Guest Reviews
- Tim (10/5): - Stayed here for 10 days and loved it.
- 458denyseh (10/5): Restaurant at HOTEL BAHIA AZUL - If in the area, definitely stop and eat at the restaurant at Hotel Bahia Azul. The food is the best in all of Uvita. There is also a very nice selection of cocktails. The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. The portions are large. The staff is patient and happy to answer any questions. Tania, the owner, is outgoing and very welcoming. Your first stop won’t be your last!
- Malcolm (6/5): You Get What You Pay for - Basic room, no frills. The room has a kitchen; but no stove, no fridge, no pots, no dishes, no cutlery.
Clean room.
Breakfast is included and is okay. Service could be better. The one drink rule seems silly: If one has orange juice, one cannot have coffee.
- Richard (10/5): - fantastic,
- leighannperdue (2/5): Awful. Zero stars - This hotel is beyond awful. We were booked here with Gadventures. Upon entering our room, we found it had not been cleaned. Razor, mirror and toothpaste in bathroom, dirty bedding and floors. I told the front desk clerk. She looked at me skeptically. Didn't apologize or offer to do anything about it. I had to ask for the room to be cleaned or a different room. She said to get our stuff, come back and she would assign us a different room. She said she checked and the new room had been cleaned. Ugh. That room was also filthy. Dirty sheets and bedding and floors. The coffee pot had mold growing in it. Stay far away from this hotel.
- issy95_13 (2/5): Terrible establishment. Filthy rooms, run-down and appalling hospitality - Stained sheets, uncleaned rooms and bathrooms (when I complained our bathroom was dirty, the owner replied "Oh yes, that's the ants, they do that every day, somebody will clean your room tomorrow morning." No apology, and I had to wait for a full day for the ant debris to be cleared away. And in COVID too! Makes Super 8s look like the Ritz. Avoid it like the plague (or else you may catch it here)! Oh and in case they accuse this review of being a fake (as they have done on the previous ones, I've included a photo of the front of the "hotel".
- Catherine (4/5): Go see the whales - The hotel.staff was wonderful: food was great, well prepared. The proprietor apologized from r the run down conditions since COVID had affected tourism, but neither the internet nor THE TV stations worked in the room for the first night. The bed was very uncomfortable.
The chef, his wife and child ldren we're welcoming, helpful and pleasant.
Too bad. The city is lovely and the whale watching was fantastic!!
- ryanbA7634OF (10/5): Amazing ceviche - Great food. Came here to eat after a canyoning trip. Best ceviche I’ve ever had!!! Service was fantastic! Very nice people and great conversation! Homemade ice cream to finish the meal was amazing! We will definitely be back next time in Uvita.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - They said reservations wasnt paid but i have proof and wouldnt let my driver check in he slept in his car!!
Owner said talk you for refund
- 591erickf (10/5): Great food and service - Food was delicious, specially the homemade ice cream, fish was very fresh and the service was truly, as well. 100% recommended for those who visit Uvita and want to try good local food! I would come back
- dittej2016 (10/5): Wonderful lunch - We didnt stay at the hotel but stopped for lunch - and we were glad we did. A wonderful tuna tatare and fish ceviche. Really great food and a affordable price. Homemade from scratch so you had to wait a while but is was worth it👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great location close to Costa Rica Dive & Surf, friendly staff and the hotel's owner is always on property. Affordable rates.
- tanndance (6/5): Clean room and nice people - The lady that checked us in was very nice and the room was clean and spacious. The rooms need to be updated as the paint was worn throughout and the bathroom sink did not work well. OK for an overnight but would not want to stay much longer.
- kaiserschmarrn2015 (4/5): Should have gone somewhere else - It was already dark and rained when we were looking for a room on our way southward, so we did not look further, but we should have! The good things first: A/C, WIFI and TV worked, food in the restaurant was good. The room was an extremely basic, even though spacious, mouldy smelling room, containing 3 beds, one (!) Lightbulb to lighten the whole room, 1 towel per person. No table or chair.
The breakfast was the skimpiest of our 3 weeks in Costa Rica, (although this was not the cheapest room.)
We survived it, but certainly don't recommend it.
