Guest Reviews
- Matthew (4/5): Don’t go there and try not to use this app! - Not good. Rented room through this scammer app and the hotel still found a way to charge / scam me out 50 more dollars for 9 hours of sleep!
- Lisa-Maria (8/5): - A classical Motel like in a Movie. The staff was really kind and helpful.
- Elba (6/5): - Good area
- Sheila Hopkins (2/5): - Unsafe. Sketchy area. Possible nearby shooting. Ptoperty blocked for a time by the cops. Requesting refund since it was unsafe to stay there.
- Annie (6/5): - There were burnt marks on the floor. Holes in the bathroom from someone punching the walls and only 1 plug outlet worked
- Paul C (10/5): - Great staff and quiet moel
- Paul C (10/5): - Quiet very low occupancy
- Ariana (10/5): - It's nice
- Jaylin (2/5): Never again! - If I could give them zero stars I would the son has no management skills whatsoever. The mother is so disrespectful yelling at us.. talking so disrespectfully rude and nasty they come over into this country want out money but treat us with zero respect I wouldn’t recommend this hotel if it was free she kept instructing us to stay in our rooms and not come out I was shocked $75 everyday for a week and I have to stay in my room are you kidding me I mean it was the worst experience I ever had with a hotel in my life they need to be put out of business
- Monique (6/5): - Wonderful room. Newley renovated. Looked very different from the outside. The window was unlocked which i didnt notice until the morning. No phone or lamps in the room. Fridge wasnt on. But enjoyed my stay overall. For some people they might feel ubsafe in the beighborhood. I was comfortable. But look at the surrpundings if your not comfortable walking by yourself
- Caitlin (10/5): - Loved it
- Georgia (8/5): Happy - It was nice and clean just the refrigerator didn’t work, but everything was good
- Christie (4/5): - Not in a great area, no one in office for check in, smoke detector and bathroom fan were ripped out of the ceiling, burn holes in bedding, a dead roach in corner, loose toilet seat, random things spilled and dried on floor, smelled awful
- Latoya (10/5): - Everything
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Everything was good
- Jazz (10/5): - Very nice and very quiet .
- Daniel (10/5): Loved it - Lived the place. Good check in and out. Room top notch. Stagf really nice.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Um… - I was not expecting the hotel to look like it did. I can tell they put some effort into the rooms but my shower was rusted and not great. I’m in town for a conference and there was no iron or ironing board. I did not feel safe in the location at all.
- Janet (8/5): - This room had the best of what I need for lodging, good bed, a/c working correctly, frig & microwave, hot water, very convenient parking. Didn't like that I did not get a receipt & bath had a bad drip that could be fixed in 10 minutes.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - It is a quiet place. It has a vending machine inside the facility.
- Jess (6/5): - Small and independently run. Interior needs some attention. Room was super humid (obviously not the owners fault but just something to consider).
- Latoya (8/5): Nice price - Room was okay clean I slept well.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - This place is very run down! Broken jagged tile I’m bathroom, nothing updated, do it yourself fixed. Loud dripping in refrigerator all night long. They tried to charge me again at check in. The woman couldn’t hear me through her glass enclosure and wanted me to pay her cash. Worst motel experience I’ve had.
- Jules (2/5): - Tv broke, blankets too thin, poor hygein supplies,no wifi, place too old to be paying an awful lot of money especually for one night
- S. Leigh (2/5): DO NOT STAY HERE! - do not stay here!!! Air conditioner barely works. Shower is awful. Disgusting actually. Very sketchy neighborhood, so I slept with lights and t.v. on just so it looked like I was awake, which I actually was because I was afraid. Upon checkout, I needed just one little extra hour because I was waiting on my car to get out of the shop which is the whole reason I was in Houston and was told "check out is at 11, no excuses." Are you kidding me? And housekeeping hadn't even arrived for their shift. AWFUL CUSTOMER SERVICE on top of all the above. DO NOT STAY HERE, ESP. IF YOU HAVE KIDS!!! OR ARE A FEMALE TRAVELING ALONE.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - A cheap motel that is in disrepair that makes you feel grubby and relieved to leave. The owner/ manager had no record of my reservation and it was very hard to talk to him through a glass security window and noisy ice and drink machines.
The room had no lights other than bright ceiling ones. The toilet kept flushing by itself and the bath plug hole was rather blocked.
Free coffee was available in reception but you had to ask the manger for creamer, sugar etc.
The sheets and pillow cases were clean, but the bedspread smelt of man!
I was just glad this was my final night's stay before flying home from Houston after an awesome US road trip cos it made we want to go home!
- patrick (4/5): Be Weary of Possible double charging. - They charged my credit card twice. Had I not checked my account, I would have been charged for an extra day that I didn't spend.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - Never again
- Verified traveler (4/5): Well ill never stay here again - Im never going to recommend this place to someone . Horrible neighborhood ! Like horrible. Im pretty sure we slept next to homeless people a couple doors down .
