Guest Reviews
- Dale (10/5): Staying in a real authentic Hawaiian person's home made us feel part of Hawaii. Not just visitors. - it was being in a Hawaiian person's home. it can't get better. Nothing. Everything was provided for us to relax and settle in.
- Galia (10/5): Above all expectations. - The best guesthouse B&B I’ve stayed in.
It’s like a wonder land. Generously equiped with everything you need and more. The landlady really likes her guests and care about them. Highly recommended. Nothing
- Richard (10/5): Wish we had more time to stayed to - Absolutely gorgeous with personality! Very original, eclectic and homey. Had everything. Location minutes from downtown. Not a thing
- Jared (10/5): -
- Matthew (10/5): Great place to stay - A great stay well situated a short distance from central Hilo. Very spacious and had everything we needed from beach towels, to the most well stocked kitchen I've ever stayed at. The place is well furnished with lots of cool ornaments. We counted 27 clocks, there may have been more. Nothing!
- Jan (10/5): Host thought of everything we could need. - We liked the space. There were a lot of rooms to enjoy. There was a full kitchen, living room, den, 1.5 bathrooms and a great outside area.
- Yuka (10/5): Like fairy tale world! - Everything is perfect, peaceful. I enjoyed very much. Nothing!
- Cecilia (10/5): - I love this charming spacious home. It was conveniently located close to downtown and other amenities (farmers market, cafes, grocery stores, restaurants, etcetera) with allocated free parking. The home was well equipped with an array of potential needs we may have had as travelers (e.g., beach towels, shampoo, cooler for picnics). They also provided plenty of information about the area which we found very helpful because Hilo was our base to explore Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa, the Hamakua Coast and Volcano National park. They also provided cultural literature which we appreciated because for us this was also a cultural trip. Overall, this was an excellent location (safe and quiet) to explore other areas.
- Angel (10/5): Muy bien - La disponibilidad de todo lo necesario, como en casa, más cantidad de bebidas, comidas y amenities gratis Nada
- Nick (9/5): - The garden, lots of space for two people, the quirkiness the building, the friendliness of the owner The location is a bit off the beaten track
- Tina (10/5): Exceptional - We had a very pleasant stay in this beautiful house. Such fantastic decor. All sorts of things available in the kitchen. Snacks waiting for us at arrival. Loved it.
- Mark (8/5): Comfortable accommodations - like stepping into your "Auntie's" home in a convenient Hilo location. - Hale Kawehi is a unique opportunity to stay in a true local setting with exceptional authentic adornments in a quiet residential neighborhood. Located just a few minutes from town and easy access to regional activities. Many nice sitting sites inside and out depending on mood/interest. Great night time light accenting on timers. Host has good upkeep of home and very easy to work with being attentive if contacted but otherwise leaves guests to themselves. Vary nice local feel with strong Aloha Spirit. It seems obvious the host is passionate about collecting true regional artifacts, many of museum quality. Very interesting and fun to explore but can make spaces seem a little cluttered if unaccustomed to such. This is the host's main living space, so understand and this is not a complaint, just observation. Good for guests to know going in that care is appropriate.
- Matthew (9/5): A good fit for our stay in Hilo - Right in the heart of Hilo, easy access to most everything you'll need. Quiet neighborhood and peaceful lanai. Covered parking a plus for those rainy times.
- Alexandre (8/5): Overall a warm, welcoming experience with lots of nice touches. - Overall, a beautiful guest house (which seems to be the front half of a house - with the back half occupied by the owner), with a lush garden and beautiful front patio that was perfect for taking a lazy breakfast in the sunshine. The house just a 5 minutes drive from downtown Hilo (and about 30 minutes walk).
The owner of the house was very friendly and came to introduce herself and to let us know that Hilo celebrates NYE with fairly unique fireworks displays ;)
The kitchen was very well equipped so we could make full meals for ourselves during our stay. There were also lots of little complementary drinks (water and sodas) and food items (including muffins!) which made it feel quite welcoming. There were also lots of towels for bath and beach use!
