- Jeffrey (10/5): A fantastic modern ryokan - We wanted to stay in a ryokan with a good onsen at the end of our Central Hokkaido ski trip in mid January 2026. We chose Kasho Gyoen instead of one of the other ryokan hotels in Jozankei Onsen because it looked like it had a different vibe from the other ryokans we previously stayed at. The architectural style is modern Japanese (opened in 2018), the dinner is is not a traditional Japanese kaiseki but Italian degustation with Japanese ingredients (really fantastic) and all rooms have their own private onsen (which means couples can go together, unlike the public onsens which are gender separated). We're super glad we chose this place, we would now rate it in as one of our favourite ryokans in the whole of Japan. Pro Tip: Visit the bright red Futami Suspension Bridge in winter even if the path is completely snow covered (though watch your steps on the way up and down, it can be a bit slippery). It's only a short walk (say 15 minutes, one way). It's still magical even when the snow is dumping down from on high (like it did on the day we visited). About 10 minutes from Kasho Gyoen. Nothing in particular, other than the fact I'd have preferred it if Kasho Gyoen had a public onsen, which is usually larger than a private one with multiple pools (indoor and outdoor) with different temperatures.

- Clare (10/5): We loved staying in this beautiful and relaxing ryokan, and particularly enjoyed the amazing food! - We highly recommend Okujozankei Onsen Kasho Gyoen! Staying at this ryokan for two nights was a major highlight of our three-week trip to Japan. The room was so spacious and relaxing, and we loved having the onsen right in the room. The staff were so kind, accommodating, and made our stay so special. The food was incredible and the chef went above and beyond to accommodate our dietary restrictions. We can't wait to come back some day! Everything was amazing!

The staff were so helpful to communicate with in advance, and we travelled via the free shuttle bus from Sapporo Station. The hotel, food, room, and staff were exceptional, and included English speaking staff - Lorre was lovely and so helpful. We travelled as a family of four and our corner room was perfect, with two beds and two futons. Having the private onsen overlooking the snow was just incredible, and private so each member could use it individually. We had dinner and breakfast in a private dining room and the food was just amazing. Everything was perfect and I would highly recommend the hotel to anyone seeking a real ryokan experience. One night was not enough. I cannot think of anything they could improve, it was perfection.

From start to finish our 2 night stay was wonderful. The welcome ( we were met in the car park as we drove in , and helped with our bags ) offered a glass of fizz as we checked in . Our room was spacious , tatami floored and totally Japanese with a private onsen . Dinner and breakfast were served overlooking an exquisite garden and pond . There was also a separate Japanese Garden to enjoy . The meals were really interesting and beautiful cooked . It has an open kitchen which is spotless and calm. I didn’t want leave . 2 nights was not enough . Now we know it’s so convenient for Sapporo we will definitely return . Nothing , it is perfect .

Special shout out to Lorre who was fluent in japanese and english, extremely helpful, capable knowledgeable and pleasant. Food was excellent- special thanks to the Chef who presented beautiful and delicious Japanese breakfast and italian dinners. The Laundry facilities were a plus Minor points: more laundry machines? Long wait as only 1 washer and dryer especially when full house. You need a car to make day trips. Perhaps a window that can be opened to transform the indoor onsen to an outdoor one. Airconditioning tends to get somewhat stuffy in the middle of the night for some reason

The rooms were amazing - private hot spring bath in the room and very comfortable. Also the meals were delicious! The dinners were on par with really fancy Italian restaurants in the US. The service was also exceptional! Perfect for staying for 1 or 2 nights. We went there for the first two days of our honeymoon and it was exactly what we wanted. - Carol (10/5): An Absolute Retreat for Peace & Quiet - The hotel was beautiful with contemporary features. We had a gorgeous room with a huge window facing the woods. There was a hot spring bath within the room which was wonderful. The room was very clean, quiet ( save for the pleasant gurgling sound of water from the bath), well furnished and the bed comfortable. The staff was very hospitable, always with a ready smile and made one feel very welcome, in particular Mr Pun who was very helpful and eager to help with sightseeing suggestions. Breakfast was good but the Italian dinner was even better. Nothing but wanted to say that although the location is not very remote, a car is advisable in order to visit the various gardens and parks, hiking sites, bridge etc. We did not see many restaurants nearby although there are some places for lunch & cafes around. It would be best to plan ahead for one's meals.

- CHOON YAP (10/5): - Amazing location and amazing room. Service was personal and impeccable. Food was top notch and quality of food used was amazing. Every meals looks like a fine dine standard meal. View from room was amazing!!!
- Reynolds (10/5): - If you were choose one hotel that reflect the japanese wilderness experience in luxury setting this is it. Best food on Japan. 1 1/2 hour from Saparo and 1 from Niseko.
- Kok (10/5): A very relaxing stay.. - Breakfast and dinner are great. Staff are helpful and polite. Due to the remote location, hotel also provides night snacks and soda. Coffee is complementary. Washer and dryer are provided to guests for self laundry service. Nothing.
- Grace (8/5): Great short stay - The staff are just superb. Nothing is too much trouble. They remember my preferences. The room is very clean and the view from the third floor was great. This is a good small ryokan. Just my bed because it is too soft - not anyone's fault.

- Sunghye (10/5): Would absolutely go back if able to! - I was specifically looking for a remotely located hotel with ensuite onsen to finish off my work-vacation in Hokkaido and this was perfect. I had a big window that looked out into the beautiful winter scenery that I could also enjoy from my bed and the onsen. They fed me such good food that my palate is forever spoiled (for the better). The staff are super helpful and all very lovely. They helped me book a taxi to go straight to New Chitose Airport and told me beforehand how much the whole trip would cost which was great for me budgeting. However, there was a toll fee the taxi driver had to pay for himself out of pocket (which I don't understand because that cost was incurred during his job) and although I was able to pay the taxi fare with my visa credit card, he wouldn't accept my card as a payment for the toll, only cash (which I didn't have..). Maybe in the future, the hotel can include this in the instructions for other people. All in all, great experience!

