Guest Reviews
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Very clean and neat room
- Ching997 (8/5): Centrally located with duty free shops around - This motel is quite modern with lots of duty free shops around. The room is quite clean but basic, they just provide two small soap bars. There is also a free drinking water machine at the entrance of first floor. There is a Chinese restaurant around the corner. They sell hawker’s foods in the morning, and at night you can get have dinner here. The foods are quite nice with reasonable price.
- maciejbosak (8/5): You get what you pay for... - The Sunderlan Motel is located in the center of Kuah, surrounded by numerous duty free stores and seafood restaurants.
The rooms are small but realatively clean and neat. Aircon, TV and wifi are working well.
The motel is located half an hour drive from the airport and few minutes drive from Eagle Square.
Fair offer for a budget tourist, starting with 65 ringgits (April 2017).
- Silvia (6/5): Not bad, depending on what you're looking for :) - The Motel is nothing special... but totally ok.
We stayed just one night before taking a flight.
Around the Motel there is nothing but shops, supermarkets and restaurant.... it's not a beautiful area, but very good if you have to buy some stuff... especially chocolate and sweets :)
- Verified traveler (6/5): - โอเคดีครับ ราคาถูก ถ้าไม่เรื่องมากและเช่ารถแล้ว แนะนำที่นี่ได้เช่นกัน
- neil602015 (6/5): Kuah city, sunderland motel - On arrival at Langkawi airport take the only option taxi to kuah about 25 minutes and 30 ringgits £5-50p.the sunderland motel itself is a budget hotel at just at £12 a night the room was surprisingly good for the money and the staff was very helpful.with many duty free shops and restaurants close at hand, kuah itself is not good with many rundown buildings and no beaches to attract you, i was very disappointed with kuah and would nor brother going there again.I've taken a few photos that make it look nice.
- Verified traveler (2/5): Good room but pathetic wifi (NO Internet)! - Wifi doesn't work! Even email doesn't open. And the staff does not care a bit about it. They just say it is like this, can't do anything. Then please remove Wifi from your online listing if you can't do anything!!
Also, the first room they gave me had an issue in the toilet - the commode was leaking!! Can you imagine!!! Upon raising the issue, I was offered another room.
- xtreemadventure (2/5): Horrible Rooms - We checked as a family for a RM120 room. Mosquitos were abundance so I went to buy a insect repellant in a nearby shop. I told Mom & Kids to have their early dinner & I sprayed the room well & left. We came back 45 minutes later...there are dead cockroaches on the bed. A dead lizard near the window floor. And guess what...we tolerated cause we were tired & just wanted to have a pleasant sleep.
The next day I got a call from Front Desk at 12.04 noon & was asked if the stay is gonna be extend for another day. I replied NO & mentioned that I have to leave immediately or pay every RM10 for every hour starting from 12.00 noon!!!
I remained cool & told the front desk girl that I just woke up & needed 10 minutes to get the kids done..she said take your time & pay the RM10 as you check out.
Thanks Sunderland Hotel of Kuah... you are definately NOT Gonna get any good remarks in the near future.
- Verified traveler (4/5): God staff, dirty room. - Two friends and I stayed two nights here. While the staff seemed very friendly the room was gross. Ants everywhere, dirty sheets and loads of toothpaste caked on the sink. We would have cancelled the second night but we payed online and couldn't get a refund.
- Juice85lts (8/5): Great sleep - The rooms we're rather comfy good size, but the sheets and towels were stained and had burns in them. The hotel need a bit of a dust but for a budget motel, I had a great night sleep.
- KatieKateM (4/5): Only if you have to be in Kuah - The Good: affordable, close to night markets, close to duty free shopping, close-ish to pier (long walk or short taxi),
The Bad: horrible unhelpful non English speaking staff, very hard bed, bad tv reception, smelly bathroom, intermittent bad wifi (especially in evenings when everyone is back).
One night in Kuah it's acceptable.
- Dimsi85 (6/5): Perfect Location for Duty Free Shopping - You get value for money on your room. However as mentioned by the other reviewers they wouldn't clean your room during the stay. I stayed 3 nights & fortunately for me the room key failed to ignite electricity supply on the second night so they gave me a new room.
Biggest disappointment is the attitude/ability of the hotel staff to help you on any other request. In my case I wanted to arrange a taxi to Kuah Jetty early morning (6.45AM) as I had to catch the first ferry to Perlis so approached the front desk to help me arrange a taxi as I noticed although the taxi stand is just next door there are hardly any taxis at the stand during that time ( I checked previous morning). Staff maintained they cannot arrange a taxi & asked me to go to the stand in the morning.
