Guest Reviews
- John (10/5): - The owner and staff were amazing…so sad we were there only for one night for a music show. Gracious and amazing
- Phil&Gal (8/5): - We loved the old house.Having to pay for towels was a bit akward. The host was nice but the house rules presentation was heavy during check in
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- Angela (10/5): Photo show the view outside our window. - Wonderful place to stay in Nara, a beautiful traditional Japanese house, quiet, nice neighborhood, about 10-15 minutes walk to shopping and restaurant area, but we don’t mind the walk through the peaceful and beautiful alleys.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Ihana majoitus - Vanha tunnelmallinen talo kävelymatkan päässä juna asemalta, jota pyörittää mitä ystävällisin vanha pariskunta. Majoitus yksityishuoneissa on perinteisillä futoneilla, tunnelmallisissa huoneissa. Talo on upea!
- Verified traveler (10/5):
- Verified traveler (10/5): I loved being there and it felt like family. - You need to be aware of other people. That´s it, just like you would do at home :)
They helped us in all they could and were truly interested in sharing with us.
If you decide to go, share with them your plans and things you would like to do, they know a lot of people and can point you in the right direction.
Would definitely go again!!!
- Mahmoud (10/5): - Clean place and warm people, I would totally stay there again. Kumiko and Shinju really make you feel home.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Otherwise a great place to stay. - Review of Guesthouse Naramachi
The introduction and tour by the proprietor as well as the officious explanation of the myriad of strict rules might leave you feeling you have just landed on a prison farm. He may ask for your passport four times if you do not hand it over within ten seconds. The piano music, which plays until 11PM, (doors locked at 10) might be flattered to be described as sappy and is on a perpetual repeat cycle. If you want an early night it isn’t possible. A good pair of ear plugs is strongly recommended - the sound barriers between the rooms are less than paper thin.
All paths from bathroom to bedroom pass through the only living area which is charming. There are only two bathrooms and two showers, insufficient for the number of guests. The stairs to the sleeping rooms are steeper and longer than most temples so bring climbing slippers bigger than size 8 men’s – the proprietor will insist you wear them. If you are anywhere close to six feet tall you may want a hard hat – there are low ceilings in some areas.
After you have stripped your bed (rule 62) in the morning, the wife (or helper) of the proprietor will ask you to account for your bedding and towels as though you might slip them into your luggage. Towels will cost you extra.
Otherwise a great place to stay.
- YEONGUK (10/5): Soooooo clean - very well organized, clean, comfort, best guesthouse I have been. Alomost 100 years buiding is renovated and become the good hostel equped with modern conveniency by the owner.
I made a mistake with my booking but the owner showed generous with smile.
I will come again if i have a chance to visit Nara again.
Do book this hostel !
- KATHLEEN (6/5): Fine, but Out of the Way - I needed a bus to get there from the train station.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Great experience - My wife and I stayed here for one night and wish we could have stayed longer! The couple that owns this place are extremely nice and helpful. The Naramachi area is great for walking around and checking our the shops. And the building itself is beautiful with a ton of history. We booked a private room and it was well worth it.
- Carly (8/5): Guesthouse with a friendly ambience - Although this guesthouse has more dorm-style accommodation we stayed in a private traditional room, with two Japanese futons and lots of space ('deluxe room'), which I would highly recommend. There are only two showers downstairs with limited times to use them (early morning to 10am & 5pm-10:30pm) and food must be kept and eaten downstairs. This meant that the guests and hosts socialised quite a bit in the evening, either drinking tea whilst waiting for the shower to free up or eating snacks together.
- Kevin (10/5): Traditional experience - Enjoyed our one night stay. It was fun staying in a ryokan. The place is well taken care of and the couple that runs the place takes great care and pride in their guesthouse.
- Yi Chun (10/5): Home-like, cozy stay. - We spent a cozy night here with comfortable bed. Warm greeting from the host and casual chatting with other guests did make this a home-like stay. Surely a nice place when we came to Nara next time.
- Kay (10/5): Friendly and warm guest house - It's an awesome stay so far in Kansai, love this guesthouse, it's really friendly and feel like u are home. Things are so pretty in the house and very cleans
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- Verified traveler (6/5):
- Verified traveler (10/5): Excellence - Excellence. The most pretty good Japanese interior design mixed western concept is really good looking. Clean very where and good facilities arrangement is very nice to care about all travelers. The staff can speak English very well. I recommend all travelers to consider this guest house. Not only focus on "value for money". This is very nice place for all travelers take a break for relaxation.
- Verified traveler (10/5):
- Edward (4/5): - We are a couple just reach 60yrs old and this is our first experience staying in a guest house. It definitely suits young travelers with budget in mind. we pay approximately A$ 87 something and get the only room on ground floor.
Share bathroom, toilets and public area is clean, coffee and tea is provided in the public area. I like the nearby which I feel like living in the local residential precinct.
- Richard (10/5): Excellent value and a warm welcome in Naramachi - On the southern edge of Naramachi, but convenient for exploring all of Nara's attractions.Shunju-san and Kumiko-san couldn't have been more welcoming, and the calligraphy-themed room overlooking the garden is all you could want for a traditional guesthouse stay.
- bettina (10/5): Very friendly guesthouse - Very, very friendly owners who took their time to introduce us to their home, the rooms and the area. We could even choose between the two Japanese-style rooms. Luggage can be deposited beyond check-in/check out times. Spacious, clean room (we chose one of the deluxe room for 2 people which was a bit more expensive but definitely worth the price). Nice lounge area which makes you feel at home immediately.
- Holly (10/5): Wonderful spot! - We had an amazing two nights in Nara staying at Guesthouse Naramachi! The owners are so kind and helpful. The house is a beautiful 100 year old house and it felt really unique and special to stay there, as opposed to some hotel. Our room was beautifully setup, and though we slept on the floor the mats were extremely comfortable! I highly recommend staying here if you decide to visit beautiful Nara.
- Verified traveler (8/5):
- Aizhu (10/5): good stay - It's near KYBOATE STATION and you can take a train to JR NARA STATION. The guesthouse is really great. But at night, there are no restaurants around and it is dark. But there is a familymart nearby.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Nice experience - It's nice place to stay. We stayed in the deluxe double room on the first floor. I think it would be hard to take your luggage upstairs if you choose the double room on the second floor. The owners are friendly. It's close to bus stop and Family Mart.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Personal Touch at Unbeatable Value - Our only small grouse is the late check in and early check out. Love the quiet and peaceful Naramachi area which has Machiya houses dotting narrow alleys. Guesthouse owner Shunjju and wife were helpful, spoke good English and gave us a wonderfully spacious heritage room on the ground floor. The personal touch was definitely there. It would be helpful if mainlander tourists kept the spotlessly clean (before use) bathrooms and toilets clean after use.
- Manuel (10/5): The perfect guesthouse? - When I arrived the owner did all the paperwork swiftly and showed me around. From a European point of view, this is spectacular:clean, modern, small yes but you get your own space when closing the curtains of your bunk bed, there's wifi, a power socket and a shelf for your bags. Air con works perfectly. Downstairs in the commons tea, coffee and ice water is available. Towels and Japanese yukata are available to hire, 100y each and all the rest of the toiletries are available and free to use.
The owners are talking to everybody, keeping updates on weather, visits to do and events in town. The 100 years old building is located south of the old nara, a bit of a walk from the station but still a great place to stay. Highly recommended!
