Guest Reviews
- Elliot (6/5): - The room was clean enough, but not spotless. A mark on the sheet, cobwebs etc, but all hygienic. The room smelt slightly damp.
With that out of the way, the service was friendly, the room was a good size and bed comfortable, shower excellent. It was all adjoined to a lovely village pub in a great location.
- Karen (8/5): Good stay - Lovely traditional pub, friendly staff
- Lorna (6/5): Pleasant - Pleasant & quiet. Comfy bed, good shower.
Shame no fresh milk nor anyone to ask for any in the morning. No one to hand over key to.
Simple no cost things like removing ugly signs from room would improve it.
- Daniel (10/5): - Great place.. love the quiet English pub setting
- Mary (6/5): Lovely setting & menu though rooms not clean! - This was our 2nd stay here as not much else in the area though this time they had not linked us together & blamed hotels.com even though they did remember us from last year. Rooms & bathrooms are not clean & I had to wrestle with a massive wolf spider in my room this year, whereas last year were lots of cellar spiders! Lots of cobwebs to get rid of above the bed which wasn’t even comfortable, noted that some bathrooms have been refurbed now though if they’re not kept clean they won’t last. Food is to a good standard with a varied menu, though we will not stay next year now.
- Suzanne (6/5): Ok stay - Room was covered in cobwebs.dead flies on the windowsills.lightbulb missing in wall light.tired worn carpet.old mould stains in shower.friendly staff in pub.evening meal in the pub was nice.
- Jamie (10/5): - Great pub and great staff
- Verified traveler (10/5): Perfectly imperfect - The rooms are perfectly imperfect in my opinion, lovely place to stay, rooms are more homely than a like for like hotel. Bear in mind the surroundings that contribute to the impossible task of keeping these rooms 100% spotless.
Wonderful place would definitely visit again.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Lovely hotel - Room was clean and comfortable
- Helena (10/5): Family trip - This is a wonderful thatched roof hotel, so old and quaint. Beds were super comfortable, room clean if a bit dated. The pub was wonderful, food was great. Highly recommend for authentic english experience.
- Frederick (10/5): - Great stay as we travelled down to the South West. Friendly atmosphere, good food, and lovely location.
- Peter (8/5): - The Hat het is a loverly picturesque pub/ hotel. Welcome excellent, food and ambiance perfect. VFM good. The thing that let it down was cleanliness of the room- smeared bathroom mirror looked like it was cleaned with a soiled cloth ( had to clean it to see any reflection!) the toilet rim covered in hair & dust & the lamp shades & corners of the room rife with cobwebs.
We did enjoy our stay however and we did report the room dissatisfaction to the young service lady but no apology or explanation from the landlord?
Dogs welcome on a lead in bar & rooms.
- ROBERT (10/5): - Good beer, Good menu, good food. Excellent breakfast.
There was an open mic evening when we stayed, which was very entertaining.
Loved our stay, will do it again soon.
- Jacqueline (8/5): - It was our 3 time in staying at the hatchet inn it was good ,but not its usual standard ,the room above us which was no 3 the occupant decided to go bed at midnight waking us up ,by banging doors running up and down the stairs making a lot noise in the room this went on for 2 hours ,then at 4 am they started being noisy again didn’t get much sleep ,it did ruin our stay
- David (10/5): Great place to stay if you like old English - Excellent place to stay lovely surrounding's great service great food and drink quiet location
- Kevin (10/5): Great hosts - A tucked away stay where the noise of silence and occasional birdsong was fantastic. Great hosts all the way from check in, through dinner, plentiful breakfast and check out.

- Jack (10/5): - As always, the stay here was excellent with pleasant staff and good food. Will be staying again next month and the only thing I could suggest for improvement would be the shower door and handset in room 6.
- Lyndee (10/5): - Beautiful thatched inn with the accommodation only heard the sounds of the country it was so amazingly quiet
- Verified traveler (10/5): Hatchet is 100% worth a visit - This is a beautiful looking old inn, with great food. It is popular with locals and I have stayed 3 times on work trips and will continue to use it in the future.

- Roderick (10/5): - Idyllic thatched country inn in quiet hamlet. Staff were friendly and helpful. Ambience in the bar and restaurant areas was great.
- Piotr (8/5): - Great los pub. Beautiful gardens around the property. Great size room. Bathroom needs updating for sure. Good food and great staff specially Fiona.
