Guest Reviews
- Donna (8/5): Great location - There’s room for 4 cars directly outside the property but as it’s in a nice residential area there was safe parking very close too. We only saw the staff briefly on arrival but she was very friendly and helpful. Good size clean room. Great location for us to go to the NEC. Lots of lovely places to eat in close walking proximity.
- Claire (6/5): Airport stay - Check in was a slip of paper with my name telling me the key was in the door. The entrance was really shabby but the room was ok, but does smell of damp. As a place to sleep before an early flight, the location was good for the airport. Felt expensive for the standard. Wouldn’t stay again.
- rupert (10/5): Wonderful - Very comfortable and welcoming. Lovely location with pub, restaurant and shops within 10 minute walk. Wonderful.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great little gem - Mary was very accommodating and helpful in making the stay very friendly
- Lynn (10/5): - Arrived late and left early, so really only slept there but had a very good nights sleep. We were welcomed, the room was lovely and clean, and quiet, and the bed very comfortable. It’s a shame we didn’t have a chance to experience the facilities, but perhaps next time when we have more time.
- Neil (10/5): - Good value accommodation in a pleasant location.
- Ian (8/5): - Just outside the pretty village of knowle. Convenient for dining options. Good parking.
- Kin S (10/5): - I did not expect the room to be so beautiful in a guest house. It looks better than many five stars hotel. I didn’t have a chance to meet the host as I checked in real late. But I was greeted with a very personal and friendly note. Felt welcome. Will stay again.
- Bunny (8/5): - Everything was good, the staff were welcoming, really helpful and friendly, there was relaxed atmosphere. The beds were clean and comfortable. I would stay again, or recommend it to others.
- Helen (6/5): - Strange not having a lockable entrance door. Lack of milk - none left in communal area on Sunday morning. Bedroom big and bright. Disappointed that no bath when details said there was. Clean and tidy
- eleni (8/5): - I arrived at the property very late as my flight had been delayed. I had been told that it would not be a problem to check in. I found a note with instructions which was thoughtful and helpful. The bed was soft and comfy, my room spacious and clean , it had an ensuite bathroom with a nice bath. My room was quite and spacious. Thank you for the noce experience.
- Ed (10/5): Great guest house - Lovely guest house , big comfortable bed , great shower . Quiet and friendly . Highly recommended
- Heather (10/5): - We stayed at Achill Guest House for one night before starting a canal boat trip from Alvechurch Marina. We appreciated that it is a family-run guest house with a funky charm one doesn’t find in a chain hotel, even if the walls are a little thin and we could hear our neighbors a little bit. Bed on the soft side but still slept well. Good location very close to a charming high street with Tudor era buildings, a pretty parish church and dining and breakfasting options (the bakery is fabulous). Very friendly and helpful owner.
- PETER (10/5): - Everything was as described and being able to use a fridge and microwave proved very useful.
The owner was excellent providing us with everything that we needed.
Highly recommend.
- Ross (10/5): - Very handy place to stay for our two-day event at the NEC. Friendly and helpful owner and very comfortable beds. The village is picturesque and has a good range of restaurants and pubs.
We'll hopefully be able to get a room here next time we're in the Birmingham area.
