Guest Reviews
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Owner was very knowlegable and friendly, also spoke English well
- Anders (6/5): Good, with room for improvements - Superior staff in the breakfast area!
Central location
Old rooms, but good for the price.
- kroomad (6/5): German hotel located in the centre - The hotel is well located near Darmstadt main square and shopping streets. The rooms and buildings were a bit outdated, the elevator was broken in the side building where my room was located. Very small shower, I could hear noises from the other guests and from the street. Staff was friendly and breakfast was nice. Overall my stay was ok but I didn't rest much in the end.
- Haibat (8/5): Good if you don’t have children - It was OK for the price.
- FlyingPans (8/5): - Since the hotel is 2nd and 3rd floors of the restaurant, it is noisy at night.
Keine Klimaanlage !
- Verified traveler (2/5): - Hotelzimmer grundlegend renovierungsbedürftig. Im Grunde nur ein 1-Sterne-Hotel.
- Bernd (8/5): Einfach aber OK - Zimmer und Service OK, Frühstück eher na ja...
- Verified traveler (2/5): Hotel is not worth star one. A very old and comfor - Hotel is not worth star one. A very old and comfortable
- Verified traveler (6/5): Oh well - A sad little hotel who does not live up to it's historic status. It should be charming, but isn't. Relatively cheap, though, close to city centers post WW2 urban center and traffic hub. I recommend Mathildenhöhe, 15 min walk away.
- pdxdad (4/5): Good location, nice garden restaurant, nice staff but mediocre hotel - The hotel is located in the pedestrian zone and is a 5 minute walk to TU Darmstadt and the "darmstadium" congress center. The restaurant in the garden is nice and pleasant. Unfortunately, the hotel facilities are lacking - the elevator is (permanently?) out of order, the showers were cold (no hot water for me one morning and my colleague in his room had the same), the single rooms are extremely small, the double rooms are slightly better, and the ambiance is noisy (right in town with noisy neighboring businesses and barking dogs) and the breakfast was less nice than many I experienced elsewhere. The people were nice and aimed to please but I would not recommend the hotel nor would I stay here again.
- P4216ZCpeterr (8/5): Traditional food, rustic rooms - The hotel has very friendly staff and are quite helpful, especially Mr. Hollis. The rooms are simple with a german rustic touch, especially in the top floors where the old wooden structures are visible. A good deal for the price - try the Wiener Schnitzel with Spaetzle!
- Allan V (8/5): Really good value for money - Central location, old authentic atmosphere, good basic rooms. Breakfast not fantastic.
- Javier (6/5): Hotel accettabile in una posizione ottima - Albergo corretto.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Kaputte Badezimmerdecke und durchgelegene Matratze.
- RebeccaN1 (6/5): Fresh fish - The first time I went to this restaurant it was excellent service. I sat inside and the waiter was a nice gentleman. I used my German app on my iPhone and worked great. The second time I went with my husband and sat outside but our waiter was grumpy. The third time I took a colleague and we had the same grumpy waiter. We won't be going back. The fish was excellent so no complaints about the food but only the waiter. A great restaurant is not just about the food but the service needs to be excellent as well.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - This room was small and cozy with it's only detraction being a miniscule shower with a curtain. The room was very clean and while clearly not new, everything was in good condition.
As a hotel in the larger perspective, the history of the hotel was very interesting and the restaurant was good, I suggest trying the asparagus. Darmstadt was a fun city to visit and the hotel is central to shopping, museums and a lot of restaurants as well as being near a hub where many public transportation routes come together.
- ACCallender (4/5): A poor lunch ... - On recommendation from friends who had been there the previous evening, we decided to have our lunch here - a big disappointment. We chose the set menu that had a couple of choices on it. The starters were OK (small salad, small soup). The mains were very basic, essentially battered fish & tasteless potato salad, battered chicken & chips - both dishes pretty tasteless. Dessert was fruit salad, again very small and basically bits of apple with a couple of pieces of water melon - quite tasty, but very unimaginative. Overall, not recommended, despite the modest price - somewhat unsatisfactory and unsatisfying. Service was unusual as the different dishes we chose were delivered to our table at different times! Not what one would or should expect.
