Guest Reviews
- Felipe (4/5): - The place itself needs a lot of upgrades. The place was built early 1900, and they haven’t updated absolutely anything. There’s no air-conditioning. And the fan works after 15 minutes of being plugged in. The place is just run down. Our recommendation to the owner to spend a little bit of money, and change the furniture. Install new flooring, replaced the bed mattress in new bedsheets.
- kyle (10/5): - Room was very nice, I would say it was more of an experience instead of just a place to sleep. There is a lot of history in the building, its not the most modern or practical but a very cool stay.
- Stephanie (4/5): Cool but scary - Very cool building but the area so so sketchy and the sky train is directly outside the window
- Richard (8/5): - This is a historic building built in 1912 with many very old amenities mixed with a few more modern ones, tastefully integrated with the old. The historic nature of the hotel was an experience in itself. The elevator, I was told, was the first in BC, and had manually closing inner and outer doors. The cables, however, looked much newer and safer. The suite itself was large with separate bedroom, living room and kitchen, also with a bathroom with an ancient deep bathtub on clawed legs and a toilet with an early 20th century tank. The two main rooms had overhead ceiling fans and lights, and the bed was very comfortable. Although there was no coffee provided, there was a complimentary bottle of Okanagan wine. The electrical outlets like most older hotels were few and far between, but they were updated to three-prong plugs. I need one in the bedroom for a CPAP machine, and only found it when I pulled out the bed to access the wall underneath it. The Skytrain was literally right outside the window and the trains were constant. For some people this would be a problem, but it didn't bother me as I grew up around trains. Overall, I very much enjoyed this hotel, but it's not for everybody and certainly not for those wanting very modern amenities.
- Zena (10/5): - A bottle of wine left on the table is a great welcome. Love the character!
- zhishuo (8/5): - Special antique property. I love it.
- Marilyn (8/5): - Very unique property; impossible to compare with typical hotels. It's like staying in a museum or going back in time to my grandma's house. Skytrain is right outside the window, so loud, but also convenient. A fun experience!
- stephanie (10/5): - This property is unique a venture into the past. Amazing.
- Ishinabe (10/5): - The owner and assistant is so helpful, they are so heartwarming.
- Danielle (8/5): - Loved the heritage of this 1910 building. Along with a heritage building you have limited modern ammentiies.
The service was great- the owner did our check in as we were not able to make it between check in times. Complimentary bottle of wine if that is important to you.
Books and VHS's - yes we had VHS 's and a player for entertainment.
Location - you are right by the skytrain so you do have noise. You are downtown so there are unhoused. There are progrsms in that area for those that need services during the day. For the most part they are respectful of your presence.
Parking stalls could have apartment numbers on them. Patrons need to learn how to park most of the time we could not get into stalls as people were parked on the lines.
Street parking is free from 8pm -8am noon on Sundays.
- Alan (4/5): Not a good option - Listed as a 3 star, but it's only 2. Large suite with full kitchen, but no coffee for the coffee maker. Very old building. SkyTrain ran beside our room every 5 minutes until 1:00 am, starting again at 5:30 am. Parking in the back is not secure and surrounded by street people. People outside screaming into the night. All floors squeak. Plumbing works but is ancient, shower is virtually unusable. Sketchy neighborhood. Bed was comfortable, and the bottle of wine was a pleasant surprise.
- Karen (10/5): - Amazing gem of a hotel. Affordable, unique, comfortable and fun. Great for tourists and locals alike.
- Kristen (10/5): - Always our favorite place to stay when we come to town. It feels like our home away from home.
- Salim (2/5): - unfortunately nothing was good, it is better to close the hotel as soon as posible.
