The atmosphere is peaceful and spa-like from the moment you walk in, with soft music playing and a request to remove your shoes at the entrance — a nice touch that adds to the calm vibe. The beds are comfortable, the towels soft, and the breakfast delicious. The only downside was the drip coffee, which was honestly the worst I’ve ever had — but thankfully, there’s also a coffee machine available, which made up for it. The shared facilities were well thought out: the ground floor has 5 or 6 showers, while the top floor offers one combined shower/restroom and a separate toilet. One thing we especially appreciated was how warm and cozy the place is — they’re definitely not stingy with the heat, so no need to worry about being cold

I'm not a big fan of sharing bathrooms but happily give 5 stars to this B&B. Thank you Inga, the owner's sister, for looking after us so we'll. We had read some bad reviews but it was about the owner before, the ownership has changed since and the currently run by lovely people. The lounge we used had a big TV, microwave, kettle, fridge, tea&coffee and plates&cutleries for us to use, very kind. Guests are asked to take shoes off but they have slippers for us. We saw northern lights 4 nights in a row on the decking area, didn't have to go anywhere else.

The rooms and common area were so well decorated and clean. We were new to the common area bathrooms but they were clean and tidy. Two thumbs up!

One side of the double bed is right up against the sloping ceiling, other rooms looked better suited. Also thousands of midges came into the room, I believe mozzy screens may be put up. Staff knew about this problem in this particular room. However all said, we had a lovely stay and will return next time we are in the area (but not in Room 3!!!)

• Srdjan (2/5): - I do not understand high reviews for this place. The house was built as a low-security women's prison in the 1980s and housed two women when it opened. Later, it was used as juvenile detention. We did not know this prior to staying. That vibe is still there. Rooms are small and old. You feel like you are in a dungeon. Our room was in basement, so I am not sure what are the rooms on the official website as all people were placed in the basement basically. Common room is also very dark and depressing. I would not recommend trying to sleep here. Someone turned on their ice cream truck to be charged overnight on the wall where we slept. Not possible to sleep at all.

The space was very clean and homey, with a nice room and lovely common spaces. Breakfast was delicious and the owners worked hard to accommodate my diet. We saw the Northern Lights there! But more than that, the owners were kind and helpful and responsive. We loved our time with them and cannot recommend it enough!

• Sonja (8/5): - I wished there was an employee to check me into the location. I would have preferred a top sheet on the bed and a cooler temperature would have been nice.
• Verified traveler (6/5): - The common areas were nice. They had books to read, but very cold since they didn't have the heat on. They only had a small heater next to one of the chairs. The only thing that made this stay very negative was when I went to throw away a paper bag, as I was checking out in the front door area, and I believe it was the owner that questioned me. He had asked me if I threw a way a bottle and I said no it is a paper bag. He said that it was just for bottles and there weren't any signs that said it was just for bottles. He then went to check and so I offered to take my paper bag out because I could tell he was bothered by it. He then said we will take care of it at night. I didn't like that I was being confronted like that when we have paid to stay there. If there was a sign, I would have not out my paper bag in the trash can.

