Guest Reviews
- Chris (7/5): Good -
- Jules (10/5): Exceptional - Owner Jade came back to work to handle a booking.com error, spending 4 hours on the phone to a call centre. They'd advertised her pub rooms even tho they were closed for renovation. Booking.com took my money, confirmed stay then asked her to pay over 3000 pounds for alternative rooms even tho it was their error. Booking.com seem to be abusing their monopoly power to exploit small business owners who have no choice but to use them. They offered terrible, no, robber baron customer service, verging on gangster tactics. An awful 1984 experience where their website and call centre staff operated independently of whether or not the hotel was open or had rooms - overbooking many times AND taking payment for a service that didn't exist. I honestly didn't believe a business could do this. My trust in this brand is broken, they should never have grown this big and hold hard working independents businesses survival in their cold, corporate hands
- Anthony (10/5): Exceptional -
- Anthony (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jean (9/5): Superb - Breakfast was spot on, great value for money, location was perfect for a family wedding nearby nothing
- Janet (8/5): Enjoyable, welcoming and value for money. - It was a very nice place to stay. The landlady was pleasant and made us feel welcome. Room was great everything we had asked for. The food was excellent and value for money. If going to that area again would definitely stay there again. There wasn't anything I didn't like.
- Katerina (2/5): Bring ear plugs or join the rave. - The photos online look good. Arrived to a busy local pub, had to wait for all the locals to be served first before I could check in. The room was located directly above the bar and there seemed to be live music going on. It was so loud in the room. We were very tired from a long journey and were hoping to go straight to sleep at 10pm. It was so noisy my son started to cry. We packed our things and left. I found another place to stay nearby.
Unfortunately we had to return in the morning as my son forgot his electric toothbrush in the bathroom. When I told the staff that we left, it was brushed off by - you should have known that pubs are noisy.
- Anthony (10/5): Exceptional -
- Gary (4/5): Disappointing - Just a basic room nothing exceptional but a good price Shared bathroom was not heated and very cold. Was bitten in bed by something that could not be found
- Rob (8/5): Good base - Friendly staff
Excellent food
Clean room
- Carl (8/5): - Very basic rooms above pub. Staff were really nice.
- Blair (10/5): Just lovely - The staff are absolutely brilliant, had a great meal in the bar too and the 3 kiddos (age 0-6) couldn’t have been made more welcome. Would definitely stay again. Room was big and the kids loved the bunk beds. It’s hard to find a family room to accommodate 5 and this is a great find! The shower wasn’t super powerful but it did the job and I’m not sure there’s much you could do about that anyway
- Healeas (1/5): Bad -
- Lazlo (10/5): - Fantastic lively accommodation
- Healeas (1/5): Bad -
- Wood (8/5): Very good -
- Agnes (1/5): Bad - The inside of the pub looked nice I was planning to stay in a double bedroom for one night. The room was clean with clean bedding and towels. The decor was a bit tired, tiny TV and poor lighting. The room had a strange smell, it wasn't obvious what it was first however when I boiled the kettle it became pretty clear what it was. The kettle was filled to the brim with urine. I then watched a staff member to walk through the busy bar and into the kitchen with the full kettle. Although the staff member was very apologetic they offered nothing. Based on this experience I would not put my feet through the door again.
Unfortunately booking.com let me down as well, promising to sort my 'problem' out in 24hr, leaving me without accommodation for the night.
- Steven (7/5): Punch Bowl - It was conveniently located for my needs I thought I booked a room with its own bathroom but was allocated one with a shared bathroom but I was the only guest so it didn't matter.
Car parking was an issue when the pub was busy
- David (10/5): Home from home - My stay at the punch bowl was excellent from start to finish! From the warm welcome at check in to having a great time in the very modern bar! I ordered the 3 starters from the menu for £15 and it was amazing!! The staff were all great and made me feel very much at home! Big shout out to Charlie and Caitlin who never stopped! I wish the new owner Jayde all the best and can’t wait to return.
