Guest Reviews
- Edward (10/5): Great B&B near seal colony - What a fantastic B&B! A beautiful house with amazing views of the ocean!
There was a little confusion about check-in I would recommend calling ahead the day before just to make sure they know you’re coming. However, Peter answered the call immediately and got us checked in.
The 2 outdoor kitties were adorable to watch as well.
- MikeA308 (8/5): Kaikoura stay - We booked the two en-suite rooms here for our party but unfortunately the owner, Peter, made a mistake and on the first night someone else had one of the rooms so we were given the grandchildrens' bedroom for the night. It was OK. Peter did offer a rate reduction for the night! Breakfast was self-service from a selection of juices, fruits, cereals, toast and spreads, as well as hot drinks. We had the run of a large villa and the main lounge room was large and comfortable, as well as a good deck. The second night in the en-suite was much more comfortable! Peter was helpful and easy to get along with, and arranged a booking for us for dinner on the second night at the local hotel - the Pier, which was excellent and within walking distance if you can manage a couple of kms on the flat.
- Richard (10/5): - Wonderful place so quiet and peaceful
- Scott (8/5): - We enjoyed our one night with Peter. Guests should be aware that though this is listed as a B&B the breakfast is a self service continental. Don’t expect to be served a hearty bacon and eggs. Still enjoyed our stay by the ocean.
- Megan (10/5): - A beautiful property in a great location. Very quiet, nicely decorated and a self serve breakfast was available. The gardens were stunning.
My only negative is the room could do with the removal of the spiders in the corners.
- Johanna (10/5): - Lovely and very laid back b&b in a great spot. You are treated as one of the family and the door is always unlocked.
We left a shirt in the room when we left and Sarah posted it to us without any trouble.
Can highly recommend
- Catherine (10/5): - A real treat to meet Pete and see him "work" on sheep. Nice accomodation with an amazing view!
- Mr PeterJ (10/5): - Our host was very welcoming, along with his family. Made very "at home"... good restaurants nearby.
- Pedro (10/5): - Quaint B&B in a remarkable location. The view from the B&B is simply spectacular, walking distance to the seal colony (do not miss the hike), the town is nearby with plenty of eating venues. Pete was very hospitable, and even arranged dinner reservations for us. Clean, comfortable bed. Breakfast was self-serve continental.
- Leesa (10/5): - Lovely house and owner
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great Location at The Point - Pete is a fantastic host, beautiful view from my room. Although it's a working farm, the room was spotless as is the house. Really nice spread for breakfast. Easy walk to see the Seals at The Point & equidistant to Kaikoura Seafood BBQ, as well.
- Elia (8/5): - Extra ordinary house from the nineteenth century, very warm welcome from the owner, bit far from the centre but if you have car is recommended
- julie (10/5): - Fabulous setting, wonderful old house.
- David (10/5): - Beautiful old homestead with amazing sea views and morning sun. Hens on site for eggs and sheep to watch. Comfotable bed and excellent breakfast. Good value for money. Lots to do in Kaikoura so stay at least 2 nights.
- John (8/5): - amazing location with friendly, helpful owner
- John (10/5): - Great Location on the Kaikoura Peninsula only a short walk to the seal colony.
- Tim (10/5): - Amazing views, comfortable bed, very nice shower. Authentic 130 year old farmhouse, tastefully updated.
- Joanne (8/5): - Beautiful location, very quiet and comfortable.
- Sharon (8/5): - Very nice house and host. However, we reserved the front room with the ocean view and when we arrived we were given the back room with no view.
- Lyle (10/5): - Peter, the host was very welcoming. Property really lovely.
- Sherry (8/5): - Right on the waterfront in a beautiful setting.
- Julie (10/5): - Friendly people in a great location
- Deborah (10/5): Simply Superb - Wow! Absolutely amazing stay. From the moment we arrived we were welcomed with such warming genine hospitality. Our room was just perfect and to be made to feel so welcome just topped our stay. The homely feeling and views were simply superb! Sadly reality kicked back in and we had to leave. A real piece ofstunning paradise
- Verified traveler (8/5): - I actually liked the location which offered a wonderful view of the ocean from my bedroom window. The room was small but cozy; the owner was friendly and warm. I never got the TV in the room to work properly but this was a minor concern, as I didn't visit such a beautiful town to watch TV! I slept very well, as I was able to keep my windows open at night and could hear the ocean. I would definitely stay here again!
- Anna (10/5): To the Point! - Lovely place to stay, close to shoreline and fantastic views of the Seaward Kaikouras. Super nice Peter (Pat) was our host, and made us feel very welcome. Booked restaurant for us and drove us there too. We had garden room with views of flowering roses, with characterful spacious bathroom, would recommend.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The host, Peter, was welcoming and the large house is charming with a magnificent view.
