Guest Reviews
- Jason (10/5): - Great little pub with friendly staff and safe parking for a motorcycle
I missed out on food due to the time but they are more than happy to eat a takeaway in the bar area
Definitely use this place again
- David (6/5): Refresh needed - Bathrooms needs a bit of TLC and beds are terrible.
- Richard (10/5): The White Horse is very nice. - Very helpful and attentive staff. Super clean room and comfortable bed. Best nights sleep for ages. Only negative was poor WiFi signal in some parts of the building and bedroom.
- Phil (10/5): - Lovely room, shame there was no WiFi in there.
- Tandi (10/5): Definitely worth a stay - Area and hotel is so nice and relaxing. We sat in the beautiful garden enjoying the sunshine when we arrived. Staff are so friendly, helpful and professional throughout our stay. Only down side is the room was clean but a bit shabby especially the carpet which could do with replacing. The food in the restaurant is EXCELLENT and I highly recommend it, the prices were around £15 for a main which is well worth it for the quality and amount of food. We will definitely stay here again - thank you so much to all the staff you are amazing!
- Justine (8/5): Great find! Would stay again - Staff were absolutely fantastic - friendly & helpful. Room was lovely. Outside of the control of the hotel, but a nearby business had a lorry working early in the morning (4am ish) that had an alarm on it that woke us up.
- John (6/5): Basic but adequate - Accommodation at the White Horse is fairly basic but comfortable enough for a night or two, with a decent shower and tea/coffee.
Unfortunately the night I stayed - Wednesday - is chef's night off, also note that no breakfast is available so be prepared to make other arrangements.
- Martina (6/5): - Room wasn't ready on arrival at 1600 dispite check in being from 1500.
Requested a double bed but was allocated the only twin room. Helped to push the beds together, but no offer of a double duvet.
The room was also cold on arrival. I was advised the heating would soon come on but it never did.
- Paul (10/5): Recommended - Beautiful old building. Food and drink was top notch. Room was spacious and the bathroom though quite small, was well appointed. No issues with external noise despite being so close to the A303 dual carriageway. The surrounding area is beautiful.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Very comfortable and warm place to stay, with good food
- RLR (4/5): - Characterful property near to Thruxton race track.
Avoid room 3. Very, very noisy room. Can hear every word spoken in bar below. Like having a loud television on constantly until 11:00 at night.
Impossible to relax or sleep in the room because of the incessant noise.
Ruined our stay and we went home early.
- Donna (10/5): - Lovely people very clean room
- Martine (8/5): Charming country character - Beautiful character building in a lovely rural location which is very convenient for Thruxton race circuit. Fantastic bar food, shame that they don't serve breakfast. Would definitely stay again if we were in the area.
- Michelle (2/5): Dreadful - A loud extractor fan probably kitchen based was on all night so sleep was impossible.
Delivery drivers park under bedroom window from 6am and leave engines running.
Room is tatty at best
- Brian (6/5): cosy pub - Only stayed one night. Very small bedroom but comfortable and clean. Didn’t really have much dealings with the staff but what we did have they were helpful and polite
- SHAUN (10/5): spot on - exserlent
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Unique pub with rooms. It was what it appears to be in the photos. Lots of free parking. By a motorway but our room was very quiet. Spacious clean room.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - HAD A GREAT STAYOVER TICKED ALL THE BOXES WILL RETURN SHORTLY
- Verified traveler (4/5): - great food, great beer, excellent and helpful staff
, but , room is offered as bed only breakfast is not an option guest have to make their own arrangements offsite. Pity the landlord considered the main bar as his own private area for entertaining his friends. The guests hade to make do with a smaller counter. I spent many frustrating minutes queuing for service from the 1 bar person on duty, whilst the landlord continually came behind the bar to serve his friends ignoring the queuing guests.
The White Horse has changed ownership since my 1st stay, which i rated 5/5. My latest rating would be 2/5
Food 5/5 Beer 5/5 Ambience 1/5 service 4/5
- Eric Marcus (8/5): Great Pub/Hotel - Friendly staff, good food and comfortable room and on the doorstep for the race track which was ideal for me.
- Verified traveler (2/5): Dirty and poor condition - Could not stay there. Cleaning beds and linen and staff where lovely. But carpet stank, the bathroom looked 100 years old and I don't mean retro.... I mean disgustibg. air freshener everywhere and when I opened the windows it was above air conditioner exit vent. Forfeited the paid money and never used it. Disaster.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - It would have been nice to have cups or mugs for our coffee.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - This was a great location for where we needed but no breakfast and there was a noisy generator all night. Other than that it was ok.
