Guest Reviews
- Carol (2/5): The stay was not good. I would not do it again. - We didn't have breakfast The\nRoom smelled of sewer gas.The bathroom smells so badly of sewer gas that we couldn't even shower there and the bathroom door did not shut so that we couldn't stop the smell from coming into the rule.It was disgusting we arrived to early to check-in, so left our luggage and went to when we came back at 4 o'clock. The door was locked, but we had no key and no way to get in.\ we called, and we're told someone we let us in right away, but we waited in the rain and cold for at least 10 minutes.Having to call another two times
- Bowton (3/5): Not impressed - The location was brilliant. There was a terrible smell from the drains in the bathroom. It was so bad that we did not use it. To top it off, we couldn't even close the bathroom door without wedging something against it to keep the reek out of the bedroom.
A good clean would also do wonders.
- Stephen (8/5): -
- Geoff (8/5): Really enjoyable, fab breakfast - Location is superb. Room and price paid were excellent. En-suite too small The en-suite was too small
- TABATHA (7/5): -
- Tony (10/5): A great venue, made special by proficient staff with experience and compassion for all the customer. - The venue was excellent and the staff were amazing in all areas that met our needs. The breakfast was freshly cooked and tasted delicious. The rooms are very cosy and we would definitely recommend this venue. Not applicable.
- Tamra (8/5): A very quiet historic hotel with charm to boost your soul and rest your body. - This hotel is a historic treasure with a large room and fair sized bath in the heart of Woodstock. A charming venue with newer furniture and room to walk around despite luggage in the room. Five minutes around the corner is the public walking path through the beautiful Blenheim Palace gardens with breathtaking view! For similar priced hotels breakfast was included. A cafe is located in the adjacent hall and offered a great menu including Eggs Benedict.
- Thomas (10/5): -
- Anthea (8/5): - Very convenient location in the centre of Woodstock, only 5 minutes drive from Blenheim Palace.
- Janet (10/5): - Very clean Nothing
- Jeff (9/5): A very comfortable accommodation in a ideal position in the centre of Woodstock - The staff were attentive to all our needs nothing too much trouble.
Our room was well appointed with everything we needed.
Bed was very comfortable with quality bedding and pillows.

Location was perfect. There was nothing we did not like

Best shower in a long time!

- Anne (9/5): Amazing staff, immaculate room, fantastic location - Location was amazing as we could walk to local restaurants/shops/pubs etc . 5 minutes walk to Blenheim Palace and gardens. Fabulous comfy bed. Bedroom beautiful and immaculate. Great breakfast. Friendly informative and helpful staff The handle on the bathroom door didn’t work. The shower wash dispenser didn’t work. The bedroom window was jammed shut
- Erica (10/5): - Always friendly , clean and cosy Nothing
- James (8/5): Nice quaint cozy place to sleep for the night. - Nice quiet. Nothing
- Elena (10/5): -
- David & Fran Johnston (9/5): - Comfortable hotel, nice meals and friendly staff.
- Annabella (8/5): Lovely B& B In central Woodstock. - The shower room had been built Into a cupboard so was a tight squeeze, door was stiff just needed adjusting, just a few minor niggles with the maintenence but nothing major hence 8 score, otherwise fine for a short stay.
- Philip (3/5): Not the best - Location was good , Jo a member of staff was helpful Could have been a lot cleaner.
En-suite and toilet not clean at all.
Door furniture very poor , risk of cutting your hands . Ensuite door kept jamming.
Bed poor and of poor quality .
- Margaret (10/5): -
- Anna (7/5): -
- Mark (9/5): -
- Angie (9/5): - The furniture The footboards
- David (10/5): -
- Osullivan (7/5): Location, location, location - Location for visit to Blenheim Palace and number of places to eat and drink nearby Parking can be a little complicated
External stairs would be an issue if you had mobility problems
Furniture in the room was too big, it was looking worn in places and could have benefited from a deep clean
- Alex (8/5): Delightful little spot, more than adequate for a night or 2 but wouldn’t want to make it a base for exploring the local - Quaint little spot, nice and central for Woodstock too. Bathroom was a bit cramped and there was only 1 chair to sit on in the room.