- Alison (6/5): Our 2 night stay in Knowle - Knowle is a lovely town with some great pubs and restaurants, the host was friendly and couldn't do enough for us, the room was clean and had everything we needed, beds very comfy. We could hear other guests in nearby rooms but it didn't bother us too much. The front door and entrance was very worn and didn't create the best first impression, but it wasn't expensive so we didn't mind. This town is really handy for the NEC and airport if you have a car, it saved us going into the City for food in the evenings.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Achill Guest House - Achill Guest House was nice and in a good location to explore. It was centrally located to various locations around Birmingham. Upon arrival, the host was hard to reach. She did not answer the doorbell or the phone at first. On the third call she came out and showed us to our room. She was very enthusiastic about her home and the area around it. The room was relatively clean. There were a few bugs and the towels were stained. The host did quickly replace them. The disco bath was funny but the shower curtain did have some mold spots on it which was unfortunate because there was no avoiding touching it due to how the shower was set up. On the second night, another guest parked in two spaces leaving no space for our car. We were able to get a spot on a side road near the home. There was also no hot water. We called the host multiple times before she picked up. She said she was out and told us to run the water because it takes a few min to turn on. There was still no hot water. She was out so her husband had to turn on the hot water. She seemed frustrated with us that the tank ran out despite us not being in for several hours that night. She said her tank held enough for 5 houses. Eventually the hot water returned at nearly midnight. The host did not further accommodate or acknowledge the issue despite knowing this was a work trip with early mornings. Reasonable stay but likely will not return.
- Neil (10/5): - Very nice place would recommend
- Su (10/5): A good find - Was pleasantly surprised by the room and happy to have my own entrance direct into it. I was met by a very friendly lady who could give me lots of insight into the area. Very clean and comfortable. I would stay again.
- Paul (8/5): - This property was ideal for our 1 night stay in prep for our visit to the NEC. Good location and easy walk to local shops, restaurants and pubs
- Sarah (4/5): Good location but in need of refurb - Great location for the NEC and eating out in the evening but the room was in poor condition. The bathroom window doesn’t close and there’s no heating in the bathroom. The bathroom door only closes from the inside. We arrived at 7pm on a chilly day and the heating hadn’t been on nor could we put it on so it was cold. We were awoken at 5am by people walking about overhead. But the beds were comfortable.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Does the job for a night, but very cold room - Room was a good size with a large comfortable bed, desk, en-suite bathroom and TV. However, the room was quite cold - particularly the bathroom which was freezing. Tea and coffee making facilities and a guide to the local area including restaurants, cafes etc was nice.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Room and bathroom could do with updating …comfortable but looks tired . Bathroom light pull needs replacing
- Verified traveler (8/5): Comfortable and Welcoming Guest House - Comfortable and Welcoming Guest House just off the high street.
Family owned establishment additionally offering a range of spa treatments.
Handy for walks along the grand union canal featuring the Knowle Locks
- Matthew (10/5): Great value - Friendly and helpful staff. Whilst it feels a little dated, the value for money was excellent, and would definitely stay again
- Verified traveler (4/5): Cheap, great location, cold room and no towels! - Given the reviews, I was disappointed with my stay. Room was freezing cold and the radiator was not on overnight. Curtains were very thin and let all the light in at 6.30am.
Worse thing though was no towels provided and couldn't get hot water!
It was a cheap deal and I'm going to say it was probably priced about right, rather than a bargain.
- Catherine (8/5): - Very comfortable bed, large bathroom with both bath and over-bath shower. Super easy communication with Mary. Easy access to the National Motorcycle museum for my conference. Easy walking access to shops, cafes and restaurants in lovely neighbourhood. My only negative would be that the microwave had old food on the glass rotating plate - this may have been left by a previous user between cleans. great to have access to fridge and microwave. Thank you for a very comfortable stay.
- Suzanne (10/5): Wonderful place to stay! - I had a lovely 2 night stay here, the owner couldn't do enough to ensure I had a lovely comfortable stay. The room was well furnished and clean. The kingsize bed and pillows were soft and very comfortable. Loved the disco lights bath feature! Towels, toiletries and kettle facilities all provided with easy access to extras if required. Also bonus use of fridge and microwave on the landing if required. Great guides for local facilities and recommendations on food places and things to do. The village itself was lovely and quiet. Fish and chip shop - brilliant food! 15 minute drive to NEC so ideal for what I needed and will be back again.
- Samantha (10/5): - We stayed for two nights with our grandson, had all the facilities we needed in our room and a local Toby carvery walking distance away for a quick and easy breakfast before we went out for the day.
