• Verified traveler (6/5): - Extremely basic. We wanted something close to the airport for one night. Got that. Basic breakfast. Good staff. Not much in the area.
• John (10/5): Excellent service - The woman at the front desk was incredibly nice, even after I missed the breakfast period she offered to make me anything I wanted free of charge and gave great advice for things to see around town. There were renovations going on so not all of the amenities were available, but the staff did everything they could to make up for it. The location was perfect for sight seeing. The room was small, but clean and comfortable.

But what really setcthis place apart were Mario who checked my son and I in and Juan who personally gave us our wake up call at 4am, made us breakfast and then stepped outside to wait for our cab that he called. It felt like we were guests in their home, especially when Juan was cooking for us.
• Linda (8/5): Didn't need to go to San Jose - Great place to stay after landing at at the San Jose airport. Caught the bus to Jaco the next morning. Elizabeth was a great help getting us started on our first Costa Rican trip.
• Verified traveler (4/5): - Remodeling is in progress and the room had new paint, but it was lacking some very basic, inexpensive things that guests expect: a luggage rack (or at least a chair) to get luggage off the floor; a rack with hangers (or at least a hook) to hang clothes; reading lights for the beds (or at least a lamp on the nightstand); a cup or glass to drink out of in the bathroom. TV was not working properly. The locks are old and the attendant must let guests in and out the front door. Not recommended for anyone with a car; there is no hotel parking, and the parking situation in downtown Alajuela is very bad. However, taxi to airport is inexpensive.

• Sapna (10/5): Nice Neighbourhood - Really amazing service! - This place is located in a quiet neighbourhood. I made the mistake of booking on the wrong day and showed up at 2 AM from my flight. They were extremely accommodating and changed my reservations. Not only that but they accommodated an additional friend with and gave them a room on the spot. I was extremely pleased with their customer service and hospitality. Breakfast was great and room was nice. Perfect cozy spot for friends or couples. I would definitely go again here just for their service!

• Matthew (4/5): Noisy, stuffy room - My room was a stuffy, windowless cave on the first floor. There was frequently lots of noise from the lobby outside.Their credit card reader was broken, luckily I had enough cash on hand. The first shower I took didn't have hot water, the second had some, but it ran out pretty quickly. Breakfast was good, cooked to order, probably the only redeeming thing. Location next to the park is nice. Wifi was good.

• Brian (2/5): Don't Get Double-Charged - The worker at the front desk was shockingly rude, and tried to make me pay for the room in cash, even though I had already paid via Expedia. He finally gave me a key, but it was too a small basic room, when I had paid for a larger balcony room. When I went back to the desk, he again tried to make me pay cash for the 'upgrade.' Not sure if this was a scam or just terrible record-keeping. It was eventually sorted out, but it was not a pleasant experience. The rooms was small and basic - not great, but not terrible.

• Danny (2/5): Forget about getting a rest - The road and hallway noise is unbearable. Luckily I brought earplugs otherwise forget about getting any decent sleep. You can clearly hear everyone from the reception and anyone walking in the hallways. Nevermind the road traffic. Room was semi clean but run down with a broken lamp. No windows. Staff tries to be helpful but I feel they know what they are up against and can’t do much about the situation. Last but not least, I was busy chasing cockroaches (pic attached) all night. I would value this as a $5-$10 hostel

