Guest Reviews
- Hemingway (3/5): Avoid - Nothing Cold damp dirty
- Tim (8/5): - Very close to centre of Ripon. Ripon Cathedral was in 10 mins walk
Attractive old pub building.
Friendly and helpful staff.
Room had been recently redecorated in minamilist functional style
Bathroom had been recently updated with generous size shower enclosure.
Evening meal in Thai restaurant on ground floor provided an enjoyable experience without having to.leave the building Small car park at back of pub could do with a sign on the street running up the side of the pub to guide travellers arriving by car.
Had trouble getting through to get guidance by phone to reach destination.
Outside of Window in room needed washing.
Bathroom had surprisingly noisey ventilation fan..
- Jonathon (8/5): Spot on. - Comfy bed, good spacious shower and a great pint of Guinness Nothing really. Good value room to get your head down in after cycling over the Yorkshire Dales in pouring rain.
- Victoria (6/5): A great location with nice people but could use some work in the rooms. - The location was great. The new Thai restaurant arrangement was good. Our room was less than average. There were marks on the wall, the shower had a botched job makeover and the curtains looked like they had seen better days.

- Helen (3/5): -
- Philip (8/5): A great spot in a lovely city the one night we needed - Although breakfast was not available the adjoining thai restaurant was busy, and the pub was friendly. Room is bright and recently renovated, and spacious. No wifi available although staff did try to make it work.
- Taylor (7/5): -
- Abi (10/5): Excellent - Beds were very comfy and staff were friendly. Room was clean and spacious.
- Barbara (5/5): It was cheap but not good - Nothing
- Andrew Scarisbrick (8/5): - Excellent location, a few minutes walk to the city centre. Wobbly toilet seat. Stain on the room carpet covered by a rug.
- Kate (6/5): -
- Steve (10/5): Superb location staff and accommodation, will be back - Outstanding staff and location Absolutely nothing
- Chapman (9/5): -
- Sibley (7/5): -
- David (10/5): Perfect racing weekend away. - Excellent location, clean and tidy. Food was first class and staff and locals very friendly. Nothing
- Steven (1/5): - Niets Alles
- Wyllie (10/5): - Everything the size if the room everything Nothing
- Keith (3/5): - Going into town & finding a cafe which actually had hot water in their bathroon/ Toilet. The mould in the room..
the bathroom lights mirror that didn't work & the main
Fitting lamp which was on the way out & was only dim.. The room which looked absolutely nothing like the room pictures..
A shocking room for a shocking price..
Please avoid at all costs..
- Ayodotun (6/5): - No
- Tweddell (6/5): -
- John (4/5): It was a disappointing experience. - I didn’t have breakfast It was cold. An electric heater was provided.
The TV didn’t work. The room was very cramped.
- Bethan (8/5): - Staff, totally fantastic! Polite, considerate and accommodating. Couldn't have hoped for nicer hosts for my stay. My room was comfortable and had all that I needed for my short stay. Heated radiator in bathroom didn't seem to work. A boiler or heating noise seemed to be activated at regular intervals throughout the night.
- Mitchell (6/5): -
- Nick (10/5): Very enjoyable stay which met our needs. - Great value.
Great location.
Friendly staff.
- Debbie (8/5): Everything I needed, comfortable bolt hole - Was central to Ripon and only 10 min from my main destination
Parking on site
Basic room but very clean and lovely shower!!!!
I had everything I needed for a comfortable stay
Staff fantastic and genuinely interested in my accompanying dogs. Locals were great and chatty , felt safe as a solo visitor Just needed a few pictures on wall to make it homely BUT not essential !!!
- Malcolm (7/5): -
- Jon (9/5): Back at the White Horse - I've stayed here previously, but this was my first time in the main pub building, rather than what I think are the converted stables across the courtyard.
The chap who checked me in was cheerful, friendly, GSOH. Explained everything I needed to know for my stay.
I had a single ensuite room. It was clean & cozy enough. Bathroom also was clean. Bed: comfortable.
As previously, I enjoyed my stay, & will most likely revisit at some point when I'm visiting friends & family in the area. Nothing
- Tony (5/5): Good value and reception but please sort out the water problem. - Price, staff and closeness to city. Hot water not available from basin tap and shower hot/cold water control too unpredictable.
