- susan (4/5): Very disappointing- the cleaner was lovely but the guy really needs to brush up on his people skills - I requested early access to the room as we were attending a wedding starting at 11.15am.
My email request many weeks before was ignored. I called a week before our stay and was told that whilst they couldn`t guarantee access to the room ( contrary to the website on booking.com) we would be able to store our luggage safely and be given the keys. Not so. Initially (having arrived at 10.30) we were denied access into the pub completely and only after much pleading did the guy pass the keys over to us and we were able to put our luggage in the room which was in the process of being cleaned.
Also, the bathroom was very small.
- Donna (8/5): - Great food. Lovely, friendly welco.e from all staff.
- jade (10/5): -
- Murylo (9/5): -
- Anita (7/5): Lovely location and say - Lovely location
Staff friendly and helpful The room was cold
Felt damp
Decor dated and needs refreshing
Didn’t think it was value for money on that basis
- Katerina (6/5): Basic, clean but wouldn’t return. - Clean, comfortable, basic. I tried to contact the accommodation by telephone and email, prior to our visit, to book dinner at the pub and got no response. We arrived around 7.45 and were told they had stopped serving food. Not impressed.
- Melvyn (9/5): -
- Rachel (9/5): Great stay in a lovely location - I liked that the room was separate from the pub, very local to Matlock. Room was a great size and felt more like a holiday home than a hotel room Everything was fine and as expected
- Debbie (9/5): A very comfortable stay - We had room no 5 and it was a lovely room, very comfortable.
The staff were very friendly and they serve lovely food Light in child's room needs replacing. Didn't see anyone on checking out to tell.
- Fisher (10/5): Great venue - All management and staff polite and helpful in every way. Food was lovely. Nice atmosphere in bar area, room was spotless and had everything needed for our short stay Could do with couple of hooks in the room
- Glenn (7/5): Tidy, clean little room. - Nice comfy little room. Did everything it needed to. Located at the top of a sizeable hill. So if you're walking make sure you are fit and healthy to tackle the hill.
- colin (7/5): - Quiet friendly staff A long walk up hill to pub. No hot water in sink. No food Sunday evening.
- lisa (7/5): - Rooms being separate from main pub Peeling paint in room, marks on the blind.
- Forrest (8/5): Very comfortable stay. - Breakfast was excellent. Room was very comfortable. Staff were very helpful I didn't realise that it was a mile walk from the station and all up a very steep hill to get there! But this would not put me off going there again.
- Adrian (8/5): Ideal & cosy & worth every penny - Lovely building, lovely food, friendly, lovely little apartment behind the pub, which was perfect & parking was easy N/a
- Valerie (9/5): Good overnight stop - It was quiet and comfortable. It was warm and the bath water was very hot and immediate. Bed mattress was a bit uncomfortable and it was a small double bed.
- Fiona (8/5): - It was practical for what we needed. Clean and tidy throughout.
- Julie (9/5): - This is the second time we have stayed here. Room was clean and comfortable. Good location. We ate at the pub in the evening and the meal was really good. This one night stay was really good value for money. Nothing negative to say.

- Danielle (10/5): Lovely homely , comforting and welcoming - Clean comfortable Only the size of the hill it was up but that’s not there fault lol
- Michael (8/5): Thank you Mike and Team. - The pub and restaurant have been done beautifully. The landlord, Mike, and his staff, were all very welcoming. There was nothing I didn't like. The room we stayed in was perfectly adequate, but perhaps could do with a slight upgrade to reflect the extremely high standards of the pub itself.
- Forrester (10/5): -
- Hayley (8/5): Nice little hotel for a night away. - A nice little pub with accommodation. Has parking, and rooms were a good size. Overall it was pleasant, but be warned its a steep downhill walk in to matlock. The rooms were lovely, but there wasn't any sugar for the tea and coffee, or glasses for a drink of water!
- mark (9/5): Weekend break - Clean rooms, Free parking, good location, quiet location Duke of Wellington felt like a gentleman club, no swearing, no entertainment on offer, no food, no atmosphere. Felt a cold place.
- Peter (8/5): Nice mid week break at DoW Matlock - Had a great Mon-Fri break at the DoW. Good accommodation and good pub. Staff were excellent. Bit of a hike up the hill outn of Matlock itself bit otherwise great location and plenty of parking. Pub quiz on Thursday evening. Would recommend. Nothing we didn't like.
- Claire (10/5): - Bed was super comfortable. Water lovely and hot. Dog friendly.
