Guest Reviews
- Javier (6/5): - Desayuno.
- Alexander (6/5): Fine service but junkies in the street. - Fine service at the reception so you almost forgot the junkies in the street and nextdoor apartment entrance.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Fint hotel, men lidt træls beliggenhed.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Very comfortable and close to the central station.
- Harry (2/5): - Ohne Worte
- ben (2/5): Unsavory area - People urinating outside. Dangerous area. The reception man told me i was due a refund and charged me for another night, saying that it would be put back to expedia
- Benji_Tuhak (2/5): Not recommended - Unsafe area, people urinating in the street outside, prostitutes roaming the streets. Room smelled vwry bad due to bathrooom smells. The reception man scammed me into paying an extra night, saying i would get a refund on the night i jad paid with expedia and he charged a cheaper rate. No refund to this day and hotels.com/expedia has not refunded any of my money and also no credit.
- Thorben (6/5): - Preislich super, aber leider absolut unsichere Bahnhofsgegend.
Gode tyrkiske restauranter
- Allan (6/5): - The hotel, the breakfast and service was OK, nothing fancy. The areas where the hotel is situated isn't nice and a bit insecure.
- Britt (10/5): - Rent, enkelt men helt ok!
- Edw (6/5): - The hotel is in an area where drug addicts shoot needles right in front of the entry and across the street. We were able to see them from our room window. I was noisy and people screamed during the night. Terrible!! The room was relatively new and well-appointed. Comfortable bed. The breakfast was not very good.
Man får dock se Hamburgs mörka baksida.
Recomendo !
- Reto (6/5): - Sehr nettes Personal und günstig.
Hotel sehr zentral gelegen. Umgebung (Drogen, Prostitution) eher schrecklich.
- Simone (10/5): - Sehr nettes Personal.
- Morten (8/5): Roligt beliggende hotel i farverigt område - Roligt beliggende hotel i et ellers meget farverigt område.
- OperaBeginner (2/5): The worst, most expensive hotel I’ve stayed in - I stayed for two nights in May, costing £358, i.e. £179 a night.
I wanted somewhere to stay very near to Hamburg railway station – this hotel in about 10 minutes walk away. I didn’t read any of the reviews on the booking site or on other travel sites – if I had, I would have been forewarned and would not have booked.
The first intimations of the kind of area the hotel was in was when I walked from the railway station to the hotel. I passed a number of bars, all had champagne glasses and hearts on their windows: you couldn’t see in and they all looked dark and dingy. Then, I was accosted by two women – this was in mid-afternoon. The pavements also seemed to be covered by packs of cards. This was explained when I came across large groups of young men playing some kind of card game on the ground. Next to the card game, there was a very large residence with people hanging around the entrance: in London, I would have guessed it was a homeless centre.
I finally got to the hotel and was asked to pay a local tax, which I did in cash but got no change. It wasn’t much but I decided not to argue.
My room was small and didn’t have a bed, more of a couch. The ‘headboard’ end (there wasn’t one) was right next to the radiator control so I had to watch out that I didn’t brain myself every time I lay down.
The breakfast was basic, everything out of a packet and fridge cold.
All the streets around the hotel had lots of anti-social behaviour and groups of police who weren’t doing anything but seemed to be there to make sure that things didn’t get out of hand. Maybe, it was the nearness to the station that led to the overspill. Of course, you can see the homeless / beggars / mentally ill / substance misusers at most central London railway stations but not in the quantity that there were at Hamburg railway station. And the numbers of police – far, far more than you would see at any London station. Again, they weren’t moving people on but just standing there, keeping an eye on things.
I don’t mind rough areas – I’m not an American constantly worried about ‘security’ – or a basic hotel but not at this price.
This experience has taught me to do a little more research in future!
- Brian (4/5): - Hotellet ligger midt i et luderdistrikt. Og i den billige ende…. Hotellet er pænt. Men værelserne er slidte.
- Karin (6/5): - Badezimmer etwas klein.
- MiaLokS (2/5): Horrible! Do not book! - We were welcomed by young people fixing at the front door accompanied by prostitutes and drug dealers. The room was poor and not clean. Old rug all over the hotel. Did not get Any sleep because of shouts and screams from the street. I felt very unsafe!