- Ian (8/5): No food on Mondays - There is no food available on Monday evening which would be good to know BEFORE you book.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Very friendly helpful staff - The pub and staff were great. Pity they had stopped offering breakfast, as it was on the website when we were looking. Also, it must have been terrible when the flyover for the A 303 was built so close to the pub. Traffic passed all night only a few metres from our window.
- Verified traveler (4/5): The White Horse - Staff friendly on arrival & room was comfortable. However on our return we had reason to complain about our cooked breakfast not being available although at the time of booking this was included. I was asked to speak to the manager by telephone(?) & I found him to be rude & confrontational. I was offered a £10 refund which I accepted & we went to bed. Throughout the night a refrigerator unit was very audible below our room & doors were slammed in the early hours, which I accept the pub cannot control but perhaps polite notices asking guests to respect others staying. Will not be returning to The White Horse which is a shame as it is in a great location & pub is very charming inside.
- Janet (8/5): Lovely country Pub - We stayed at the White Horse in order to visit the Hawk Conservency for Owl Night Flight experience. The pub had a peaceful friendly atmosphere. Reception at the bar was friendly and quick. Our room was clean and comfortable. Breakfast freshly cooked with very tasty sausage and bacon. A very enjoyable stay. We would stay again
- Ron (8/5): Short stay - Just a one night stay, a nice pub meal, staff friendly and helpful. Only negative no real coffee at breakfast.
- Neil (10/5): Lovely old English pub. - Very comfortable room. All very friendly and helpful.
- Verified traveler (6/5): I wish I had known the restaurant was shut - Nice spacious pub within touching distance of the A303, literary! The reason the pub's photo is not front on is that the A303 is right outside. I had a rear room and did not notice the traffic noise over the noise of the cellar refrigeration units. The room was OK for the price I paid. My biggest disappointment was that the restaurant was closed. Do check when booking, but I think this is a Monday night thing. Closest restaurant is 1.2 miles away at the The Hawk Inn, which also has rooms (but more pricey). Cooked breakfast was good.
NB: The owner told me they only took over in June and had spent a lot on the kitchen. So things should improve
- Nigel (10/5): - We had a very good stay. Ideal position for our purpose (visit to a nearby racehorse trainer). New owners very welcoming and helpful. Enjoyed food. Our room overlooked the garden and part car park; very quiet although slight fan noise. Enjoyed our short visit and would go again.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Basic but clean, friendly service, good breakfast - Our room was basic, as expected from a road-side inn, but clean. Friendly service and good cooked breakfast. The hotel is just next to a big road but we could barely hear any noise
- Tony (8/5): March stay - Acceptable rooms, friendly staff, food was wonderful
- B B (10/5): - Good pub for a 3 star, food not cheap but very good portions.
Very warm pub with 2 fires, and friendly.
- Peter (8/5): Andover stopover - Nice enough property and a convenient location. Did not know that the restaurant would be shut on Sunday and also bar is sometimes closed on a Sunday evening. The room was nice and comfortable and clean only downside was the shower could have been cleaner.
- Neil (8/5): A review - Handy stopover near the road so you wouldn't expect idyllic location. The owner and his staff were friendly and helpful. I chose the hotel based on location and reviews of the food and was certainly not disappointed for it was excellent. We were lucky to have arrived on "steak night" and these arrived cooked exactly as requested. The building was noisy through the night but I'd expect that in an old thatched inn and the bed was so comfortable that it didn't stop sleep.
- Joseph (10/5): Ideal for visiting Thruxton Motor Racing Circuit - Lovely old building, good food.
- Neil (10/5): GREAT HOTEL JUST OFF THE A303 - My wife and I stayed here for one night en-route from Cornwall to Kent. The Hotel/Pub is situated just off the A303 (literally one minute off A303) with lots of parking available. On arrival, our room wasn't ready as a plumber was just finishing a repair but we were offered a free drink while we waited which was very nice. Our room was very comfortable with all the facilities one would expect and the wi-fi was good.. We didn't actually use the restaurant but the bar offered a wide variety of beers/ales and we spent an enjoyable evening chatting to some of the locals. The "olde world" charm of the hotel coupled with the friendliness of the proprietor and staff made for a really excellent overnight stay. Breakfast the following morning was really good and to be honest we were sorry to leave!
- Andy (10/5): - Great Old Pub of character with thatched roof. The owner is very friendly and does a good breakfast. Huge bed and good facilities.
- Robin (8/5): - Staff very pleasant. Hotel is very tired but was still able to enjoy our stay
- John (10/5): - Excellent overnight stopover, well positioned near A303. In fact The White Horse is right beside the road but the old thatched inn has such thick walls and such thick thatch that we didn't hear any noise. Very friendly, smiling staff who make you feel welcome and valued among all the local customers who obviously enjoy the atmosphere as they turned out for a good dinner in spite of a day of heavy rain. Good breakfast, too, in an old-fashioned way of table service.
