of the most comfortable I’ve had in recent memory.
When it comes to breakfast, the spread on offer is fantastic: cereals, toast, pastries, chocolates, fruits and a selection of cooked offerings.
The wonderful owners go above and beyond to make you feel welcome and looked after; they couldn’t have done more to make us feel at home.
After living out of business hotels for the past two years, Bartles Lodge was a welcome breath of fresh air.
If I find myself needing lodging in the area again, I’ll be looking to book here.
- Pete (10/5): Thanks - Su is the perfect host and couldn't be more helpful
- Zak (10/5): - Sue was such a brilliant hostess and made us feel really home and food was amazing. Nothing was too much trouble.

- Verified traveler (10/5): Peaceful and relaxing stay. - We had a lovely stay at Bartles. The setting is wonderful, it is so peaceful and there are 3 fishing lakes in the grounds if you are into fishing. Ducks and hens run loose in the grounds. Sue, the owner, is so kind and helpful. It feels like you are a guest in someone's home rather than a hotel.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Not near the coast but Bartles Lodge offers a warm welcome, decent accommodation and a brilliant breakfast. Would recommend The Lodge at North Tuddenham for dinner.
- Heather (10/5): - We did not stay here to go fishing , we were attending a family wedding nearby, owners very friendly, rooms perfect breakfast food plentiful nothing is to much trouble, honesty bar in communal lounge, approx 5 miles to East Dereham.
- Emily (10/5): Lovely location and great stay - We stayed here as a couple for a night away. It's in a quaint and quiet village with beautiful surroundings. The host met us on arrival and was helpful and friendly. We had a lovely night's sleep. We enjoyed breakfast too!
- Christopher (10/5): Beautiful property with 3 lakes, lovely hosts - If you're looking for an 'almost middle of nowhere' experience but with a good location, Bartles lodge is a great place :) We stayed for 3 nights, and drove to various sites around Norfolk from Kings Lynn to Wells to Norwich, all within 40-ish mins or less.
There is ample parking out front. Our room was clean and cosy, with modern shower facilities. Even though we visited end of May it was a bit chilly, fortunately there was an electric heater as backup, and the central heating was turned on. Cooked breakfast to order is included, which we really enjoyed.
Richard and Su were great hosts, especially Su who went out of her way to have a chat with us every morning, as well as offering some guidance on places to see nearby. Also their flexibility with a later check-in on the first night was appreciated as we got stuck in M25 bank holiday traffic but called to let them know.
The village of Elsing is quaint and quiet, the 600+year old church just across the road is worth a visit, and there are lots of nice walks all around. The property itself is very picturesque, with three lakes and lots of ducks/geese, you could quite easily spend a day just there relaxing, or going fishing if that is your thing as the lakes had a lot of fish.
We would happily visit again!
- MARTIN (10/5): - A lovely property in beautiful grounds. The hosts Su and Paul were friendly and nothing was too much trouble. A nice touch was the honesty bar which was well stocked. Breakfast was lovely and more choice than most hotels. I would reccomend a stay to anyone. Thanks Martin and Glennis
- John (10/5): - We only stayed one night while visiting friends. The room was clean, warm and comfortable, breakfast was very good, and our hostess was very helpful and friendly. We visited in November, in the low season, and were the only guests. It will be a lovely peaceful retreat in the summer, but, beware, it is quite remote, with few nearby servcies. You certainly need a car.
- Loxley (10/5): Solo trip - Genuinely a lovely room, plenty of space, nice big bathroom and plenty of outdoor space.
The staff are wonderful and they helped with everything.
- Lasitha (10/5): Great place ! - We spent 3 nights at the Bartles Lodge and absolutely loved it. It was the ideal place for a peaceful holiday. The hosts were fantastic. They were very friendly and always helpful. The free breakfast was very enjoyable and once we tried the dinner and we were not disappointed. They have a bar which stocks beer, wine and soft drinks. Prices are comparable to supermarket prices. Grounds are great for a nice walks around the 3 lakes. Room was very comfortable and had everything we needed. We hope to make a return trip soon.
- Lee (10/5): Beautiful location and wonderful people - Bartles lodge is in a beautiful location, even though we don't fish. Food was wonderful and Sue and Paul were brilliant hosts. Thank you and we look forward to staying there again
- Rebecca (10/5): - Su and Paul are fabulous hosts, they were very welcoming and helpful, the property is spacious and breakfast was delicious. Everything you need is there and the lounge with honesty bar is a great addition. 10/10 for our short stay
- Gary (8/5): -
Relaxing . Nice walks .