Room was comfortable, clean and welcoming, tea and coffee facilities available. Grandson enjoyed the party lights around the bath!! No issues with parking.
Would definitely recommend.
- Jayjay (10/5): - I like every thing in the property
- Amy (10/5): - Fab property will be back thanks for a lovely stay
- Ian (8/5): - More than adequate for a short stay
- Shu Chun (10/5): - The staff at the beauty salon was very friendly and helpful while the owner was out. The property was very clean and we loved the hot tub!
- LJ (6/5): July 2024 stay - The lady running it was really nice and chatty and she cooked us a lovely full english breakfast, at an extra cost, which we didn't mind paying for. The stairs to our room were hazardous as there was no bannister & the last 2 stairs were a bit rickery. The room looked lovely, nice decor & lovely big tv on the wall and a nice sized bathroom. However, it was so hot in there as the sun beated through the big windows and it didn't cool down overnight. The bed was really low and very uncomfortable, like being on a huge marshmallow, so we hardly slept. It was, however, lovely & quiet and a really good location.
- Jill (8/5): One night stay - Very friendly and helpful kindly looking for items we forgot
only issue was en suite door wouldn't shut sure this could be adjusted easily
- Nicholas (10/5): - friendly greeting, and everything explained. very quiet and comfortable.
- T J (10/5): Great value - Very comfortable, quiet room. Well located for Knowle. Very good value
- Verified traveler (10/5): Relaxing - A pleasant, relaxed stay.
- Lindsey (8/5): Lovely place - Lovely place, warm welcome with lots of help and advice on places to eat and drink. Comfortable bed - very clean
- Kathryn (10/5): Ideal for Birmingham airport - Stayed for one night as travelling to Birmingham airport early morning. Good price and location to facilitate the early morning air port journey. The host was really nice and welcoming. Family room was clean and everything we needed for a nights stay.
- Paul (10/5): - Nothing at all to complain about
- Pete (10/5): Lovely welcome by Laura - Lovely place to stay, although we were a little late arriving we were welcomed by Laura. Obviously the room was still being decorated/updating, but would have preferred a shower for ease of climbing in and out , as it was a bit dodgy because the bath was a bit "slippery" after the shower. The massive bed was really comfortable, probably the best we have slept in on our stays. As with most places now, the breakfast was not included and maybe should be? Fortunately our evening meal tided us over until lunch on the way home. PS the "Disco bath" was novel 😂
- S (10/5): Amazing - Amazing host, very friendly. Did not disturb us for check out even though we left a little later.
- Derek (10/5): Quiet and comfortable - Extremely friendly, quiet and comfortable place to rest your head in the lovely village of Knowle
- Mick (8/5): Pleasant Hotel. - Nice clean room, big comfy bed.
Clean bathroom. Good reception on arriving.
- Brian (8/5): - I had 2 night stay. The place was clean, room was comfortable. Apart from the room there were no other facilities, e.g nowhere to sit, except in the room. It was ok for my 2 night stay. Price was good.
- Dawn (8/5): - Hopeful when phoned to say we wouybe late
Comfortable room and plenty of space
Good shower
- Robert (10/5): First Class - Warm, cozy and clean The whole stay was perfect friendly staff, comfy beds, clean good size room and a amazing breakfast. I would 100% recommend, good value for money
- Mark (10/5): Great stay - Room was fantastic and so was the host
- ROY (10/5): - Lovely large room with a very comfortable bed
- Brenda (10/5): - Our host Laura is wonderful. She is very helpful with any information we need for the area and is just an overall lovely person.
- Catherine (10/5): - Easy to locate from M42.
Conveniently to the village for food and exploration especially if interested in history.
We only wanted a room for a pre early departure from Birmingham airport which was a 15 minute drive away and will consider doing so again.
It was a very hot night so a fan had been provide. On the landing was a fridge, toiletries and extra tea & coffee etc.
- Celia (10/5): - Laura was a lovely host, very comfortable bed, lovely decorated room.
