Guest Reviews
- Rob (6/5): - Good one night stop over
- Andrew (6/5): Southwell stay - Room small, young man helpful, but having to do bar and guest reception, personally could not log on to Wi-Fi and Tv came on super loud and controls did not work. There was a trick to keeping the bathroom door to shut. Full of history though and nice pint of hobgoblin. Benifits, the marvellous Cathedral virtually next door.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - I was really looking forward to staying here but unfortunately the room had no hot water in the shower, no shower gels provided the only thing was an antibacterial handwash liquid which was quarter full. The bathroom sink was very dirty and could smell the drain. Limited selection of tea and coffee and the room looked tired no had a good clean. It was very noisy but that was to be expected as it was in the town.
- Catriona (6/5): Honest review - Aug 2024 - At check-in, my sister was given the keys to a different booking, in addition to our own. We booked through Hotels.com and another guest with a similar name had a separate booking. Instead of charging the card on file with my booking, my sister was charged for both rooms at check-in because she happened to arrive before me.
The room with three single beds wasn't ideal, it was on the top floor and the lock on the door was faulty so we were too scared to lock it overnight in case there was a fire and we needed out quickly. I made a staff member aware of this concern. The room itself was fine except the windows were painted shut so didn't open, and the bathroom required an overhaul - the showerhead fell off it's bracket when I tried to bring it towards me rather than it facing the wall. A few times throughout the night it sounded as though the tap in the sink was being turned on at full blast, but I presume it might have been neighbours flushing their toilet, but it disturbed what was already a poor night's sleep due to the unlocked door, and feeling vulnerable.
The housekeeper kindly changed our room in the morning to a much nicer room, the bathroom was an improvement and the windows opened. It was still very hot & stuffy, fans were provided in both rooms, but sadly had little effect.
The housekeeper was very kind, but sadly this does not take away the safety element and had we locked our door on the first night, would we have been able to get out again?....
- Paul (10/5): Nice stay - Friendly place to stay
- Mark (10/5): - Comfortable and friendly
- Roger (6/5): - The pub was a perfect location for the venue we were visiting only 10 mins by car. The room was clean and tidy and was perfect for our one night stay, Thank you
- Tom (8/5): - Nice staff and clean. But the room was not that nice. The area around was grate
- Verified traveler (4/5): Nice welcome - really not a nice room for £200 - Arrived in the middle of karaoke session that finished at midnight . That was find as the room was in the top floor. But the street noise of drunken people was ongoing.
The worst though was the smell
Of human urine in the room. Really strong. Had to put towels down to dampen it out. And what’s worse is the extra fee for bringing a pet. When the normal
Fee doesn’t cover cleaning up after people!
- Michael (8/5): Nice stay - Nice size room ,good quality bedding and bed ,very clean
- Peter (8/5): Happy - what it says on the tin….. lovely locals, helpful landlady…
- STEPHEN (8/5): - Grade listed building with good rooms and facilities outside.
No lift or serving breakfast.
- Nick (10/5): - Pretty much what you expect for a 3 star. The bed was super comfy, the lady that checked me in was really nice, showing me to my room and giving me a quick overview of things.
Would give it 5 stars but it doesn't have parking as described on the website, which is why I chose it in the first place instead I had to park down the road, not the biggest inconvenience but an inconvenience nonetheless.
Overall really happy with my stay.
- Horace (6/5): Great Location, but that’s about it! - A budget room at £69 it may be but I was surprised to find that the room provided no shower gel or shampoo. A previous reviewer commented on the bathroom light not being able to be turned off, well nothing has been done as we had this room and the light still won’t turn off. Bar staff and locals very friendly was the only positive. Would I stay there again next year .. what do you think
- Rupert (2/5): Dissatisfied stay - Really very disappointing. Poor staff no welcome no greeting nothing. Shower in room was a joke, noise from bar below till 1am was again, a joke. Bathroom light wouldn’t turn off, blinds didn’t fit windows properly so was awake at 4am. Didn’t offer food which I knew not breakfast however asking where to recommend was like pulling teeth. “ There’s some restaurants that way” In summary won’t recommend won’t stay again won’t be open much longer in my opinion
- Sara (8/5): - Convenient
- ELizabeth (4/5): Not the best stay - Our stay was not great due to lots of noise (but this could be expected on New Years Eve). The room also had a noisy fridge and the room was not particularly clean. We would not recommend or stay again ourselves unfortunately.
- Garry (6/5): Southwell 1 night stay - Clean and reasonably comfortable, although basic, accommodation for a one-night stopover. First impressions on check-in were underwhelming.
- tracy (10/5): - So comfortable & welcoming, nothing to much trouble
Have booked again
- Gordon (6/5): - Great welcome by the staff at the Crown. It was a shame they are not providing breakfast at the moment. The pub opens late so there is quite a lot of noise until it closes.
- Christopher (2/5): - Staff none existent.no toilet roll.room was cold couldn’t turn heat up. Uncomfortable beds.
- Phil (10/5): Great stay - Attended a wedding
The hotel was lovely
- Steve (10/5): Cracking find The Crown Pub in Southwell - Greta place excellent value for money lovely rooms
- Russell (6/5): - Only plastic beakers for hot drinks were supplied, breakfast was changed to a 'continental' but a small box of cornflakes is not that continental. And the bathroom shaving light was permanently on, but overal a good stay.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - The hotel was in good decorative order and the room was large. However, there was a lot of traffic noise which did not stop until 1am. The toilet leaked which meant that the macerator kicked in every 3 minutes keeping me awake all night. Could not find an off button for the light above the sink.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Clean and friendly. Rooms have all amenities you could want
- Iris (10/5): Rooms and breakfast first class - Lovely room with tea snd coffee facilities. Breakfast cooked to order.nithubg toi myvh trouble
- Pat (10/5): friendly atmosphere - Very friendly environment. Bar was clean and efficient with providing of drinks and checking in. The room was bright and cheerful. Bed very comfortable. Breakfast was good everything you required.
