Guest Reviews
- Nurmasniza (10/5): - Clean room. Good onsen
- Oliver (10/5): - Lovely old ryokan in the heart of nara. Housemaster was very kind and room had everything you needed. The little bath house was amazingly clean and well kept for such a small place. Would highly recommend for anyone wanting to visit nara who wants an authentic japanese experience
- Pavishan (10/5): - Staff was able to check me in at 1 am when i got re routed on the train! Very helpful very kind
- Mathew (10/5): - The traditional room was remarkable. I love the floor sleeping. The place has a nice public onsen. If you are into manga the owner has a huge collection to check out. Also there is a massage chair in the lobby that I recommend for after your bath. This place is tucked back off of the main road so it is quiet. I highly recommend this for a night or multi night stay if available.
- Natascha (10/5): - I enjoyed my stay here. I stayed for 3 nights. I liked the tatami mats, my room and I slept very good on the futon. It was my first ryokan to stay, but it was a nice experience and I would come again. Right im front is a strawberry store I can recommend!
- Gregory (10/5): Awesome - Great traditional experience for my stay!!!!!!!
- Ronnie (8/5): - Really good for a stay in Nara on a budget. Came with their own onsen which was a nice surprise! Staff very friendly and helpful and lots of games & services on offer
- Andrei (10/5): - Hotel is close to main attractions in Nara as well as to train and bus stations. Very helpful personal at the reception.
- Verified traveler (8/5):
- Jason (8/5): - The ryokan is very convenient, it is close to Nara park and railway station. Staff is friendly and helpful, the hot tub is a huge plus although you may need to learn the manner of using it beforehand and it's a bit small, the capacity is 2 persons.
However there is no passenger lift available, if you hate stairs you may need to reconsider.
- Tyrel (10/5): - It was really nice for the price and nice area. 10 min walk to subway station.
- Hector (10/5): - Awesome
- Ma Daisy (10/5): - we like everything but the a/c. a/c is not quite cool as u expect from a regular hotel where u can adjust the temperature to your liking. i inform the front desk and he checked it out. unfortunately, 16 C is the coolest it can be. coming here on a summer getaway is not fun to have a “fan cold” room where outside is a 100 F. the front desk dude speqks english whick is q plus.
- Alexey (10/5): - The building is a bit old, but nice.
- Ferenc (10/5): - A relaxed place without the usual formalities. A great hall, themed around manga and samurais, lots of board games and many classic mangas to read (Dragonball, Death note etc., complete series).
- Rachel (10/5): - The staff were really accommodating. Foreigner friendly. The rooms were as expected and really nice.
- Gerald (8/5): - Very friendly guests with english speaking staff. Front counter allowed us to store our luggages and accomodated our requests
Im going to miss Ryokan Hakuhou
- Naoko (10/5): - Nice and cozy and just a short walk from the deer park. 10/10 recommend
- Oded (6/5): - The place was very good location but not so nice
- Verified traveler (6/5): Overpriced and impersonal - This ryokan has the basics you would need, but the price is high and The owners appear to be a family so they must be busy, but there is no warmth about the service.
- David (8/5): Tatami room guest house in Nara - Great location in Nara. Tatami room with futons and private toilet. Shower and sento (soaking bath) downstairs. The guest house is halfway between a ryokan andlow cost hotel. Old and a little shabby, but very inexpensive for area.Easy walk to train stations and todaiji temple.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Centrally located hotel - Ryokan Hakuhou is in a great location. It’s close the station, local restaurants and shopping. The hotel is clean, and the rooms are comfortable. The staff is very helpful. The WiFi is ok, it was better in the lobby than on the 3rd floor. Overall a good hotel, I would stay again.
- David (8/5): Basic but comfortable ryokan in a great location - A basic but comfortable ryokan in a great location - right in the heart of Nara. Reasonable price. Front lobby reception was friendly and efficient with a nice sitting and reading area. No restaurant but lots of places nearby. We had a spacious and spotless 10 tatami room with en suite bath and toilet so never did use the communal bath. Room had no chairs - just cushions and the futon so eating in room was a bit uncomfortable. Overall I was pleased with our stay and would probably stay there again.