- Alison (10/5): A great inexpensive overnight in Woodstock for visiting Blenheim Palace - Location is perfect for Blenheim Palace, being
above the lovely coffee shop and perfect for nearby options for eating out for our evening meal.
Room was simple and comfortable and the coffee shop for breakfast was ideal - food and staff lovely.
- Sacha (10/5): -
- David (10/5): - Everything Everything was excellent.
- Tracey (10/5): We'll be back! - Loved our little mini break. Excellent location, very friendly and helpful staff and AMAZING breakfast. We will definitely be back.
- Kathryn (6/5): Fine. A small room for 2. - I liked the location & the courtyard. The many stairs, uneven floors, & weird mini step in the bathroom were wretched on my knees.
- Andrew (9/5): Had lovely enjoyable stay at buttery - Location in Woodstock and very quiet in town Windows in room were dirty difficult to see out of them.
Would be good to have option of breakfast included
No chair for dressing table
- Mike (8/5): Nice stay - Convenient location No parking
- Margaret (8/5): -
- Lionel (10/5): - Liked everything staff,(poss owners),location 5 min walk to Blenheim Palace grounds, room and breakfast.Hope to stay there again.
- David (10/5): - Home comforts..and friendly staff.. Nothing..
- Ruth (10/5): - Molto convwniente a woodstock e Bleinham Palace a piedi. Carino posto e lo staff molto veloce e pronti ad aiutare.
- Anita (9/5): - The ambience, location and staff. The steps and stairs. Okay if you don't have a suitcase.
- Elizabeth (7/5): -
- M L (8/5): -
- Ian A Cole (10/5): A great placenta stay - 3rd time we have stayed there and all was excellent. Maybe next time we will try the breakfast as on our first visit it wasn't all that good
- Ian (9/5): - Everything was excellent. Characterful room. Very good value. Helpful staff. Perfect location. Nothing!
- Brian (7/5): - Location is central to the town and very convenient for Marlborough Breakfast was a bit sparse
- Kathlene (8/5): Wonderful stay. Lovely staff. Incredible breakfast included. Very cosy and very central. - Wonderful welcome by a lovely young woman, who also served us breakfast the following morning. Lovely sized rooms and cosy decoration. Bathroom is a bit rusted and outdated. Stairs to access rooms, including metal outdoor ones - something to bare in mind if staying with a disability. Also fobs meant to lock outside doors didn’t seem to work (doors always open) - however you do have a physical key to lock your bedroom.
- Hilde Valen (10/5): Great stay, good value for the money and friendly staff! - We didn’t have breakfast due to other arrangements. But complementary coffee and water in the room was great! Quiet place and nice and comfortable beds. A bit hard to locate the exact adress, location might be announced more precise
- Gaz W (5/5): Cheap, but not very cheerful - The location.
It was clean Misleading facilities: Parking was included in the facility list. The only parking is public and had to be paid for. You could put everything in your facilities list if it meant going out and paying for it!
Check in is 3pm onwards. The "restaurant" closes at 4pm!
No heating in the room in the evening or overnight. Heating and hot water didn't come on until 8am.
Proof that you really do get what you pay for. Cheap but not very cheerful. Wouldn't stay again.
- William Dewi (9/5): Lovely tradition room (No6) with everything that was needed in a great location and excellent vaule for money. - Location was perfect for drinks, meal and of course Blenheim Palace. Nothing to mention.
- Kevin (9/5): Great stay in good location and very comfy room - Great stay on our way down to catch the ferry back home to Guensey. The room was comfortable, the location great and the staff all very friendly - enjoyed the full english breakfast. Good value for money, will stay again Nothing
- norman (9/5): - Excellent stay 👌
- Joanna (8/5): - Lovely breakfast and staff very friendly Decor and furnishings a little tired looking
- Niall (9/5): -
- John (7/5): A good value stay in central location - would stay again - A characterful period property in an ideal, central location. Clean rooms and a very good breakfast and good service. Room 3: Some maintenance issues, shower head holder was broken, shower room fan not working and ceiling light in shower room not working. Mattress is collapsing and in need of replacement.