• Verified traveler (4/5): Not recommend !!! - The location was great, less than 2 miles from the airport and in the heart of Alajuela Center on the corner of Cathedral and Central Park... BUT, we picked this hotel for its proximity to the airport and free parking, there is parking 7PM to 7AM in a lot a block and a half away... AND the room and the bed were dirty, a lot of noise from the street and very poor breakfast. How this hotel got a rate of 3.4 out of 5???. It should be 2 or less... Not recommend !!!
• Randall (6/5): Hotel Staff Great - Food Great - Hotel NOT Great. - The Good: Hotel staff are wonderful friendly helpful people. Hotel restaurant although small serves great food at comparable prices. The hotel is conveniently located close to everything. The Bad: Room priced too high. My room was very small with no window, the air conditioner smelled badly of mold/ mildew. Hot water was a major problem in that it was available from the sink but not the shower head. Wifi was NOT available in the rooms regardless whst the website says, only the restaurant area had a signal which was week and dropped frequently. The hotel has No Lobby area so there is no place to sit comfortably and relax. Your choices are small very hard wooden chairs in the restaurant area or your room. Due to it's location the hotel is EXTREMELY noisy 24 hrs a day. So for the $45 / day I paid it was way over priced. $25 is a better match for all the problems.
• Verified traveler (4/5): Loud - Just needed to stay one night, our flight left at 6:30 am. However, the hotel is on a busy street. Our room was right by the street and it was LOUD! You can hear people outside talking and the cars driving by all night. We could hear everyone in the lobby since it was right outside of our door. The only plus side was that it was 1.5 miles from the airport. But the noise made it hard to sleep.

Unpleasant neighbourhood, bath had hairs in it, loafs of noisy pigeons on tin roof at room 8. Only plus is proximity to airport and friendly syaff. Would NEVER stay again or recommend it to anyone. Still in trauma!

• Jesse (8/5): Conveniently located by the airport. - Landed late and just wanted a clean affordable room to crash until the next leg od my journey. Was nice to have a complimentary breakfast. Room did not have a wash cloth so I used the two hand towels as wash cloth and towel.
• Verified traveler (4/5): Disappointed in missing Free Parking promised - We picked this hotel for its proximity to the airport and free parking, using the Free Parking filter. We were extremely disappointed to arrive the day before our departure only to find out that there is no dedicated parking for this hotel. The so-called free parking is on the street and is very limited. There is parking after 7 PM in a lot a block and a half away. We drove around the town trying to find parking nearby only to learn that most spots charge by the half hour and surrounding parking lots are only available by the hour (avg 900 colones). The room seemed comfortable and clean when we arrived but lacked a window and wifi was poor; we discovered a few large bugs in the am which looked vaguely like cockroaches, so not as clean as hoped. The 24 hour coffee in lobby was non-existent at 5 am when we had to depart for our flight.
• Cathy & Andy (10/5): Great location! - We loved Hotel Catedral. The location was great, less than 3 miles from the airport and near the Interbus line to our next destination. The staff was friendly and more than helpful. They carried our heavy suitcase up three flights of stairs without us even asking. The breakfast they serve is hot and good. We stayed there for two nights, once coming and once going. Hopefully we will return to Costa Rica again one day and we will definitely stay at Hotel Catedral.
• Barb (8/5): Hotel stay - Had a great time . Hotel was very nice. Gave us an up grade to a room with a kind bed at no extra cost because of the amount of days we were staying. Air conditioner broke down 2 days before leaving and offered a different room but decided to stay in original room because it cooled down a night when we were back at the room. They were very helpful in setting up tours and suggestions . It was very nice to be in the city with all the locals rather than a resort.
• it is ok. (8/5): Nice small hotel - It is a nice small hotel. Close to everything in downtown. Staff was friendly. It could improve a few things, like a better wifi. But, it is good enough for the price.

• Ksenija (8/5): Not that bad - After reading the reviews my boyfriend and I were a bit hesitant about staying there. But the hotel wasn't all that bad. It's a descent place for its price. It's close to a lot of things like market, park, stores, places to eat and bars. The room was comfy, the shower was hot and the A/C was cool. However, the A/C was right on top of the bed and was leaking right on our heads, had to move the bed a little bit away from the wall. Wifi was okay and worked for the most part. The breakfast is truly horrible so don't waste your time, energy or stomache space to even try it. The front desk staff was very nice and helpful. But overall would come back here again if necessary.