- Robert (4/5): - The room we stayed in smelled like mildew. Took our luggage to the car rather than leave in room. Room #1. Food was good. Beer choice fine. Nice old pub.

- Herminder (10/5): Beautiful place with friendly staff & good food! - Just searched for some way to stay on the way home. Found this as it looked so pretty in the pictures, it was the same in real life. Beautiful traditional pub, great food. Lovely friendly staff. Lots of dogs around which was great! Had an overcharge accidently and before I was home the pub had called to say they needed to refund. Would highly recommend ! Thanks
- Wendy (6/5): - Was a beautiful pub… food was ok. Our room was damp and cold. Shower was tiny. Wouldn’t use it as it was so cold and damp we didn’t want to get in it. Couldn’t work the radiator either.
- Robert (10/5): - Very hospitable with great staff
- Ian (8/5): Hatchet - Staff friendly and helpful food was very good
- Garry (8/5): - Nice quiet location and lovely looking property.
- Philip (10/5): -
- kenneth (6/5): - like another 3 star review I was disappointed with the actual room offered. It was musty damp and not in the main building shown in photo. the room needed a major cleaning. the staff and food were fine.
- mark (10/5): Excellent 2nd visit - Great location, lovely place. Wonderful hosts, see you next year!
- Lynne (10/5): Overnight stay - Food really good quality, staff friendly. Lovely clean, comfortable room in thatched annexe. Thankfully others staying were very quiet, as hardly any soundproofing
- Carole (10/5): - A most enjoyable experience in a quiet setting. Meals were excellent, service fast and friendly, and the locals were fun, friendly and helpful. Highly recommend for a perfect stay!
- Ian (10/5): Good value overnight stay - Quaint thatched pub hotel with nice bar and bar meals. Friendly team.
Room was small but clean and functional
- James (10/5): - Food and service 1st class , management and staff very friendly , definitely will be back
- William (10/5): Great stay - Great stay as always - clean and comfortable room - lovely good and good service
- Simon (8/5): Beautiful country pub - Beautiful old pub in a quiet setting. Great choice of beers, good food and great breakfast. Soundproofing of room in the annex (from slamming doors and neighbours) could be better.
- Derek (10/5): - Brilliant amazing will be back there soon
- Geoffrey (10/5): Brilliant Christmas/New Year stay - Excellent pub/hotel. Staff were all friendly and helpful. Room had plenty of space and had everything you need.
A great breakfast was included in the room price and there was a choice of cooked options including full English.
The pub had a great atmosphere and was everything you'd expect of the ideal country pub. The menu had a lot of options and the food was well cooked and very tasty.
- Shiladitya (10/5): - great stay; very quiet; just what we needed. we stayed there with my wife and teenage daughter. food was awesome (huge american like portions).
- Neil (10/5): Looking to book again, as it is so nice. - Lovely place, a delightful little pub, lovely people, great open fire, food was great, highly recommend the liver and bacon. Good Beer. Room was very nice, bed very comfortable . Breakfast, was very good and large, do not plan on having lunch after it. Will be booking again. Ideal for people driving the lanes around the area.
- James (10/5): - Great place, great staff, great food, great room(s), great everything!!
- David (10/5): Comfortable, gentle, relaxed stay. Plan to return. - 2 night weekend stay. Room was 1 of 4 in cottage adjacent to pub. Reasonably spacious, usual amenities. Comfortable bed, quiet. Relaxed feel. Staff are lovely, friendly, very helpful, chatty, courteous and competent. Breakfast was excellent. Traditional experienced landlord who sat for a chat during breakfast. Dinner was good, varied menu with lots of specials. Real ales. Traditional old English country pub. Lowish beams, inglenook fireplace and another log fire. Very much a locals pub we were made to feel welcome and included with gentle banter. First Friday of the month local bands play and we were fortunate to stay at that time. Band was very good and layout of the pub enabled you to sit far enough away to both hear the band and chat to your partner. My wife and I were in need of a break away and The Hatchet fitted the bill perfectly. We were quite taken with the whole ambience of the place and most certainly plan to return. Prices are fair and reasonable for rooms, food and beverages.
- Martin (10/5): Best Breakfast Ever! - Stayed here for a couple of days on business. Firstly I have to say there was nothing negative about my stay other than a slight issue about the bed being too firm for my personal liking. The rooms are large and well equipped. Nice bathroom and the staff are fantastic. The place is really quiet and peaceful which is ideal for a business traveller. One other thing I have to add, the most pleasurable thing about staying away is a nice breakfast in the morning, I must say I specialise in food safety and quality standards and this is certainly no Premier Inn, this place has one of the best breakfasts I've ever had in a hotel. 5 stars from me, I look forward to visiting again.