- Pam (10/5): - Great central location with free parking not far away
- Emma (8/5): - Location Nothing
- Christina (1/5): We didn’t stay. It was closed and our money was taken - Nothing. Closed on arrival. Money taken. No communication of this. Nothing
- Lynne (6/5): Room for improvement - The towels were large and fluffy. Water pressure in the shower was excellent and plentiful. Location is brilliant for access to pubs, restaurants, cafes and Blenheim Palace The accommodation is part of the Blenheim Buttery cafe. The website for the Buttery says it's open every day until 5pm. Check in for the room is between 2pm and 5pm. After 5pm, you are supposed to notify the owners of your late arrival.
We arrived at 4.15pm on Friday after a long drive to find the cafe was closed and another person was also trying to check in. There was a mobile number to ring for late arrivals (we weren't late). The other person had rung the number several times but got no reply. There was another for "problems at the accommodation"
My husband called this number on the basis that there was a "problem" since there was no one available to check us in.
The man who answered said we had to ring the mobile number which we explained we already had and got no response. The man became verbally aggressive. My husband firmly suggested that the man should try the mobile number on behalf of the three of us who were trying to check in. The man responded aggressively saying he didn't like our attitude and hung up.
A couple of minutes later, a young lady opened the door, checked the two parties in and showed us to our rooms.
Not a great start.
Bedroom 3 was cosy and welcoming although the shelves in the wardrobe and on the top of the wardrobe were too dusty to put any clothing/bags on.
The overhead light and extractor in the shower room did not work but thankfully there was a light above the mirror.
The information on booking.com said this was a four star accommodation and included a hairdryer. There was no hairdryer in the room and definitely wasn't four star.
We appreciate it is a very old building but every time someone walked along the corridor outside our room, the metal framed bed shook even when sitting on it.
We had the option to pay for breakfast in the cafe each morning with a 10% discount which was appreciated although we preferred to get breakfast elsewhere.
- Robert (10/5): It’s a lovely, comfortable place with delightful staff . - Lovely cottage bedroom, full of character and very comfortable. Nothing.
- Rutger (8/5): -
- Julie (10/5): - What a lovely stay! In the heart of Woodstock within walking distance of Blenheim Palace and a good bus service to Oxford. We were a little early so took advantage of the fabulous menu whilst our room was finished. Everyone was friendly and helpful and we were taken through the courtyard and shown our room. The room was overlooking the square, was comfortable and had everything we needed for an overnight stay. Breakfast was included and was excellent and the staff were friendly and attentive! All in all a wonderful stay and will definitely be back! Nothing!
- Sarah (8/5): -
- Emptyhen (10/5): - Stayed there a couple of times and the rooms were great. Shower was nice and powerful with plenty hot water. First stay was amazing but the second was tarnished very slightly by being next to the main door. There is a switch on the wall by the door whose click sounds louder in the room than it does in the corridor. I should have been thinking about getting up anyway so not a big problem...
- Damon (9/5): Great over night stay - Great location an great value for money Could hear people talking through walls early!
- Karen (10/5): -
- Patrick (9/5): -
- Victoria (8/5): Great location for a Woodstock visit - Great location in comfy room, friendly staff. Shower room could have been a little warmer (no heater in that room)
- Julian (8/5): Great value but customer service could be improved - Excellent value for money. Great location, comfortable bed. A somewhat bizarre check in. I arrived and called the mobile number and was told that there wasn’t a booking in my name. Eventually a lady let me in and said I hadn’t got a booking. I asked for the internet code and the woman shrugged her shoulders- there was no mobile signal. Eventually I got a signal and showed my booking.com reservation. The lady took me into the office and showed me the screen and I pointed to my name! She didn’t say much just handed me a key and pointed to where my room was!
- Greg_Zlo (8/5): -
- Ian (9/5): -
- Michael (8/5): - Breakfast ok . Service good.
- Nickols (8/5): - Very good location. Easy check-in after 5pm. Comfortable rooms. The bathroom in one of the rooms had some mould around the tiles and some rotten wood bath panelling.
- Mitchell (9/5): -
- Lynn (8/5): - Great location.
- Reynolds (10/5): -
- Guest (8/5): -
- James (10/5): Wonderful little place - Beautiful little properly. Certainly friendly staff. Room was lovely. Great little place
- Rob (8/5): -
- Esme (7/5): A comfortable place for a short stay. - The bedroom/bathroom was clean and comfortable.