- Verified traveler (6/5): No lift - We were on the top 4th floor with no lift, not a good place for elderly guests.
- Harrison (10/5): Signature Astoria stay - Amazing but nice
- JUYONG (8/5): - The staffs were very friendly
- Luc (8/5): Hamburg - I stayed 1 night and it suited my needs. Was a short walk to the bus and train station and the room was comfortable. However the area the hotel is located in is not the best but for one night it wasn’t a problem.
- Alejandra (6/5): - It is not like the pictures, staff doesn’t speak English fluently so it’s very difficult to communicate. Hotel is old, you always have to put 10 stairs up from the elevator to the floor where the rooms are located. Those stairs are terrible when you luggage. There is nobody to help you with the bags. It is in bad location and every night people from the street gathers to drink outside of the hotel door.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Welcoming staff but exterior of the hotel need TLC - The staff are friendly, diverse and multicultural. very professional and welcoming staff, enjoyed good conversation as they really seem to love their job, especially Farid. Breakfast did not have any hot option, but there was enough bread, spreads, hot drinks, cereal, yoghurt etc... Luggage storage service is definitely a plus. Only thing is they really really need to ensure that the sex workers and drug addicts and dealers are not all over the entrance as that was very uncomfortable.
- G8783DSzuzanak (2/5): Very bad, choose another one if you can - I agree with the worst reviews here, wouldn't include the location, locations near main train stations are unpleasant everywhere. but this hotel is dirty, staff try to be polite with being familiar and addressing you with the first name, what is actually extremely intrusive. I wouldn't recommend the hotel.
- Adasobz (2/5): DO NOT! stay here if you are a girl! - We had two nights booked here. Didn't stay for any of them.
Once we arrived i booked a new hotel for me and my partner to stay straight away. There was no way a girl should stay in this hotel unless she wants to get TAKEN.
Drug dealers and prostitutes on the entire street.
The hotel male staff smoke outside together with the drug dealers. I am sure if the right type of girl stayed at this hotel she would be kidnapped.
I did not feel safe whatsoever and we didn't stay.
Paid for a new hotel on the spot without thinking twice or with any regrets.
Stay Away!
- Pawel (8/5): Small but clean room, colorful area - Hotel is not brand new - you can feel its age. But room was clean and neat. Maybe just too small for my taste. Service very polite and nice (maybe except one person who seemed bit shy). Other reviews complain about working ladies on the street. I noticed that this whole area is bit "colorful" - with various types of people gathering on platz nearby. But it was safe. I spend there 6 days and saw not a single issue like harassment/aggression etc. (which happens in many famous tourists places in best european cities)... For the price I think it's good value...
- Lars (2/5): An ice cold room - When I came to the room the heat was turned off and it was almost as cold as outside. I turned on the heat but the room was ice cold all night. I asked in the reception for some extra heat, but they could not fix that.
In the morning it was warm again, but the evening in this hotel was terrible.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Nothing out of the ordinary just a very basic hotel so nothing to recommend it prostituting in the day time on the street is a discrace I don't understand why the police don't do something about it because they are not doing their job in my opinion.
- Gary (8/5): - The hotel itself was ideally placed for travel links for the city centre and the hotel itself was adequete for the price you pay.
However the road is in an unofficial red light district and there are about a dozen prostitutes operating from the front of the hotel they even stand on the steps of the hotel entrance.
There are 4 or 5 local bars in the same street and not advisable to venture into them .
The police turn up on a regular basis but the women just play cat and mouse with them
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Room a decent size and in good condition. Plenty of power sockets. Good shower.
- valiav90 (2/5): Worst hotel of my life - Truth is I only looked it up on booking. I arrived at night welcomed by junkies shooting up next door and prostitutes.. I have never been around a worse site let alone stay.. Couple of the staff was friendly but not all of them. The hotel is mediocre and too noisy. I think I could hear the prostitutes as well but I won't get into it. Wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The staff is super nice. Everything is fantastic! The breakfast is also very good!