- MaverickRover (6/5): Nice location and historic hotel - So the hotel itself is known for being one of the very historic ones(reportedly the oldest) in Darmstadt. It's centrally located in Luisenplatz, the main shopping area and well connected to the rest of city.
The rooms are dated but well maintained with very friendly staff at service. Not bad for short business visits to Darmstadt.
- Ahmad_Ardalan (8/5): Good local hotel - Location 10/10 (right in the center, in front of a supermarket, close to many restaurants, bars)
Very clean rooms, good size. They were a bit old, but very cozy. Breakfast was good, fine selections of cheese, juices, and cold cuts.
Friendly staff.
8/10
- 93audel (6/5): Not for business. For a weekend maybe - The good stuff first: location, bed, cleaning service, breakfast
The bad stuff: freezing cold in the room upon arrival ( took 2 hours to warm up with the extra electrical heater), stinks of fried food all over the second floor, bathroom is tired, phone didn't work., wifi terrible in the evening when i had work to do.
Overall you pay for the location not the housing quality. So for a tourist week end in darmstadt not too bad, but for a conference at the nearby darmstadium eeally not ideal.
- larserikb_13 (4/5): Old and "tired" hotel in a central location - Bockshaut is located near the university of Darmstadt, it is old in all ways, and definitely needs a large upgrade. The rooms are cold and in very need of a redecoration. This also goes for the bathrooms. The hotel also has a restaurant with a small menu. The food, as the hotel, needs an upgrade. The wine list is short, and overall, it is difficult to recommend either the hotel or the restaurant, apart from the price. It does not cost much.
- David (8/5): Historic Quaint and Cozy - Had a great 3 day stay in the heart of Darmstadt. We enjoyed historic walks, castles and fine dining in the local area and traveled to outskirts with a rental car. The hotel was small, but professionally run. Unfortunately they had ongoing Wi-Fi issues and limited connection which hindered our ability to set up other excursions...and no coffe in room or in lobby, had to walk across the plaza for coffee after bundling up.
- Artur (6/5): - früstück nicht gut
- Dr-Ing-Dchen (8/5): Central location - First time stayed at this hotel. Room was small, but sufficient for me. It is a little dated, but then it is an old hotel building. The bed slept just fine, and while the room didn't have a great view, I was really there only to sleep. The big attraction to me was the central location...just a few steps from the Marktplatz and access to the bus and strassenbahn stops. I'll stay there again.
- Marek (6/5): Your average German 3-star hotel! :) - Good choice, if you need a decent place to stay overnight in Darmstadt city centre. Accessibility of WiFi varies across rooms, make sure you ask the hotel for a better room with this respect, if you need to be connected.
- GaryCummings (2/5): I could not find the place, I looked 2 hours. - I had reservations for two nights here. After arriving in Frankfurt, we drove for 2 hours trying to find the place.
I even stopped at a police station, and he said I was close to it. He said I would have to park on a street to get to it, and then take a footpath from the street to the hotel.
When he said that, I said "Okay we are not going there or staying there."
- Bigstewh (2/5): Families should avoid - Booked this Hotel six months prior to attend a wedding of a friend nearby. Requested a cot for my six month old daughter which wasn't in the room when we arrived. Queried this with reception and was told it would be sorted. Then called our room to say they only had one and it was in use. On taking a firm stance that I had to have a cot for a six month old they suggested another bed. In the end I had to suggest mattress only on floor so she couldn't fall too far. Awful that they don't read their bookings and think that a bed is suitable for a six month old. To make it worse we'd paid up front to return a night later after the wedding and still the same problem. They could easily have gone out and bought a cheap travel cot. They simply didn't care!
Hotel is also very dated and extremely hot. No air con and 38d in room. It was also closed on the Sunday we checked back in so no staff around to help.
- rheadworth (6/5): Great Location - But Rooms Need Modernisation Badly - I was staying here for a single night and chose this hotel for its location. As I was going to watch the Darmstadt v Union Berlin football game, I needed to be central to get the tram/bus to the stadium.
When I checked in the receptionist was efficient and friendly and pointed me in the direction of my room. The room itself was slightly disappointing - the bedding seemed quite old and yellowed and the general decor was dated. Saying that, the bed was comfortable and given the location, it was pretty quiet. The bathroom was good with a nice warm shower. The room was pretty clean overall.