- JoAnna (6/5): - The room smelled of smoke! After we turned on the air conditioning it was alright.
- Larry (6/5): Houston - small hotel. Bed was awful. the room needed lots of TLC.
- smith (4/5): Very bad smelly room - Wasn't expect that level giving the price I paid. Very noisy and room smells.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great value - No carpet. Lots of tables. Good size. Safe and convenient parking.
- Tom (4/5): Terrible - Even though it’s cheap, the actual hotel is worth less than what you pay. Bed were super uncomfortable.
- Rather not say. (2/5): Did not feel safe; large mirror on wall next to be - Would not stay again. Room was really worn out. Parking area and room did not feel safe. Door did not have a second manual lock.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Nice room, clean, and comfortable. Checked in to my room with no issues. My room was ready when I arrived
- thomas (2/5): Hell - Smelled like smokers room door jams brown with dirt on white paint. Pillows were Brown smelled of smoke. Located in a bad part of town didn't feel safe.
- Leticia (6/5): Not for the fussy, but good enough for me. - If your needs are just a bed, a bath and aTV (with HBO), at an economical price. This is fine. We've been there twice.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Close to the dart line. - The motel is fine. It suits my needs. I thought it would be closer to downtown. However, the dart line is at the end of the street. Thus, if you hop on the dart, you can be downtown in no time. I would stay there again.
- ed (8/5): you know what this is - if you're considering staying here, you know what you're doing, in this category, is great!
- Mai (4/5): The room needs more lighting. No hair drier - The room needs more lighting. No hair drier. However, the staff was very accommodating with luggage.
- Kris (2/5): Disgusting - The pictures do not due justice to how disgusting this motel is. We were booked to stay for 5 nights and I cannot believe we even stayed for one before we switched hotels. I honestly felt unsafe and filthy the entire time.
- Mark (2/5): - Bad service in lobby!!! Room smelled nasty !! I wanted a refund but it was not refundable !!
- Shireen (2/5): Nightmare - It was a very bad experience, The motel was in a bad neighborhood very scary for a single woman to stay with the environment around and inside to top it all I had a very bad experience with the management they opened my hotels room while I was resting there without even knocking or letting me know it felt like invasion of privacy it was a very bad moment of my entire life I will never recommend this hotel to anybody.
- Cedric (6/5): Very cool - 1st room was a wreck, but the manager made it right
- Verified traveler (2/5): Gross - Drug smoke filled den.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Not good but cheap! - You get what you pay for. There's nothing good to say about this place other than it was cheap.
- Janine (10/5): - It was ok, older hotel for sure! But it was fine!
- Bernie (4/5): Old motel, needs upgrading
- Much to expensive for what it offers. Stayed in
newer more modern motels for have the price l paid there.
- Denise (8/5): Nice and quiet - Good location for doctor's visit. Nice and quiet. After long hot day the complimentary slush was a nice touch.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - The service was accommodating because I arrived early but the place is in serious disrepair. Anything over a 1 star would be an overstatement. It is in dire need of some renovations.
- Tammy (4/5): - It wasn't as bad as it looked but that's not saying much...
- Lou (8/5): inexpensive, decent facilities, close to U.Houston - very comfortable bed, granite shower and sink, nice amenities for the price.
- Tristan (4/5): A Place to Stay - We needed a quick, budget-friendly place to stay as we had to arrive in town a day sooner than expected. The area was a bit sketchy. The property was tucked away and could have better exterior lighting, especially giving the area. The shower curtains were dirty and the bathroom crevices and room baseboards needing tending. The towels were low quality and could certainly be replaced as they were thin and of poor quality. Otherwise, the customer service clerk was amazing and they had free coffee and slushes in the small lobby/check in area. We were ultimately able to fall asleep by watching a long movie on free cable tv.
- brian (2/5): Pictures misleading - There was very little hot water. Tiles broken on my bathroom floor in the room. And a refrigerator that made noise all through the night. I tripped on the broken tile in the night. I could not sleep for the noise outside. And the staff were not very friendly or helpful.
- Verified traveler (2/5): Did not stay due to standards of hotel - Shady, suspicious activity in the parking lot as I started to get situated in the room. Decided I didn't not want to stay, manager directed me to contact orbit, I did as orbit tried to call the manager disappeared. Only received 1/2 refund although I did not stay the night at that hotel.
- Hector (2/5): poor - rooms very filty, no phone working, doors not working properly,
- sandy (6/5): nice affordable hotel in houston - the hotel was clean, affordable, great parking in front of the rooms so you could see your car easily. quiet and no problems.