- Simon (10/5): - Excellent Hotel lovely friendly staff made us very welcome. Would highly recommend a stay in
- Anthony (10/5): - Warm welcome and a very big thank you to Jeremy who was super helpful. Thank you.
- Michael (10/5): Nice pub with rooms in the Hampshire countryside. - Very comfortable room and very friendly staff & landlady in the pub / restaurant. Well worth a visit.
- Mary (10/5): Get away from the rat race - Great cooked breakfasts, we opted for poached or scrambled egg, excellent freshly made coffee, the host had excellent local knowledge. It is a lovely quiet location with easy access to many local attractions. A genuine 13th century thatched building with lovely planting of flowers. Great staff who were really helpful.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Excellent
Very friendly
Great food
Lovely room
- mark (10/5): Fabulous location - Stayed for the weekend recently to go to Thruxton for motor racing. Lovely place to stay and eat. Service was excellent with lovely staff. Minor gripes were shower not very powerful and bed was small and not the most comfortable.
- Kevin (10/5): - We stayed at the hatchet inn for a long weekend for bsb at thruxton and i cant fault it the staff were very friendly and helpful the food was excellent the rooms are cleaned daily and comfortable will definitely stay there again i would highly recommend it
Many thanks

- Stephen (8/5): - Fabulous building dating to the 13 Century. Room and ensuite "OK", but a bit tired. Could do with a makeover
- Keith (10/5): - A very comfortable stay in a beautiful location.
- shane (8/5): superb B & B. - The Hatchet Inn is a beautiful B&B. The staff were excellent very friendly. The room was spotless,The Breakfast was very nice. My only gripe is that the drinks are very over priced, my wife & i had a can of coke each & were charged £3 a can. I also heared someone ask how much a pint of Guiness was & he was told £10. I dont think charging extortionate prices for a drink should be allowed. I did say that we would use this establishment again but this has put me off of going back .
- Tristan (10/5): - Very welcoming, enjoyable stay.
- john (10/5): - Beautiful pub comfy bed great full english. Cant wait to return
- Keith (6/5): - Very picturesque pub, food excellent. However, room 5 had a strong horriblle damp musty smell, really quite unpleasant. Would not have stayed in this room for another night! Shame really, let the place down Im afraid.
- Peter (10/5): Idyllic. - Perfect one night stay. Someone should tell the chef how to cook calves liver.
- Lyn (10/5): - Great food. Comfortable room. Friendly staff. Everything exactly as promised
- Ed (8/5): - Nice and clean and friendly staff, good food and selection of beers
- Sarah (4/5): Lovely to look at from outside, stay outside! - The noisest hotel i have ever stayed in!! Doors banging, listening to people up and down stairs, could here them peoe in the.room above using the toilet, showering every floor board creaked!!
- Janice (10/5): - A lovely hitel. Great service and the bed was a great nights sleep. Bonus for me x
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The room was in need of a good clean.Cob webs etc
- Duncan (10/5): Fantastic Inn - Friendly staff, wonderful atmosphere, comfy beds.
Had dinner and breakfast in the pub, good food and good drinks, will definitely be going back!
- Amanda (10/5): - The area is beautiful. Bed was very comfortable. Breakfast was delicious. I would definitely stay again. Thankyou
- Caroline (6/5): Definitely a foodie find - Without doubt a favourite foodie spot in a beautiful building in a quiet village. The food was fabulous and reasonable. If a bit more effort was put into the rooms it would be worth £125per night rather than £95. Fixtures and linen were quite cheap and not well maintained. The bed was comfortable and the shower excellent. The towels were top notch but there was no shower gel.
- Steve (8/5): 1 night stay - Friendly staff. Old room. Waited a long time for ordered food. No phone signal.
- Steve (6/5): - Staff were nice , room was basic, food was average.
- Sue (10/5): Great stay, lovely food and a super comfy bed. - Great stay, lovely food and a comfy bed. Breakfast was amazing.
- Oxana (10/5): - Great place to stay.
- Graeme (10/5): - Fantastic food
- Julie (10/5): Very attentive - I’ve stayed at this property several times over the years. Received a very warm welcome. Jess checked me in and showed me to my room. I ate in the restaurant and my order was taken at the table which was appreciated. Gerry the landlord cooks breakfast to order which I like.