- Maria Paula (2/5): - The Hotel is in the main street of drug dealing and prostitution
- Verified traveler (6/5): - nothing wrong with the hotel, small bathrooms, but tidy and functional, the breakfast is fair.
but you have to understand the location is not good with prostitutes hanging around outside the entrance at most hours of the day. safe enough just unpleasant
- mikedk2920 (2/5): How dare Hotels.com list this ‘hotel’? - I can only say, a street full of prostitutes, immigrants, drugsellers & police. Special ‘alarm’ at your hotel room door. I decided to book another hotel, I was simply too scared that something would happen during night. Take this socalled ‘hotel’ of your listing hotels.com!
- Dptsnoop (2/5): Worse hotel and area ever. - I will start by saying . If you go to Hamburg don't stay anywhere near this hotel area stay near docklands. Drug users prostitutes and alcoholics line the streets in this run down part of the city. Shouting till all hours of the morning hotel dirty and old worn out deco.hated every second of being there . Didn't get any better further I went out . Till I got round docklands then it improved a bit. Really not what I thought it would be .
- Verified traveler (2/5): Don't stay here! - Day staff helpful, night staff not so helpful. Hotel could do with updating in the corridors, room and breakfast room ok. The worst thing is that the hotel is on a street that has prostitutes, drunks, drug dealers and addicts up and down it day and night. Prostitutes were outside the hotel sat on the hotel steps. Security at hotel reception lapse. Very noisy until about 3am. Glass and other sharp debris littering road and path.
- MadCapPenny (4/5): No, you'll feel unsafe! - No, never, I will not recommend this hotel. The hotel is surrounded with drug users and hoockers. The working girls is nice and quiet but I did not want to go home later then 07.00pm!! The rooms are poorly designed and every inch is covered with carpet. DIRTY carpet! The rooms wasn't clean, hot and noisy. Bring earplugs, the brothel next door is open at night and there was a lot of police cars etc.
Two of the employees was really nice, did not speak English so well but really nice(that's why a 2 and not a 1).
- Andrew (6/5): Guard of honour - The hotel is ok but is located in an area of town frequented by ladies of the night. Whenever you leave or arrive at the hotel, you are greeted by a dubious guard of honour. Room was very clean. New shower, quite powerful. Breakfast reasonable.
- Verified traveler (6/5): NOT what I expected. - Depending on your stride its a 3-5min walk to the central station or simply call a taxi using the vmy taxi/free now app.
Would not stay here again-definitely not. The towel in the bathroom looked like they had been there for a while, had a large dark dirt mark where it rested on the rail. The shower was very restricting and I'm merely 5'7, and to make it worst the shower curtain wanting to caress me. The curtains had stains as well and the room dusty.
Outside was rather noisy and through your window if you're "lucky" to get a street view you'll definitely see a lot happening.....prostitutes on the prowl, drug deals and usage. Also could hear heavy breathing and giggles in the hallway.
They lift doesn't take you directly to your floor, you still have to climb a flight of stairs, then open a door and there were no lights except for the very dim one over my door. The only light on the floor.
There's a strange 'leave your room key behind' policy that made me quite uncomfortable, and when I asked was told its because its the only copy--YET, I slept in late and guess who had a key attempting to come in? Housekeeping. Now how would that be possible if I had the only key..... Maybe I was so uncomfortable with that because of the persons i saw as I stepped outside, knowing the keys were just hanging on a wall.
If you're out for an adventure you can find it here.
- Manpreet (2/5): - Rude and not cooperating staff no cleaning no replacement of used soaps tissues and sheets did not get us taxi on last day
- Pamela (4/5): - Horrible Hotel, should be marked that it is close by prostitute and druggy place.
- Chang (2/5): - The hotel is placed in a very unpleasant neighbourhood. The rooms are much smaller than advertised on the photos. The bathroom is extremely small and had hair in the sink when we arrived. The table in our room was so frail that we were concerned to put anything on it. Due to the neighbourhood and some red light business going on on the street infront of the hotel, the night can be very noisy. All at all a very unpleasant experience!
- Lisi19 (4/5): Middle class hotel in drug and red light area - The Signature Hotel Astoria has a middle class comfort, however, it's situated within the drug and illegal prostitution area of Hamburg. Our room was quite small. All together it was ok, even though it could have been cleaner and less noisy. We had a nice view on drug dealing and crack use out of our window. The whole street (Brennerstraße) is full of dubious bars and especially the area in front of the hotel is quite scary, especially as a woman. Once there was a sign at the door of the hotel saying "I will be right back". While waiting, I was asked how much I would cost. Taken together, the hotel was not cheap and I would prefere to stay somewhere else next time.