- Priyesh (10/5): - Very friendly and homely feeling about the place.
- Andreas (10/5): A short break - Friendly welcome, clean and well equipped room.
Great breakfast and excellent massage treatments.
- Tinu (8/5): - Quiet. Large & airy room.
- Heidi (10/5): Perfect stay - An amazing stay staff were friendly and very helpful.. couldn't do enough will definitely be coming back
- Gabriel (10/5): - Great place
- Lisa (8/5): - Nice clean, comfortable room, very comfortable bed. If I could find anything negative it would be the poor water pressure in the shower.
- Stephen (10/5): Wonderful Guest House. :) - Lovely stay at this wonderful guest house. Room was very nicely decorated with a very comfy bed and a lovely bathroom. Great location and friendly host to advise on amenities. Recommended.
- Mark (10/5): - One Word Excellant
- Sarah Lynne (10/5): - Delightful rooms and spa area - an unexpected gem!
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great stop over - Great service and lovely stay would definitely go again and try and use the facilities.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Good option for overnight stay - Very comfortable and clean - guys for our quick overnight stay.
- Ben (10/5): Brilliant Guest House - Stayed overnight attending concert locally .
Friendly host and everything fine. Would stay again when next in area.
- Francesca (10/5): - Very tastefully done. Homely but clean and professional.
Loved the lights in the bathroom and the little touch of providing muscle soak 😊
- Chris (8/5): - Stay was very nice good location for my visit.
- JOHN (10/5): - Had to attend a meeting on Saturday at the N.E.C.
This place was great. A quick walk to the town, pubs, resturants and shops on your doorstep.
- Trevor (10/5): - Excellent location. Easy parking. Nice room. Very quiet. Good value. Thank you.
- Richard (10/5): - The bed was nice & comfortable & we slept very well and Mary could not have been more helpful and friendly.
- Verified traveler (10/5): A great stay - Very comfortable beds, charming hosts, great breakfast and the spa is an unxpectedly welcome surprise!
Definitely will be back.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Diddicult to imagine how the service could have been better; cheerful and accommodating.
- Matthew (10/5): - Lovely (albeit brief) stay. Great location, lovely plush room. Highly recommended if visiting the Midlands.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Pleasant stay - Have stayed here before and was impressed last time, hence the staying again. Once again the accomoadtion was as required, it was clean, comfortable and very pleasant.
Only disappointement was the commmunication prior to the stay. Sent 2 emails, no reply and left one phone message - no reply, all to enquire about breakfast times. Didn't have a single response from the hotel.
We were asked on arrival if we wanted breakfast and when we said that would be nice, we'd like it at 7am, we informed that the chef didn't come in until 8am!!
Other than that a very pleasant stay.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Suburban Bolthole - Very handy place to stay near the destination I needed to be at the following day. Large room, very comfy bed - had a choice! All facilities worked. Welcoming host who explained everything clearly. Stained wood floor with no carpet - trod carefully to avoid noise. Everything spick & span, plenty of extra refreshments & washing essentials.
Quiet location, left very early so no chance to sample breakfast. Someone in the area had a wood burner whose 'fumes' permeated the area. Meant having a window open was at the risk of everything smelling of wood smoke - unfortunate.
- Christina (10/5): - Ideally located for visiting the area or just passing through. Friendly family run hotel. Lovely well decorated comfortable bedrooms.
- Richard (10/5): Perfect. What else can I say! - Lovely cozy place to stay with so much attention put into all the details. Room was lovely with A1 bathroom, lovely comfy queen bed, beautiful lights and features, clean, fresh and tidy.
What I always want from an overnight stay but rarely find.
Well done to Achill house for providing one of the nicest environments I’ve found in recent years owned and run by extremely friendly people.
- Verified traveler (8/5): THE ARNOLD - Had a 3 night stay here so we could attend an NEC event. Perfect location.
- Ross (10/5): Thumbs up! - Clean, simple and quiet. Just what I required.