- Laura (2/5): Over priced and grotty - I realise that the owner is working on improving the room accommodation including while we were there but it is not good enough
The shared bathroom was not available and we had to use the en-suite in another room which was frankly rank
- Verified traveler (8/5): - In my opinion some of the previous reviews have been a little unfair. The Crown offers excellent value for money. The staff are brilliant, the rooms are a good standard (I was in room 5). Perhaps a tad small but very acceptable. Behind the bar Linda was the epitome of what you would expect, welcoming helpful and more. The bar atmosphere was friendly, we chose to eat there twice. Bar food was good. Well done The Crown.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Nice area. Nice hotel - Nice hotel in a nice surprise of a town. Friendly staff, good food in the bar and at breakfast and the bed was comfy. Windows don’t open but a mobile air conditioning unit was in the room. Overall a decent place that I’d visit again.
- Steve (4/5): One night stay, never again. - The room needs money spending on it, the bed was very hard as the mattress needs replacing. We reported that the toilet didn’t flush and was told it would be sorted whilst we were out in the evening. When we returned it still didn’t work and was told at breakfast the following morning it couldn’t be repaired. There was no communication from the hotel as to other facilities that we could use so we didn’t have a functioning toilet.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Very lumpy small bed
Window would not stay open
Had to unplug tv to plug in kettle
Nice tea and biscuits
Shower room very tight and needs update
Location good
- Verified traveler (8/5): - It’s not expensive so don’t expect the world,if you want more creature comforts pay more and stay elsewhere.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Its what it is.
Cheap to stay for a fishing trip with mates.
Basic and great value.
- RiFi (4/5): - The bed creaked. The loo seat was barely attached to the loo and you had to crank the handle up and down repeatedly to get it to flush. The heating is primitive and the window sashes have been painted over so no chance of intentionally getting air in. General decor very tired and dated. Breakfast gave limited choice and was basic in design and execution. Staff were friendly and doing their best, although the large bit of fluff/hair/don’t ask what in the middle of the shower when we arrived dissuaded me from using the shower during our short visit. Even the shelf holding tea making equipment had been screwed to the wall at a very odd angle. It just looks as though nobody cares.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - It was perfect for an overnight stay for visiting Southwell races.
- Christopher (8/5): Near the Minster and Shops. - I enjoyed the two nights I stayed at The Crown. The Crown is an oldish building in the centre of Southwell and very near the Minster, local shops and restaurants.
My room was a spacious twin room. It was not ensuite. There was a toilet next door & a bathroom at the end of the corridor. This was reflected in the price. There was a sink in the room. Heating was by a radiator that you turn on or off as you wish. There was no heating in the bathroom which made it chilly.
Being an old building the window had no double or secondary glazing. The noise wasn’t too bad as everywhere shuts about midnight.
I had a good breakfast which kept me going for the day. They also do evening meals in their pub. I had one the first night & it was good home cooking & reasonably priced.
It was great for my two nights. The staff are friendly, the booking process efficient. I would stay there again if I need an overnight in Southwell. I would want an ensuite room if it was for more than a couple of nights though.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - The rooms were really ourdated. The bathroom wasn’t clean and the beds were really uncomfortable. The rooms were cold as no heating was on. There wasn’t a choice for breakfast only option was a full English but the majority of the breakfast was cold and the only options for cold drinks were water or orange juice.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Clean comfortable room, great evening meal and full English breakfast the following morning. Definitely use again.
- Xanne (4/5): - Nice staff, good food, but the hotel itself could do with a major makeover,it needs new windows and central heating as the bedroom and bathroom were freezing cold, new matresses as you could actually see the shape of the springs through the sheets.Would definately not stay there again.
- John (6/5): What - no beer? - All the basics I needed in a very convenient location. A shame that there were six hanpulls on the bar, but no draught beer.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Good location for visiting town. - Good location for visiting town but heater in room not working so mobile heater given. Bed springs knackered Breakfast staff too interested in having a giggle than looking after customers.
We were there 20 mins before someone came very briefly then disappeared back into the kitchen to chat very loudly. Not asked if we needed anything dirty stuff not cleared and breakfast not good. Egg rubbery toast not done beans cold etc etc. No one to even speak to about it. Very disappointing.other people also commenting.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Old style pub hotel, vey warm welcome from staff - Very well situated for all the tiwn amenities, good food.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Nice big room
Brilliant that it has tea/coffee facilities
Bathroom a bit outdated but clean
Overall a good bargain for what you are paying
Staff are friendly
- P (10/5): Nice place excellent value for money - Booked for a colleague. Very happy
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Basic room but in a good location. Nice breakfast.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - I stayed in a twin room. Even though the weather wasn't hot, the window needed to be open otherwise the room was too stuffy. However, as the hotel is on the main road it made it very noisy.
The shared bathroom was very basic.
The cups and glasses in my room didn't get changed once in the 3 days I was there.
The people who work there are very friendly.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Good place to stay with a nice room and comfortable bed, however there was no Wi-Fi in the room that was a bit of inconveniene and the room is a bit noisy as it faces straight to the main road.
- Paul (6/5): Many good features but in need of attention - The hotel met our needs for a comfortable one night stay in Southwell at a reasonable cost. We like old places with character and this had plenty of that. Staff were nice and the breakfast good. The room was large with good, clean linen, but it needed refurbishment. There was a broken pane in the window and broken tiles in the shower. On balance it was fine, but some money needs to be spent on it.