- Y1054EEchriss (10/5): Wonderful welcome - We were delighted with this friendly and comfortable b and b.The location is great - quiet with fantastic view and a seal colony a short walk away!
Our room was spacious with very comfortable bed and luxury shower room. Peter made us welcome and we were able to make tea/coffee as and when. Really generous breakfast with lovely bowl of fresh fruit - very welcome for travellers. Our whole stay spoke of kindness and generosity - a 5 star experience.
- Bryan (10/5): Relaxing stay in a comfortable farm house. - We really enjoyed our stay. Peter was very friendly and helpful. We felt at home because he made us so welcome.&
- M&M (6/5): - Location and outlook of the property was outstanding.
- Stephen CN (4/5): Marie Celeste B&B - We did not see anyone at the property apart from a brief conversation with the owner after his "day out" in Christchurch. I understand the owner was recently bereaved (6mths ago)but if you are going to run a business employ someone to deal with reception etc. Unsettling stay.
- WeisesWeib (10/5): Wonderful and quiet place in Kaikoura - We had not expected to find such a nice and quiet place in Kaikoura and therefore we were so happy to find this B&B!
There is so much room for guests and tea/coffee facility as well as the possibility to use the fridge and everything in the kitchen - very trustful and charming. We loved the terrace with this spectacular view to the sea and the wide open doors to enjoy the sea breeze while having breakfast: simply great.
Big thanks to Peter for being such a nice and friendly host - we enjoyed our short stay very much!
- Robert (10/5): - Very nice B and B in a scenic location. Staff was friendly and attentive. Very limited continental breakfast was the only negative.
- Jessica (10/5): - Such a cute B and B! Great view of the ocean rooms were clean and decorated beautifully, en-suite bathroom with soaps and towels. Beautiful house great place to stay in Kaikoura!
- MDGlenns (4/5): Unwanted Guests - First the good. The room was clean and spacious and the location not bad.
However, we got the feeling that we were unwanted guests in the property and we were very happy to leave the next morning.
The kitchen is shared with the owner, who cooks, entertains guests and leaves dirty dishes in the sink.
He wasn't present at breakfast nor did we see him before checking out.
He gave us the wrong room - we booked the room with sea views but someone else was already in this room.
We arrived during his "Sheep show" so got shown our room very quickly with little chance to gain any information about the place.
Our room was next to his bedroom and bathroom, which were both a complete mess with doors left open.
The suggestion for dinner was booked out, I would have expected local knowledge to advise us to make a booking.
We had to make our own breakfast, which was cheap supermarket quality bread and cereal (the OJ ran out as the other guests got there first).
There was no way to address these issues as he was not there!
Sink blocked in en-suite and toilet continuously ran.
Owner had TV on in bedroom, which was quite loud in our room.
We would not recommend staying here and feel there would be much better value elsewhere in Kaikoura.
- Chris (10/5): A hidden gem. - We were disappointed we had only booked one night stay. A beautiful place to stay. A small farm with farm animals and seals just across the road. Breakfast and accommodation was perfect. Could not fault. A short distance to a lovely old hotel on the beach. The hotel served excellent meals.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Nice farmhouse B&B - Nice location a little outside the town. Comfy bed, nice ensuite, and great breakfast (homemade preserves!). Nice morning views of the ocean and mountains.
- melonies159 (10/5): wish we could stay longer - Location is excellent, easy access to town and seal point. Pick your beauty; the beach, the gardens, the well-cared for sheep and old home. Comfortable, spacious clean common room, bedroom and bath. Quiet. Relaxing to sit in the garden and smell the flowers in the evening. Well-prepared breakfast with many options. Warm, welcoming hosts.
- Anke Christel (10/5): Perfect Stay! - Wonderful!!!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The view was amazing, good internet, shower and breakfast
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Nice view of the bay. Although we checked in at 2 pm I didn't feel like the property was ready for us. There were no towels (which we requested and were brought), we were never given a key to our room, never told the wifi code and never told to come in for breakfast.
- X5455RFjohnp (8/5): Great location - This is a wonderful location but agree with an earlier comment about no lock on the room.
It was awkward accessing the guests' lounge through the hosts' lounge.
As a diabetic I am restricted on my breakfast choices so was a bit peeved at being only permitted one egg when I could not eat ANY of the carbohydrate based breakadt fare on offer. In the end, I was allowed to have a second egg as my wife chose not to take up her one egg option.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The location overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Friendly hosts who helped in all always to make the stay good.