- KokoBel (6/5): Standard Double Room - The hotel is an easy walk from the bus or train station. I had to climb a few steps to get to hotel reception (travelers hate stairs), then fill in a form (how archaic). I had to climb another flight of stairs to reach the mezzanine floor, where the elevator is located. Accessing the free WiFi required connecting via a webpage. Everything about this hotel felt a little last century.
My room was damn cold as I checked in. After switching on the heating, it took hours before the room temperature was comfortable. The room itself was perfectly fine, though a fridge was sorely missing.
And yes, there are prostitutes roaming the Brennerstrasse, both during the daytime and at night. If a friendly hello from a working girl offends you, choose a different hotel.
- Kiddo1903 (2/5): Worst hotel I’ve stayed in - Was meant to stay at this hotel from Monday 27th until Friday 31st may, but checked out two days early and moved to another hotel.
The room was okay but on website it mentions that they have soundproof window and safes in their rooms, this is not the case!!!!
Breakfast was terrible as well!
The staff at reception could
Not care less, when complaining about the noise and no safe the just shrugged their shoulders and said we don’t care.
Then the room below us was having a party with music really loud having gone to reception on three occasions between 11pm and 2pm the just said to me to get on with it.
Usually by this point I would go a bit mad but kept my cool and checked out early, I have also contacted my credit card company for refund.
Also outside and at the front steps of the hotel is nothing but hookers!!!!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Quiet hotel, courteous staff, very efficiently run, excellent breakfast
- Delorese (6/5): Interesting but safe area close to the station. - The hotel. Is in easy walking distance from the main railroad station. The area has prostutes standing in doorways but is not part of but near Hamburg's famous redlight district. There are many Indian restaurants in the area. The area is dirty but I felt very safe
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Great breakfast, comfortable, a little small but OK.
Tons of hookers and drug users in this entire area of town... Obviously ne
- 850bryanh (6/5): Not the best area - I haven’t stayed at this hotel before but walking from the station to the hotel I just sent a little bit of something was going on! Lots of girls hanging round the corners! The hotel itself it’s cheap and it was fine the breakfast was okay the staff were really nice nothing happened to me. But on the first night I could have lots of noise from a couple which wasn’t pleasant. Anyway I find out that there is a brothel next door to the hotel and prostitutes are allowed to be on the main streets hanging around which is not really good if you’ve got family it’s really. I spoke to the hotel about it but I don’t understand why the management don’t call the police or something. But otherwise the hotel was fine. 10 minute walk to Central Station which was great because I was working in different cities. I wouldn’t recommend it if you’ve got a family and you feel uncomfortable with prostitutes outside your hotel.
- Morteza (6/5): Fun stay and wonderful staff - Signature Hotel Astoria in Hamburg is a budget friendly and comfortable hotel to stay. The staff are wonderful, kind and helpful specially Ramin in front desk and Mohammad in restaurant. Mohammad helped me to download the website of Hamburg Metro Transit System in my smart phone which was a big help for me to figure out how to use the roads, S bahn, U bahn and other features of this helpful site for the travelers, specially for those who came for the first time to Hamburg. For an American MALE tourist, city of Hamburg and specially this hotel's neibourhood has special advantures that could not be found in US cities. So based on the money you spend and the joy you get from your stay, it's fun.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Clean and no frills but rundown - The only benefit to this hotel is its proximity to the Hauptbahnhof (about 0.3 mile). However, it's not a particularly nice neighbourhood, so unless you are coming in from a late train or need to catch an early train, I'd stay elsewhere. It's very basic, and a bit run-down. The staff aren't particularly friendly or helpful (and were usually outside smoking with people hanging about outside whenever we returned to the hotel). One of the reasons I booked this property was the free breakfast, but it was inedible. I asked in the booking and on two mornings for soya or other plant-based milk, but they only had dairy. The only fruit was from giant tins and had a taste of urine and dirt. I brought my own peanut butter to put on a roll and had to add a pile of sugar to make the coffee drinkable. Would be better to not bother, but I did not see any nearby cafes to eat breakfast at, other than getting something from the station. The room was clean, but quite small, and everything felt a bit shabby. The shower is tiny. Security did not feel great, with windows without very good locks straight onto a ground floor garden. Overpriced for the location and lack of quality.