- Ho (9/5): Nice Holiday Escape - Nice holiday escape; very relaxing & quiet atmosphere, remotely located (in a positive way), friendly staff, delicious food, cozy in house onsen, spacious room. I tried to communicate with the hotel beforehand about some food allergies and check-in logistics, but the staff kept replying me in Japanese which was frustrating. At the end I had to ask my Japanese friend to help to call up the hotel to confirm everything. On top of that, the breakfast is nice while I prefer more selections from the buffet session.

Spa service was wonderful too. Maybe a craft class, hiking tour, cooking class, some type of activity if you get bored. We went out and played in the snow.
- 이 (9/5): Superb - The facilities and staff were extremely friendly, and nestled in the forest, this accommodation is perfect for relaxation. The absence of nearby distractions only enhances the serene atmosphere, making it an ideal retreat for unwinding.

- Karen (8/5): - Returning visitor - been about a year and a half since my last visit and was happy to see the spa folks still there. However we did have a dislike for a newer service they have using an electric scalp machine (do not recommend as it was very painful and traumatizing for my partner). The massage services were wonderful as usual. An issue though (same as last time), was cleaning of higher shelves. I placed my clothes on the higher shelves (I’m taller) and they came back chock full of dust. Please get your cleaning staff and step ladder so they can clean all the way up. This was an issue last visit and was told they would address it but seems perhaps this was forgotten. 😅 Dinner was awkward this go around in that there is now a service charge for private dining rooms. Also reservations were required. While they made it work for my family I wish I’d have known about this in advance as that was a change. I’d have made advanced reservations if I could just to avoid the awkwardness that came during our stay. Food was just as good as before. Thank you. A lot of new faces but still some friendly ones. Since English didn’t appear to be any except perhaps 1 team members default language, there were some mix ups on seating and service but eventually got those worked out (just not ideal). Rooms were perfect. No complaints here, only joy (room service was good). Only ask would have been to have the Ryoken with more slippers and robes for taller travelers like myself.
- Vanessa (10/5): Worth every penny - We had the best stay at Okujozankei. From the moment we pulled up to the property, we were spoiled. The staff were attentive and thoughtful. The building and garden were beautiful. The room itself was clean and so cost. Meals were absolutely delectable and served in generous portions as well. It’s located in a pretty remote area not nearby Jozankei town, but the peace and tranquility is perfect. Nothing beats soaking in your own private onsen while enjoying the quiet snowfall.

Also it doesn’t feel good when we been told to move our shuttle bus seats to the back when I have a car sick. Then they allowed Japanese couple to sit in front.

- Sook mun (10/5): Absolutely loved this hotel! - It was amazing from the moment we arrived in our car, there were staffs greeting us and ready to help us unload the bags. Then we were led to the check in seating area and was offered some wine and non alcoholic beverage. The staff showed us the room and everything that we needed to know. The room was overlooking the reserve forest and it looks so beautiful with snow covered trees. The private bath in the room was just the cherry to the cake. During dinner time, the 5 course menu was amazing and the presentation was immaculate. There were also some snacks prepared in case people were still hungry. Would definitely stay here again.

- 陳信智 (9/5): Superb - This was my first time staying at a hotel in a Japanese hot spring area, and let me tell you, it was amazing! The room was spacious and very Japanese-style, and the large windows offered stunning views of the surrounding area. I was lucky enough to visit during a snowfall, and the scenery was absolutely breathtaking. I highly recommend coming here during winter to soak in the hot spring while enjoying the snowy landscape. It's truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The Italian dinner was a good experience, but the variety of dishes could have been more extensive. Five courses seemed a bit too few, and perhaps a soup course could have been added. I enjoyed the Japanese breakfast, but I think the buffet could be improved with more choices.
- Kuna (9/5): Superb - The hotel is sparkling clean. Staffs are service minded and can speak English. The private onsen in room was relaxing. The food was amazing. It was delicious both dinner and breakfast. The ingredients used for meals featured Hokkaido ingredients. They were cooked perfect although the portion is a bit small. The hotel is not in Jozankei onsen town. It's a bit off. Luckily we had a car so its not a problem to go the Jozankei onsen. There's not many facilities in the hotel e.g.fitness, laundry, public bath. So there's nothing much to do but to sit and relax.

- Kim (10/5): Outstanding onsen - Fantastic staff! Modern, clean facility with staff that were friendly, professional and very accommodating. When we pulled into the property, not quite sure we were in the right place, we were greeted by a young woman who asked our name and assured us we were in the right place. The cuisine was outstanding. The entire experience was great.
- Mirko (7/5): Good - The hotel staff Is incredible, the room with private onsen Is Amazing!! The room feels a bit dated, there was a distinctive bad smell in the room (sewage like), the bed is also incredibly uncomfortable, with strange pillows and rock solid mattress. What I liked the least is definitely the breakfast, if you intend to serve international tourists you should also serve a western breakfast or at least have a corner with cereal and bread, not everyone likes to eat soup and fish eggs for breakfast. The kitchen is not open to accepting requests, this was disappointing

Such friendly staff and the best Japanese/ Italian meal we had in Japan. Nice big family room with separated Japanese “wall” during nighttime We love bathing outside in the summertime. From the photos, we got the impression that this would be possible. However, we didn’t really miss it, and we would happily choose the same hotel next time 🙏