- Sandra (9/5): Why aren’t you satisfied with the answers I have given. It was perfection for us. - Nothing io dislike. It met our every need, thankyou Everything was perfect,

- Dawn (10/5): Amazing stay! - Excellent location to Matlock centre but need to drive to Matlock bath. Staff pleasant and great atmosphere. Room was perfection. Comfortable bed, absolutely loved the place. Even gave my partner a free glass, good food, good value. 10/10. Nothing, very welcoming and homely.

- Lanchbury (5/5): Easter weekend - The staff were very friendly and helpful, and the location was excellent No toiletries in the bathroom and soap was not provided although requested. No plug for the bathroom sink, no toilet brush, and the mattress was on its last legs. No-one made up the room while we were out.
Our group used 3 rooms and the same problems were had by all.
- Benoît (2/5): Unfriendly and dirty place - The pub itself looks fine. - We booked and paid for a double room but were assigned another room for kids.
- Owner is rude and unfriendly.
- Equipment is old, bathroom dates back to the 1950s.
- it smells bad.
- Poirot isolated and you can hear everything from the above room, including someone living with a big dog.
- Pete (9/5): Nive frindly staff and bar - Friendly staff let is leave our bags early. Good food in the bar, tasty and value for money Nothing. It was value for money
- Brown (2/5): - The food was oķ Too short times on all food services. Bedrooms not very clean.
- Hullspurs (8/5): -
- Wilkinson (8/5): -
- keeling (10/5): - Great place to stay, the accomodation was lovely and pub had great choice of drinks and food, the staff were very helpful
- Williams (10/5): Great pub hotel in Matlock hh - It's a lovely traditional pub. The staff are so friendly and can't do enough for you. The food is delicious and a great selection. You can meet and chat to the locals and it's dog friendly. Absolutely nothing.
- Alison (3/5): - Matlock is nice and the bar seemed nice The room and bathroom were in desperate need of a refurbishment! Bashed, old furniture in the room as well as cobwebs! Two small EMPTY bottles of shampoo in the bathroom, no soap or shower gel. No glasses, just 2 nasty mugs and a tray of coffee sachets. Towels and sheets were clean but everything else felt nasty.
It's a shame but I was glad to leave and won't be returning!
- Scott (10/5): Nice stay - Lovely friendly staff .
Private room
Good breakfast Nothing . It's was great
- Stephen (9/5): Superb hotel. Pub. Staff and location - Hotel rooms are brilliant. Really modern. Only down side for me was the bed was hard. My wife said thought it was ok so its probably just me. The bar was excellent and the food was lovely. Couldn't really fault it if im honest Hard mattress. Think its a personal thing
- helen (5/5): - Area was nice and peaceful Rooms are in need of a makeover, very dated and in need of maintenance
- Steve (9/5): -
- Mark (9/5): -
- Joseph (9/5): Very pleasant - Very comfortable and excellent staff Could have done with access to an iron
- Stephanie (6/5): The Duke - Position and parking excellent, bus stop right outside very convenient
Selection of beers good including hand pull The rooms and furnishings tired and bit grubby
Kettle difficult to fill as doesn't fit under tap
Towel had large blue mark on it
Food average and only served till 7.30pm
- Christopher (9/5): - Staff were very helpful and professional
- James (8/5): -
- Dubway75 (10/5): -
- Iara (6/5): - Location and the staff was nice and friendly Bed linen was weird and they had stains
- Julie (8/5): - Food and staff were lovely Nothing
- Gina (9/5): -
- Graham (7/5): I would return here, if alone when visiting my aunt in the nearby care home, if there was a dog free - Breakfast was plenty and delicious.
Evening meals had an excellent choice....well presented and delicious l.
I believe that the room we had, was indeed one of the three that were pet friendly, which would have been ideal, if I had brought my dog....but I would love to see what a pet free room was like....in fairness when I booked, I think all of those rooms were taken.
The staff were all AMAZING!! Basically the room, because I believe it was one of the pet friendly rooms, and fir obviously reasons, would not be ad lovely ss their regular rooms.
- Zoe (7/5): -
- Malcolm (10/5): Great place to stay - Comfortable room, clean. Staff friendly and good breakfast. Also had dinner at night, it was excellent.