• Verified traveler (6/5): Never going back - The web site advertise a breakfast even with pictures of a good tico style pinto and fruit, when we asked we got a cold hard margine saturated piece of toast, a cold raw pancake and spoon full of oily eggs and the only juice availavle was apple juce made from powdered concentrate...they had no other options not even a banana that cost 25 cents at most.... This is costa rica theres fruit everywhere...
• Verified traveler (2/5): - Cons: The walls and sheets and towels had brown stains on them, the tv was basically a small computer monitor, you could hear every sound from the busy streets outside, there was no where to sit except the bed, it took about five minutes for the water in the shower to warm up and the two things of furniture were probably 20 years old. Pros: the staff members were polite and it had an AC, even though it didn't work well.
• Verified traveler (6/5): Small hotel - Small narrow rooms. AC was ok. TV was a small computer screen size. Bed was a little uncomfortable for a spring matterss. Breakfast was a small fulfilling 2 toasts with one scrambled egg a a juice. I guess it's all you get for forty dollars. It's very close to Airport Santamaria, $5 dollar taxi drive. Nothing to see out of the window.
• Valerie (4/5): Not recommmended. - 2 star at best. Run down, very noisy, sad little place. Stained, threadbare linens. Damp, mildewy smelling towel. Was looking for a clean, basic room for one night after a late flight. The hotel is close to the airport but nothing else to recommend it.

• Fiona (10/5): Nice hotel close to the airport - Great value. Close to a flea market, food, banks, and shopping. Clean rooms with air conditioning. 24 hour reception and only a $6 cab ride to the airport which takes less than 5 minutes.

• Verified traveler (4/5): Giant cockroach, dirty sheets, noisy - The view out of our balcony was spectacular. That was the only good thing about this room. There was a fridge, but it wasn't even cold by morning. The pillowcases, sheets and blanket were stained, the white towels were grey, and rust clumps were dried on the wall under the air conditioner. The reservation by Expedia was booked incorrectly; only 2 of us were registered, but the king bed fit all three of us. The bed was extra firm but sleepable. We found a third pillow in the closet but staff said there were no more pillowcases. My husband found the cleaning room open and grabbed up a case. None of us wanted our faces against their uncovered pillow. In the morning we were greeted by La Cucarocha nearly 3 inches long. Thankfully this was only a brief overnight stay.

• Scott (8/5): Nice Hotel Close to the Airport - This is an older hotel with comfortable rooms. excellent service, and a nice little restaurant on site - breakfast is included in the room price. The staff are very pleasant and helpful. Though street noise can be a problem in the front rooms, this is a very good choice if you have a late or early flight at the airport, which is only a 5 minute taxi ride away. Its location in the center of Alajuela is great; food, shopping, and musuems are all within walking distance. We've stayed here twice, and would go back again.
• Verified traveler (2/5): This is the last time we stay here. - The ONLY thing good about this hotel was that the rooms had AC. Other hotels in the area only have AC in some of the rooms, and charge more for it. This hotel has AC is all rooms and the price is less, however that is the ONLY good thing about it. The bathroom had mold on the ceiling. The toilet had rust stains in the bowl. The shower did not have a cover on the drain, just a whole in the floor. The hot water was not hot. The toilet was so close to the wall I had to sit with my left foot in the shower and if I stood up, I hit my head on the towel rack. Oh, and the towels were terrible. They were small and felt like they had been used for several years. Flat and scratchy and worn and not absorbent at all. The bed was hard and the sheets had stains. They smelled clean, but they were still stained and there was no blanket other than the comforter which looked horrible. We only stayed here because it was close to our family who live in the area. Next time we will find another hotel. This one is just not worth it. It's a shame, because when we started going to Costa Rica, this hotel was newly renovated and I rated it 4 stars. It has deteriorated significantly over the years. Also, the WiFi does not reach the 3rd floor and there were no covers on the lights., just bare bulbs in the ceiling and on the desk lamp.
• Alistair (8/5): Convenient for the airport - Fine for my needs - quick overnight before early flight - good places to eat nearby - road is pretty noisy but it does quieten down come 10ish - hotel helpful with flight advice and getting us a taxi - $5 taxi to airport 5/10 minutes so very good for that