The hotel is also a restaurant which gives a discount to guests - I didn't eat there but the traditional German dishes they served seemed pretty appetising.
If you are planning to be in your room only to sleep and want to be central - I would recommend this hotel. If you want luxury, I would look elsewhere.
- PinoC948 (8/5): A old style hotel - A nice old tavern just few meters aways from Marktplatz with resturant too.
You can find also noce resturant few steps away hovewer.
The rooms are very old (it's a old structure) in style with the place.
German style bed and the 80x80cm german pillow (I don't like them)
- Dr-Ing-Dchen (8/5): Dinner only here. - Had dinner here with business associates. Had some traditional German dishes; Graupensuppe, Odenwaelder Spatzen (schnitzel with mushroom sauce) mit Kaesespaetzle. Prices were good, the restaurant was nice atmosphere, and of course the bier good too. Overall, I'd come back for a good dinner here.
- wearyTravellerUk (4/5): Stuck in the 1970s - This hotel might have been ok in the 1970s but now it just looks tired. The staff are friendly and the room was cleaned well and there is a safe in the room. Good location is just about their best feature. On the other hand, the room was tiny, incredibly hot and noisy. The door leading to the annex requires the muscles of a body builder to open and it closes so sharply that it almost hits you on the butt. Although the cleaners are good, maintenance isn't great. No plug in the basin, the shower drain cover comes off during showers, horrible shower curtain that sticks to you, shower so close to the loo that the loo gets wet every time you shower. Lots of noise late at night and v early in the mornings.
The worst insult of all was the rubber sheet on the bed. I sweated through the first few nights before I realised why. The rooms are stifling and you can't open the window more than 6 inches. This was not a comfortable stay for me and I do not plan to go back.
The wireless was just frustrating. It has no password, which makes it distinctly dodgy. Every time you use it you have to check a box to agree to terms that are displayed only in German. It refused to let me connect to my VPN. Unacceptable in 2014. When I did use it in desperation it would slow down and stop working intermittently. Finally, the key has a huge key ring on it and you are told to take it with you when you go out. Doesn't fit into pockets very easily.
I travel on business and I just don't need to have these kinds of hassles.
- SharringTain (6/5): Too hot to handle - Spotlessly clean but, with high outside temperatures, the room was unbearably hot. Regardless of windows kept open or shut, the room never cooled down and I ended up having cold showers throughout most nights. Outside noise, from diners below, at night made it hard to sleep. This quietened down most night after about 11.30, but much later on weekends. The corridor and stairs leading up to the room smelled strongly of cigarettes smoke. I would not stay in the annex again. Perhaps rooms in the main building were better situated. On the plus side, staff are very efficient and extremely friendly. The food in the restaurant is delicious and I loved the ambience of the terrace, where I dined. Nice hotel, though.
- bravot488 (6/5): Quant and charming, shame about the cockroach - Had an interesting 2 night stay here.
The gentleman on reception/waiter/safe cracker was great to talk and had lots of local knowledge about the town. He answered any questions we had, a funny and charming man.
The food in the restaurant was outstanding with perfectly cooked steaks.
The accommodation was unfortunately abysmal. Rotting furniture and a cockroach in the shower!
Oddly we rather enjoyed our stay and this hotel does have a lot of character and history.
Give it a try, even if only for the restaurant...
- AndrewM702 (4/5): I stayed for 5 days.....mistake! - Undoubtably the restaurant has old fashioned character. However the room I was given in the hotel was like stepping back 30 years...... The proverbial " not big enough to swing a cat" - spotlessly clean but shower (accessed by stepping over the wc) was broken and had a horrible old plastic curtain that stuck to you as soon as you turned the water on. WiFi didn't work. Sink plug didn't fit etc.....
Food in restaurant was good and appropriately priced but there are much better eateries close by.
Was over charged on one of my bills and when I pointed it out ithe waiter ( who I had tipped well) was a bit put out... The guy on reception was great and is their best asset!
Very nice garden!!
- Innelein (8/5): Basic hotel in the center - It's quite basic and absolutely not cheap hotel in the center of Darmstadt, near the market square. Furniture isn't new but it's clean and still ok for having stay there for a couple of nights.
There is also a restaurant downstairs, the oldest in town. As for me not tasty at all.