- Jubb (4/5): - Location...staff very polite and friendly. Very run down ...room leaves a lot to be desired. No hairdryer .no shower gel. Needs full refurbishment and deep clean...furniture dilapidated. No instructions for heater and other controls
- Russell (9/5): Very good - Hello did not have breakfast Everything was ok
- Margaret (9/5): Absolutely fine and I stay there regularly. - Food great enjoyed evening meal and breakfast. Nice and hot and beautifully cooked and presented. The furniture in the rooms have water damage on the surface and furnishings are tired - perhaps update the heater. The bathroom floor needs some attention.
- Pauline (9/5): -
- Ann (9/5): - The staff were very friendly. The food was excellent, will highly recommend eating here. Quite a few cobwebs all around the bedroom
- Hazel (6/5): - The pub is lovely and meals are good. The accommodation needs a bit of work, bathroom very cold and couldn't get hot water from the shower. Enjoyed our stay though just a bit basic
- Jack (7/5): The stay was good value, the fixtures in the room a little below perfect, the linen etc was great. - Dinner was a little rushed, the kitchen was about to shut at 7pm. Breakfast was not included. The room was perfectly comfortable the heating was on when I arrived. There was an adequate bedside light, the bedclothes were good quality, nice towels provided and adequate tea, coffee and biscuits. The over sink light did not work, the switches for bathroom fittings, shower and radiator were not labelled. The shower slider rail was broken and the shower slid down the rail.
- Susan (6/5): Disappointed - The welcome was warm and the room very clean. The shower was very small and the bed uncomfortable. We had our evening meal at the pub my husband’s chicken was overcooked . After he pointed it out he was offered an alternative. The meat pie he chose was poor. The pastry wasn’t cooked. Very disappointed. Also if you are staying here to visit Matlock be aware there is a very steep hill to walk down. We caught a bus back!!
- Carl (10/5): -
- margaret (7/5): -
- Adele (10/5): A good night away - How the hotel rooms were away from the pub. And had a nice little courtyard we had a little fish pond outside our room. This isn't our first stay we stayed a few years ago.
The staff was really nice and helpful. We had breakfast the next morning It was very nice.
The drinks are reusable priced as we had a drink in the pub the pub toilets were nice and clean.
My only advice would be don't open the door to your room if it's a wet night the room was very hot so we opened the door to let some air in and ended up with a frog in our room but it all added to our stay and we found it funny 🤣. Nothing everything was fine.
- Gemma (5/5): A good pub but it's not a hotel. - The evening meals were good as was the hosting IN the pub in the evenings. A lovely atmosphere in the pub on our first evening gave us high hopes but it went downhill from there. The cost of breakfast was the same for a full english and the Continental. It wasn't a Continental breakfast. It was 2 small pastries. No decaf tea available. Cereal was available to anyone so cannot be said that it was the Continental breakfast. It would have been nice to have the option of some toast perhaps but the waiting staff made themselves scarce unless they were serving food so gave the impression that they really didn't want to be asked for anything.
The room was full of cobwebs which had clearly been there for some time; it really wouldn't take much to hoover those down. We had to go to the bar to ask for anything we needed in the room to top up tea and coffee making facilities and more importantly a toilet roll on the morning before we left, which we really could have done with the night before but you don't really want to go into a full bar to ask for that! We stayed for 6 nights and nobody came in to clean the room, change towels empty the bin etc until our penultimate morning on asking for the loo roll etc. The lady my husband saw seemed shocked when he said nobody had been in the room all week. She, provided him with what he asked for and suddenly during the day whilst we were out did the towels get changed and the bed made. Bit late for that. My husband's side of the mattress had also lost the springs near the top so not very comfortable unfortunately. Nobody was around on the morning we left either, despite us leaving around the time breakfast service finished. Had to chase around to try and find somebody but ended up calling an out of hours number to find out what to do. This information could easily be left in the room for guests.
- Marie (8/5): - The room was lovely and the food was very nice, we liked the location it was perfect for walking Unfortunately the bathroom light stopped working on our first night and we was hoping they would fix it but it still wasn't working when we left.
- Kevin (8/5): - Staff an pub very welcoming The hill to the pub very steep !
- Heidi (3/5): -
- Dunsmore (9/5): - All good Room could have done with a chair to sit down
- Adam (10/5): -
- Catalin (10/5): -
- Rachael (6/5): Suitable stay for one night in Matlock and reasonable price. Would book again for one night. - Price, suitable for one night. Room felt slightly cold.
