- Timothy (6/5): - The booking was made through Expedia with filters applied for 4 star hotels. There was a sign on the property indicating 4 star Inn. The sign was probably 20 years old or more. This is a pub with some letting rooms. Ours was in a converted outbuilding. Billed as a luxury double with garden views. The room was cramped, a double bed, 2 bedside cupboards, one bedside lamp. A dressing table with one chair, tea and coffee facilities. There was no wardrobe only an understairs alcove with a short hanging rail and 4 hangers. The door to the bathroom was swollen and needed a shoulder barge to open and close it. The toilet roll holder was hanging off the wall, etc. The bedroom carpet was badly stained in places. The 2nd night someone was in the room above and could be heard moving around - in fairness that could have been a lot worse. The garden is non existent; 3 rooms share a small fenced area with 3 trestle table and bench sets that have seen better days, set on a few paving slabs with gravel surround. Beyond the fence is a children's playground. The bed was comfortable and linen and towels clean but no one came to clean and tidy the room between nights. Breakfast of scrambled eggs and bacon on toast was fine but served in a cereal bowl! Coffee was dire. Try the Coastal Cafe in town which opens at 9. Internet service was poor and intermittent. You have to walk past smelly bins at the back to get to the rooms. In short this was far from a 4 star hotel although priced much the same.

- Christine (8/5): - The victory at Mersea is a nice holiday hotel in a really nice location. We walked to sandbank holiday resort along the beach and walked back through the little town. We will definitely be back again as we still have a lot we want to see. A friendly island, with plenty to do. We stayed in room 8 which was noisey during the day as a childrens play park right next door, but we were out most of the day, but would be too noisy for elderly people. Had 2 breakfasts included in the price which were big and delicious. Highly recommend, just make sure the tide is out or have to wait before crossing the bridge.

The only downside for us was that there was a high level of noise from a band (I assume) playing in the bar downstairs which we found irritating when trying to settle down to sleep. Otherwise we were very happy with the hotel.

- Verified traveler (6/5): Nice Stay - I really enjoyed my stay at the Victory. There are lots of positives about this bed and breakfast. Cleanliness could be looked at. Throughout the site, there were lots of cobwebs both in the dining room and in the room I stayed in. The staff, super friendly, were very helpful. However, there was a lack of experience with some younger staff not knowing where the extra toilet roll was. There was no welcome pack or information card in the rooms, so I was unsure of how to use the WiFi and the irregular timing of the restaurant (understandable as it's a small community) made me unsure of whether it would be open or not. Lots of places close at 5 in the area. Communication could be improved (no response via the questions sent in message centre on hotels.com). I liked my room and I was very surprised about the size of the bathroom, however the shower had very low water pressure. There are no fans to use or borrow, so I brought my own. Luckily there was a strong wind during the time I there. There is a lovely area to sit outside and it's close to the beach where I spent a lot of my time. The area is in dire need of a small convenient store as the closest one is about a 14 or 15 minute walk away from the area. Lots of really great restaurants in the area, including the Victory itself. Don't forget anything! Cars would be helpful to get around the area as there is not a lot of public transport or taxis.
- Deborah (4/5): - Room very nicely renovated but spoilt by a really grubby balcony (which we had paid extra for) with overflowing ashtray on the table. Service very friendly but very odd hours of service - we had been told food served until 8.00 pm, but when we tried to order at 7.30 the manager said we were too late! She kindly managed to get the chef to provide a course but we felt rushed. In the morning despite notice on the door saying breakfast served at 8.30 we got down to the dining room to find no one around, same member of staff was on shift starting at 8.30 and said breakfast not served until

- Valerie (10/5): - We found the Victory Inn at Mersea to be very comfortable and the service was brilliant. Staff were especially helpful and the position was great for my 6 year old grandson as he spent lots of time in the play area and we could keep our eye on him. We will definitely be booking again for sometime in the summer for a longer stay.

- Carolyn (6/5): A small victory - Loved the position, had a balcony overlooking the estuary. Staff very friendly. Needs extra attention to cleanliness. Shower drain not cleaned, water collected in the tray couldn't run out quick enough. Tea tray not clean and cobwebs above the bed.

- Mark (6/5): - We stayed for 3 nights. The room was never cleaned. The tea cups never washed. We asked for the bathroom radiator to be turned on so that we could dry our towels. Not done. No real ale as they had an issue with the lines; as did Coast ( another pub locally) which begs me to wonder if the pipes were ever cleaned!!
- Linda (8/5): A great one night stay. - We have stayed her before and we will stay again. A lovely location by the sea. Very efficient and friendly staff. A few issues with room (no.5), water not draining from bath, mirror light not working. I know maintenance will be sorting these out soon, probably already sorted! Wonderful cooked breakfast in the morning.
- Raul (8/5): - We have stayed at The Victory three times now, it is very convenient if you want to go out for food around West Mersea and don't want to worry about driving. Plus it is close to the seafront walk of West Mersea Beach. Rooms are very clean, plus you have the advantage that they are part of a pub, therefore the ability to step down for a drink or food at any point.
- dawn (10/5): Great value for money - We had room 9 which had an upstairs with twin beds as well as the double room down stairs. Plenty of space for just my friend and I. Beds very comfy, and we loved having our own outside space at the back. We couldn't put our finger on what the slight odour was in the room, but it didn't spoil our stay, so we didn't report it. The breakfast was absolutely gorgeous! as was our meal the night before. This place is very good value for money, and I would stay here again.