- Kylie (10/5): Do try it! - Traditional ryokan. We had our own toilet, but you use a shared shower/onsen. Great little sitting area. And a magical massage chair!
- Sabrina (10/5): - Host and staff were very polite and helpful. Location near Deer park and walkable to both train stations.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - We opted for 2 twin beds and it was amazing. We had a separate balcony and separate dining area. They gave us welcome gifts and hot tea. The beds were soft which was a pleasant change from the business hotels. It had a private women bath separate from the male bath.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - It’s a Japanese guest house. The futtons were not as comfortable as we had on other locations. The air conditioning was noisy. The overall experience was not good.
- Duk (6/5): Good onsen bath and overall ok. - Overall ok for old ryokan. Excellent onsen bath, though. No sitting chairs in the room. Close to stores, shopping, and Nara park.
- Anonymous (8/5): - Nice ryokan in the centre, near sights but only 10 mins from the station
- Veronique (10/5): - Very nice experience of ryokan in a beautiful little city with incredible temples
- Verified traveler (8/5): Convenient, clean and authentic Japanese family rer - This is an excellent experience for the busy traveller.
- Hoi (8/5): - I am not used to sit on the floor for a long time. The tv in the room was very old style.
- gcincinnati (8/5): Traditional Room right in the middle of the action - Our party of five adults stayed in one traditional room at Hakuhou for one night.
The room was clean and large enough to hold all of us, with a private bathroom. Sadly, we didn't get an amazing view and upon seeing other rooms, maybe ours wasn't as fancy... but it comfortably fit 5 people on 5 futons, and that was really all that mattered.
We spent our day out in Nara and had a great time, and only came back to the room when it was time to sleep. We used the baths downstairs, which were excellent, albeit a bit small (maybe only 3 people would WANT to be in the bath at the same time).
The hotel provided Yukata for us to wear and tea and a kettle in our room, so we were happy. And the bath water made my skin really smooth.
In the morning, we left our bags with the front desk and went out for more exploration (and breakfast) before heading back to Kyoto.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Decent - Very well situated, pleasant, convenient stay
- Karen & Ricardo (10/5): Perfect location - Great hotel. Close to shops, restaurants and Nara Park. Very clean accommodation and helpful staff. Would stay here again!
- Verified traveler (8/5): Great location and bath! - This is a decent ryokan a close walk to the Kintetsu station and Nara koen, near tons of restaurants.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Genuine Ryokan - Beautiful stone onsen, with wonderful staff. Suggest arriving early to enjoy the space, and not too late as the staff is not always present.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Nice family friendly place to stay in Nara - This was a great little place to stay. It is quiet and in a nice area with many close by shops and restaurants. It is also close to Nara Park and the railroad stations.
We chose the traditional tatami mat family room with the private bath. It was a nice big room with plenty of space for 5 people (4 adults and 1 child) and all our luggage.
There are two "bath houses" for both men and women downstairs in the main lobby area. My husband loved going down and sitting in the "hot tub" after walking all day. We also loved the massage chair in the main lobby too after sleeping on the tatami mats.
Overall a nice, quiet, clean, family friendly place to stay.
- Ellis (4/5): Altogether disappointing. - I wish I could rate this higher, because the owners were quite nice. But this was not a ryokan. It was a short-term boarding house. We stayed in a ten tatami mat room, which had a low table, and a "cubicle" bathroom - a plastic encased tiny room, with a toilet and a bathtub. Similarly, it advertised an "onset" - it was a very small, musty communal bath. The place was dingy - clean enough. But for $182, ridiculous. For $60, it would have been quite fine. But not priced as a luxury inn.
- Chris (10/5): Very nice ryokan in the center of Nara - We stayed one night in a japanese style room with private bathroom, which i found large with respect to japanese standards. The staff was very helpful and very nice. They made a reservation for us at a restaurent in Kobe where we were going the next day and told us all about the lantern festival that was happening. The ryokan is also very well situated between the train station and the Nara-koen park. I found its public paths very relaxing and very well decorated. I would recommend this establishment to anyone who was looking for a ryokan in Nara.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Great location but expensive for Saturday night - Location fantastic - close to JR station and easy walking to the park. Room was very clean. Futon very thin and needed extra padding from duvet in cupboard. Ensuite toilet but communal bathroom downstairs. We found this stay very expensive for what we got.