• Consumer (2/5): Hotel not as expected - Very noisy from traffic and lack of insulation (birds on roof and something maybe in walls) walls paper thin, door to balcony is an inside door that had light visible from latching side, black runs on wall below AC and black spots on bathroom ceiling (possibly mold), restaurant only open 3 hours for breakfast with 2 choices-pancakes or eggs. Only 1 mini bar of soap, TV to the side of bed-couldn't watch with out twisting to side. Bed hard as a rock. WIFI rarely worked. I was luck to get 3 hours sleep! Hotel pictures are from a while ago and it looks quiet but isn't even close to quiet.
• Jerome (8/5): Nice hotel across from cathedral. - The check in for both our stays was great. Front desk staffed 24/7 by helpful and courteous people. The breakfast was fresh and served in a clean open dining area. Room 5 had great flooring, was spacious. Had two beds. Very clean. Nice large window. A/C worked well. We walked the neighborhood during both our stays and found the locals to be helpful and friendly even when approached at nite. There aren't a lot of restaurants near the hotel, so you'll need to ask for directions (within walking distance). Taxi's are very cheap in the area ($3.5 to get to the airport if no traffic).
• barry1941 (8/5): Final stay in Costa Rica near airport - Although this hotel is not up to what one would expect from the picture, it was probably the best in town and the location is great for a nice evening walk or morning visit to the central market in the morning. Only place we could find in center of town to eat at night was a McDonalds.
• Stephen (8/5): A good hotel near the Juan Santamaria Airport - My actual rating for this hotel is: 3.5 / 5 for the following reasons. I chose to stay at this hotel after my other booking for the evening fell through (flying out of the Juan Santamaria Airport early Sunday morning so wanted somewhere near the airport to cat-nap and shower) & it was a good choice. There are many good eateries in the surrounding area & the 2 reception staff I met over my stay were helpful & spoke English well. The room was furnished with quality wooden furniture (a pleasant surprise given the Ikea type of furniture that usually prevails) & very comfortable & the bathroom clean & functional. There were only 2 small negatives I would mention & a caution. The first slight negative is visual - the walls in my room, although white, were a patch-work of white where, for whatever reasons, partial re-paints had been done and it detracted from the visual comfort of the room. The second slight negative is that the shower curtain didn't work very well because, as soon as it got wet it clumped together making it hard not to have water escaping from the confines of the shower, and the caution - if you have lots of luggage, I didn't see a lift. I travel light, so not an issue but something to be aware of - they may not have one. If the owners re-painted the walls, I'd give it a 4-star. Would I stay here again - at the under $50 I paid for the night & a $6 taxi fare to the airport, yes, I definitely would.

Small hotel in the cutest yellow building at the centre of town. Lots of places to eat around, free safe parking. Easy check-in and check-out. Breakfast was awesome, very homey. The area has a nice vibe to it, especially in the mornings. Excellent value for your money and close drive from the airport.
• Cameron (2/5): couldn't sleep - The hotel was pretty dirty.. stained lamp shades, dirty sheets and pillow cases.. and was very noisy from the street below. but this is all to be expected for a hotel for $40/night.. but my biggest problem was there were several animals living in the roof that crawled around all night.. I assume rats but also heard bird noises. I only stayed here to catch an early flight.. but was only able to sleep for 1 or 2 hours. The guy at the front desk was helpful in the morning.. called a taxi and waited outside with us until the taxi arrived.. left to early to try the breakfast.
• Ronald (8/5): Perfect for airport travelers:! - Great little place to stay if you are traveling to/from San Jose airport. Emerson was very helpful. he let me checkin early and checkout late which was awesome! The hotel is very close to the center of alajuela which doesn't have too much going on but has a nice park in front of the cathedral. The could use a functioning dryer since they hang all the washed linens on the railings to dry. My towel was still wet when they gave it to me, but no big deal. The taxi ride from the airport cost $8 but there is also a bus for 540 colones which is about 1$. You do hear quite a bit of street noise as well.
• Julie (6/5): Good overnight stopover - Clean room, comfortable bed,shower fine. WiFi not good on top floor use dining area. Didn't try food restaurant shut as public holiday and had flights to catch. Staff helpful and got an early coffee. Would recommend especially for solo female as area OK.