• Verified traveler (6/5): - Bitra Bed & Breakfast property located short drive from Selfoss town in southern Iceland. Bitra Guesthouse located near road 1 with proximity to golden circle attractions. Bitra also features private parking, and breakfast. Breakfast selection was great and similar to other guest houses we stayed at in Iceland with oatmeal/cereal, toasts, eggs, cheese, hams, tomatoes, cucumbers, coffee, tea and juices. Breakfast was fulfilling and starts at 7:30 am sharp. Comparing to other guest house we stayed at in Iceland, our room was marginal quality and old. Floors squeaking, loud doors. Bed mattress appeared deformed and worn out. Bed sheets and towels were in a decent usable condition. Bathrooms and showers are in shared common area. Bathroom on 2nd floor was dirty with broken shower, empty old shampoo bottles, soaking wet rug, hair and water all over the bathrooms floor. Surprisingly staff onsite did not even bother to check and clean the bathroom/shower area during our stay. Hope Bitra staff will address bathrooms and shower condition and cleanliness issue. As mentioned above, Bitra located near road 1, which is major noisy road, you will need to close the window to block out the road noise for a night.
• Amanda (4/5): Don’t stay here. - Stayed in four different locations on this trip. This place was really a let down. It was expensive by comparison with others but the room, whilst spacious, was basic and the bathroom very shabby with exposed wires and very tired fittings. The place overall needs a complete make over. I definitely would not stay there again and I’m not particularly precious. The bed was not comfortable at all. We took the food option which was terrible. It was tepid student food and overpriced. Basically fish and mashed potato mixed together heated up ( it completely) and turned out on a plate. When I checked later what we paid for this room with en-suite, it was terrible value for money. More like a hostel than a B and B or hotel. The owner really needs to go and see what the general standard should be like. Overall, I was surprised that the rooms in Iceland were not better than they are, but this was one of those places you just don’t want to be.
• David (8/5): Great place to stay. - The stay was very enjoyable. The included morning breakfast was very good. We payed for a great dinner the wasn't that expensive. We got some good pictures of the horses around the yard. Rooms were clean and service great.

Stay is hampered by small rooms, few and distant bathrooms and a very poor quality expensive dinner. Choice of tough leather like lamb or smelly deep frozen salmon.

• TMAK (8/5): - It's nice that this property is outside the city. Lots of stars and no road noise. As far as properties that feel like private-room hostels, this is a very nice place to stay. Breakfast is good, and the staff were friendly and interesting.
• Michelle (6/5): - 3/5 - Was OK. Some positives: Room was clean and a bit tight on space, but sufficient for a one night sleeps. They also provided some fun board games and internet - which we appreciated. Included breakfast was good, similar options to other hotels in Iceland. Staff friendly and helpful. A few cars had a bit of trouble getting out of a snowdrift in the driveway in the morning. Staff worked really hard to tow them out and create a path for all our cars to leave safely in the morning. Some negatives: The walls of our room were very thin and I had a hard time falling asleep as my neighbour was snoring and I could easily hear it. Bathrooms also needed a bit of through cleaning, as the showers had some mold around the top of the ceilings. I recommend bringing flip flops. Finally, not the most comfortable pillows - but as I mentioned, ok for one sleep. NOTE: this house is on a hill and semi-plowed (like most guesthouses). Non 4x4 cars will have a bit of trouble getting up the hill.

I felt like they genuinely cared about their hotel guest whether by saying "Good morning" to you when they passed, or when they asked how your day was when you returned. They are great people and the hotel is a great place to stay. Will recommend to anyone.

• c (8/5): Good for Northern Lights - An excellent site for viewing the Northern Lights if they care to turn up. Not keen on having to wear slippers in the hotel though I suspect it would have been very noisy without that as it was a rather noisy hotel anyway. In particular there was some strange electrical hum that reached our room. Breakfast was OK.

Breakfast was unbelievable with lots of variety of fresh food - fruit, meats, cheese, herring, veggies, yogurts, grains, breads, etc. A staff member was right there to quickly replenish whatever was empty.

• Adrienne (10/5): - We booked last-minute after hitting some bad weather (we had been tent camping for nearly 2 weeks) and really lucked out that Bitra was available! From the warm welcome, to the comfortable bed & common areas, to the delicious breakfast in the morning, Bitra far exceeded our expectations. It was also very convenient - right off Rte 1 - while still being far enough from the road and town to have a real quiet, farmhouse feel. We'd definitely stay again.

• Rob (6/5): Nice place, but please fix the doors. - Bitra guesthouse was clean, and the amenities were exactly as expected. Our issue with our stay was the noise of squeaky doors, slamming doors (due to the I'll fitting doors that stuck in the frames), rattling keys (the large room fobs rattling against the doors everytime someone opened or closed a door) and very thin walls. Iim hoping it was only on our floor. t may seem pretty to complain of something seemingly so small, but it does impact a person's peace of mind at the end of the day.