- Katie (10/5): Exceptional -
- Roxana (8/5): Clean and comfortable - It was a clean and functional room which was perfect for what I needed it to be.
- Neasham (8/5): Very pleasant - Staff NA
- Lee (5/5): Passable - Shower not working when we got there ! But it was fixed the same day.
- Mark (3/5): Poor -
- Healeas (10/5): Exceptional -
- James (6/5): Doable to a good standard for the night - Price was very worth for the clean room, had a lot of spare items/replenishments for the shared bathroom and toilets etc
Nice bar and additionally would be lovely roind summer time Next door was very noisy on overnight sleep didn’t realise how thin the walls were
(However this was reported to the bartender/cleaners in the next morning)
- Hannah (6/5): Pleasant - Clean and functional at a good price Noisy till late, shower not great, bunk beds not comfortable
- David (10/5): Exceptional -
- Derek (7/5): Good -
- Beverley (1/5): Don't go there - nothing The noise, the awful breakfast that took almost an hour to receive, the room was dark and dismal. Didn't get to sleep till after midnight on the Friday night because of the locals in the bar making a racket and last not getting a reply from the manager in regards to being charged twice. No joke when your £127.50 down in your purse.
- Ian (8/5): Very good - Staff super friendly and welcoming , nice clean rooms N/a
- David (8/5): Good quality b&b. Lively bar. - Very nice pub/bar & room. Food fantastic overall. Very friendly staff. Reasonably priced room, restaurant, and bar. Good quality b&b overall. Very low pressured shower in our room. Very lively bar on an evening and will not be suitable for all, however the hotel did inform us of this on booking.
- Antonia (10/5): Lovely little find - Lovely little place food great Music was abit loud but it was a Saturday night, it's understandable and my kids sleep through anything so wasn't a worry
- David (8/5): Very good - Friendly and welcoming staff and excellent food. Breakfast not available.
- Colin (7/5): Good - Very friendly
- Judith (9/5): Great value, wonderful staff, very friendly place to stay would recommend - Excellent value for money, lovely friendly staff who couldn’t have been more helpful, plus amazing breakfast! Rooms are located above a busy pub, this however was not a problem at all for us and staff offered to turn down music at any time if we were disturbed by it. Couldn’t fault the staff but I feel it’s worth pointing this out on a review if people are looking for somewhere quieter.
- Hall (4/5): Disappointing - Shower head height adjustor was broken and taped to the pipe on the lowest height. Very uncomfortable to shower.
Shower floor had muck on upon arrival.
Shower gel dispenser in the shower had been filled with water instead of soap.
- Gemma (10/5): perfect cozy stay felt at home right away - welcoming from the moment u walk threw the door staff were lovely helpful and friendly
really clean B&B
amazing food
breakfast yesterday
a diner 2 weeks ago no bad comments from me
theyv gone all out with xmas decorations too nothing everything was good and too a good stander
- Stuart (7/5): Comfy rooms great food friendly and helpful staff - The food was excellent the staff attended to our needs and we were made very welcome.
Jane and has maintained the hospitality that was present with the previous licensee.
The price for food and drink was very conpetively priced.
Great venue for watching Sky sports There is a younger element who use the hotel bar who become fairly rowdy as the night progress. Not everyone's cup of tea but it appeared to be all good natured in general.
The latest trend in music has to be something you can enjoy because it's boom boom time
Not too good if your room is above the bar.
It gets busy around the toilet area for some reason as the night progresses
Language can be colourful
- Alexander (10/5): Cute little place - Friendly staff. For whatever reason my hotels.com reservation didn’t take so they gave me the only remaining room they had - which was a suite - at the same price as my original reservation.
- Neil (8/5): Very good - The staff were lovely and very helpful.
- James (8/5): Short pleasant stay just for the night - Clean bedroom and double bed
Warm showers
Complimentary tea and coffee in the room Struggle to get a good sleep with noise on a busy road next to it and next door was very loud and could hear them making noises
Not a major complaint but it’s kind of what you expect in a bar pub
- Allen (3/5): Poor - The food a bar staff are grate locals are canny Ai The fact the getting sleep from 8pm to 11.30pm is impossible due to the jukebox slamming out disco land n hart of gold and all the old school happy hard-core classics. Dont get me wrong a weekend and I would of got off ny grans best chiner and joind them. Sadly it was Monday tusday Wednesday and had a long week of work away.