- Jo-Anne (10/5): - Bartles Lodge was a perfect find for us. Convenient for our Norfolk overnight stay. Su was a very welcoming host and ensured we knew where to go for breakfast explaining times and the request to complete the cooked breakfast form the evening before. We had booked two rooms and both were very clean and comfortable. The bed linen and towels were good quality. The breakfast was exceptional and included steak in place of bacon. The honesty bar and evening food option were great facilities - if we had stayed longer these would have been used. The grounds and lakes also looked lovely but we didn’t have time to walk around.
- Trevor (10/5): - Everything was just perfect!
- Louise (10/5): Comfortable and quiet with great service - Lovely place, would definitely stay again. The hosts were so welcoming. Spotlessly clean, good sized room, comfortable bed and beautiful grounds. The breakfast was great too, perfectly cooked fresh eggs!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Lovely and clean nice breakfast fresh eggs no bacon
- Julien (10/5): - A very good clean b & b. Lovely owners. In very cold weather it was lovely and warm in the room which was simple but clean and comfortable.
- LOUISE (8/5): Out in the sticks hotel but nice - Hotel was out in stick just take it very slow down lanes
Room was large and separate bathroom
Individual rooms locked by own front door
Bed was comfortable and warm, tea and coffee supplied
Bedroom was cold as no heating on in room
Bathroom was clean but cold no heating on
But owner supplied heater to warm up rooms but bathroom was still a bit cold
No dinner food on site but owners did offer a menu and did cook me my tea and food was nice
Open and honest bar supplied which was nice
Order on evening breakfast short and limited breakfast menu but food was nice
So all in all stay was ok but rooms were cold but did supply heater
- James (10/5): Exactly what I needed! - Really helpful and accommodating staff, fantastic rooms, well laid out, easy to park, good wifi.
- Lauren (10/5): - Nice room with everything we needed. Beds were comfortable, powerful shower and reliable wi-fi. The couple who run it were friendly and welcoming and we got to feed their pet duck, Donald.
- Sandra (10/5): Pleasant stay - We loved our stay . It was so quiet . Walking around the lake before retiring was so peaceful . Friendly owners . Lovely breakfast .. too much choice was spoilt .
- John (10/5): - Beautiful surroundings in a lovely quiet village . Hosts were very welcoming and friendly and facilities were great . The en-suite double room we had was like having your own little bedsit . TV , settee and large comfy bed . Grounds to the property were lovely with lots of trees and fishing ponds . We only stared for one night but it was spot on . I think if we had stayed any longer we would not have wanted to go home .
- Steve (10/5): Weekend Family Visit - Fantastic stay in a great lodge. Room is large and very comfortable with huge en-suite. Breakfast is a hearty combination of continental and full English with a twist and not to be missed. Although a lodge mainly for those fishing it has beautiful countryside around and is close to Dereham and main routes to Norwich so a good place to stay for weekends and short breaks. Staff were so friendly on phone and in person so very much recommended and nothing negative to say.
- Louisa (10/5): Relaxing hideaway - Surrounded by countryside, hearing ducks and owls, its the perfect place to relax.
The room was clean and spacious for 2, the seats in the room were comfy with tea, coffee and hot choc available in the room.
Theres a lounge area that anyone can use with some books, leaflets for local things to do and an honesty bar. The breakfast room is so spacious that you have your own table and space around it. There's a great selection of cereals, bars, muffins, pastries etc, help yourself to toast and they'll take your cooked food order at the table.
Its in a great location for exploring Norfolk and there are some lovely local pubs for evening meals.
- Nick (10/5): - The hosts couldn’t have been more welcoming and helpful and the breakfast each day was great. Lovely quiet location.
- Brian (10/5): - Nice common sitting room with a honesty bar
- John (10/5): Very nice - Very welcoming. Lovely room. Tasty breakfast.
It says free wifi, but we did not know this and didn't even have a signal on my phone.
- Mr George (8/5): - If you want peace and quiet and no interpretation from mobile phone. This is the place for you. I would advice to take laptop so you can order from 'Just Eat' online with card. Don’t expect bars on phone. Internet is good. Beautiful place.