- Michelle (8/5): In a good location and staff friendly. - The hotel is in central location - walk to Deer Park etc. Nara is a beautiful place, one of my favourites in Japan. The hotel is old but the room was clean and Japanese style bath was really clean and enjoyable. The man running the place was also very friendly.
- Genjidog (8/5): Quiet, low-priced ryokan - Located almost exactly halfway between Nara Station and Nara Park just off a main street. Our tatami room was small but clean and pleasant. Toilets and sinks are down the hall. The futon were a little thinner than I like. The baths downstairs are only available in the evenings (typical of Japan) and are really nice. Wear the robe supplied in your room and be prepared to meet your fellow guests in the bath. Do make sure you know and follow Japanese bath etiquette. The ryokan is family-run; they were very nice to deal with, but I'm not sure how good their English is; I dealt with them entirely in Japanese. My husband particularly loved the massage chair in the lobby; it felt wonderful after a long day of sightseeing. Because the ryokan is so central, shopping and restaurants are an easy walk away.
- Frank (6/5): cheap - It was fairly cheap. You get what you pay for.
I was charged extra at the desk because my child was 14 years old .... according to the staff, a "child" is 12 years old ~ not according to the reservation site where I made the reservations. The real bummer is that I was charged an extra 2,000 yen when I checked in because of this minor discrepancy. I suspect that the clerk must have felt guilty in the end, however, because he upgraded our room and gave us a room with a private bath. My "child" appreciated that.
- Ozyogini (6/5): Go traditional room! - After reading TripAdvisor reviews about the mattresses in traditional rooms being thin and too short for westerners, thought it best to book a modern bed. The room however was the size of a child's bedroom with a double bed in it so two people packing simultaneously (or doing anything other than lie on the bed) was near impossible. I have travelled in Japan and know how small rooms can be - so shrugged it off. However what really lost points was that we were woken 4:40am with sunlight streaming through the thin yellow curtains and had a very restless sleep - was one of the only days on our trip we could sleep in until 8am, so disappointed to say the least.
On our way out we saw some open doors of the traditional rooms - some were ones with toilet, some without, but they were super spacious! Gorgeous little tables and cushions and a lovely feel compared with ours - would totally do this instead if I had the choice next time. Besides, the western beds in Japan are firm anyway (which we like) - you may as well sleep on a futon. PLUS other rooms were all darkened as they had dark green curtains - so looks like we got unlucky with the sheer yellow! So don't avoid this place as it could be fair for the price, just be aware of what you book and even make special request of darker curtains if you like your sleep!
No one to greet us on desk when we arrived mid afternoon the day before, were about to leave our bags and a note on them next to other baggage in common area when a young man came out (10mins later) looking a little rushed and apologetic. He was very nice though. Also no goodbyes in the morning - just a key drop, so you get what you pay for.
Massage chair wonderful, onsen pleasant, no problems sharing toilets at all and while a little walk from JR station (we only noticed because it was raining on departure!) it was in a very good location.
Think I just felt gipped because traditional rooms so much better than our shoebox! But that was my choice - you make a better one! Enjoy Nara.
- Verified traveler (8/5): GREAT Family Run Ryokan! - Perfect location for walking, shopping and restaurants. Family run business provides that almost at home feel with all the professional touches.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Too old for sleeping on the futon, l found, and no seating. However, it is a ryokan!
- Leslie (8/5): Pleasant overnight stay, great location - We had a great overnight stay in Nara at the Ryokan Hakuhou. Our room was traditional but with a western toilet. The floor was tatami covered. There was a low table and floor chairs, yukatas and slippers. It was very neat, clean, spacious and quiet. Our only complaint was that the futons were very thin indeed and, being older, we were not yet accustomed to sleeping on the floor. We did not sleep comfortably. Otherwise, the ryokan was great. Inbetween the train station and Nara Park, it was a quick and easy walk to both. Our host at the ryokan was also pleasant and helpful.