- Rob (6/5): Good location for over night stay - Very warm greeting on arrival by staff. Breakfast was more than emough and owner very pleasent and friendly. The only fault was the shower room needed to be completely gutted and refitted. Mould all around shower and large crack in sink. This drops my mark from 10 /10 to a 7 / 10.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Beautiful pub, restaurant & garden. Very good dinner, generous breakfast & friendly owner & staff. Our room was small & cramped, It was a very hot day so not very comfortable. However, we enjoyed our stay very much.
- Alan (10/5): - Lovely thatched roofed building, quiet, nice beer garden, friendly and polite staff and great food
- A.J. Davis (10/5): Beautiful old pub - Rooms were small with no air conditioning, but the atmosphere of the place and the staff more than made for it. Had a wonderful time talking with staff and locals. I would most definitely stay there again.
- jonathan (10/5): Fantastic 16 Centry thatched cottage hotel !! - Really nice place with a great atmosphere, good food, bags of parking, easy access to rooms, very large garden, great selection of beers, nice locals, great staff. Lots to do in the area. Only bad point is that some idiot council builder allowed the road to pass quite close to the back, but, once inside you cannot hear it and it does not disturb your sleep.
- Chris (10/5): Delightful old school pub and room experience - This is a wonderful old building but fully restored with most modern amenities--excellent wifi, nice bathrooms and showers, cable television. It is NOT a modern hotel and if that is what you are looking for then this isn't it. That said, this is a very comfortable, beautiful, well managed and maintained experience. There is a wonderful pub with restaurant downstairs with a small but truly friendly and competent staff. A family operation and it is immediately obvious everyone working there loves their job and will do all they can to make your experience a great one. The building is an old thatched roof inn dating back in some parts to the 16th century, but I would depict it as a fairly 18th-19th century structure. The grounds are beautiful and there is plenty of parking. It is right up against a raised "A" highway but traffic noise is not a problem. The food is great. The rooms are well maintained and pretty much modern but have a rustic feel to them. Low ceilings because this building is centuries old. The price was unbelievable--I could not believe we were getting this fantastic experience for such a moderate amount.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - 5 g
- Verified traveler (8/5): Cosy old world Inn. - Comfortable room and a good breakfast. We didn't eat in the restaurant but the menu looked good.
- Phil (6/5): Average at Best - Room was very small and dated, lots of cobwebs and not the cleanest I have stayed at, thought was a little over priced and would not want to return, made to feel like I was an inconvenience when came down for my limited choice breakfast
- Graeme (10/5): Hidden Gem - Made to feel very welcome from moment we stepped through the door, from locals and staff. Staff could not do enough for us, attentive & friendly without being over bearing. Excellent cask ales, food & service could not have wished for better. Perfect place to stay for visiting Stonehenge. Do not be put off by the close proximity of the A303, you do not notice it. Would certainly stay again.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Lovely, thatched pub but noisy. - We chose this place to stay because it was a convenient and reasonably priced overnight stop whilst we were visiting family. The room was clean and comfortable except that the ensuite had a few flaws, the toilet was situated under a sloping ceiling which meant that any men over average height would have had difficulties, the shower access was narrow even though inside the showere was reasonably generous sized and the light switch was behind the door outside in the room. We were disturbed most of the night by the noise of the refrigeration units downstairs which at times sounded like a washing machine on the spin cycle. The Pub is under the A303 so we expected some road noise but this wasn't enough to cause a problem. The staff were all very friendly and helpful and the breakfast was very nice.
- Robert (8/5): Good night's sleep and breakfast - Hard to find, because hotels.com had it in the wrong place, but Google Maps sorted it! Friendly staff; decent beers. We'd already arranged to eat somewhere else, but our taxi driver said the White Horse's food is very good.
- Lewis (10/5): A Traditional historic thatched building - This is a traditional Pub with a good restaurant
- STEPHEN W (8/5): traditional country pub - A cosy thatched pub set in beautiful countryside
- Glen (8/5): - A very pleasant no frills hotel/pub/restaurant, staff very friendly & helpful. Good food and a nice relaxed atmosphere. Ideal place to stop if visiting nearby attractions. Stonehenge & thruxton circuit close by.
- Margaret (8/5): - very pleasant and helpful staff.
- Michael (8/5): Very convenient for the A303. - Excellent restaurant, friendly staff, characterful hotel.