- Victoria (10/5): - I was pleasantly surprised what a relic of a building
I felt the price was very fair to enjoy going so far back in time
The neighborhood is a little rough sad to say but we are all humans and I would definitely recommend this hotel to friends and family
- Morgan (10/5): - Hotel was beautiful
- Eufemia (4/5): - Very old noisy no air-conditon i cant sleep
- Richard (10/5): - Amazing place to stay
I got used to sky train after 1st night
- Jennifer (2/5): - My husband and I paid for one night as we travelled from Kelowna for a concert. When we returned from our outing the television and lights were on after being turned off before we left. Someone had been in our room while we were away and the managers had no explanation aside from telling us that they routinely turn the lights and tv on in every room. This had not been told to us during check in. Due to our confusion and fright, we left the hotel with our belongings asap. Even more, my husband and I spotted bed bugs on the walls in the bedroom beside our bed. This was a nice addition to the congregation of drug addicts surrounding the parking area behind the building. To conclude, we did not stay in our room and we slept in our truck parked 10 minutes away. We asked for a refund but our request was declined. This hotel experience was absolutely terrifying and will definitely not be returning.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Fine if you dont mind sleeping w mice - I really loved the idea of this place. It is a restored historical home with charm. The place itself is spacious with seperate bedroom and kitchen. But with that comes no ac and its noisy with train running behind. I looked past the large group of unhoused people who sleep by the parking lot. I looked past all the rats running through the parking lot at night because its not the hotels fault per se. But the dead mouse odor in the kitchen became worse so we kept kitchen door closed. The final straw was when we were awoken to the sound of rattling and nibbling and saw Mice feasting in the middle of night, chewing through a sealed bag on the dining table. Even keeping the lights turned on didnt deter them because they made an appearance again in the early morning hours. Needless to say, im glad we only booked 1 night because we got only 3 hours of sleep max. If it didnt have rodents, it would have been fine. But mice crawling on you, freaks me out, honestly.
- Candido (6/5): - Location, old property mouse trap in rooms
- Corey (10/5): - Had a great time during the stay!
- christoopher (2/5): - Rodent infested and would not give refund
- erdi (2/5): - unexpected conditions
- Verified traveler (2/5): Horrible hotel - Worst stay ever. Very bad area and always some noise from train and junkies screaming.
- Min (4/5): - Downstairs there were lots of homeless, and we need to get out of the car to push the gate open for us to get in/out the parking lot. Feels unsafe.
Also very noisy with train passing by
- Margaret (6/5): Historical experience - The building is a really fabulous piece of history but I believe it could be kept up better without destroying the historic value. I appreciate what the owners are doing by trying to maintain history but it certainly could have been cleaner. I did read about mice in an earlier review and I did see one. I’m glad I went because I love old places but also wouldn’t have wanted to take other family members that may have expected something better. The kitchen was well equipped.
- Kristen (10/5): - We always LOVE staying at this hotel and we will be going back every time we stay on the mainland. We appreciate the building's original charm and that it is a very comfortable place to stay. The location is AMAZING, as it is steps from any possible necessity, including public transit. The only thing we are wary of is the transient people living out back of the building, but that cannot be helped by the hotel. We highly recommend staying here.
- Bruce (8/5): - The property is a historic antique. We checked in expecting this but some further restoration is needed. (suite had squeaky floors) It was a unique experience. Management (Shneet) was accommodating and allowed a late change to our itinerary. Overall it was pleasant and unusual experience.
- Grant (6/5): Historic - It is a classic stay in a heritage building. Old historic property. No in room ability to control heat and no a/c. Our stay was mid spring so neither were an issue. Large "suite" with full cooking facilities and dishes provided. We ate out there are numerous restaurants with in walking distance and sky train is right there. Hopefully the noise doesn't bother you. Good stay for the price. Area of town leaves a little to be desired bit we did not feel unsafe. Unable to upload photos so check out my google review for them.
- Robert (10/5): - A unique stay at a 1910 era building.
Lots of character and an amazing old school elevator. The free wine was very good and a much appreciated surprise.
- James (8/5): - Beautiful heritage building with a quirky elevator, but I liked the character. Very large bedroom, living room, kitchen, etc. Clawfoot tub. On the negative side, next to the skytrain track so tended to hear that until trains stopped. It might get very hot in the summer, as we only had fans, no AC. Various social services nearby so some may be uncomfortable with the area. Staff were great!
- Christopher (10/5): - What a wonderful place to stay, a jem.
Will stay here again.
For those looking for something unique this is a great place.
- mike (10/5): - GLYNN AND MYRNA ARE EXCELLENT THEY ARE THE HOTEL OWNERS , GREAT STORIES , THE PLACE IS SO COOL LIKE STEPPING BACK IN TIME !!
- Darwin (10/5): Great stay, affordable accommodations - The stay was awesome. The girlfriend and I enjoyed the accommodations, and the 1910 character of the building/room. Just had a small hiccup trying to make contact with the owner/operator of the establishment. Once contact was made and accommodations were confirmed everything was smooth and the owner/operator was super. I give a 9 out of 10 and will recommend the Arundel Mansion to anyone visiting New Westminster, BC.
- Richard (6/5): Definitely an experience - Stay was an experience but generally not unexpected as it is a 1912 building. Roomy with a good bed and more than adequate kitchen. Elevator was definitely an experience. The rumble of the Skytrain outside the living room area would be a problem for many but we slept well despite it.
- Christopher (8/5): - It was a nice old heritage building. Good price. Just lacked hot water at time and there were mice.