- shirley (6/5): - Loved the Beauty treatments , complimentary drink, massage chair, outside breakfast area and the breakfast . The breakfast was especially nice as it was gluten and dairy free.
Didn’t like the broken window, dripping dirty shower head and dirty pull ring.
The dusty floor, dirty curtains, spiders and spiders webs in the floor and ceiling corners! Plus the wrinkled and stained bedding. I cleaned the floor, bed head, sink and surfaces with my sanitising wipes. Also used my own pillowcase and ‘onezy’ kept my body making minimal contact with the unkempt bedding.
Such a shame as the hostess Mary was wonderful. Appreciate her acceptance of the initial faults and will discuss the poor hygiene of my room. Apparently had a new cleaner, but really as a guest was coming I would have checked the cleaners work!
- Thomas (10/5): - Fantastic find. Beautiful guest house with friendly owner. Brilliant price. Only tiny negative is the bathroom window which we couldn’t lock shut which we were wary of with a toddler. If we’d have been in the room longer we’d have mentioned this but it really was a minor issue.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - VERY GOOD WELL STAY AGAIN
- Matthew (10/5): Lovely stay - Recently stayed in room 5, nice big comfortable queen and, Room was very clean and the bathroom was excellent. Would highly recommend staying her. Owners were very friendly
- Alice (10/5): Fantastic! - Little gem of a place. Fabulous well equipped room, immaculately clean. Helpful, friendly host. Great value!!
- Kev (8/5): Nice place & good location - Business trip to Birmingham airport so excellent location only 15 min drive.
The Guest house and room was clean and tidy with plates, cutlery and a small fridge left out for patrons to use.
The town centre is a 2 min walk, with grocery shops, pubs/bars etc. Also a 20 min walk to the Grand Union Canal if you like the walk.
- Alice (10/5): Fabulous little guest house - What a little gem of a place! The room was absolutely lovely, well equipped, attractively decorated and comfortable. The owner was friendly, welcoming and helpful. Very convenient location, would definitely use again.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Nice and friendly welcome. Clean and tidy facilities. Laid back host
- Verified traveler (10/5): - nice guest house
easy going
no problem will use again
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Good service, quick check in, clean and quiet room. Nothing was a problem for the staff.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The price of the room staff were friendly room was clean
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Ok stay, but room could have been a lot cleaner! Stained towels were also a bit off putting.
- Alison (10/5): A gem of a find - What a lovely guest House. Mary was friendly and welcoming. Bed comfy and lovely bath and shower. I'll be back.
- Elisabeth (10/5): Great Stay in Knowle - Excellent stay, beautifully refurbished rooms, excellent service great location and amazing value. Couldn’t ask for more.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Lovely room, lovely people. Perfect for a stay. A real surprise as it was so reasonable
- Gillian (10/5): Happy to stay again - Comfortable, clean room, lovely breakfast, friendly hostess. Only 15mins drive from the NEC
- josephine (10/5): - room was spacious, beds very comfy, could of done with a clean shower curtain and a non slip mat in the bath as it was quite deep to get in and out of but overall enjoyable stay
- Verified traveler (10/5): - My room was very comfortable. My full day there involved a very early departure and equally late arrival, both of which were easily facilitated. The breakfast is a bargain at £5
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Peaceful location. Walking distance to everything.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The house was good value for money. It had everything that i expected.
- IanB (10/5): - Stayed for 2 nights in room 5. Super king bed and a lovely, spacious en suite. Breakfast was well worth the extra £5, well presented, good quality and quantity. Mary, the hostess, is lovely. Friendly, eager to help and very informative about local amenities.
The staircase is not easy for those with mobility issues (not a criticism, just for information) but there are two ground floor rooms which can be requested.
Achill is very handy for Solihull and the NEC. Eating places are plentiful within a 5 minute stroll. My wife and I would not hesitate to recommend this guest house to anyone and we will definitely return if we are in the area.