I get busy pub though it should be more like night club. Ended up find somewhere else for the last night's stay as the lack of sleep got to me.
- David (9/5): I would definitely recommend this property - Rooms were clean and comfortable. The staff were very polite and helpful,
And finally the food was freshly cooked and very enjoyable
- Daniel (7/5): Good -
- Ian (6/5): Lovely people...but needs some TLC - Staff were great Quite noisy with the pub below. Hot water didn't always work.
- Helen (7/5): Lovely place. - Delicious tea and breakfast.
Large, comfortable bedroom.
The boys loved the darts board and pool table.
Good atmosphere.
Friendly staff. The extremely loud music that night due to a Halloween party.
The boys struggled getting to sleep.
- Sophie (7/5): Really clean and overall lovely place - really friendly staff, good atmosphere in the pub and the room was lovely and clean. not the best pillows, and unfortunately had noisy people in the room next to us.
- William (1/5): Never again - Bed was comfortable Wi Fi wouldn’t work in my room as it was too far away. Shower didn’t work very well and was tiny and no soap provided.
- Craig (1/5): left after 15 mins - The fact it was 5 minutes from Beamish Museum The loud music from the bar below
No soundproof rooms
The very thin mattresses (pic shows 2 mattresses in top of each other, we dragged the top one off the top bunk to see if we could make it better)
A TV with no channels just radio in front of a broken tv
Overflowing bins in car park
No response from management about problems
- Shirley-anne (9/5): Lovely place to stay - Lovely food and friendly staff. Room was clean and comfortable Nothing to fault in our overnight stay
- Rachel (8/5): Excellent room with nice touches brilliant food but lively bar - Local to the event we were going to Really busy local bar downstairs felt like outsider
- Hayley (3/5): I would not stay again the fact that the single bed was completely broken and not replaced is disgraceful - There was parking to the rear The single bed was completely broken with a hole in it and a plank of wood across it. There was also damp and the room was very dark, the shower was very poor with a weak flow, hardly enough power to rinse shampoo
- Alison (10/5): Exceptional - Brill staff food accommodation perfect stay
- Sharafat (10/5): Exceptional - Good an nice Security
- Tom (1/5): Awful - Awful. Music pumping until the wee hours, Smokers outside the window. Room stank of bleach. In the middle of nowhere. Awful. Staff friendly enough but left having felt sick for the money I paid. Awful. I should have booked somewhere else
- Jeremy (8/5): Very good -
- Leighanne (10/5): Exceptional - Location was great
Very clean and warm
Lovely welcoming from staff
- Jooste (10/5): A fabulous pub hotel - Staff were brilliant and super friendly. We had an evening meal and breakfast and the food was lovely. Our room was a great size for 3 adults, perfect for a uni drop off. The manager informed us before our stay and on arrival of the noise levels and timings re bar music. It didn't bother us and we knew before we arrived so we were prepared. Downstairs has been fully done out and upstairs will be updated in the future, we'll definitely stay again. Super dog friendly too. We loved it here, just bear in mind It's a steep stairs to go up to the rooms, I managed with my walking stick and the manger kindly carried my things so I could hold onto the rail. It wouldn't put me off staying here.
- Michaela (10/5): - Lovely room, very pleasant welcome from bar staff.