- Andy (6/5): Hotel in downtown Nara - OK hotel on one of Nara's main streets. Handy for restaurants, tourist spots and about 500m from JR Nara station.
Not sure why it's a 'ryokan' - did not provide any meals, and only basic spa baths.
Room was ok but quite small. Shared bathroom facilities, not private.
- timothyn547 (8/5): Basic, but everything you need. - If you don't mind the communal showers and the basic room, this place is ideal. It is in a fantastic location that is central to the sights of Nara - everything is in walking distance. The room was clean and the staff very friendly and accommodating. There is an amazing massage chair that will give you a 15-minute extravaganza of a massage for free and it will be like the power of a thousand hands on you.
It was our first ryokan experience and I get the impression that is was basic, but not overpriced for what we got.
I recommend this place if you want a simple room in which you don't intend to spend all that much time.
- gregoryb461 (10/5): Gorgeous traditional room and beautiful onsen. - My wife and I spent our night in Nara in this refined guest house. The helpful staff spoke both English and Japanese. The traditional tatami had a lovely straw scent that didn't bother my nose at all (I have hayfever, so I was worried about this) and the traditional onsen soaked the pain off of my tour-sore feet.
If I visit Nara again, Hakuhou is on the short list.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Nice Ryoken - Basic Ryoken. Friendly staff and close to the train station and center of town.
- Kevin (8/5): Nara in Cherry Blossom season - Located very close to Nara JR station and main visitor sites the ryokan was very good place to stay for our two nights in Nara. The staff were very good and the hotel was very popular wth Japanese and foreigners alike. The only down side was the intermittent wifi when planning our next day.
- Greg (8/5): Very nice ryokan - First of all, if you never slept on the floor or have back problems, think again about going to any ryokan...
This one is amazing! Awesome staff, great communal bath and the room are the size advertised (and slightly snell of cabbage due to the tatamis but it's ok)
If you can, put some extra layers under/on the mattress. It helps a lot to sleep better!
- Verified traveler (8/5): Nara hotel - Great hotel but expensive.
- David (10/5): Great location for family of four - Nice place for family of four to stay. Great location. Traditional Japanese sleeping on floor. Small but good bathroom. Able to leave luggage before and after check-in. Would certainly stay here again
- SueH506 (8/5): Location was perfect - Stayed here for four nights and it was our first Ryokan experience. This Ryokan is priced accordingly by comparison to others, so basically ..you get what you pay for!
There were many pros - The Onsen experience was one of them, particularly as it's difficult to find and Onsen that will allow you in with tattoos. I was discreet and had no problem, nor did my hubby. The massage chair was unbelievable, so needed after all our travelling! The staff .. Polite and unobtrusive. Location - Perfect, close to everything. No curfew
Only one Con - Futons very thin.. Sore backs
- caribu75 (8/5): One night in Japanese room - Our family of 4 with 2 kids have spent one night at this guesthouse in a large Japanese room with tatami. Was absolutely fine and very well located for dining and getting to the station in the morning
We did not try the Onsen buy looked clean
Recommended if you want to spend one night in Nara
- Verified traveler (8/5): nice little ryokan, good location - the ryokan is located conveniently to the JR and Keihan Rail stations. It was walking distance to all the sights we wanted to visit. The rooms were decent sized (we had 5 people) and very clean. I would recommend it :)
- Xiaojing (8/5): Great stay - We enjoyed our stay. Walking distance to Nara Park. Surrounding area is great for sightseeing, shopping and dining.
- Suzanne (10/5): Nice stay at Ryokan Hakuhou - It was a nice experience to stay in a ryokan. There were 4 of us, so we had a room for 5 with private bath. The staff was courteous and we had no language problem. The hotel and room were clean. I had our luggage shipped from Kyoto and they had already been put into our room when we checked in. I was worried about how to get our luggage down from our 3rd floor room without an elevator, but it turned out there was a luggage elevator across from our room.