The Buttery is very well placed, in the centre of Woodstock: easy access to Blenheim Palace.
The recent renovations in the reception:
/ restaurant area are very well done and attractive. The breakfast was dry and inedible; when I complained, I was offered extra toast!
The tv in the bedroom was not tuned in…
- Benedict (8/5): An easy overnight countryside stay - Comfortable, quiet, easy check-in, convenient for Woodstock. Nice room, quirky but well laid out. Easy access for out of hours fob. The extraction fan did not appear to work, so shower steam needed venting via the window.
Sometimes the floor outside creaked or moved as people walked past in the corridor, a quirk of the historicsl building.
Upstairs so need good mobility for stone steps.
Parking is in main square, 8am-6pm via Ringo app or payment machines.
- TOM (9/5): My go to venue in Woodstock - VFM and situation Banging door in courtyard all night in the wind.
- Phill (8/5): - Central location, good food. Friendly and helpful staff. The room was dark at the facility area. Could do with double glazing.
- R.D. (8/5): -
- James (10/5): -
- Tracey (8/5): Definitely worth staying here. Fantastic breakfast! - Great location.
Comfortable bed and fantastic breakfast.
Staff friendly and helpful.
Good value for money. Abit more attention needed to cleaning and dusting bedroom/bathroom.
This would have made our scores higher.
- Rachel (8/5): A lovely stay and amazing value for money. - Central location, really close to Blenheim Palace. Lovely traditional Cotswold building. Nice decor. Very comfortable beds. The bathroom was a good size but could have done with a deep clean or grout cleaner.
- Evelyn (9/5): - After walking 20 miles I had very relaxing time at the Blenheim Buttery. Its location was very good, the 17th century house authentic with a bit uneven floors and old bay windows and other period features, the shower was hot with good pressure and tea tray had lots of complimentary things. Very good value for money! The radiator was very dusty.
- Ellie (6/5): Great place, but breakfast didn’t match what was offered in the rooms! - Woodstock is beautiful, we have visited several times. The building was lovely, clean, most staff were friendly. Breakfast did not meet the menu! In the rooms, as a pre planner I had my heart set on a omelette! Sadly when asking I was told no, they changed their menu. The young serving could also do with a smile or two!
- Mark (5/5): Great location, good response by email when questions answered, just very let down by main entrance. - Large room, good television. Nice outside courtyard space. Room very hot, no air con. Security felt poor - front door and secondary door to public often didn't lock. Toilet by front door not ventilated and extractor fan not working - so lobby smelt of sewage when we checked in. Front entrance between two overfull bins covered in wasps. Orange squash instead of orange juice served for breakfast.
- Karen (8/5): -
- Joanne (8/5): Lovely stay beautiful part of the world - Central location, close to Blenheim palace lovely room. Great sandwich sop next door Service at breakfast was a bit poor
- Steve (4/5): Value for money, lovely building and setting but the rooms need a revamp. - Breakfast was fine, to be critical the bacon was overcooked and coffee only warm, otherwise good. The double room, well, it's fine for an overnight but cramped for 2. Shower room really small, a bit grubby, shower head loose. Cup stains on the bedside cabinet, poor decor. But the cheapest in Woodstock, ideal for a work stopover but not for a holiday. WiFi didn't work, electrical issues.
- Chris (7/5): -
- Sally (5/5): Great location, and breakfast, but disappointing accommodation - The location is excellent
The WiFi worked
The breakfast and coffee was excellent It’s very tired, decor and furniture and fixings - the bed springs can be felt (room 4) and the fan in the bathroom was spitting dust and grime onto the toilet. The shower was lime-scaled and sink had cracks. The window wouldn’t shut, and was dirty. The room was cold, the radiator didn’t work even after trying to turn it on.
- Wanching (9/5): Wonderful stay - Well located with a cosy, clean, comfortable room
- Nicola (10/5): -
- Steve (7/5): Pleasant place, good location, friendly staff, clean room although small. Ideal if you are stopping - Breakfast was a little overcooked , not greasy, acceptable. Room was small, but ok, I struggled in the bathroom as it was really small. Bed creaked everything you moved.