- Kristen (10/5): - This hotel was exactly what we were hoping it would be. Beautiful, old heritage building with all of its original and classic charm. Perfect location too! We got a bit of a tour around the place and learned some of its origin (the check in lady was great!) And we will definitely be staying here in the future.
- Cory (10/5): - We came to the area from our if town for a Dr appointment, the check in and out process was quick and easy, and the apt was spacious and comfortable. The only complaint I would have is the closeness to the sky train track and we were not used to the sound in the morning. Other than that it was great!!
- Reg (8/5): Classic - It was very inexpensive for the property. Loved the classic feel. The elevator was worth seeing and using. Very classic. The space was clean and comfortable. Downside was the sky train runs right beside it.
- Michael (6/5): - Old building. Nice and warm inside. They've made an effort to make things comfortable. But it's dated and there are a few mice scurrying around.
- Andy (10/5): - A gorgeous building which was been wonderfully preserved to its period state. If you enjoy history and appreciate the details of past architecture this is the best hotel for you. I absolutely adored staying here; it was like my dream of living in a heritage home come true! You get a whole apartment, with a fully stocked kitchen. All the cool things about the building are so fun, like the pressure plate to open the kitchen door, the doorbell, and especially the elevator. Owners are very nice and accommodating; I highly recommend this place
- Lovepreet (2/5): - There was big black mice in the room and whole building
- Michele (10/5): - Beautiful old heritage stay !
Great communication & gf Ollie up to questions & requests !
Thankyou! wish we could have stayed 1 more night
- Ashna (2/5): - It was scary to stay there
- Ric (8/5): Nice historic hotel - It is a historic hotel with few amenities and very unique. Bed is comfortable and is a very spacious unit with separate kitchen, bedroom and living/dining room. A lot of homeless people around especially a the back where hotel parking is.
- Linda (10/5): - How cool to see a property that maintained the vintage style. I loved seeing how they lived in the past
- Robert (8/5): Like stepping back in time - This place is so cool! It's literally like stepping back in time. If you were living in this place in 1922 you were ballin'.
My only comment about our particular room was that the sky train ran right under it every 37 seconds. It's like that scene in The Blues Brothers when they stay in Elwoods room.
- Arumuga Kumar (8/5): - It was a awesome stay at the Mansion.
- Danielle (2/5): - We stayed at this property after seeing it on Expedia, for a quick getaway at the beginning of July. When we were shown to our room, all of the windows were open because of how hot and muggy it was inside, and there was a train that ran right outside our window. This train ran all day and all night and was exceptionally loud. In order to get any relief from the heat, you had to open the windows so we heard the train all day and night. The property was dirty and there were homeless individuals all around both entrances. In order to park you have to park in a lot next to the food bank and walk up an ally that smells of urine. Our first night was uncomfortable but my partner had to work the entire next day so we decided to make the most of it. The next day he was completely unable to work because he could not get on the hotels Wi-Fi, despite one of the selling points of this property being free Wi-Fi. That day we escaped the room and went to lunch and when we returned and opened the front door, a crack pipe fell off the door handle and onto my foot. That was the last straw and we packed up and left immediately. I contacted the property to let them know we were vacating early and was told that we would be contacted about a refund, but we were not. I’ve attempted to contact the property on several occasions with no luck. The woman who is running the day to day for this place is very kind and well intentioned but is over her head
- Michael (6/5): - Rustic. The old elevator somewhat charming and somewhat concerning.
- Teresa (4/5): - The property is quaint and old. There is not front desk and had to meet to get keys. Was not given a Wifi password and unable to reach him after to find one. The property is located above the train tracks so it is very loud. The single pane windows did nothing to reduce the noise every 3-5 minutes. The kitchen in the suite is very old and outdated.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Unique, spacious and comfortable accommodations. Close to shopping and transportation. Historic building.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Overall, not bad - The place has a lot of character, its beautiful and very unique, very old, has so much charm, I would like to go back but some things were not very clean, the percolator was very dirty (put a Polydent tablet with water overnight and it will look almost new), the pots and pans were not very clean. I understand that the building is over 100 yeas old, but the cover for the ironing board could have used a good wash. Staff was very friendly and helpful and so was the owner/manager.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - Very old building right next to skytrain track.....too much noise
- Dianne (6/5): - This property is very vintage and has a lot of character. That location is very sketchy and as a single woman I would not ever stay there. The fire extinguisher was extremely out of date and the bedding could be upgraded. The noise of the sky train makes sleep very challenging.