Ryokan Hakuhou was about 5-6 minutes away from the Kintetsu-Nara railway station. Next to the railway station and on the hotel street there were many shops and restaurants. We walked to Nara Park, visited the sites, came back, shopped and ate.The next morning, we rolled our luggage to the bus stop across from the railway station for a ride to the Kansai airport. It was quite easy. We would stay at Ryokan Hakuhou again if we ever go back to Nara.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Enjoyable and comfortable stay with daily hot spring water soak.
- Richard (8/5): Convenient and spacious room, but pricey. - Room was a traditional Japanese room with tatami flooring, futon beds, and a low table. The hotel also had a small hot spring bath, but I didn't get to use it. Price was really high, but I unfortunately went during tourist season, and the hotel is located in a very popular main street.
- Traci (10/5): The Highlight of Our Trip - This was the highlight of our trip. Micki, the host, was so warm and considerate. He made us feel very welcomed. He showed us how to wear yukata, pointed out the top onsens, and made excellent recommendations for nearby restaurants. He even drove us and another guest to the Sea of Japan coast for a couple of hours of sightseeing. It was incredibly generous and spectacular. Our room was beautiful and comfortable, and even had a small sitting area overlooking the river. We felt incredibly lucky to stay at such a beautiful place with such a kind host.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Solid wifi, central location within nara
- DebbieY541 (6/5): Excellent Location, Basic Accommodation - It was a friendly place with great front desk staff. The public bath was clean & relaxing. The location was perfect; only a 5-10 min walk to both the JR and Kintetsu stations and Nara Park. The only down-sides for us were that the futons were very small and not soft, so it seemed like you were sleeping directly on the tatami and if you are taller than 170cm, your feet will hang off the end. Also, the towels, robes, and corridors all smelled of smoke, even though all rooms are supposed to be "non-smoking".
Otherwise, the price is good for the location, so I would recommend it.
- Marc (4/5): - Nice location, but general condition of the ryokan was rather poor ... needs updates !
- J (6/5): Convenient location - Ryokan Hakuhou is in a reasonably priced option in a convenient location for exploring the top tourist locations in Nara. We stayed on the "modern" floor which are nice tatami rooms with an attached room with toilet and basin. The ryokan has the traditional men's and women's baths on the first floor. The only real drawback is the lack of sound insulation which makes it impossible to sleep in in the mornings.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Convenient location and nice room - This was my favourite hotel during my stay in Japan. The room was clean and not as small as I was expecting. Sleeping on a tatami felt great. The hotel staff was nice and helpful. At the beginning I was hesitant to use the common bathroom, but there weren't many people in the bathroom and the onsen was surprisingly not too small.
- sama (10/5): - Excellent Ryokan, even had a massage chair in the lobby!
- Jeff (10/5): Great Location and Price - For the money, this was the best place we stayed. We spent 3 weeks traveling around Japan. This Room was the least expensive of all our rooms. However, the room was clean and we had the toilet and sink in our room option. That in room bath was modern, new and clean. Even the common bath and showers exceeded our expectations. The smaller ones provided a lock on the doors for privacy and the larger one was wonderful and always empty. The location was a short walk from the train station on the main pedestrian way. It was another short walk from the guesthouse to the main park and temple on the same pedestrian walk.
- Verified traveler (4/5): ratio quality price not really good - Really expensive room for what we got. We slept in ryokan for half this price and service was muxh higher quality. Bathroom was not clean..
- Verified traveler (8/5): Great location, nice staff, slightly run down - This is a somewhat shabby guesthouse with a very friendly staff and a fantastic location. It's overpriced considering it's condition, but what you're really getting is a clean, reliable room within walking distance of both train stations and all the fun stuff in Nara Park. If you're headed to the Nara area for tourism and don't anticipate spending much time in your room, this is a solid choice.
Just bear in mind that not all the rooms have their own bathroom, and there's a weird smell in the the third floor hallway.