- paul (10/5): superb - the room was well appointed with plenty of tea and coffee the breakfast was great i loved the variety on offer on the breakfast buffet. the next time i am in norfolk i will book at bartles lodge.
- Patricia (10/5): - Very nice stay with lovely hosts many thanks
- Kathryn (10/5): Peaceful Haven - Bartles Lodge is the perfect place to stay for a peaceful relaxing break. Our room was delightful, with a comfortable king sized bed, sofa, plenty of storage space and a lovely walk in shower. The excellent tea/coffee supplies were replenished daily including drinking chocolate, biscuits and plenty of milk. Breakfast was perfect-cold buffet items and a freshly cooked full english. The grounds were lovely to stroll around or to sit under a willow tree with a good book. The hosts were charming and very helpful. I would definately recommend staying here if you are visiting Norfolk.
- Derek (10/5): - If you want a quiet out of the way place in the countryside, this is it. The owners are very nice and the rooms are clean and comfortable. Lovely breakfasts
- Deborah (10/5): Stay here! - Lovely spacious room with great view of lakes. Great night sleep in comfortable bed. Very welcoming and helpful hosts. Everything provided for a comfortable stay. Very good breakfast. Highly recommend.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - A beautiful, tranquil ‘hidden away’ setting.
Run by a delightful helpful couple.
Would return!
- Rachel (8/5): Lovely location - Lovely location with spacious, pleasant, clean rooms in an 'independent' layout, and attentive hosts. Peaceful, quiet spot, and the view outside the room window was relaxing and not overlooked. Don't rely on Hotels.com to pass on the details of when you expect to arrive (I was arriving late and the information I'd put into Hotels.com hadn't been received by the hosts). The bed I slept in was very firm. There is an eye to environmental concerns, which is rather undone by the individual plastic-wrapped portions of products (tricky to get the balance in these 'covid' times I realise). Please could you review the tea bags that you use? The mint tea didn't taste of mint at all, and the tea in the rooms didn't make for a refreshing cuppa which I really needed at the end of a long day and lengthy drive. Thank you for your hospitality.
- Kevin (8/5): - The room was nice and clean. I would have put excellent but for the fact the radiators were not on. The couple that run this place are very hospitable and go the extra mile to make your stay very comfortable
- Gwyn (8/5): - Nice people, good stay, breakfast was a little unusual.
- Eleanor (10/5): Stay 21-23.8.20. - Su and Paul were very welcoming and made us feel at home. They were very kind towards my mother-in-law who is vulnerable due to a health condition; they checked she was okay and looked out for her. Breakfast was delicious and had an excellent choice of menu items. The rooms were comfortable, the shower lovely, the setting very relaxing and a very nice atmosphere. Su and Paul were very helpful, and we would stay here again.
- Marion (10/5): - Very quiet. Beautiful Green environment and Fish ponds outside. Good food. Friendly chat.
- James (4/5): WiFi does not work in rooms. - WiFi does not work in room and had booked hotel which advertised WiFi I’m order to be able to work. Would not have booked this hotel had I been aware of the lack of WiFi. Only stayed one night out of two I’d booked because of this.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - When we arrived we were met by Sue and shown the bar and dining room And our room - we arrived in the dark so this was helpful
We initially thought the decor of the room (Room 3) was a bit dated however the bed was Large, extremely comfortable with white cotton sheets and extra blankets and pillows available
The room was warm and clean
Bathroom clean and shower worked well
Lovely outlook over the lakes with the ducks and moorhens
Good breakfast
Sue was Very kind and cooked my boiled eggs twice just to make sure they were right - really couldn’t do enough for us - Thankyou
- Christopher (10/5): - My Son and I were only at Bartles for 2 days for the fishing,{excellent}.The owners were very friendly and accomodating. Room very clean . good facilities. The breakfast that we had both days was exceptional. Would highly recommend Bartles Lodge for all groups of Travellers.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The location was perfect providing peace and quiet.
- Christina (10/5): - We had a lovely weekend in bartles the hosts were so friendly and made us all feel very welcome, Breakfast was lovely the rooms and settings are fabulous
- Verified traveler (10/5): - very welcoming hosts. lovely, quiet area but easy drive to lots of places round about. comfortable, clean rooms. Unfortunately no wifi all the time we were there but wouldn't put us off going there again
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The owner, Sue, who was very helpful and kind. Paul, for cooking us
some lovely breakfasts. Great to be able to look out of your bedroom
window and see the ducks sunning themselves outside your window.