The decor was very personal and comfortable and they had an amazing selection of books. A bit more attention could be given to cleaning the shelves in the kitchen where plates are stored. (lots of dust accumulation)
- Mike (9/5): Superb -
- Steve (10/5): Very comfortable, appreciated the large spaces which felt like staying in a family home. - Small snacks provided on arrival made us feel welcome.
Very spacious - part of a house so included 2 living areas and a well-equipped kitchen with dining room; also access to a front courtyard with seating as well as a sitting area on a side verandah!
- Walter (8/5): Very happy - Very Hawaii It's Hawaii, very humid / hot
- Chad (10/5): A fantastic place for a couple on vacation. - This was the most home like guest house I have stayed at. It felt like your grandmother's house blended with the local Hawai'ian theme. It has 2 out door and 3 indoor social areas in addition to the bedroom and bathroom. It was perfect for me and my girlfriend to vacation in.
- Michael (10/5): Exceptional -
- Gayle (10/5): Comfortable and quiet during the day - Personal entry, garage and living area’s. Lots of fresh air, and plants.
- Rachel (9/5): Superb - We loved our stay at Hale Kawehi Guesthouse! The house is spacious and we had everything we needed- breakfast and snacks foods were even provided. There are lots of lovely seating areas, inside and outside. The house gets great air flow, as some of the only doors are fly screen doors. The quirky vibe is lots of fun! The facilities and full kitchen were great. Thank you for having us stay! Nothing we didn't like, just some things to be aware of. The bed is very soft - great for people who love a soft bed!
- Dale (10/5): We felt at home in true Hawaii. - We enjoyed fixing what we wanted from the available selections. There is nothing we would change.
- Sumitra (10/5): - The property was quaint and very cute with all the necessary things and very upto date details on everything
- Rosalind (9/5): Well located, comfortable, and thoughtfully furnished. - Hale Kawehi was a real delight - not just a regular 1BR apartment, but effectively a furnished whole house - including two sitting rooms and wrap-around balcony. It was a great base for our four days of sightseeing on the Big Island, and lacks nothing for comfort. Well furnished throughout, the kitchen was the best stocked we have ever encountered. Would definitely stay at Hale Kawehi again. No complaints whatsoever.
- Willard (10/5): Exceptional - Quirky and delightful oasis in Hilo. Friendly and available hostess. Well supplied with snacks and breakfast items. Great comfortable decks for reading and dining. If walk to beach access is important this is not available. Lots of interesting knickknacks in the guesthouse so probably not suitable for small children
- Rosemary (10/5): Let's do it again ! - We loved it! It felt very shabby chic..our favorite was the sitting areas inside n outside. Every area was comfortable, attractive n very inviting..security was awesome no worries, location was perfect for our conference..no problem s..lots of amenities. Good choice on my part!! Would love to come back! No rice spoon, missed meeting our host
- Fred (7/5): Open space: Lots of Stuff - The courtyard was inviting. The kitchen area was open and welcoming. Host left treats and option for wine purchase. Responsive
Host. There wasn’t a good place to unpack. I like funky stuff, but the place felt cluttered. Husband enjoyed counting all 25 clocks.
- zafrira (10/5): - Big surprise. The house is like staying in a family home surrounded by beautiful cuckoo clocks and other items of a long lost past. Magic garden.
- Linda (10/5): - Very well equipped. Just wish more than the bedroom was air conditioned. Other than that everything was great. My husband and I both really enjoyed the place. We would stay there again
- Samantha (10/5): Yes. - This place was so amazing I don't ever want to choose a hotel again. I'm going to look up guest houses from here on out. The place was eclectic and thoughtful with a bunch of little touches and it felt like authentic Hawaii.
- Naveen (10/5): - Enjoyed the property and the ambience very much. Kawehi has done an excellent job is providing everything, even to the minutest detail. Enjoyed the garden and outside pergola very much. Plenty of room in this very quaint house which was private with a separate entrance. Excellent, thanks Kawehi!