- W2090UGsusanw (8/5): Comfortable, great location - This small traditional Japanese hotel is located in the middle of the quaint shopping district, with restaurants all over. Thus there were no meals served. I had the "inner" room, which was a huge room in the back. I did not get the futon experience, since there were two twin beds in my room, but I had a couch, table, microwave, fridge and counter. There is an onsen (hot springs group bath) which is most enjoyable, and the bath/shower combination off my bedroom was very small. I gather that other rooms did have the traditional futon arrangement, some of them with shared baths, and thus those were more economical than my room. Wifi was free and good. Location is perfect, between the two train stations and the park.
- Richard (8/5): Great first experience in a traditional ryokan - Great location not far from Nara station (about 5 mins walk). This was our first time staying in a ryokan...we are a family of five and it was a good sized room that just fitted our futons and suitcases, when the beds were laid out. Staff are very friendly and speak English. A washing machine is available which was very handy. We are not used to traditional Japanese pillows but the ones here were pretty lumpy. If you are looking for reasonably priced accommodation for a family this is a good ryokan.
- Veronique (8/5): Great location - The ryokan is only a short walk from the station and all the temples. The room was big enough for the 4 of us and very quiet. The public bath is little but then it was only my daughter and I using it. Sadly there's no breakfast at the ryokan but a good cafe down the road from it. Good value for money, well worth using to discover beautiful Nara.

- Verified traveler (8/5): - I had a wonderful experience in Nara. This hotel is very close to two main rail stations and walking distance to Todaiji's Daibutsuden, shopping, and other attractions. There is a takoyaki restaurant right outside the hotel called Ichigo Ichie, Echo. I hung out there a bit and regulars would stop by and chat, this was a lot of fun. The cook and the neighbors are lovely. The hotel staff was extremely kind and welcoming, Hotel was clean, nevertheless, it is an old hotel so keep that in mind. My room smelled like boiled plantain leaves - not a horrible smell, just there.
- Bowie (8/5): Everything Nice! - Nice location, cleanness, and nice staff speaking in English, one concern is you need to share the public bath instead of the private bath in the room, but it's Japanese style worth to try!
P.S. no escalator.
- WesternEastern (8/5): Mostly great, central, clean, easy to get to. - Almost everything was great. The only problems we had were that our room smelled cigarette smoky, we may have been booked into a smoking room by accident, I don't know.
- Bryan (8/5): Top Location - Can't beat it for value and location. Only negative for some people could be communal bathing/shower.
- Doug (10/5): Nice Onsen - The town was recommended by a friend. My girlfriend picked out the hotel. We slept on tami mats in a huge room with river views. The room had its own hotspring bath.
- Teresa (8/5): Nicely authentic and great location! - Very enjoyed the Ryokan experience here. Shower/bath was very nice. The rooms were extremely clean. Well kept. Bathrooms/toilets appeared to be brand new. It was a very short walk from the train station. Although there was no elevator, there was a lift for baggage which was very helpful.
- Nikos (8/5): Very well located, nice ryokan - Simple ryokan, a bit pricey for what it was, but good all around. The staff was very nice and accommodating. The room was big and comfortable. Excellent location!
- rewaka (8/5): Low-end ryokan with excellent location - The Japanese-style hotel is located conveniently between JR Nara and Kintetsu Nara stations on Sanjo-Dori, where you find shops, restaurants and Nara's main attractions within easy walking distance.
The lodging itself is a typical low-end Japanese ryokan, where guests sleep on futons lay out on the tatami floor. The futons were clean and comfortable, and we had good night sleeps. It also has public Japanese baths for men and women. Some rooms do not have a private toilet, and public toilet facilities are available.
We visited in mid-April between the cherry-blossom season and golden week, and the place was fairly quiet. It served as an excellent base for our explorations in the Nara region.
- Wei (6/5): A good location for exploring Nara. - The hotel is in a good location to explore Nara. The tatami room is large enough for 4 people. The condition is moderate.
- roger (8/5): Good enough. - This ryokan is reasonable, the host is friendly and helpful, the room smelt a bit of green tea and futon and bean bag pillows aren't the most comfortable bedding for westerners but we slept OK.
Location is good - easy walk from station and right in town. Nice bathhouse.
- Peter (4/5): A bit dated hotel but near Nara attractions - We had a one night stay and were glad as the room was not very clean. We considered the cost to be too high for the room/experience.