- Martin (10/5): A Victory for The Victory - I only stayed one night but I cannot fault the experience. The staff members were very friendly and helpful and the room was warm, clean and comfortable. I slept really well! Breakfast was plentiful and the full English looked amazing but more than I could cope with. I settled for Eggs Benedict and coffee, which was plenty to keep me going for the morning. Wouldn't hesitate to stay again.

- Jan (8/5): A stay away - We were made welcome on arrival and helped to our room with our bags. We enjoyed the balcony with a view and the comfort of our room, although the space was limited. There was a tiny space for clothes hanging and nowhere to store cases or bags. The bathroom was lovely and was very clean. We had a good breakfast and an evening meal which was disappointing, the menu was short of fresh options and lacked imagination. The attention to detail was poor regarding the food & service and really needs to improve. The staff were engaging and friendly, happy to help. The location is good and there are other local places to eat nearby.

The room was clean and comfortable, bathroom nice shower was HOT and powerful, certainly no complaints. Location for what we required couldn't be better. We will be coming back in the future.

We had stayed here years ago but I don’t remember the rooms being so small, I think they’ve all been refurbished and are all small now although they do have good size bathrooms. It was fine for one night but wouldn’t want to stay longer in such a small room. Food was good and plentiful (we really wouldn’t have ordered a starter had we known!)

- Alan (10/5): Mersea Island weekend - I booked an accessible room as my wife uses a wheelchair but can walk short distances with 2 walking sticks. We found the Garden Room No. 7 was ideal for our purposes. They were flexible regarding breakfast items and were happy to accommodate variations on the listed menu.

- Dawn (8/5): Overnight stay - I found the hotel comfortable with friendly staff who were obliging. Its a striking building with nice views. We only stayed one night, we were attending a friends wedding. The rooms are modern and fresh looking if not a little overpriced. I realise this is essex and tjere aren't many options on Mersea but £140 per night is high. I guess if we all pay it it will not change. The breakfast was delicious and again the staff were obliging. The tables in the restaurant are tacky to the touch and i noticed one staff member spraying some kind of chemical all over the table then wiped it off with paper, it was a bit over the top and would be better if it was rinsed off with water....no more sticky tables. Anyway overall a great night.
- Caroline (6/5): Disappointing..... - Unfortunately we didnt sleep very well, the bed was uncomfortable, the room was hot, (it didnt help that the towel rail was on full blast). A fan in the room would have helped. The bathroom mirror light & extractor fan didnt work & needs attention. People smoking outside directly below us, so the smell of cigarette smoke wafted up to our room, l realise not much can be done about that. On a positive note the full english breakfast was delicious.
- Linda (4/5): Our twin-room was not good - I'm sure there are much nicer rooms at the Victory, but, unfortunately for us, they were not available. We requested a double room, but were given a twin room as it was the only one available. The carpet on the floor was very dirty and stained. The beds were tiny and on opposite sides of the room. The lamp-shade was tatty. It was cold and raining when we stayed, so we looked for heating. The option was a plug-in electric heater, but the legs had come off, so we had to balance the heater precariously on the feet. The bathroom door handle came off in my hand. The sink was grubby. The shower temperature wasn't consistent. The toilet seat did not fit the toilet. The breakfast was OK and the staff were friendly, but the room we stayed in needs a lot of attention.

- Karen (10/5): Bank Holiday Sunday - Popped down bank holiday Sunday weather was fab, checked in all on time, room lovely and clean. Beds comfortable and a lovely full english breakfast before our departure

- Judith (6/5): A little disappointing - Was a tad disappointing in that we slept very poorly. The dinner the night before seemed to have been warmed in a microwave as our cod has soft wet batter. The staff were friendly and we had a nice hot shower.
- TREVOR (8/5): Small room but pleasant stay - The room was quite small with only a double bed but it was very clean and tidy, the en-suite was modern, clean and big enough but could have done with an extractor fan. Staff were friendly and helpful. The batter was burnt in the evening meal but otherwise food was good. Plenty of tea/coffee facilities in the room with decent sized cups (unusual for recent hotel stays) with extra tea, coffee etc on a table in the hall outside the room. Room was a bit stuffy during the night so had to open the balcony door - balcony shared with two other rooms but fortunately they were unoccupied that night. Free parking at the front of the building.

- Chris (4/5): A disappointing stay this time - Have stayed here many times before but on this occasion the room was so cold which made sleeping and general room comfort not very pleasant. Also the room was not cleaned or maintained during the stay which the price did not reflect this. With this in mind had planned to stay again this week but have booked elsewhere. On a positive note the service and food at breakfast and supper was awesome.