- Regina (4/5): Low Budget - I wasn't feeling the area or the room. Very low budget. I wasn't comfortable and didn't feel safe.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Hole in the wall motel - Staff was nice enough. Motel located in not so good part of town. Single building. We had to wait in the car for the bed to made. Room was tiny with weird wood floors. the tv was encased in weird makeshift console. Fridge was full of water, walls and Ceilings were stained. Room was decent enough for one night and close to downtown Houston. If u want a more hotel experience go somewhere else. 120$/night is waaayyyy too much!!
- Jimmie (4/5): - Very low end facility with extremely poor customer service.
- Verified traveler (2/5): Disgusting - Terrible staff. Disgusting room. To top it all of they were infested by bed bugs.
- Verified traveler (2/5): Go somewhere else - No I won't ever be back
- Verified traveler (2/5): not safe - canceled hotel didn't feel safe bars on windows area not that great was scared to stay there
- Joe (4/5): - The headboard of my bed had three screws sticking through that I nearly leaned back on. The wifi wasn't great. It kept dropping and when I did have it connected it was slow moving. Overall, meh, it was good enough to spend the two short nights that I had to be in Houston and it was cheap.
- Axel (6/5): Convenient and Cheap - For the price it was good. Location was a little bit.....actually very frightening. I feel like a lot of not so legal things may or may not happen there. But room was great, tv and DirectTV was a plus. Only thing to complain about is the location, other than that, good overall motel for price!
- AMAR (8/5): Motel is Nice but is away from city. . - Motel is Nice but is away from city. One should have his own car to go here & there OR call a taxi. Public transport is about 300 yards from motel but is limited. Front Desk Staffs are SUPER Helpful.
- Jennifer (10/5): - Friendly desk service and a clean, comfortable room made the stay pleasant. Enjoyed the area and the motel was close to local attractions and concert venue.
- Sindhuri (4/5): - I didn't expect to be good with the given rating. But I am surprised there were bed bugs!! They still did good job cleaning every day after that, but bed bugs is a big thing!
- Ilan I (6/5): Nice Stay - Everything basic that a person needs, to sleep and to leave. Close to the University of Houston in case people want to attend or visit campus.
- Bonnie (4/5): - The walls and bed were not clean. Stains on the bed and sheets. Very noisy due to thin walls. I felt like I was staying with the people in the room next to me. Location is pretty sketchy, to say the least.
- Marshall (8/5): Nice price poor area - could have been better for what we paid. usually atleast get some kind of breakfast none offered here.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Not very nice.. - It was less then ok for a night.. Will not come back!
- JaCory (2/5): Bed bugs - I wouldn't recommend this hotel to ANYONE... I got tore up by bed bugs and management was unconcerned...
- Verified traveler (8/5): - I really liked staying there. It was cleaner than I thought. And it is close to TSU. But there are some few things they should care about. First adding a chain luck in side the room so guests can luck the door not just by the Normal luck which can be opened even from outside. Also they should provide tissue and a sheet with the blanket! That's all!
- Verified traveler (6/5): - cheap hotel, but perfectly adequate
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Older motel, well kept on the outside. Inside - bed really comfortable and clean, bathroom sparkly clean. Decor is a little outdated (not really a deal breaker for me). The doors and switch plates could use a cleaning. Note: there was only overhead light, no lamps. The staff was wonderful, friendly and helpful. I enjoyed my stay...and would stay again.
- katrina (6/5): - Water was not hot for showers, only luke warm.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - I stepped on glass that was left on the carpet from a previous stay. Bleeding and had to remove the glass from my foot There was also copper brillo on the carpet, everywhere. My boyfriend was guessing from people smoking crack in the room. The sheets were clean and the restroom was clean. Over all, we would not stay there again. My sister booked the room for us, not knowing the location or reading more into the place. Oh, and there was a man knocking on our door, no idea who he was. Had to call the front desk with our cell, bc there isn't phones in the room! The motel was pretty GHETTO.
- Southmore Hotel (4/5): Rough place to stay - Given the cost to stay I should not complain but I would expect the bathroom door to not be busted and the water to actually get hot
- Erline Y (4/5): Spooky - Was not the best neighborhood....The T.V. was set on Adult programming...thank God no kids weren't with us...Slept with 1 eye open.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Just what we needed for our one night - We came into town the day before a planned outpatient surgery. We just needed a place to shower and sleep as we'd be checking out early in the morning to make a 6am hospital admit. The staff was very nice. Upon unpacking, I noticed our phone charger was broken. The nearest Walgreens was already closed. The front desk was able to loan me their charger in exchange for my ID until morning.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Good for a night - While the room itself looked shabby, the bed itself looked like it belonged in a 5 star hotel. The bed was comfortable and huge. The door only had a lower lock on it, which made me uncomfortable. i am used to a secure latch on the door for safety.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - The location is not nice area but quiet residential area.