In the morning as I predicted there was no taxis in the stand I had to pull my luggage & go to My Hotel which is 500m away and request the front desk & thank god they had 24 taxi service.

- Varun (2/5): Smelly Motel with no cleaning provided in rooms - Do not visit this Motel. Worst experience ever.
Smelly corridors due to rotting garbage in rooms. No cleaning services provided during stay (4 nights)
- Muhammed (6/5): Good - Due to renovation at the time of my stay the wi ri worked only at the reception are not in the rooms
- Don0011 (10/5): Perfect for a good Nigth sleep - Lovely room and freshly made to give you a good night sleep. Would repeat it again. Nice. There is only one issue I found. There was not parking at site. But around the hotel there are free parking. Apart from that it's a lovely place to stay and I will defiantly repeat staying there again
- CaptNaz007 (6/5): Ok for budget traveller - Booked by Hotels.com by my travel partner. Room photos at the OTA nice but when come into the room, Oh My God. Is it for real? Far from Cenang Beach but near to Dataran Lang & Taman Lagenda Langkawi. TV channel was so not good. Double image. WIFI sucks and super slow. Good thing about this motel is its surrounding area. Surround by night market, chocolate shops & HIG mall. Restaurant nearby suitable for Chinese people.
- KellyTeoh101 (8/5): Comfortable, cheap and strategic location - Booking made online. The room wasn't ready yet when we arrived for check-in. Have to wait for a while but there is a convenient store next to the motel so its not so frustrating for me as I went there looking around the duty-free goodies. Location is great as there is just coffeeshop around the corner and its in the center of the town. Easy car renting and night market happens to be just outside the motel. Satisfied with the room. Nothing much to complain beside having to wait for the room to get ready.
- johncU9528RP (10/5): Top Recommend - Top recommended for all of you about the price, and the very nice room.
But unfortunately, it took 20-30 mins to Cenang Beach.
Kuah, is a town full of shopping haven..
In front of this Hotel, you may find a lot of stall selling foods and clothes / accessories at night
- ai lian (6/5): Average with no windows - Budget hotel, was okay for an overnight stay waiting for the ferry
- Verified traveler (6/5): good - the internet connection was good.
No breakfast,,, downpoint!
- 135margareta (4/5): Worst Ever - Booking was being reconfirm. Upon arrival room was not available. Yet the requested to paid more for different categories of rooms. Waited for few hours they manage to solve the problems. Small matter make the stay terrible.
- Sajutp (6/5): Good choice for the price - Location is alright, but get a rental. Got a car as cheap as 50rm per day. A night market will open right in the next street three days a week. Could feel the spring through the mattress. Air-conditioning, shower works fine. WiFi accessible only at times from the room. Staff could be a bit more helpful.
- Hyunjoo (8/5): Emmm - Pretty good
- Teh (6/5): Affordable & nice location - Price is the most attractive factor to choose this motel. The location is great as it is situated in Kuah town whereby there are lots of amenities nearby. The service is also great, but the room is just a normal room. The room is basic, aircon is not freezing (no issue for me), toilet is a bit smelly but it is clean (weird), hot shower is ok, soundproof is the main issue to me as i can hear people walking & talking along the corridor. This motel is highly recommended for budget travellers.
- nazatie (4/5): Motel near the town - Difficult to park the car because every night there is a night market in front of the motel . No holder of a bathroom inside and hard to open . Slow reaction time in tell and no action .
- ramesh (10/5): Budget hotel - we stayed in budget room 58 RM per day, its cheap and neat , worth more than 58 RM
- Verified traveler (2/5): Room was so bad I decided to go anonymous... - Room was too small and very very very basic. Bed and pillow in very bad condition. Bathroom smell like some toxic gas. WiFi unstable.
- TinTinTin (4/5): Budget Hotel - All was OK except for the mattress.
The motel occupies the whole of the upper floor of a row of shoplot. We had windowless a twin room and it is typical of any budget hotels in Malaysia.
Small room but sufficient for 2 persons plus luggages. Shower is hot with good water pressure. Air conditioning system worked well and there's only 2 local channels on the TV. The WiFi wasn't working when we were there.
There's a hot/cold water dispenser in the stairs landing area though there is no elevator. The staircase is fairly wide so there shouldn't be any problem lugging the baggages up. Also, its only 1 floor. No breakfast provided but there are many eateries around Kuah Town. Location is good in the center of Kuah Town with ample parking for cars/bikes by the roadside.