- Alan (10/5): Great place to stay - Fantastic hotel, restaurant, pub, I stopped there as it was close for my work I travel the country visiting my sites as an engineer, the welcome was great and staff very friendly I will be regularly returning here 10 out of 10
- Derek (10/5): Real old world charm
- What a find! Beautiful thatched roof, old world pub charm with excellent food and first rate staff. This was the start of a three week vacation for two couples from North America, and could not have been better. We had dinner here two times and the food and service were great both times. Full breakfast was enough to last all day, and the atmosphere was really welcoming. Finally the location - right next the the main highway, and ocassionally some traffic noise overnight, but not enough to disturb sleep. Eight thumbs up!!
- Traveller (10/5): Pub B&B with character and good food - No complaints, Rooms are perfectly adequate. Pub is good and the food offered is excellent and good value for money. Good breakfast cooked to order at a time you can select. Main road is very close so noise could be a problem but our rooms were on the back of the pub so no problem at all.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The hotel was lovely, very picturesque, but it was a pity is was so close to the A303, therefore it was a bit noisy from the traffic. It had a lovely garden, and served superb meals. The bedrooms were rather tired looking, but it was a 500 year old building, so was furnished within keeping. We were made to feel very welcome.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Lovely Country Pub - Booked up after reading reviews. Going to Thruxton the following day so location couldn't be better. Very friendly welcome from the owner. Room had everything you need and bed very comfortable. Evening meal was very good and waiting staff couldn't be more helpful and friendly - nothing too much trouble. Home-made marmalade at breakfast was delicious!
- Christopher (6/5): Close to Thruxton - Neighbouring road noisy but quietens down in the evenings.
Staff great,John the owner very friendly and helpful well respected by staff.#
Due to external fans and overhead road can be a little noisy.
Pub itself appears to close 11.30 ish
- Paul (8/5): Great old pub. Great food, good beer. - Only stayed one night but a very pleasant stay. Was alarmed that the A303 was so close, but there were no issues, not even noise. Thruxton is very small but great for walks to check out the thatched roofed cottages and other fine homes.
It's an old pub with LOW ceilings. Be warned!
- jacklee (8/5): Lovely pub with great food - The pub is lovely and the food was great. Our room was small but had everything you would need eg tea coffee facilities toiletries hair dryer etc. Loved it apart from the bed squeaked all night( couldn't even move your hand with out it squeaking) and have to say was the most uncomfortable bed ever.! We were in a room right next to a303 but the noise from the traffic was not a problem. All in all was fab apart from the bed.
- Deringer (8/5): Very close to Hawk Conservancy - Nice, character b&b, all low ceilings and thatched roof. Ideal for short stay as a bit close to the motorway, it runs above/beside the b&b at one end and our room was above the bar too, so a little noisy. Room also had nowhere to put anything other than a decent sized wardrobe. Bed was very comfy and there were some quality biscuits with the tea tray.
We ate there too and the food was great, very tasty. Breakfast was also lovely, although we weren't offered any cereal, orange juice or toast(other than buttered slice that came with the breakfast). Very reasonable cost wise and would use again if we were visiting Hawk conservancy.
- wombat (8/5): Thatched old charm - Lovely thatched cottage inn with great restaurant. The food is very good. The Inn has a lovely garden and the rooms are very nice & quiet. The Inn is located right by the dual carridgeway road which is very noisy however this cannot be heard inside.
- Gary (10/5): Outstanding/ Excellent - Fantastic. A fabulous B&B with very kind and attentive host(s). Highly recommended!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - We enjoyed the pub drinks, delicious dinner and the quaint Thruxton village walk.
- Greg (8/5): Great down to Earth hotel - We wanted to stay at a local hotel or B&B for a more personal experience. This hotel is not the Expedia's definition of a 4 star, but we enjoyed it more than a 4 star hotel. Large hotels can be very impersonal. The White Horse hotel contains the local restaurant and bar. The owner and locals are very friendly. Wish we had time to stay longer and explore the area more.
- Marion (10/5): Great beautiful/Peaceful location - Quiet rural setting but mins from A road. 15th Century building with many original features. Well kept beer garden/outside eating area, excellent fresh cooked breakfast using local sourced ingredients. Excellent lunch/dinner menu. Friendly helpful staff.
- Pete (10/5): little gem under the A303 - Only stayed 1 night, but were felt to be very welcomed. Very quick check in, shown straight to our room and were told all about the facilities of the hotel and the Wi-Fi password etc. Spent most of the evening sat out in the garden,
evening meal was excellent, breakfast was also very good ( so was the beer ).
We had a room at the back which was very quiet, can't comment on the rooms at the front near the A303 (for obvious reasons )
- Verified traveler (10/5): Lovely old thatched Inn. - Restaurant food is good. Lovely view of a field with two horses in from our room.
- raegan (8/5): Nice to find a good one - Good room, friendly staff and lovely food. I will book there again in the future.