- Bryan (5/5): -
- Stephen (8/5): COMFORTABLE CENTRAL CITY LOCATION - WE HAVE STAYED AT THE PROPERTY BEFORE AND IT IS NOW UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT. THEY ARE JUST GETTING THEIR FEET UNDER THE TABLE AND BREAKFAST WAS NOT AVAILABLE BUT THEY CORDIALLY INVITED US TO JOIN IN THE FREE FOOD AFTER PUB EVENTS. A PLEASANT VIBE. FINE FOR US
- Schofield (4/5): - nothing We had to ask for another room the one we got was dark, cold and smelt of damp, the 2nd room was a bit better but still not worth what we paid to stay.
- david (8/5): Pleasant stay - It was close to the town and shops, staff was helpful. It was a bit small the room but not that bad.
- Emily (8/5): Great, friendly staff! - Very friendly and accommodating team, from the bar staff in the evening to the cleaning staff in the morning. We were cycling and they allowed us to store our bikes in a safe space indoors. The accommodation was very clean. A bit old and tired but very good value for money and all we needed for our stay :) Unfortunately the wifi didn't seem to work but we didn't actually ask about it so perhaps there was a solution to it
- Derek (6/5): I think OYO need to give this place some tlc, then I'd be back - Very helpful and pleasant staff . Clean room and comfortable bed. Convenient location. No breakfast or meals available. Rather tired building. No hot water apart from shower. room had a tired feel, but very clean.
- Natalie (8/5): - Although rooms are small you have everything you need for a one night stay. Would book again.
- Gordon (6/5): - very central, but quiet.
- lynn (3/5): - The staff member I sore was very helpful as the pub was shut and did not open on a Monday which did not state Nothing really it was a very small room as the twin bed rooms where located on the 3rd floor with a lot of steps when I had asked for a low level room a staff member the only one working showed me three ground floor rooms in the stable yard which was much better
- Andrew (9/5): - Very good service, I booked on day of arrival, got upgraded as the room was on 3rd floor and I have older dog, very grateful to get room on ground floor, great staff and great place for a beer Nothing really
- Christopher (10/5): Super friendly staff and a very comfortable stay - The property is located in the heart of ripon with a minuets walk into the centre and very close to the cathedral. The team and Sam are very welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. With off road parking a great place to stay in ripon. I will definitely recommend The White Horse.
- azizpour (8/5): She has a good manager. -
- Chapman (8/5): Fun and fab, very comfy beds and great hospitality. - We didn't have breakfast, location excellent. staff amazing and made us feel so welcome. We had a great time with them and were so well looked after. More parking, ended up with a ticket as i didn't realise there was restricted parking if you can't get on the carpark. maybe let visitors know so we could have parked somewhere else.
- Chris (5/5): Ok but WiFi did not work - Budget property People friendly
- peter (7/5): - Location Parking facilities
- Spink (10/5): -
- Linda (5/5): It will be good once it is up and running again properly as have used it a lot over the past 15 yrs. - Location was fine for us. However, very disappointing that there were no kitchen facilities, therefore no evening meal or breakfast that we have had in the past. I will say the bed linen and towels were excellent. Having to leave the premises to eat as hadn’t expected too! There was no heating apart from a plug in electric heater. One of the rooms had no cold tap working. Another with bed springs protruding and pillows weren’t so good.
- David (4/5): The lady behind the bar was very helpful ,but if you want teturn custom sort ou you rooms.t - Not availableThe rooms needs a totall make over , there was only tea available no coffee , no flavoured teas . I think this has been answered.
- Beverley (1/5): - The rooms were nice but the stay was -10. The place advertised open 12/02.00am. When we got back at 9.30 pm it was all in darkness and never open. It stated they did evening meals but it wasn’t open. When we checked out at 10.30 there wasn’t a member of staff anywhere. We had to leave the back door of the property open and leave the key on the window sill. Will never stay again or recommend it to anyone else Anything
- Emma (1/5): Awful - The staff were lovely. When entering the pub to check in from the rear it stunk of urine. We went to our room and it was old, tired, stunk and was filthy. There was chipped paint, the bed base was filthy and ripped, the toilet didn’t flush properly, there were old dried up air fresheners dotted about the place, the shower was dirty around the outlet and I didn’t dare use it. One radiator was hanging off the wall and there was a stand alone plug in radiator we didn’t bother plugging in. The tea and coffee and kettle were on a tiny shelf and the bedside cabinets were worn and scratched. There was also mould. It’s a shame because it could be lovely and it’s in a great area!