The room is clean but there is no cleaing service on the 2nd day we were there. We booked a 2 night's stay in the motel.
It was a quiet night for us on both nights. There's no carpet on the whole of the motel, so it would be very noisy if you have people walking up and down and talking. We were lucky we didnt experience this while we were there.
The only gripe I had with the hotel is the mattress. It is extremely worn off and hard. I can feel the spring as I sat down on the bed. Forget about sleeping on your sides as the spring will poke your hips and shoulder. It is not even possible to kneel down on the bed as my knees hurt so much.
- Verified traveler (6/5): value of money - everything good.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Located away from tourist spots. - Located away from tourist spots, near night market .
- J (6/5): nice location but bad room condition - nice location but bad room condition, mattress were all spoilt and sleeping on spring.
- dsuraya (4/5): great location for shopping - the mattress hard like plywood timber and the electricity will stop about 11.30 am...
- FaisalCTG (8/5): Cheap clean and spacious - We 5 stayed in 2 rooms with 3+2 Bed. This is near the beach and the room are neat & clean. Stuffs are so good for service in any time and friendly. they supplied minimum amenities. Rooms were large and spacious. WiFi is bothering for the first time connectivity and then after its nice with speed. No Breakfast. Good for family, friends, single staying.
- Hiijaz (10/5): Cheap and clean. - We took the windowless triple bed room at RM80. It was OK as the bed were large, as they are combined, you could comfortable sleep 4-5 if you want to. The motel is new hence it feels upmarket with freshly painted walls and simple design. The motel is also near in a good location, near several near duty free shops and restaurants and a night market but still quiet compared to bustling Cenang. Staff were also helpful and friendly.
The only downside is the bathroom where the hose near the toilet bowl leaked and made the bathroom very wet. The walls are pretty thin and you can hear the next door watching TV late at night,if they don't its OK. Minor issues.
Overall a comfortable place and cheap place if you are out most of the time.
- 624edwardw (10/5): Holtel food & drink - Rm120 for a 4 nights stay in a bedroom of 3. No breakfast. But the room was okay. Our room was not made up on the 2nd day and the shower head was broken. Call them twice and only fixed it on the 3rd day. I got a feeling that the housekeeping staff did not make up the room intentionally as both of rooms were not cleaned and...
Stayed at this motel for 3 nights. Overall it was a nice stay, except for some minor gripes such as the broken bathroom door knob. - Y2079 (6/5): Budget Quality - Rm120 for a 4 nights stay in a bedroom of 3. No breakfast. But the room was okay. Our room was not made up on the 2nd day and the shower head was broken. Call them twice and only fixed it on the 3rd day. I got a feeling that the housekeeping staff did not make up the room intentionally as both of rooms were not cleaned and I read the same review on this as well. Our rooms had no windows as you need to pay additional Rm50 per night for that.
- THChan93 (6/5): Decent budget quality - Stayed at this motel for 3 nights. Overall it was a nice stay, except for some minor gripes such as the broken bathroom door knob. Like what other reviewers had mentioned, there are no lifts so you have to carry your luggage upstairs to your room. If you are just looking for a cheap decent place just to sleep, this is the place for you.
- Y2079 (8/5): Budget quality - The reception is okay. No lifts, need to carry luggage to your room. I booked a triple room without window. The shower head was damaged, and the room was not made for 2 days! I read the same feedback elsewhere, suspect the staff was not doing her job as it was peak season. If you don't mind about the housekeeping, it is a budget place with reasonable price.
- MegatI (8/5): Average but okay - Sometimes you wandered into a hotel late at night and decided just then to stay, just because that's where the taxi stops. That is the case with Sunderland Motel and I. The name might bring a reminiscence of a Saloon in the Old West, but we are very much far from both the Old West and that timeline. It is actually quite nice, in an average way. The motel is located in the heart of Kuah town, literally, and above a Tax free shopping mini mall, which name escapes me at the moment.
The room are not that spacious, just enough for a king size bed, a small fixed table on the wall that barely fits my notebook and a corridor to the bathroom and the door. The bathroom is acceptable, equipped with an aging water heater with a build-in pump that is making a lot of noise. Despite having the pump, the water pressure is not that great, I probably got a room with a faulty pump.
Despite all that, the room is clean and the bed comfortable. The staff is very helpful and friendly, I had a problem with my credit card service and I was short on cash but since it was late, they still let me check in and tell me I can pay for the room the next day. Talk about service!. There's also a taxi stand literally outside the hotel and a very close access to every shopping haven in town.
I would still recommend this hotel to people, because it gives a very good service and a very good value for money.