We drove past the house on our way to the east coast and loved the setting and large house on a hill. Unknowingly we booked it last minute on our trip back to Reykjavik! • Rebecca (10/5): Great place! - Wonderful place less than 10 minutes outside of Selfoss. The owners were easy to talk to and were very welcoming. I would stay here again and would direct all of my friends here, too. The room was spacious and the beds were very comfortable. We were in a family room on the first level. It had a lot of natural lighting; the room temperature was perfect. All of us looked forward to breakfast as they had a gpod assortment of foods. Overall this was a great place to stay.
• Karen (2/5): - I have traveled around the world. This was by far the worst experience I have ever had. The host was extremely rude and hostile from the beginning. She did not only yell at us several times with no reasons, but also threw our belongings on the ground from the kitchen table. There were so many restrictions that I felt we were not being treated fairly the entire time. We arrived pretty late and sought the possibility to use the kitchen to make dinner. The host asked us to read the note on Orbitz again and said if it does not say we can use the kitchen, then it means we CANNOT use the kitchen. Okay, we got it that we should not use the kitchen. Since it's late and far from everything else, we asked whether there is dinner around. She coldly said NO. I then asked whether there is hot water we can use to make some instant food. She replied that there is a kettle to make tea or coffee but we CANNOT use it to make any soup. I don't think this is the right way to treat your customers.
• Sidney (8/5): country style, with aurora at your front door! - nothing but darkness for looking up at the sky for the aurora...no need to run around, only steps from your warm room, not bad. got some good pictures too. host may be an angry guy at first but once u get to know him, he is very nice! great breakfast, local dishes....fishy but not too bad. Thanks. some guess have to STOP taking shower together...got the floor all wet.......not cool.....
• Terry (10/5): Great facilites, wonderful hosts, smells delicious - The hosts at Bitra Guesthouse welcome you with the wonderful scent of numerous vanilla-scented candles lit in the main areas of the house. The guesthouse has numerous showers, a tea-making area outside of the rooms, and a large patio for viewing the spectacle of the Northern Lights. On the night of my stay there was a strong aurora forecast and our hosts turned off the lights up the long driveway and outside the house so that we could get the best possible view. I chose this property because of its location close to Selfoss and the Golden Circle but also because of its unique history of being built as a prison and used as a juvenile facility. Its architecture definitely shows that is was designed for purposes other than a residence. Very interesting!
• Steph (10/5): Cozy B&B, perfect for northern lights viewing - I stayed at this bed and breakfast with 3 friends for one night in October. We really enjoyed it because it was easy to find (it has it's own street right off of the main road, Road 1) and because it was distant enough from other places which made it dark enough at night to view the northern lights easily (we actually got to see them here!) We had a room for 4 that we found to be very comfortable. They had a heater that we could moderate the temperature on so even though it was about 40 °F outside, we were nice and warm inside. There was a shared barhroom on our floor that was always clean and we didn't have to wait long to use it, plus they had a hair dryer. The free breakfast was delicious and plentiful. They have the loveliest jams! Just remember to take off your boots/shoes at the front door so that the floor and stairs don't get messy (socks or sandals will do the trick). Overall, we had a wonderful experience and we definitely recommend it.
• Verified traveler (6/5): Nice hotel but disappointing staff - The hotel was alright. It wasn't great having shared facilities as it was really hard to find a shower and/or bathroom to use in the morning. The staff were disappointing. We got microwave meals from the grocery store and asked to use the kitchen facilities. We were not allowed to. There could have been a better effort on their part to accommodate us and provide some good customer service.

• Colin (10/5): Spacious Rooms and Great Hosts - Friendly hosts provide a delicious, plentiful breakfast buffet herring, cold cuts, boiled eggs and a variety of breads. Rooms are very spacious. We are a family of 4, and had a 2 bedroom unit with 4 bunk beds, 2 single beds and a queen! All very comfortable. No private bathrooms in the rooms, but shared facilities were clean and had good pressure and hot water. Coffee, tea available 24x7. Leave your boots by the door before going down to the guestrooms which are all in the basement of the house.