- D (8/5): Good location - Good location within 5 - 10 minutes of Hamburg central station, great breakfast.
- Ovidiu Mircea (8/5): Alles ok! - Alles ok!
- Verified traveler (6/5): - When I checked in, they gave me keys to a single room because I was alone, even though I had booked a double room. Had to go back to reception to get a different room allocated. No phone in the room. Bathroom was fine. Breakfast was disappointing. Only white bread, a toaster, scrambled eggs (buffet style), bread rolls, butter, jam, cream cheese, cheese, cold meats and fruit from a tin 😷 Poor value for the cost.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Good fit for a single person on a budget. - The hotel itself isn't bad, the internet works just fine, the room is clean (albeit tiny) and the service is generally satisfactory. No complaints about the staff or the breakfast either. Basically, when I look at the price I paid and what I got for it, everything seems totally fair, especially considering this hotel is in an important city in a developed country.
Now, there is nothing wrong with the inside, but I can't say the same for the outside. The surrounding area is downright horrid. Across the street is a Kurdish Islamic Centre, which appears to be frequented by shady characters. The street is full of prostitutes who are clearly on drugs, and the general area is full of the type of undesirable folk that you'd expect to encounter in the back streets of NYC. All those people appear to be minding their own business for the most part though, and I didn't feel my safety was compromised at any point. That said, the street workers do pick on single men and attempt to initiate a conversation in hopes of doing some business, but they give up easily upon display of disinterest. If you get squeamish at the sight of undesirable characters and people with shattered lives, this hotel might not be your cup of tea. But don't forget it's also *very* close to the central stations (train and bus alike, as they are within a stone's throw of one another), and late night eateries of all sorts abound.
All in all, I'd recommend this hotel to anyone on a budget.
- Juni (8/5): - Good value hotel close to main station
Do not get afraid of the neighborhood (immigrants, prostitutes, jobless people, drinking males, etc, etc)
It is safe !
- Verified traveler (8/5): Convenient for Hauptbahnhof and St. Georg area - The room was very clean, but also very small, especially the bathroom. It was almost impossible to even use the toilet. But the shower was the strongest I have ever seen in my life. Good breakfast, but only tables for 4 people, so be prepared to socialize first thing in the morning.
Everyone I interacted with at the front desk was helpful and friendly.
The location is great for St. Georg, but be aware that this is a neighborhood with some “seedy” aspects that some people may feel uncomfortable with.
- Tanya (8/5): Pleasant and convenient - It was very convenient hotel. Nothing flash but did what I needed. Provided a clean bed to stay in a central location within walking distance of train. The room is very tiny.
- Andrew (8/5): - Close to all amenities that Hamburg has to offer. Good value for money.
- Zongo (10/5): Close to HBF - About a 10 min walk to the HBF it was very easy to get to and find, Staff was friendly and room was clean. The area is a little sketchy at night but there were no problems, would probably stay again.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Bad neighborhood, rooms ok, poor breakfast - Room was ok, breakfast was really poor, plates were constantly empty and we had to ask all the time for the food to be refilled. Bad neighborhood (full of prostitutes and cabarets) but it was close to the station which was convenient. Staff was friendly.
- Eddie (10/5): Surprise in Hamburg - After reading previous reviews on this hotel I was not really expecting much. When I got there I was greeted by a friendly Desk Clerk and checking in real early he had the cleaning staff get my room ready first. I got a great room on the 2nd floor on the back side of the hotel, although the view was not great you heard no noise from the city at all. The breakfast every morning was very good and all of the products were quality. I would keep this hotel in mind for future trips to Hamburg based on value, service and location.
- Vill (8/5): Nice hotel 2 minutes walk from the city centre - Very pleased with the experience. Close to all the shops, bars and restaurants. Nice breakfast, friendly staff.
- Craig (8/5): Excellent location for 🚆 - Good standard budget hotel excellent location, central to transport links, restaurants and bars.