• Verified traveler (6/5): Just ok - Stayed here for a night after flying into Costa Rica and before leaving for La Fortuna the next morning, did the job for a place to stay. Hotel isn't in great condition, paint was peeling off the walls in our room and overall hotel was nothing special. Wifi didn't work on the 3rd floor and it's definitely very noisy with cars passing by. Overall was fine to stay in passing through town.
• Terry (6/5): Decent place convenient to airport. - Stayed just one night before traveling to a different city. Decent neighborhood with a few restaurants nearby. Didn't like the free breakfast which was cooked a few hours earlier and reheated. One pancake with Aunt Jemima syrup, one piece of white toast, a little bit of scrambled egg, coffee and apple juice. The hotel is convenient to the airport, in good repair and relatively clean. The biggest problem was street noise. Trucks, cars with loud stereos and motorcycles until about 10:00 on a week night. Not too bad for a place to spend the night. This is the second time I've stayed here.

• Liming (10/5): A pleasant stay - I passed through San Jose airport before heading to the beach town Jaco, so I decided to stay in nearby Alajuela to explore for a night. Hotel Catedral Casa Cornejo exceeded my expectation. Bed is clean, nice and comfortable. My room comes with nice balcony with view of the Cathedral. It made a very nice stay and well worth the price. Hotel staff was very friendly and helpful too. The continental breakfast made a nice touch.
• Verified traveler (8/5): surprisingly nice for the $ - We were very happy with the room, the staff was friendly and hospitable. Comfortable room with ac and great view of church. Only negative is the traffic noise, but since it was sat night would have been that way anywhere I think... church bells woke us at about 6:30 am...lucky for us as i forgot to set my alarm and we would have missed our plane... LOL... I would definitely stay here again when flying in or out of san jose... $6 taxi from airport and only $4 back to airport.. Don't forget to check out the beautiful church right across the street, amazing... and the park is right there too!! All the fast food places within walking distance too..
• Seth (8/5): Inner city hotel - This was a fun hotel to stay at. We arrived there mid afternoon after visiting Poas and had no idea where to park. The man at the front desk described everything well (also in good English) and borrowed us an umbrella. We had a little balcony on the third floor where we listened to an orchestra in the city park while having a couple Imperials. It was a good time! Our only negative is the city noise of the rooms close to the streets.

• Verified traveler (4/5): There was a laundry room attatched to my room..... - Booked the room expecting a standard hotel room with bathroom and as advertised also a balcony. But when I arrived there I was in a dark, tiny room with no windows, other than the sliding door that connected me to the laundry room... Most of the finishes were broken, and the lamp was missing its shade, but the wire shade holder remained. Definitely feel like I got ripped off. Perhaps the other rooms are okay, but I would stay somewhere else if I knew that that was what I was getting. Spent lots of time travelling there and C.A. and I have had many hostel accommodations that were much more pleasant and a third of the price. Free breakfast was adequate, but not impressive. Even though I had no window there was still a lot of street noise, although that didn't bother me very much. Staff was pretty good and spoke english which was nice.
• Virginie (4/5): One night in Alajuela before leaving Costa Rica - We stayed at the hotel only because we had to take our plane the next day. The location of the hotel is great, it was nice to be in town. The room was comfortable and clean. The only thing is the noise. It was so loud. We could hear the cars as if we were outside. We had a hard time sleeping because it kept waking us up. If the isolation of the rooms were better, I would definitely recommend this hotel, but because what you want to do is sleep, than it's not that great. The rest is great, it's only that one thing.
• Robert (8/5): In the heart of town. - Hotel Catedral Casa Cornejo is nicely located, right next to the main plaza and just a couple of blocks from the indoor market. The staff is friendly and helpful. For those who like being downtown, it is a bargain. There are no elevators and most of the rooms are on the second or third floors, a bit of a climb after a long day for older folks. The breakfast is adequate, but nothing to write home about. A small serving of scrambled eggs, a pancake, a slice of white bread, and juice and coffee. No salsas or ají or anything to enhance the eggs. Fortunately, there are a couple of excellent restaurants nearby for breakfast, if one decides to decline the hotel fare. All in all, our experience was positive and I think it is worth the cost.