- Christopher (8/5): - Very soft bed.. great night stay
- Verified traveler (8/5): - It was a pleasant stay. I enjoyed the close proximity to skytrain and shopping. A close walk to the New West scenic Quay.
The Arundel is close to the skytrain line, therefore some noise.
I loved the period specific furnishings.
- Liza (8/5): Funky hotel - Great location. This is a 100 year old hotel it is funky. Smells a bit in hallways. Bedding is mismatched. Kitchen has all amenities if you want to cook. Lots of ethnic places to eat. People are friendly.
- Christopher (8/5): - Great place
- Verified traveler (10/5): - This property is like no other. If you’re into unique old style flapper days and anything that That never existed until the past few years and this is this day for you. Located right in the middle of a new Westminster this gem is a hidden one and it’s trashy I hold dear to my heart. There’s something about this place that makes it special unique and one-of-a-kind. This is a great place for any couple, person visiting on business, or possibly for even a small family.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - She was rude to me. Could have been polite but wasn't
- Kristie (10/5): - Everything is great about this place. Clean friendly and unique
- Nyree (10/5): Décor delight - Lovely décor, perfect spot, close to everything a person needs when visiting New West
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The rooms are a step back in time. It was like staying at my grandmother’s house. Love the apartment size space and full kitchen. The Wi fi reception is not great but it wasn’t at grandmas either:)
- Shane (10/5): - This place takes you back to a time that has been forgotten throughout the years. Awesome to see old buildings like this still being used as it was 100 years ago !
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Arundel was a very cool place to stay. Bob the property management/ check in was incredibly nice, showed me around and explained the history of the building. It was like taking a step back in time. Just like taking a step back in time though the wifi was practically non existent and the (modern) TV in the room had the worst picture I’ve ever experienced. The surrounding neighborhood has a fair amount of homeless but it’s not really an issue like others have mentioned in their reviews. Noise was a bit of an issue, being so close to the sky train station meant if you had your window open it was a bit like being right inside the station itself. These are minor annoyances (besides the wifi - that needs to get updated) I would without a doubt stay here again.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Absolutely oozing old world charm. Beautiful wooden floors, high ceilings, claw foot bathtub, original elevator. Just gorgeous. Staff was super helpful and friendly. Downsides: train noise and a bit of a seedy part of town. Overall a wonderful place to stay!
- Jack (10/5): - this place is unique ! Keep it up but don;t touch it !
- Anthony (4/5): Not a good area - Not a good area lots of crackheads in and around the hotel. I would not stay here again.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - I liked the historical feel. I found the staff helpful, and the location is close to all amenities. The Skytrain runs past, so it took a bit of getting used to. Overall, I give the hotel a 7.5/10. I would stay there again.
- Oak Bay (10/5): a beautiful trek back in time - This is the second time I stayed here! Its a hotel with lots of character; everything is years old! ... and that is charming that you can go back in time. I loved it!
- Chloé (8/5): Lovely mansion - Very original place to stay overnight. Early 1900s mansion with old apartments. Nice little place. If you park behind the building, can be hard to bring all your stuff if you’re alone. Could benefit toiletries (shampoo). In all was very nice stay and pleasant owners.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Loved the history of the place , and the elevator interring from that era . Rooms were large and spacious
- Verified traveler (10/5): - This is my first revue... the place was awesomely shaby sheek & i loved it👍 Partner & i really enjoyed the space all of it- ya the bathroom is a hundred years old- we though that was kool. Everything worked great & we will be back to this old theatrical none cookie cutter hotel for more adventures...
- Heather (10/5): - Was absolutely perfect ! I booked a room for my birthday and got to choose which room i wanted out of a couple rooms. They had a birthday card and bottle of wine for me. Arundel is such a neat building i love it! I asked if i could extend my check out time and myrna had informed me that she already asked cleaning stagf to not come and said i could stay as long as i want! We checked out at 5pm. Best birthday present ever! I am 100% thrilled with my stay at Arundel! I will be back
- Tessa (10/5): - I'd always been curious about this place, so when I needed to get out of my apartment for an evening, I gave it a shot. It was wonderful, so many original furnishings, a real trip back in time. One of the owners showed us around, and she was absolutely lovely. Would definitely recommend for anyone looking for more of an experience in their accommodations.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Needs a lot of work - Run down, hot water takes 20m to get hot, no shampoo, old rags for towels.
- DarleenG (10/5): - Old country charm with a magnificent view. We loved the uniqueness of this 1912 historic building. An elevator that requires you to close two doors yourself is just one of the fun adventures of this building. We loved it and will return the next time we need to stay on the lower mainland.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Close to skytrain for work.