The only down side was that kitchen fans were on under or by our room until 10pm ish and then again from 8am ish. This was balanced out by the fact that we had a small private balcony with a lovely side sea view. Room was very comfy, staff all lovely …

- Verified traveler (6/5): Choose your room! - This is a very nice pub that has had an expensive make over. The staff are friendly and work hard to try to ensure good service. When I booked the only room with outside space that was available was the suite which is spacious and has a modern bathroom with bath. However, the outside space was a large terrace that over looked the children’s playground and outside tables. Not a problem. The problem was the smell of cooking as the kitchens were just underneath our room. There were bins there as well but a member of staff moved them when I complained. As you will see from the photo the view was somewhat obstructed by the banks of solar panels on the roof to our left. None of this should deter anyone from staying at this pub just don’t pay the extra for the suite/ room 5! We ate here on our second night and the food was fine with good service.
- Stuart (4/5): Nice enough place, just be warned if you eat here. - Room was nice but not clean, didn’t check draws before putting clothes in, they were covered in dust when we took them out. The whole room could of done with some TLC. The staff were friendly enough. It must be difficult getting back up and running post lockdown and maybe they still have cleaners furloughed. But this was no excuse for the restaurant, after ordering the 1st alarm bell sounded, most of the unattended plates were unfinished, in hope more than expectation we thought the portion size might be the reason. The 2nd bell sounded as the young lady cleared 2 tables and returned to wipe them over with the same cloth and no disinfectant of any sort, which was concerning in these COVID days. This was enough for my partner to want leave, unfortunately I persuaded her to stay. Then the meal arrived, which will live long in the memory. The burger was worse than any football burger I’ve ever seen and I’ve seen some pretty bad ones knocked up over the years. The chips I can only presume were from plates of other patrons that also couldn’t eat them, but they must of been warmer when they had them. The garlic bread, may of been in the same kitchen as some garlic but doubt they came into contact and it also avoided the grill as it was literally bread and I felt pity for the sad looking onion rings. We took1 bite and left. It tasted as bad as it looked. The only other place we could get something at the time was Cowabunga pizza, which was really good as pizza go. Give it a go🍕

- Alex (8/5): - Rooms new, very clean, and in good condition. It is a pub so expect a bit of noise until close, you do get the benefit of a drink without having to drive. Close to the main oyster restaurants and the beach.

The breakfast was excellent, probably the best we’ve had in England. The staff we dealt with were extremely helpful and courteous.

- Verified traveler (6/5): - Room was nicely decorated with all one could want and is recommended. However, breakfast was a disappointment. No pot of tea, just a cup each. Toast served on the breakfast instead of separately. By the time the breakfast, which to be fair was very nice, arrived the tea was cold. No condiments and none offered, had to scrounge from a virtually empty bottle of sauce found on another table. The bar is a disaster. The barman didn't seem to understand the concept of a double brandy with ice. What he served up was the colour of orange juice. We were the only customers in the bar at 10pm on a Thursday night and it's not surprising. Could be great, but it's not.

- RJ (6/5): - The Victory was in a fabulous location overlooking the sea but the pub itself was nothing special. The bin in the Ladies toilet was overflowing with rubbish which was a huge fail. Our room was basic but clean and the beds were comfortable. Old fashioned brown bed valances could do with updating. The shower pressure wasn’t great and the silicone on the shower tray was blackened. Full English was very good with decent quality sausages. Staff were young and friendly.

- Linda (8/5): A lovely one night stay. - The room was small but comfortable with a good shower room. We enjoyed the shared balcony with lovely views over the Estuary. We only stayed one night but would definitely stay again if ever we return to Mersea Island, which we hope to do some time in the future. We didn't have dinner in the hotel as there were many other restaurants in the area. We had breakfast which was adequate.

- Verified traveler (4/5): - The Hotel was good, but the food was dreadful I must say, we had lunch the day we got there was not good, in the morning we had breakfast the scrabbled eggs we had was not cooked properly the toast was not toasted and spelled of bacon fat so therefore we won’t stay there again🙁

We stayed in room 1, very nice comfy, airy room simple clean decor, with hi spec bathroom, love it! 10 out of 10. The location is excellent right on the harbour, with West Mersey Oyster Bar just across the road. We had hours of fun, and entertainment watching the going’s on on, and around the river, and the views of the sunset this time round were incredible! Love Mersea Island, have returned many times over the years, a special place in Essex filled with special people ❤️, the Victory is the perfect place to relax, and explore this wonderful place. Will be returning very soon.
- Helen (10/5): Fabulous stay in a beautiful location - Fabulous stay at this lovely hotel. We booked at short notice, liked the look of the place and were lucky to find there was a room available. The room was small but very comfortable and there was the added bonus of having a balcony with a sea view. The en suite bathroom was perfect and the products provided were really fabulous. I liked the fact that they were all in refillable larger bottles instead of the smaller single use bottles which are so wasteful. The food at The Victory was also very good. I'd certainly stay here again if in the area

They managed to find an 'emergency' room for us which was barely bigger than the bed and overlooked the back car park - Not the sea view on we ordered. The manager did try but our weekend was completely ruined by a mess up either at Ebookers or at the hotel. I wont be using Ebookers again.