- Verified traveler (2/5): - False advertising, room looks nothing like photos.
- Matthew (10/5): Private hideaway in downtown Hilo - Quaint and comfortable with lots of space to move around!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Every detail was perfect! Beautiful decor --inside and out. Felt like such a sanctuary!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Property is like home. If you wanted to cook the kitchen is well set up
- Mike (8/5): - A unique property steeped in Hawaiian history and culture plus a host happy to share a lifetime of Island experiences.
- heather (10/5): Lovely house. We loved our night there. - Quirky fun place to stay.
This is a huge house, not just a room. Dry well equipped and comfortable
- Connie (10/5): Experience living Hawaiian-style! - This very Hawaiian-style home is so sweet! Antiques throughout, very clean, open-air screening surrounds, and lots of amenities: great Kona coffee, arrival croissants/pastries, comfy beds/pillows,etc. Very spacious. Wine available for a minimal charge. Great place to stay close to Hilo coastal area, and experience living there!
- Verified traveler (10/5): Quaint Guest House - Thoroughly enjoyed my stay at Hale Kawehi. Clean, comfortable and supplied with anything you would need for an enjoyable stay. Conveniently located near Old Town Hilo. Charming Inn Keeper and very helpful with suggestions of wonderful restaurants and sites to visit.
- Lori (10/5): Hilo Holiday Home - A place to discover with its antique decor and garden sanctuary . Use it as a base or sanctuary for discovering the East side of Hawaii. The delightful owner cares about helping you to have a fulfilling visit to an Island area she is proud of calling home.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Cute place - The place is filled with unique antique looking things. It provided everything we needed (fridge, kitchen and kitchen appliance) it was a very comfortable stay. The only negative thing I have to say was that the two days I stayed there, the weather was hotter than usual so sleeping at night was a little hard just because it was very warm. It helped with opening the windows and putting on two fans but It was pretty warm.
- David (8/5): Surprisingly good - Really nice. Bedroom and bathroom has a private, locked door. Kitchen and living room are huge. Easy 20 minute walk to the waterfront shops. About a 45 minute drive to Volcsnoes National Park. Only negative is the outside noise. There's a barking dog next door (does not bark at night) and the birds/frogs make a racquet. That said, I slept fine, but the host does provide ear plugs if you have issues sleeping in noisy surroundings.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Very Nice Home-like Place - This is a really nice guesthouse with a kitchen, fridge, dining areas, multiple porches, plenty of sofas and recliners. The gardens are nice. The location is great, close to Hilo and close to a lot of attractions. Laundry service is available for a very nominal charge. The owner is very friendly and very knowledgable.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Stay here if you want to feel at home! :) - Hale Kawehi far exceeded our expectations! Unlike any hotel we could have stayed at, Hale Kawehi was like being at home! The house was spacious and the garden was beautiful. We had a little Japanese White Eye (bird) come visit us each morning as we ate our breakfast on the porch outside. Nighttime was very relaxing as well. We were able to enjoy a bit of TV in the living area which offered two big, cozy recliners and later fell asleep to the sounds of the frogs/nature in the bedroom. The kitchen has all sorts of dishes and utensils to use so you can make your own meals. Kawehi was a gracious host, respected our privacy, and even cored the fresh pineapple we picked up! There is no doubt in our minds that if we ever return to Hilo, this is where we plan to stay again!
- Colleen (8/5): Friendly Owner - This place was very quaint. Not having a vehicle it was about 20 minute walk to town,
but it was a nice pleasant walk. Coming from Australia, we didn't want to drive.
- KennethR (8/5): staying in Hilo - We were warmly greet by the owner and she told many interesting stories about the Hawaiian culture. The space is large with several outdoor areas with comfortable seating and Hawaiian greenery. Everything that you need is available in the large open kitchen. The home is older with an older bathroom and single beds. But everything worked and it was very clean.