- Pei Yao (6/5): Good place but not a great breakfast - Good place, but the breakfast is too small. Small portion which could not qualify for continental breakfast.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Great location and stay - Just a short walk (5-10 min) from the marina ballena national park. Beautiful area, near a couple of small grocery stores and a couple larger ones if you have a car. Restaurant food was good. Wifi was very good. rooms are pretty basic and could be updated, but overall met my needs for everything.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - We loved our stay! Tanya is very friendly and accommodating. The rooms are comfortable and the a/c was much appreciated! The hotel is in the perfect location! The included breakfast is delicious!
- Janet (8/5): Great stay - The hotel was great. It did take about an hour to cool the room down after check in but after that, it was fine. The staff was very helpful . The beach was close and food was above average. We will stay there again!
- Travel726692 (10/5): Great hotel and restaurant - We stayed here for 3 nights, great service and AIR CONDITIONING!!! Which you will need, trust me. Close to beach and Uvita waterfalls. BEST strawberry daiquiri I ever had, fresh fruit. Highly recommend
- Patrick (10/5): Pura Vida!!!!! - great staff. super friendly and love the Tipico breakfast that comes with our stay.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Excellent location staff was awesome Food was great. Accommodation was basic but clean and inviting.
- Kenneth (6/5): Decent hotel in a wonderful spot - This is a very basic hotel. Nothing fancy but it was clean and had good a/c. Beds were ok but not great. The staff was very friendly and helpful. There is a pool and a restaurant on the premises. Ten minute walk to the beach and close to lots of restaurants and other businesses.
- Kathie (8/5): - The location was wonderful for easy access to the beach and a SCUBA diving trip to Cano Island. The rooms were not fancy, but adequate, though they had a kind of chemical smell from some cleaning solution I assume. The staff was friendly and helpful. The food was tasty.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Bahia Azul is a nice hotel in Uvita close to the National Park. The host is very friendly and helpful and provided many informations about the area, tours, what to do and also about the country. The food was very tasty and the breakfast was good as well. I definitely would stay there again
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Too price but in a good location and great service.
- Wilson (10/5): 4 years in a row coming here! - Tania is the mos acomodating and lovley lady there is! The staff is always helpful happy friendly and respectful. The rooms are spacious clean and comfortable for the price charged you cant ask for a better place to stay!
- Justin (10/5): Cute little hotel near Uvita and the beach - The Hotel Bahia Azul is a wonderful, basic little motel in Uvita, Costa Rica, just down the road from a stunningly gorgeous beach, and near many activities, including the Envision Festival, which is about 5 minutes away by car. The restaurant on site is delicious. I mean REALLY good. We ate there at least twice a day, and didn’t feel much need to eat elsewhere, as they served everything from tuna ceviche to steak to seafood pasta with clams, mussels, crab, fish, squid and other delectable delights. The staff was super friendly and helpful, calling taxis for us and being generally wonderful. It is a very basic hotel, but our room had three beds and wonderful air conditioning, which is one of the most important things when staying in a hot, humid jungle environment. I would definitely stay there again.
- LauChaves (10/5): Good logding option in Uvita - One of the most important assets the hotel has is the restaurant, the food is amazing, they offer plenty of vegetarian options. Also they are environmentally conscious, they don't use straws and try to recycle as much as possible. I would say they should improve the showers, they don't have hot water and I think the rooms do need a mini-fridge.
- BrianNapaCa_ (2/5): Only thing Azul were the Brick Walls !! - Please do not get suckered into staying here based on internet Pics or "other" reviews. The place is hardly within walking distance to any water or business area in town- The very OLD worn out rooms were 14" X 14" square cinder-block painted blue walls with VERY DIM overhead light -.Toilets old- no drain covers in shower (Dead Man's Shower Head) - You know the ones.. 2 small wires going into the shower head which either heat a small coil for a little warm water or send you to your grave if they short out!! Restaurant food mediocre typical "Pinto Gallo" with little protein. Fortunately, it was only a travel stop-over on our way to Osa/Corcovado for 4 fabulous nights at the Iguana Lodge- I would rather have driven into the evening then wasted my $200.00 per night here- Think Mexicali border Notell/Motel- Locks on doors were the best part of the night. Came with Breakfast which was probably worth about 90 cents (Rice-Beans and one egg)- Trust me on this one- We stayed and 4 other REALLY nice locations on our two week visit- Don't do this disaster- BW
- EdelweissLodge (10/5): Great place to hang your hat! - We just returned to California from an amazing trip to Costa Rica.