- Pauline (2/5): - No heating was the biggest problem
- Phil (7/5): - I payed twice and you said they would not give me any money when i know you didnt contact them. I know the owner there. You owe me £65. Con artist you lot.
- Samh (7/5): - Clean, comfortable bed, quiet, large sized bathroom, hot water, friendly staff etc. Room was incredibly hot at night - could do with a fan of some sort.
- Helen (7/5): A great place to visit - so convenient and was very good value for money - Great location, and we could leave the car whilst we walked and explored the town and countryside around, without charge in your car park The day was really hot and we couldn't find out how to turn off the bathroom radiator. We asked if it could be turned off later in the evening but it didn't seem fair to get the owner out so late at night. The bathroom door could be closed so it didn't disturb our sleep, but you are wasting money keeping it on when it such a very very hot night already
- Jo (8/5): -
- F (1/5): It was booked for my husbands birthday, what a wash out and i blame both companies - location was okay The accommodation was unfit for habitation, there was a terrible smell of foul drains which permeated a small cabin like space and on top of that was damp odour. It was so bad i could not have slept throughout the night. I have asthma and considered this to be a real health hazard. We lasted in the room, that was tiny - one person had to move so the other could pass, 10 minutes and then left. It also stated 2pm check-in on the site of Booking .com, on a arrival a note was taped to the door saying this had now changed to 3pm and a phone number to contact. Rang it several times because it was raining on arrival but no one answered. I have since tried to get reimbursed and still have not succeeded, the Hotel says Booking.com has to deal with it and they have sent a couple of emails saying it was being dealt with and have heard nothing since other than to say i have an £8 credit voucher. Oh! and a reminder to leave a review, so here you have it. Good luck!
- Jon (8/5): Overall would book again but need to sort issues highlighted above. - Wi-Fi signal didn't reach room provided. A competent IT person should be able to fix this ....either/or a signal booster, more central positioning of existing router or more powerful router.
Also mattress not great.
- Tim (5/5): Reasonable. Clean. Ok for an overnight stay. - Room location away from street noise and the public house. Shower in need of attention. No food availability on site.
- Andy Jon (5/5): Price reflected the quality of the stay - It was what it was, the staff had been friendly and very nice. Good for having a dog and walking distance to places to visit
- Arshad (5/5): Makes me want to book at a Travelodge next time - A B&B that doesnt serve breakfast is certainly a novel take. Spiders in room, insufficient parking, small bed, no breakfast.
- Charlotte (7/5): -
- ANGELA (10/5): Comfortable overnight stay, friendly host - Location central for everything . Single bed en suite perfect for single traveller. Welcoming host. No breakfast but reflected in the price so didn’t matter. Plenty of places to eat in town.
- Nigel (1/5): N/A - N/A couldn’t get hold of anyone at the hotel to be able to book in The lack of customer service and lack of communication
- vilma (5/5): pain in the ass - place was okay i couldnt shower as the room had just been tiled so it was out of order which wasnt good for me as i needed to wash and couldnt
- Jayne (8/5): - The accommodation was as we expected it to be for the price we paid. It was clean, tidy and in a good location
- rosie (7/5): - Its 5 minutes away from my daughter The pub was closed 28th and 29th
- Parlett (10/5): It was perfect for the purpose of our trip to Ripon - Ideally located and easily accessible.Like the annex style of accommodation
- Abbie (2/5): Will not book again. - Close to central ripon as we were visiting family. The bathroom absolutely stunk of foist, the toilet didn’t flush properly. Very out dated.
- Richard (7/5): Very nice place and welcoming staff - Good value. Nothing.
- Nicola (4/5): Bit shabby, cold water tap not working in room which was not ideal -
- Judith (6/5): - Ripon The room was cold on arrival, there was a hole in the blinds, cigarette butt's outside the door in the courtyard and the bar was closed.
- david (1/5): Don't -
- Antoinette (10/5): - The stafe were the best so friendly lovely warm welcome many thank I liked everything
- Elijah (9/5): It was a sweet wonderful short stay . - The room I had was very spacious, clean and tidy. Being winter time in the north, there was sufficient heating. Failed to figure out how to open the bathroom window for some bit of aeration.