- Julie (8/5): - I requested a first floor room, which was provided.
- Verified traveler (10/5): A lovely stay in Hampshire - I was a bit worried because of it is a bit out of the way from Southampton airport but the hosts were lovely! Easy check-in: clean room with attention to detail on the furnishings and bathroom. The owners came over / introduced themselves. We had some pints. Was able to see Stonehenge in the morning (one of them even offered to drive me herself).
- alan (10/5): The Hatchet Inn - Our stay at The Hatchet Inn was first class. Have stayed with them previously made very welcome. Cleanliness was excellent and great variety of food which was also excellent. Enjoyed the quiz night
- George (6/5): Pretty pub B&B with appalling breakfast service - Comfortable and well appointed room. Unfortunately breakfast service was dreadful. We arrived for breakfast at 8.05am (told and stated 0800-0930 at weekends). No sign of life and rang two doorbells and used door knocker several times. Dogs started barking, someone appeared at the door at 0820. No apology, no welcome, nothing except 'tea or coffee, toast brown or white?' Zero conversation and inter personal skills. We discovered the poor cereal selection in old plastic containers. The breakfast room hadn't been cleaned since previous night activity. Balloons, paper petals, used napkin on floor. The chef arrived and asked what we wanted for breakfast. No welcome, apology or breakfast options offered. Not a 'hello/good morning ' etc from anyone. We did have a nice chat with the people at the next table! Dog (and I love dogs but some guests may not like them in the eating area) sat at our table for the whole of breakfast, presumably awaiting tit bits. If we hadn't paid for this using a Hotels.com free night we would have asked for a partial refund and pursued the reasons for the dreadful breakfast experience. The cooked breakfast was reasonable although the toast was cold by the time it arrived. Perhaps we were just unlucky but we will not visit again.
- Peter (10/5): Very Good - Friendly staff
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Standard rooms but they are dog friendly so I didn’t it to be 5 star.
Staff were very helpful and the food was lovely
- Kelechi (8/5): - Spacious room and the staf were very nice
- Carol (6/5): - The accommodation was located in a detached property at the rear of the pub, which housed four separate rooms. This was away from the road so it was quiet, apart from the noise of the extractors in the kitchens which were also at the back of the pub, and were running throughout the day from breakfast until late in the evening.
The bathroom was rather damp (the fan did not seem to be working) and it could do with modernising.
The room was reasonably clean and comfortable; a kettle and mugs were provided, however the tea bags that were provided had no flavour (perhaps they had been there since 2020?!) which was a shame when you are looking forward to a cup of tea after a long drive.
Overall it was ok but with a little effort could have been so much better, given the beautiful character and location of the building.
- Algar (10/5): - Great
- Verified traveler (4/5): Not recommend staying but would eat - Pub is quaint
Staff friendly
Food is good
Nice location
Staff don’t wear PPE
Items swapped from one table to another not wiped down
Bedroom was not very clean
Shower mouldy
Windows frames etc dusty cobwebby
Kettle filled with water on arrival
Carpet could do with a clean and vac
Vent in bathroom horrible
Dust cobwebs on light fittings
Bed hard as rock
Would say good is good
Our accommodation was not
- Martin (10/5): Highly recommend. Beautiful. - Absolute picture postcard pub in a small village. Everyone were super helpful, food and drink really good. Sitting at breakfast so not tried yet but everyone else’s looks great.
Room a little tired but more than adequate.
Highly recommend
- Owen (10/5): - Very nice village inn.
- Florence (6/5): Tucked away thatched pub/accommodations - Comfortable bed, spotless sheets and towels sift. bathroom ok but shaving light didn’t work. Room/bathroom could have done with an airing; food good - large portions! Bit tucked away don’t think you could have walked anywhere from there. Overall comfortable and clearly popular.
- Andy (6/5): - Service v good, breakfast good, evening meal not up to standard for the price . Good Choice of drinks.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Great breakfast but… - Lovely staff and a really good breakfast but the room was disappointing: a thick layer of dust on many flat surfaces, some bathroom fittings were screwed/glued but still not secure. The shower soap dish was full of water and still had the previous occupants half used shower gel bottle in it. In current (Covid) times when we’re all trying to keep everything extra clean it was very disappointing.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Friendly and welcoming. The food was great and the room was perfectly comfortable for the price. Would recommend.
- Ian (8/5): Attractive country inn - Very attractive building
Good solid B&B experience
Excellent breakfast