Uvita is a charming town with so much to offer those who just want to experience the laid back Tico life style.
We arrived in Uvita with no reservations or expectations. We were lucky enough to come upon the Bahia Azul, fortunately it was the shoulder season and there was room for us.
We definitely recommend this place with all our hearts, being centrally located, and you even get a great breakfast every morning!
Their excellent dinner menu was an added convenience to a long day exploring the empty beaches and waterfall hiking.
Beautiful Whale's Tail park is just down the street and a nice walk away.
Perhaps I shouldn't give praise to this place so as to keep it available for my next visit!
- Verified traveler (6/5): Good Tico Hotel - Simple. Three beds and a side table. Good hot shower, great staff, decent food. Beds not comfortable for me, but that could just be me. Good value. Good location, central to a lot of beach and other activity.
- I9953ICmeganp (6/5): Ok room, poor breakfast, air conditioning - My husband and I found this place literally as a back up plan to our failed attempt at a stay in Drake Bay. We wanted something close to the beach with electrify, running water, and air conditioning. That's pretty much all this place had. The furniture was dated and the mattress was old. It rolled toward the middle and was hard. We stayed on the first floor and there were people staying above us. Any time they were awake, we were awake. It was like a 500lb person was running across the floor. The room smelled extremely strongly of toilet freshener. So much so that our clothes smelled of it. There were no washcloths or hand towels, only two, small bath towels. The good thing was that the air conditioning worked. The breakfast left a lot to be desired. We ended up going elsewhere after the first 2 days of breakfast there. We had many ants in our room and actually the last day we were ready to check out found termites. Also, the nearby beach is not very close (5 minute drive) and you have to pay to park and you have to pay to enter the beach as it is a National Park. We went up the road about 15 kilometers to Playa Dominical where the beach was better, you didn't have to pay, you could rent boards, chairs, umbrellas and much more. Difficult to set up snorkeling to Isla del Cano as they need at least 6 people to make it count for the ship and it is likely that it's people from other hotels to try and make that work.
- Curtis (6/5): average hotel - the front desk lady was super nice
- Verified traveler (6/5): Economy hotel close to Envision Festival. - Basic crash pad with AC for daytime power-up naps.
- DTROB (4/5): I would looking elsewhere - Let's start by saying I am not one to complain, nor am I high maintenance. When I arrived the motel had notified me that I had only booked for one person. I booked through Expedia so I guess I they hit me with a technicality of not clicking two persons. They charged me an additional $95.00 to which I paid with no hesitation. It should be noted that when you go on the Expedia website...the same price appears whether you have one or two persons.
The breakfast is the same everyday and very bland (scrambled eggs, beans/rice and toast or tortilla). The breakfast is very, very basic. We started going elsewhere in the morning after the having that three days in a row. We did have dinner on the first night and it was very good, I must say.
The rooms are very basic with dated furniture and mattresses. There was not one shower in five days that I was able to get hot water. They say there is a switch at the top of the shower head however; there is still no hot water. Several guests told me the same.
We had a pipe burst from the toilet that flooded our room thus saturating a leather bag and shoes. This is not their fault however; no apology or even a concern towards us. We were cleaning the room along with one of the staff for about an hour. No one ever approached us after to see if we needed anything. Some of our clothes and shoes were soaked. Again, not a big deal but they did not seem to care.
I would do your research prior to coming here. Do not expect much.
- Sheryl (8/5): 3 star hotel with 6 star service - The Bahia Azul is a modest hotel...what sets it apart is Tanya, the hotel manager. She was so incredibly helpful. She went searching for the different excursions I wanted...even finding them at 9pm the night before. Made sure I always had a breakfast, even if it was to-go because of an early morning activity. Also, I speak very little Spanish so Tanya helped me arrange local bus transportation and connections all the way to Cahuita. Finally, the restaurant serves fantastic food! ...but note, the restaurant is closed during the day on Sundays and Mondays.
- Exploration675125 (10/5): Lovely place to eat get lost and enjoy the peace and quiet and enjoy a meal you will never forget👌👍😎✌️️ - Lovely place to eat get lost and enjoy the peace and quiet and enjoy a meal you will never forget👌👍😎✌️️what a great day to stumble upon such a lovely time ...time if our lives such good food and fun....