- anthony (8/5): -
- jen (1/5): - Nothing! Couldn't even get into the place. In darkness & all locked up upon our arrival!!!! We had to find & pay for more expensive alternate accommodation. The Royal Oak spot on. Go there people. OYO response or rather lack of when I phoned them. Completely useless. My advice to booking.com is to write this shambles of a company . Don't book OYO properties. I must say booking.com have promised me full refund...Still waiting for it???
- Jonathen (3/5): Not value for money! - Good location for visiting Ripon for our works Christmas party. The cleanliness in the bedroom was poor and needs reviewing with your housekeeping team.
The radiator in the bedroom is working and requires replacing.
No breakfast available due to the kitchen being poorly, please display this on your website for future guests.
- Catherine (5/5): Convenient central and very quiet - Location central but quiet In the midst of decorating and a bit dated
- Colin (6/5): - Location The room was cold.
- Caroline (1/5): Avoid at all costs - impossible to get any help with anything online or on the phone! - Really really bad customer service. Automated responses saying the same thing over and over and not helping me in any way. Passing me to Booking.com. I phoned 2 different numbers & had around 10 emails over a day, back and forth. Got absolutely nowhere. Will avoid at all costs. The really bad call centre in India and automated responses. Nothing personal and no help whatsoever
- john (3/5): - bed comforable stayed last year, now no breakfast provided, room dated, shower just a drip
- zoe (6/5): okay for an overnight stay but wouldn't have wanted to stay longer - Staff were very friendly and welcoming and luckily we were able to park on the premises as that was one one the main reasons we chose the hotel as well as proximity to the town. The room was very drab and in need of decoration ( holes had been filled-in on the walls and were not painted over ), and the mattress on the double bed was poor not offering much support, and we would have liked to have had breakfast, but unfortunately that wasn't as option, which to be fair we were aware of before booking.
- Amy (3/5): - Good location, friendly and helpful staff. The room smelt really bad. So musty. It's a dog friendly place which is fine but it certainly did smell. We had to ask the lady for some air freshener which she nicely gave us and apologised for. But it didn't make a difference. I think if my partner and I weren't so laid back, any other couple would have moved elsewhere.
- Connor (8/5): -
- david (6/5): - Comfortable bed. No breakfast, draft from window.
- Childers (10/5): Wonderful. - The structure very familiar to Michigan properties. Alarm went off when I was doing something personal thought it was prime minister being a wanker.
- Nigel (5/5): -
- Shellie (5/5): Overpriced budget accommodation. - Location was good No parking on site as taken already, no towels in the room, radiator in bathroom and bedroom not working. Up 2 flights of stairs with no lift.
- Jean (10/5): Very Central at the White Horse Ripon - room nice and warm bed very comfy - nice pub lovely landlady Sam !!
very central to eateries, pubs, some nice shops too nothing
- Sean (5/5): -
- susan (7/5): - Cheap and conveniently located. Booking.com charged me extra for parking and hi speed WiFi. Neither of these exist at this property. This is mis-selling.
- Jenny (5/5): - Very close to city centre That the pub doesn't do any food. Breakfast at this place used to be fantastic.
The bar also closes far to early.
- jacqueline (10/5): Excellent place to stay comfortable and located very close to town - Location Nothing
- Jeffrey (7/5): -
- Gareth (9/5): Excellent stay with very friendly staff . Brilliant for a weekend stay and very dog friendly - Very close to town and lots of amenities The room could have done with a window
- Mark (8/5): Fine for those on a budget - Cheap and close to centre of town Lack of parking availability despite it being stated on the advert that a parking space was included. Did not see a single member of staff during my stay but the person I spoke to on the phone to be able to enter was friendly and informative.
- Dales lass (10/5): -
- adrian (8/5): Would stay again - Location 5 minute walk in to the town centre Cups in room had tea/ coffee left in them , had fresh ones then realised there wasn’t any tea bags either but nobody about so had to go to the garage and buy some 😔
- Michael (8/5): -
- Jane (1/5): This room was in desperate need of total renovation and therefore overpriced. - The location was good for town. The bathroom was unpleasant with a poor shower and damaged lino. There was a large dent in the bedroom wall that looked as if someone had punched it in anger; the mattress was uncomfortable and we didn't want to take our shoes off as the carpet looked unpleasant as well.