- Alexis (6/5): FREE SLUSHIES! - Free slushies really saved the day for us at this place. Our room was definitely a little dirty, but did have a microwave, fridge, and decent wifi. But slushies, as many as you want, I mean c'mon.
- Lakansha (2/5): Terrible experience - Awful. Went down to take my daughter to college day preview weekend. Desk clerk didn't speak English well. Took her 15 min to find our reservation and then tried to overcharge me. Then it took her another 30 min to get us in th room because the room key didn't work! On day of check out, they continuously called our room back to back starting at 10am until we answered to tell us we had to check out in a hour at 11am even though the website said check out was at noon. I went to front desk to show her email confirmation said 12pm and so did the website and she made us still check out at 11 or we would be charged additional day. Worst experience and misrepresentation I ever had to go through. Never again. It was close to the TSU campus but definitely not work the hassle .
- Brett (10/5): Great service and a special treat in the lobby! - Excellent staff! They lent me a nice umbrella and held my luggage while I attended a conference after checking out. And I challenge you to find these two amenities anywhere else for this price: free slurpees in the lobby and toothbrushes in the room!
- Verified traveler (4/5): You get what you pay for - Rented several rooms while in town on business for myself and coworkers. We expected it to be pretty basic based on the other reviews and have all stayed in some very sketchy places in the past, but in some ways the Southmore still surprised us.
Things we wished were better:
-One of our rooms didn't have hot water
-Some fixtures and lights are broken
-One of the refrigerators was leaky and constantly wet on the inside. Another made unholy amounts of noise at night and had to be unplugged
-The faucets didn't shut all the way in two of the rooms
-On one of the days my "fresh" towels were soaking wet and completely unusable
-Dirt (and the occasional cigarette butt) in corners of rooms and bathroom
-No hangers for clothing
-Everything is just a little grimy
Pros:
+Inexpensive
+Ok location for Uber/Taxi travel to downtown and midtown
+Free WiFi
+2 bottles of water were left in each room daily
+Good front desk service all things considered
+Nothing was stolen from my room
+Don't think I picked up any diseases
Overall, it's hardly a premium experience but we survived so it could have been worse. Fine to stay in town for a few days on the cheap, but don't rely on any of the amenities and avoid if you're squeamish.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Eh - Shower leaked all night. Other tendents fought all night. Could here everything
- Fernando (10/5): Awsome privacy - Was great privacy by location and staff!
- Verified traveler (2/5): Poorly managed motel - The hot water did not work and we informed the motel staff and they acted like they didn't care. We had to use the buckets of ice they provide and fill it up with water. We put the water in the microwave to heat it up and did that several times by dumping the hot water in the tub to take a bath. Our cable TV was not working at all. Again we informed the staff and they moved us to another room which had the same problems. The bed sheets looked horrible and we removed them and requested clean sheets. The replacement sheets were not any better. They have bed bugs!!! Absolutely disgusting
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Nothing more about it and I was thinking that if they can be able to make sure that it will be better.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - Didn't even check in. Drove off.
- noahw637 (8/5): Not too bad - The exterior of the property is less than visually appealing (there was old furniture and a basketball hoop piled in the parking lot) but the interior was well maintained and well cleaned each day. The also left a new bottle of water every day which was very nice. For the price, I would defiantly recommend this place.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Nice place to stay! Clean and hygienic rooms, friendly staff! Not too fancy, but covers all basic needs and overall decent place. Even offered nice Indian food while our stay! Definitely recommend.
- Verified traveler (2/5): Need serious rehad. - I could not hear the front desk agent from behind the bullet proof glass.
- Raymond (2/5): Chap - Thin walls, creepy, hard bed. You get what you pay for... Or less and im from the hood.
- Verified traveler (6/5): A hotel made for certain adult activities, lol - Cheapest option in area
Good television with tons of channels
Microwave and fridge, comfy bed
Room is filled with tons of mirrors all around the bed, take that how you want
- eric hood (6/5): ugh - ugh
- Michael (6/5): VERY spartan, but a good value in a good location. - First, the pros: a comfortable enough bed, the room was clean, the location very accessible to both downtown Houston and the city's important grid of freeways. It's in a pleasant neighborhood, and was a large TV with a LOT of stations (unlike in a lot of major hotels where you really get no choice of channels), and perhaps most impressively, the room had its own microwave and small refrigerator, each clean and in good operational order. No problem with hot water in the shower and the air conditioner worked well.
On the minus side, rooms are very run-down. Cosmetically it's as no-frills as you can imagine, with the furniture worn and scuffed, upholstery on my chair torn, cracked linoleum in the bathroom, etc.
So it was not much to look at, but the room was clean, bug-free, etc. And it had carpeting that was in decent shape (often hotels like this just have linoleum floors but this one actually maintains carpeting).
Bottom line: if all you need is a convenient and very cheap place to stay nearish to downtown Houston, this is a basic and functional room at a very affordable price.