- James (8/5): Great location, homely and welcoming - Great location. Homely and welcoming
- LisaT854 (6/5): Fabulous location, but not very restful - We were warmly greeted, and shown to our room, which was cozy and clean. We were a bit surprised to find the door to our room didn't have a lock. The location is beautiful, and we were able to bottle feed a lamb, which was a nice experience for us. We then headed off on a walk to Seal Point, where we were able to get really close up to fur seals, which was completely amazing. After our full day of driving & exploring we were ready for some down time before dinner, but it was not to be. An hour of screaming toddlers and a lot of loud disciplining sent us out the door. Luckily it was better when we got back, but it's a bit awkward that you have to go through the family space to get to the communal space, we felt like we were intruding. The next day we set out early for a dolphin swim, and there was bread, fruit & cereal all laid out for us. We were invited to a sheep shearing demonstration that afternoon, but were a bit surprised to find that as paying guests of the B&B we would still have to pay to see it, so we declined. The swim was incredible and then we spent the rest of the day hiking - the views were spectacular. We had dinner & came back exhausted to find the owners were having some kind of family party. They asked if we wanted breakfast the next day, but I said we were leaving very early, so if they could just leave out some bananas we'd sneak out without bothering anyone. They happily agreed to leave bananas on the porch and we went off to our room. The family party was just outside our room, again the screaming toddlers and disciplining...not the quiet relaxing evening we needed before our early start. The party finally broke up at 10pm. We got up at 5:30 am the next day and quietly made our exit. Sadly, the bananas weren't on the porch as promised either.
- chrismsz (10/5): The Point, Location, Location.....Fabulous - This charming property is in a wonderful location with stunning views of the Kaikoura bay and hills. We were Warmly welcomed by the Hosts and after dropping off our bags we walked to the seal colony nearby.
A memorable breakfast overlooking the wonderful Kaikoura seascape.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Wonderful location with fantastic views of the bay.
- readysteadyteddy (6/5): Perhaps I missed the point - Super house in a superb location. Room was fine, breakfast acceptable. Stayed during 'the Races'. Hostess was out till late and had left instructions to let ourselves in. Making tea, almost ready for bed, when greeted with smiles and quite chatty. Next morning, hardly a word. Did we do something or had the wine worn off? Fuss with the door. She couldn't lock it, so I did. More fuss when she couldn't unlock, so I did that too. Left feeling very uncomfortable as though we had invaded their privacy.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Nice welcome from Pete. Very informative and friendly.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Wonderful - Excellent stay, very peaceful and lovely hosts. Will be back.
- Grant (10/5): - The Point is a lovely homestay with a great view over the ocean. It is on a quiet road close to the seal colony but only a few minutes drive from Kaikoura township. Gwenda was very welcoming and may our stay comfortable.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Beautiful location - only stayed one night but was made feel very comfortable by hosts. Breakfast was great and location fabulous
- Stephen (4/5): Unwelcome at the Inn - Did not feel very welcome and felt like we were intruding in somebody's home. Family and friends were entertained into the evening while we were trying to relax in our room, which did not even have a privacy lock. Also bring your own soap as none is provided.
- littal (10/5): Charming b&b right on the beach and very nice shor - A most lovely experience
Quiet place
Beautiful breakfast setting
Friendly owners
- Verified traveler (10/5): Fabulous location - Wish we had stayed longer, they do a sheep shearing demo daily, the view from the porch is so relaxing, and the garden is lovely.
- Disappointed (6/5): Good view - The room was comfortable and clean. We didn't feel particularly welcomed which made us feel uncomfortable.
The breakfast was adequate.
- D (8/5): Cosy B&B right by the ocean - The host took care of us during our short stay - made reservation for our dinner, gave us the advice of direction as Hwy 1 was closed, made us warm breakfast, let us feed their sheep babies.
Hope we can stay a bit longer at this B&B!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Fantastic location and very nice room. Friendly hosts.
- MeganandNigel (10/5): I Love This Place! - We had a spontaneous trip to Christchurch in June this year (2 adults) with plans to see Christchurch, head up to Kaikoura and follow the ocean up to Nelson then down to Christchurch through the centre. The roads were still severely affected by the 2011 earthquake and the subsequent earthquake November 2016. So had to change our road trip somewhat ( we didn't travel up the coast after Kaikoura but head back to Hamner Springs and up through the centre)
We really wanted to see the animal life and Kaikoura came highly recommended so we took our chances. The road was damaged, blocked, and down to single lane in many places but there were so many teams out there we were as safe as we could be!
The Point Bed and Breakfast is in the best location! Town is small so being "just outside of town" is only a 15 minute walk along the coast ( towards the seal colony) you go past that famous seafood caravan kitchen - we stopped and enjoyed mussels and oysters after our walk - and there it is! This original homestead on a sheep farm. Looks so cute when you drive up to it. The owners are lovely and very welcoming , it was freezing in June and the room was warm and the bed comfortable.