- Janet (10/5): Friendly staff. - Great people, Tonya the manager was very helpful with telling us about the area. Rousa kept our room very clean with fresh towels everyday. Carlos the chef..excellent!!!!!! . Very clean, friendly atmosphere. I would differently come back again.
- Tommy504 (10/5): Both Affordable and Charming - I enjoyed staying at this hotel, and the area, so much that I changed all my plans and spent the whole week here. It's a charming, smaller family owned hotel that is both affordable and within walking distance to the gorgeous beach. A full breakfast is included in the price. The food is fabulous! The owner, who speaks excellent English, went out of her way to assist me with anything I needed. She made arrangements for tours, called taxis for me and made sure I got a good price, translated when I needed to talk to a doctor, had someone come by the hotel when I wanted my nails done, and answered endless questions about the area, and the whales, with a smile. But most importantly, as a single woman traveling alone, she made me feel secure and comfortable. I would absolutely stay here again. I loved the hotel, the food, and the price!
- spencerb855 (10/5): Would return in a heartbeat! - We were a multi-generational group (grandparents and teen grandson) and the hotel met all our needs. The rooms were big and clean, beds very comfortable, air conditioned, quiet. The warm swimming pools gave options of different temperatures. Iguanas loved to visit when we cooled off in the pools shaded by palms, mango and lime trees. The staff were very accommodating to our different diets, as well as meeting other needs that arose during our week stay. I especially enjoyed the fresh juices with each meal of the various local fruits, many I never have heard of before. Location was great, short walk to the beach, the park and soccer field, and to the small local store. The place carries a very relaxed and friendly atmosphere that helped to contribute to a grand vacation for all of us.
- Mitra (8/5): Simple but sweet - Close to Envision Fest
- Mitchell (6/5): Good value and a good night's sleep. - The room was basic, but clean, and gave us a good night's sleep in air-conditioned comfort when we really needed it. The owner was very helpful and spoke good English. The hotel is a short walk from the beach and is near restaurants and grocery stores.
- Bryan (10/5): Verry nice - Verry nice, frindly staff, well done, thx again!!
- Victoria (10/5): Great hotel, close to the beach/ national park! - We really enjoyed our stay at Bahia Azul! Tania was a wonderful host, answered all our questions and gave great information about all the beaches in the area!
The free breakfast was delicious (typical CR breakfast) yummy coffee! The restaurant is open til 9pm, lots of options. We tried the supreme nachos, good stuff!
The rooms were clean and in good shape. Great water pressure in the showers and AC was a life saver in the heat! Clean pool on the property as well!
Great value for the price you pay. We would definitely return!
- ecotravelerMA (10/5): Awesome Vacation! - My niece and I visited Costa Rica for the first time in June. This was our home base for a week and we couldn't have asked for a better experience. Lovely family run hotel in a small town just a walk from the beach. The owners where super nice and the food was great. Great visit overall.

- MindyandSean (10/5): Wonderful Stay! - We stayed in March 2015 while attending Envision Festival. It was everything we needed with great hospitality! Our hosts were very welcoming, the rooms were clean and well kept, and the daily breakfast delicious. We would stay again.
- Matjaz (6/5): Nothing special - We use this hotel only for sleep. The location was good, but the room had a humid odor(maybe a little like mold) because of all the moist. Thankfully the A/C worked fine. The breakfast was typical tico.
- Amada (10/5): Nice hotel very close to the beach. - We stay only one day but was very nice, clean room, very good breakfast (included in the price), free parking.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Hotel located 10 min to Marino Ballena national park, with a good local breakfast and a nice pool. The room was clean but it didn't smell clean and the bathroom door was difficult to close. Expedia rates may be not updated, beacuse I had some issues in reception, but she was going to fix the issue directly with them
- Verified traveler (8/5): Average. - As a growing tourist destination there is not a great selection of mid-range accommodations. Bahia Azul met our basic needs. The owner is very nice, accommodating, and has knowledge about the area. The breakfast very good-gallo pinto. The room has a/c--which is needed in Uvita, the heat and humidity are brutal. However, the room is very unattractive (bare as a cell) and one of our beds needed a new frame (the mattress was slipping through a broken support bar).