- Lesley (10/5): Exceptional -
- Robin (4/5): Close to Beamish.. that's all I am going to say about it. - not a lot to be fair. Noisy from the bar below. an 18th birthday , so we had to suffer noise until we went down for a drink at 8:15 to order a meal, told that they finish food at 8, but they would do a meal for us as their cook was still there, the meal was ok. we were not told at check in that food was only until 8PM. Barmaid was nice and funny.. Room had nice thick loo roll, Bed - very hard.. single beds side by side with hard edges and deep sinking in the middle. hard to get comfortable and absolutley not good for sharing with an intimate partner unless you are into mountain climbing or bring ratchet straps and bungee cords, the beds need to be replaced with hotel quality ones. Road noise - windows could be better insulated for noise. Worlds smallest TV.. can they please provide binoculars. Tiny shower room, so small we did not risk using it.. Oh.. and the loo seat. maybe invest more than a £5 in a pound shop one - it is a 3mm thick PVC thing that is not at all suitable for a hotel room.
- Fielding (1/5): Miss leading and if you book a twin room and don’t message them after booking a twin they only give you a double room an - There was nothing I liked The staff were rude and not helpful. Miss leading and if you book a twin room and don’t message them after booking a twin they only give you a double room. They will not change the bed around if the notice is less than 24hours. They charged me full price for this as I was working away and didn’t private message them after I pre booked a twin through booking.com
Only got a part refund and didn’t even stay the night avoid
Entrapment and miss leading to day the least
- Aleksandar (3/5): Poor -
- Michelle (1/5): Horrible, uncomfortable, most definitely not worth the money I spent. Won’t stay there again - The size of the room was good. Room needs an overhaul, paint peeling off walls, toilet not fixed and leaks when using.. beds broken and super uncomfortable, shower head needs replacing or descaling, food over priced, bit severed complete and have to wait too long for the missing bits to come, and not very nice. way too loud music for families to stay above.
- Lisa (1/5): Poor - Nothing Every thing also was sold they was going to move me in to a 2 single bed room and never did witchcraft upset my den child, shower was way to small and did t have my bed changes also food was poor and had missing food on our plates
- Andrew (6/5): - The noise from the bar downstairs was just ridiculous, it went till 11:30 ish, the place is very good otherwise, near to beamish, nice area, but the noise....
- Christopher (7/5): Good - Friendly staff and the evening food was good Room needed a bit of TLC..the shower was broken so couldn't use the riser to have a decent shower in the morning.....no breakfast during the week
- Gary (8/5): Very good - Very nice room and pub Bed a bit springy , shower head bracket broken but still worked
- Michael (8/5): To be honest value for money. Just needs a few things sorted - The Location was good Staff were very helpful Someone was smoking in the corridor.on a regular basis . Shower needs attention
- Derek (10/5): Exceptional - Small but comfortable room and the bed was very comfortable. Staff were friendly and the food and drink was extremely good and great value for money. Very satisfied. Nothing
- Verified traveler (2/5): Do not stay here - Quite simply the rooms in this pub are totally unsuitable to be sold as accommodation. We experienced loud music playing in bar until midnight with zero sound proofing in rooms above so extremely loud and impossible to sleep. This was followed at 5.30am by very loud conversations through the paper thin walls/ floor and television or radio with no consideration for guests. No idea why there was this level of noise so early from what sounded like quite a few people but if these rooms are to be sold as bedrooms they need to be properly sound proofed. Furthermore no shower gel or shampoo provided in the bathroom. Radiator on full blast in summer so room far too hot.
- Jeffrey (10/5): - Good friendly staff food excellent
- Sequeira (4/5): Disappointing -
- Nikki (6/5): Pleasant -
- Elizabeth (9/5): Superb -
- Michelle (10/5): Very friendly staff room was clean and comfortable had been warned by friends downstairs (pub) can get loud but we never - Clean and cosey had everything needed. tea and coffee facilities in room and towels included
- Emma (7/5): Good -
- Karen (8/5): Value for money for a family room. - Staff were excellent. Evening meal was lovely and good value. The mattresses were thin and a bit uncomfortable.
- Linda (6/5): Just ok for what we paid - Not available Very small room although the room was clean the pub itself wasn't as nice
- Wayne (6/5): - Staff lovely, food ok , atmosphere very lively. Music very loud and very late .