- DIANE (8/5): - Good breakfast A bit bigger room
- Gregory (5/5): Overrated and overpriced - There was no food service after 2 pm on Sunday and no breakfast available next day.The walk down to macklock was.on a 1/14° hill.so you need to get a taxi back.up. landlord was rude and unhelpful No food and no breakfast. Expense just for a room. I paid £110 just for a room.
- Kevin (8/5): Warm, welcoming and comfortable, what more do you need - Accommodation was really lovely, spacious and well decorated giving a very modern cosy feel. The pub is also very good. very welcoming and friendly. Owner/staff happy to chat and advise about other places to eat, provided local taxi service numbers etc - very helpful. There wasn't much to dislike! bright light in the courtyard shines through bedroom windows/curtains but there were secondary blinds, so just needed to remember to close them also. not a problem.
- Justin (7/5): Good - Did not have It was all ok
- Kenneth (8/5): Good stopover - Didn't have breakfast
- Rachael (6/5): Suitable for one night stay. Reasonably priced. - One of the cheaper properties in Matlock. Would help if they inform people arriving by train there is a steep hill to climb, however it can be reached by bus which stops conveniently close by.
- Michelle (8/5): I enjoyed my stay and will return again. - The rooms were lovely. Away from the pub. The food was good and the staff were very friendly. As a solo traveler I was made to feel very welcome. My room wasn’t cleaned during my stay. I had no milk for my morning cuppa.
- Joanne (6/5): 3 star stay - The accommodation looks beautiful from the outside and the family room we had was was really cozy. Phoned a week before coming to see if we could book a table for food in the pub and was told getting one wouldn't be a problem. On arrival we were told because it was a bank hol they weren't doing food. After a day of lots of walking and my two young children having really tired legs we then had to walk into town when we had hoped for a quiet evening in. We didn't travel by car and if we knew this in advance we would have eaten out before checking in.
Secondly the room wasn't that clean. In several drawers there were bits of rubbish including something furry in one of them. There was also a used tissue on the floor. I didn't see these until my kids were already in bed so wasn't able to go and mention it. I know it's not a huge issue but this was one of the downsides to staying here.
Finally, We nipped to get some drinks to take up to our room before going to bed and asked the young man if they would be open at 9.30am for us to check out and bring the glasses down as we had a taxi picking us up. Was assured they would be but they weren't so we had no choice but to post the room key through the letter box and leave our glasses on a table outside. Ideally we wanted to be able to communicate with the staff to tell them about our minor issues
- Elaine (7/5): Just what was needed - Gorgeous pub, friendly staff and amazing food . Rooms are very tired and could be better cleaned, there was a smell of dogs so would be good to have rooms that didn't allow dogs in Good location, old fashioned pub with great staff and food
- Karen (10/5): Brilliant - Excellent place to stay, made very welcome by the staff, superb breakfast
Highly recommend Nothing
- Julie (9/5): Was an excellent stay food was lovely just a bit different they didn’t do Sunday dinner - I liked that the rooms were off from the pub itself
- Julie (7/5): Friendly - Quirky Could be cleaner
- janine (8/5): - Stand alone old stables as accommodation
- BAMFORD BOOTH (10/5): -
- Robert (4/5): We got the impression that one of the staff with the dog didn’t want us there ?? - So much dust ect in the beds / couldn’t sleep for itching
- Raja (1/5): -
- Chris (5/5): Very disappointing - Location No welcome, cold room, poor heating, cobwebs, squeaky bed, very old tiny small tv. Ordered breakfast but given just 25 mins and asked to leave. We chose this hotel as it was Green King but it turned out not to be and our GK was not recognised / useable.
- John (9/5): The Duke of Wellington more than provided for our needs, and we enjoyed our stay - The staff and the accommodation.
- Brown (10/5): Lovely staff . Made to feel welcome. Will definitely be going back -
- Wendy (10/5): Warm and comfortable room, excellent breakfast and evening meal in the pub itself. - Easy parking, convenience of wandering the tiny distance to the pub for really good, tasty food - both breakfast and evening meal. Comfortable cosy rooms. Nothing to dislike
- Tommy (8/5): -
- Debbie (9/5): Comfortable and great food - Very friendly staff ,excellent food
Comfy and warm room Could do with reflector on the wall as you enter
One of the duvets were stainef
- Stevan Yates (9/5): Clean welcoming and recommened - The room was very clean the bed comfy the food was very nice. Abit of walk into centre but thats what we wanted. Overall we would defo come back here again The walk back up the hill lol
£4 for a taxi is the best option but dont let this put you off its just a heads up