• Kendra (10/5): Very cute little hotel - I stayed for one night mostly because it is a short and cheap trip to the airport but was very surprised by how much I liked this hotel. It was the cheapest of all of the hotels I have gone to in Costa Rica and also the nicest. The staff was very nice, even when I came down at 4 in the morning asking for help with a taxi. The hotel is owned by a couple and the bottom floor is a small Italian restaurant. The room was also the largest I had visited with an extremely comfortable bed. The city was very safe and nice. The park one block away is very pretty. My only complaint is that the bathroom was a little small. I honestly wish that I switched my last night hotel in San Jose with this one! It is closer to the airport and much safer.

• jay (6/5): great airport access, and local culture exposure - more of a bed a breakfast than a hotel. the bathrooms were clean with hot water, the stairs are very narrow, and all but one room are upstairs, not good for those with limited mobility. rooms are about 8x 10 with a bed, small TV, air-conditioned, and adjoined bathroom 6x6, shower, sink, toilet. This is a Safe place to stay, directly in the center of Town. Parking can be a problem. You must use public parking on the street from 6am to 6pm at a cost of 500, colones per hour, (less than 1 US dollar) At night there are a couple of spots directly across from the hotel that will be watched all night. I had no safety or security problems on my stay. The in house restaurant has an Italian theme, the owner considers himself a Chef. However, he did not prepare my meal and the Calzone was undercooked and doughy. My partner had Pasta and it was very good. Overall, I enjoyed it do to being in walking distance of anything I needed and wanted, and it is only 10 minutes from the Airport, which is only a 5.00 dollars taxi ride.

The hotel is right in the center next to the Cathedral and central park. Lots of activity and walking distance to anything. We took the bus to San Jose a couple times. Easy and convenient.
• Kyle (8/5): Friendly little hotel close to SJO airport - We needed a hotel close to the airport for an early morning flight. The hotel is not super fancy but staff is very friendly and helpful. The location is right in the center of Alajuela with bars, restaurants and shops in easy walking distance. The area is very safe. Good choice for those who arrive or fly out of SJO and need to spend a night. Taxi is ~$6 to/ from the airport.
• Loo (8/5): Awesome location to explore the city - The location of the hotel was key. In the middle of Alajuela you can really get a sense of the culture and people. We walked around the city for hours exploring. The employees spoke English and were extremely helpful. It was fairly inexpensive and a great place for a night or two especially at the beginning or end of your trip since it's only a 10 minute drive from the airport.
• Verified traveler (10/5): Excellent Bargain for 8-minute Cab Ride to SJO - A nice little hotel in an urban setting. Street noise was fairly loud. Staff was very helpful and friendly. I'd stay there again if I had to be near the airport. It's a bargain hotel, so if you want fancy, this is not your place. I didn't get to try the breakfast since I left so early. Clean room, good WiFi.

• Natalie (8/5): A good centrally located budget hotel - The hotel was perfectly adequate for the one night that we stayed in Alajuela. Its location is brilliant and the staff extremely helpful. The rooms are basic but fine. It is good value for the money.

• Flora (10/5): Nice hotel and close to the airport. - Seems to be a fairly new hotel with very nice accomodations, i.e. TV, small refridg. and comfortable beds. If WiFi is very important for you choose a room on the 2nd floor. I was on the 3rd level and it did not work very well. The staff was very nice. There is someone always available 24/7. Most of the staff speak some English. Hotel not good for anyone with physical disablities, no elevator, and I do not believe there were any rooms on the first floor. I will definately go there again. A decent complimetary breakfast. In the evening it is an Italian Restaurant, which I did not try. Someone posted that it has a coffee shop; it does not. But you are in Costa Rica, plenty of Coffee everywhere. Overall I give them a 5 and the price is right. I was very impressed and when I visit again I will be staying there.

The complementary breakfast was very good, the hotel was clean, and it was very affordable. There was a lot of street noise, but it does quite down (11pm- 6am). I would definitely stay here again.
• Verified traveler (6/5): An Alright Hotel - We chose this hotel because it was fairly close to the airport. It was in a nice are. We were able to walk around town with no worries. The hotel was decently priced, had air conditioning (which is not common in this area of Costa Rica), and overall the room was alright. Pot wasn't special or spectacular, but it was clean. I'd stay there again.