- Rich (8/5): Very good - Lovely friendly staff, good price and a great breakfast. The rooms were fine and didn't smell and the facilities were fine too. Very clean in rooms and everything you'd need for an overnight stay Smell of smoke going up to the rooms, but the room itself was fine
- Pamela (6/5): Pleasant -
- Carol (4/5): Our room was located above a very busy local pub & we had locals outside in the pub garden shouting & swearing i - It was close to the wedding venue we were attending The location & the fact it was a local pub. The carpets were dirty.
- Nicole (7/5): Lovely pub and staff - Lovely bar and outdoor seating area.
Bar had a live band on the Sunday
Was close enough to beamish and diggerland As we were travelling with a child it was very loud at bedtime however it would be great for couples or those that like a bar.
Rooms were tidy but could use a deep clean.
- Helle (10/5): Exceptional -
- Tambhoy (7/5): Good - Friendly staff and locals in the bar. Decent food at reasonable prices. Clean room. Room was a bit small. Room was above the public bar so was a bit noisy at night.
- Sharon (6/5): Base for a wedding. Was just what we needed. - Clean bedding and a nice bar/restaurant. Noise late at night night but we expected it so weren’t bothered by it.
- Mario (5/5): Nice pub but improvement needed - Nice friendly staff clean room food was okay but tuck time to arrive and was over cooked The shower door was broken and shower head very poor sink blocked and water tuck forever to go down. They need to get rid of the dark grey it makes it look dark and dingy and make it more brighter.Nicepub but needs improvement.P S they to improve or change the mattresses
- Sarah (10/5): Exceptional - Huge room, clean and comfortable, perfect for a family of 5. Bathroom was new, clean and again perfect for a family of 5.
We had breakfast during our stay which again was beautiful. Staff where super friendly and welcoming. Main road is quite noisy however once asleep this didn't bother us. Beds could maybe do with some new mattresses but this didn't stop any of us sleeping.
- Chris (1/5): Bad - Being texted on the day to advise we were unable to stay there
- Malcolm (5/5): Passable -
- Marianne (9/5): Really Recommend! - Staff & owners were really friendly and very accommodating with my last-minute booking and then late arrival. Room was very spacious, really comfortable bed & pillows, tea/coffee facilities too. Very clean room and shared bathroom was also spotless. I ate in the restaurant one night, it was DELICIOUS! Lovely garden out the back too. Great location for exploring surrounding areas. All was great. The only slightly bad thing was that the hallway smelt a bit smokey, but it didn't travel into the bedroom so that's all good.
- Lucy (8/5): Pleasant - There was a super kind lady who offered my daughter a tiptop cause she was teething. Those little extra things makes a huge difference when travelling with kids
- Joyce (8/5): Ideal location for our needs, food excellent, room adequate, good value for money. - It’s clean and friendly and less than 10 minutes from Beamish, which was the purpose of our visit. The food was excellent. The towels and bedding were spotlessly clean. We all (4 sisters), thought the decor (curtains, carpet, painted walls and en suite door) was lovely, well chosen and restful. Excellent parking, and beautiful views of the surrounding area. The room. The mattresses were past their best and on the single bed the springs could be felt through the bedding. There were visible signs of “damp” over the middle window which may be due to a guttering issue. The main light fitting was very dark even with the lights round the mirror (only half the bulbs working?) it was dark. The carpet needed a very good industrial hoover, very fluffy and full of hair and “bits”. The bar/dining area wasn’t suitable for mixed dining, customers were using obscene language, and some of the very young clients were loud and foul mouthed.
- Russ (8/5): Nice stay, comfortable - Nice Room very comfortable bed. Tastefully decorated.
Down points
No shower gel. And i left early, nowhere to leave key.
- Jerry (10/5): Exceptional -
- Daniel (7/5): Good - Nice modern and clean bedroom, good value for money, went out of way to store our bikes Shame that the kitchen was not open for meals and breakfast.
- Ahmed (9/5): Superb - Perfect old and new style at the same time 🩵
- Jacqueline (7/5): Good - Great location for Beamish No breakfast despite the FB page displaying menu and availability. The noise of the music in the pub was over loud and lasted too late on a week night. Not good for families. Pity as has a lot going for it