We didn't spend much time as we wanted to take the 3 hour walk through the seal colony around the point ( which is amazing!) then had a very early departure the next morning. Although I could have spent some time sitting on the porch absorbing the amazing views - the mountains across the bay were snow capped already! Breakfast was ready and nice - filled us up and got us ready for our trip to Hamner Springs.
We will definitely be back!
- Ralph (10/5): - Very warm welcome. Lots of advice on things to do in the area.
- Catherine (10/5): Beautiful surf views from the porch - This is a beautiful house with history with wraparound porches, established gardens, and an amazing view from the porch. One of the owners grew up here when her parents ran a sheep farm. Now, the owners keep a few hundred sheep for an interesting twice daily sheep shearing show.
- H4621BEjamiec (10/5): Heart of New zealand - We visited kaikoura for two nights and stayed at the point bed and breakfast.
The owners are very welcoming and friendly. It's situated on a sheep farm. But more of a tourist attraction than a farm. The room is small but very comfortable with a ensuite shower. The views are stunning and the breakfast is just right to start the day. Would definitely stay again. Very quiet location as just off from the town so ideal for some peace and quiet. Seal colony 5 minute walk away.
- MartinWJohnson (10/5): Outstanding hospitality - The Point is a delightful place to stay, a large bungalow in the classic colonial style, overlooking the sea in a very scenic location. Our room was very well-appointed, with a lovely outlook onto the garden, with a large and stylish bathroom. The bed was most comfortable, we slept very well, and the breakfast was delightful, with a wide range of home-made jams and preserves to try out. You will need to book well ahead to get a room here, but it's worth the effort!
- LoriF757 (8/5): Clean and very close to everything in Kaikoura! - We liked this B&B, although it has just an adequate breakfast and the room is a little small. But, it was very clean and tidy. The hosts are not big conversationalists, but many people prefer that. There was a great deal of noise from barking dogs and baa-ing sheep, but you are on a real farm.
- AnjaKristina (10/5): A lovely spot! - We had a lovely couple of nights in this B&B. The view out of our room was already lovely and from the Breakfast table even better! The room was really clean. We had a warm welcome and got a lot of tipps. It feels really homey with the dogs and the cat around who are always happy to meet and greet you (only if you want to!). Lamb feeding was definitely a highlight for us and we also enjoyed Pete's sheep sharing show! The location is also pretty cool. Very close to the seal colony and you can easily do the peninsula walk from there! Full recommendation. We saw quite a number of B&B's in NZ - this one was really authentic and friendly and in our opinion good value for the money.
- azzapensta (8/5): Sensational spot - Our room has the most magnificent views of ocean and snow capped mountains and we can hear the birds. This B&B is in a beautiful tranquil spot and has a seal colony 10 mins down the road one way and a seafood caravan the other way. Our room and bathroom are lovely and our hosts warm and welcoming. What's not to love?!
- JE3754 (10/5): Spectacular View - The view from the front porch of The View is incredible; snow capped mountains, ocean and crashing waves at the point. What more could you ask for? Gwenda is a wonderful, warm, gracious hostess who willingly shares local knowledge, insight and information. Peter let us help feed a new born lamb. The Smith's are hospitable and friendly Kaikourians! Enjoy your stay.
- 391nicolah (8/5): B&B with amazing views - Lovely B&B with amazing views. Located just outside of town so ideal for walking up to the seal colony. Bedroom and bathroom contained everything we needed for a relaxing stay and Peter & Gwenda were very welcoming hosts.
- MattSlab (10/5): Romantic Cottage type accommodation in beautiful location - My wife and I stayed here for 2 nights while on our honeymoon. The accommodation was a gorgeous little bed and breakfast that was only a few minutes out of town in a spectacular location. The host and hostess were extremely friendly and were very helpful in regards to where to go in Kaikoura. Perfect little place for couples wanting a cottage type romantic get away. Our room was quiet and was at the back of the house. We did not hear any noise despite the hosts having guests one evening we stayed there. The bed was comfortable and the overall feel of the room and bathroom was warm and inviting. Would definitely recommend and stay again. Stellar experience.
- 937ROBERTM (10/5): Outstanding B & B - Great looking old farmhouse on the ocean with a continental breakfast that is more like a full breakfast. Very nice host and hostess, clean and cozy room. Be sure to take in the sheep shearing - it's well worth it. Short ride to town. Easy-to-find location.
- june509 (10/5): Welcoming Home - We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Point. Its a warm and welcoming home and Gwenda and Peter are very hospitable. Our room overlooked the rear gardens which are lovely as are all the gardens and the views from the front veranda are amazing overlooking the ocean and mountain range. Our room was cozy and very comfortable and the bathroom had some lovely period features.
We couldn't have been more made to feel at home and if your looking for a real homely feel with really New Zealanders you wont be disappointed at this charming home.