- Martin (10/5): Weekend at Bartles Lodge - We stayed here for the weekend with my daughter/ partner and son /wife . The rooms were lovely.
The setting was brilliant with ducks and ducklings in the courtyard and on the ponds . The service was outstanding and breakfast was superb. I would recommend that anyone wishing to stay near Norwich to stay here .The Mermaid pub next door did fabulous food . I look forward to revisiting Bartles Lodge again
- Nigel (10/5): - It was a fantastic place to stay. Very relaxing and staff are the best and will do anything to help.
- Shirl (10/5): - Every thing you could want for a stay over night as we did. Got no complaints at all
- Verified traveler (8/5): - breakfast was excellent hosts ere delightful and setting great
- Richard (10/5): - Very friendly welcome from Sue and Paul.We enjoyed our brief stay there and the surroundings are beautiful.
There is a glorious unspoilt old Norfolk Church across the road.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - I loved the beautiful location and wildlife right outside my window, and the nice pub next door!!
- david (10/5): - Friendly and welcoming
- Verified traveler (10/5): - So quiet and peaceful. A beautiful setting looking over a lake

- RICHARD (10/5): Gem of a place - one of the most pleasant and tranquil place i have ever stayed and the owners can not enough for you
you will not be disappointed .And a great breakfast too and the pub next door serves great food and a nice pint
- Mrs Sandra (8/5): Nice spot for a quick stay - Clean quiet comfortable. nice breakfast. Nice welcome.
- K&M (10/5): Nice stay - Quiet and peaceful in lovely surroundings. Hard to find and no phone signal at all although they do have WiFi. Breakfast was great but only a 45min time option so fine for early risers. Dog friendly which was good for us and overall a pleasant stay.
- Sharon (10/5): Lovely b & b - Had a fabulous stay here. Friendly hosts and great breakfasts
- Sharon (10/5): Fantastic stay - It was better than amazing.
- Jan (4/5): B&B - Small, basic bedroom but with a beautiful en suite. Room not very warm, even when the heating eventually came on. Lovely view from window across the lake. Neither of us could work out how to turn the shower on and felt this should have been explained, so had to leave without using it !! A very pleasant breakfast room and a lovely cooked breakfast.
Basically, the room itself being very basic, was a disappointment.
- Neil (10/5): Lovely country hotel - Lovely hotel but poor phone reception
- David (8/5): quiet and peaceful - the lodge is situated in countryside and suited my needs more than adequately. The proprietor and staff couldn't have been more helpful. Evening meals at the Mermaid pub next door were always excellent. Room was warm, clean, comfortable and reasonably priced.
Some may regard it as a little isolated but as it caters mainly for keen anglers in the season that is to be expected. We were visiting my brother and his wife who live a few miles away, as they are in poor health we decided a hotel would be better for us to stay in and see them during the day. As we live in a busy conurbation where the traffic never stops the and everything woks 24/7 we just wanted somewhere away from all that an Bartles Lodge suited us down to the ground.
- fran&jim (10/5): Peaceful - If you want a quiet peaceful few days away from the hustle & bustle here’s the place to stay good breakfasts owner is very obliging and friendly
- Alison (10/5): Perfect for after a wedding! - Lovely room and a yummy breakfast.
- Jules (10/5): Dog-friendly, lovely setting. - Nice warm welcome, good sized, quiet room with easy access to take dogs out late/early.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Lovely peaceful setting and warm friendly people. Would stay again.
- Barbara (8/5): Quiet hotel in the country - Rooms are separate around a courtyard. Comfortable and quiet. Bar, dining room and lounge are central and welcoming. Large grounds with fishing lakes. No mobile phone service.
- Jeff (8/5): - Interesting lodgings focused perhaps on the fishing community, which would explain the unusually early breakfast on a a sunday morning. Nice grounds with fishing ponds and very much out of the way.
- Grant (10/5): - Lovely weather always helps but very attractive setting and perfect as a base to visit all the sites of Norfolk/Suffolk. Good size rooms.
- Christine (10/5): - Great accommodation in beautiful surroundings. Hotelier helpful, welcoming and very personable. Will definitely go back
- Peter (8/5): Very nice Peaceful place - Very nice quiet place to stay, only noise that could be heard were the birds. No mobile phone signal, poor / no wifi signal in bedrooms.