Not much heat and hot water took a while
- FB (6/5): - The staff were good and gave me a look at the room before I stayed, although, there was nothing I could have done at that point if it was uninhabitable. It is a curiousity, this property. The location was extremely convenient for me and I appreciated having the kitchen. The bed was comfortable. However, the skytrain passed LOUDLY just outside the windows until late, the garbage in the bedroom had not been emptied before I arrived and I only noticed it later on. Everything was dated, which seems obvious in an older building, but tired and threadbare furniture. All in all, it was fine and kind of eccentric, but you need to be one of those people who can be flexible in your expectations.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Checking in was a huge problem, there is no front desk so you have to be in at a specific time.
- Katrina (4/5): no hot water and very noisy and lack of upkeep - I really wanted to enjoy this experience but was so disappointed. I had no hot water for the two days - resorted to heating up water to have sponge bath! The trains are right at the side of the building so MAJOR noisy hard to get any sleep. Basically like you are sleeping on the tracks :( I found some ear plugs in the room but even this did not help. While the unit was very large and had lovely period features - the amenities were mostly cast off garage sale type - the fridge was old frosted type etc.. so basically not period and just perhaps cheaped out . The whole building was in poor repair and really took away from what could have been a lovely boutique period experience. No service people and you have to call to check in. On the plus bed was comfortable. close to everything.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - The future guests should know that this hotel is just next to the Sky Train line so, noise is a serious issue. We could not sleep.
- Bill (8/5): - close to transit, but noisy because of it.Comfortable and large apartment.
- Papa (2/5): - Rude lady for check in
She asked what time it was then said "thank you for waking me up"
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Location is wonderful. Old world charm in an antique
- Ky (10/5): - The perfect place if you’re looking for a good place to write or to take vintage photographs. Not your typical hotel. Expect more of an apartment-like experience. Perfect for grocery shopping and cooking your own food. The elevator is a little sketchy but also quite cool. Very close to the SkyTrain.
- Weng Fook (4/5): - The accommodations need updating...it's quaint, but, quaint only gets you so far. Way to close to the Skytrain. Not very comfortable from environment perspective, just fans and with the windows closed due to the Skytrain running by, a bit unbearable ! The overall smell of the building and accommodation is not very welcoming...feels like I walked into an apartment building where all the cooking smells have accumulated over they years...
- Lisa (8/5): - I love this hotel for the proximity to transit, no fuss check out, and the overall fell and look. I dislike the local street people clogging up the back entrance but it is the times. It was great having the kitchen with 3 kids and the toilet was questionable but never failed.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Spacious space. Antique
- Ofer (8/5): - Arundel Mansion is in many ways stepping into an early 1900's setting. It is a sweet little historical gem in that sense and so well and conveniently located near the train station and the cool and touristy side of town. Having being such historically accurate does has its drawbacks. The room/floor doors as well as the elevator doors are very heavy to move and require quite a bit of force. Not so accommodating of younglings, elders or disabled people.
The room we were at faced the train station and, had it not been for the ear plugs, would have meant a harder sleeping night. The hotel does supply ear plugs for guests who need it. However, if you are a light sleeper, be advised...
- hing (4/5): - no maintenance at all. No AC over 90F.
Sky train right beside the building, I cannot close windows because no AC. it wont close until two am every night & starts at 5:30 am.
- Marc (10/5): - Old world charm, excellent attention by the hotel managers, will always return when away in New Westminster.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Interesting piece of history - The space was huge and overall comfortable. It’s an older building but that’s the charm. The area is noisy but conveniently located - there’s no air conditioning so the hot days resulted in hot nights. Some
Of the The dishes weren’t cleaned - classes and silverware. Otherwise clean and comfortable and I’d definitely stay again.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Exactly as advertised and reviewed - I really enjoyed my stay. Lots of room, full kitchen. Restored but vintage. Reminded me of a fort Edmonton type of hotel (for those Albertan's in the crowd). It definitely met our families needs, and the bottle of wine is a nice touch. Maybe not for you if you want modern, but a really cool experience. I would recommend.
- Josh (6/5): - Everything was great except for the mouse droppings all throughout the property and the "rodent" smell in the kitchen.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Very well kept - Old building so there is creaking but overall very good experience. The suite was clean and fully stocked
- Mike (10/5): - Great Heritage Building.
- Samuel (10/5): A delightful jewel of a hotel - This hotel is s delightful step back in time to 1912 with modern touches slipped in. Glen and Stuart are very gracious hosts. A very nice, comfortable stay. Only minus is the light rail going by every few minutes. That wasn’t there in 1912
