Guest Reviews
- Paul (7/5): - Lovely location, nice size and very comfortable room. Shower and bath was great and staff on duty were very helpful. It always felt understaffed, especially around meal times.
- Natalie (8/5): - Lovely room with great views. Nice gardens to walk around and dog friendly. It was quite expensive. Parking was very difficult even as a resident.
- SHIRLEY (9/5): A wonderful break in beautiful surroundings - We had a beautiful large room overlooking the fields and the valley. We had a lovely terrace where we sat and watched the wildlife and sat out and enjoyed the sunshine. The food was excellent and all the staff were very attentive. There was nothing we did not like about our stay. We will certainly return if we are that way again.
- Martin (8/5): N/a - Location and restaurant Nothing
- Simon (10/5): -
- Neil (10/5): Amazing place to stay - Location and and the food is amazing Nothing would go back tomorrow
- Jean (10/5): The perfect stay - So lovely. Everything about it. The setting the staff the food the service the room. Loved it all!! Oh and the views! I forgot to mention... Breathtaking.
- Mike (9/5): Excellent stay, will stay again. - Very good location, with excellent views of the sunset overlooking the hills. The overall cleanliness was exceptional. The food & service was excellent, staff were friendly and accommodating. Parking was limited.
- Anita (10/5): - The food was of a very high standard
Also the room was extremely spacious and decorated very well Leaving
- Andy (10/5): Very comfortable bed and room, excellent staff and very welcoming to our dog. - The staff were brilliant, especially the lovely lady on reception, she was lovely to our dog, not always guaranteed even in 'pet friendly' establishments. All other staff and the room was lovely too. Some of the decor is looking a little tired and in need of some are, for example the drapes in the breakfast room, they were frayed in places.
- Brent (10/5): We’re definitely going back to stay and taking friend - The food was fantastic. The staff exceptional what a little gold mine. The food, the walks the scenery it was sensational
- Susan (10/5): Fabulous! - Room 15. It was spectacular with a terrace and amazing view.
All the staff were brilliant, friendly and welcoming .From reception to housekeeping . Maybe a bit brighter lighting system to get to the restaurant in the dark.
- Nick_R (10/5): - Fantastic location for an overnight break. Fabulous food. The rooms were very clean, comfortable and well appointed.
Lovely stay, recommended for anyone wishing to explore the Tamar Valley or surrounding area. Nothing, everything was perfect.
- Jonathan (9/5): - The location and views were lovely Can't think of anything
- Patricia (10/5): -
- Skee (10/5): This is a beautiful hotel in a stunning location. Staff are exceptionally good - Views are stunning.
- Rebecca (8/5): Lovely country hotel with excellent food - Friendly helpful staff
Nice spacious room with comfortable bed
Lovely views
Good food in the pleasant restaurant which has good acoustics Bad playlist in the restaurant
We had to ask for vegetables with our main courses - which would have just been a plate of meat ( expertly and beautifully cooked though it was)
- Debbie (10/5): - The room was clean and welcoming Something had been added to our bill that we didnt have.
- Mark (10/5): -
- Katherine (10/5): - Beautiful hotel, amazing views from the rooms, very clean and comfortable. The stuff extremely helpful! Hotel restaurant is a delight and well worth the money! Will stay there again for sure!
- Alex (8/5): Nice - Beautiful location The staff that night. Didn't make you feel you could enjoy yourself. We laughed in the bar area and she shushed us. Im.40 years of age being shhhhhhhhh. Didn't like that
- Lorien (9/5): - The staff were great, really friendly and welcoming. Food was exceptional. Views from our room were beautiful. Nothing to dislike
- ELAINE (9/5): -
- Natasha (10/5): -
- David (8/5): Slightly underwhelmed. - Room was spacious , with a really nice bathroom, breakfast was very nice, good views from the dining room. We were expecting a room with a glass wall overlooking a beautiful view, we didn't get this, in fact they only have 2 rooms as pictured on their website, and one of these was out of action. Diner was high quality but for some reason we were limited in our choice of menu, and then discovered that the next table were offered a wider choice of meal. It was a special celebration weekend for us and so we were hoping for top notch, unfortunately we got a couple of notches down from that.
- Caroline (7/5): Adequate - Garden was pretty Tasting menu was dreadful . Overpriced and a mix of flavours that didn’t work . Very slow table service
Poor breakfast service that was not customer friendly
- Silvana (10/5): -
- Alice (9/5): -
- Catherine (10/5): A really great place to stay with gardens and views. - The coach house rooms have an amazing view across the valley; the gardens are lovely The dinner service is quite formal - we liked it, but if you want a casual dinner this won't be the right place for you.
- Gary (10/5): -
- Jonathan (9/5): -
- Julie (9/5): - Donna was incredible
- Sophie (9/5): Beautiful hotel wonderful views, amazing breakfast x - We had a wonderful stay , such beautiful views, amazing breakfast in the morning, very friendly helpful staff. . The room was far too hot , no window to open so had to leave the balcony door open all night , the towel rail couldn’t be turned off .
Bed very very soft
- Timothy (6/5): Will definitely come again. - Great location for our trip and breakfast. Think there was an more "normal" a la carte menu (which we weren't offered) versus the pricey fine dining options.
- Geoffrey (10/5): A pleasant experience all round. Good old fashioned service with a friendly atmosphere. - As evidenced by my ratings above Nothing, was perfect
- Alison (10/5): Exceptional - Absolutely amazing!!!
- Carol (6/5): Basic overpriced accommodation in fabulous location. - Location and views Room in need of redecorating. Signs of damp and flaking paint.
- Kevin (10/5): Comfortable Country House Hotel & Restaurant - A very comfortable country house hotel and restaurant, where they do, their best to meet your needs
- Geoffrey (9/5): Superb - Relaxing atmosphere, great meals and comfortable. Friendly staff.
- Mike (6/5): Beautiful location and accommodation, but questionable value for money? - Beautiful building and location, with large modern rooms in the coach house at the rear of the main house. Comfortable bed and huge, well-equipped bathroom. Breakfast was poor in quality and quantity - bacon overcooked, sausage rubbery and tiny portions of beans l, mushroom and black pudding. Standard supermarket sliced bread used for toast. Don’t match the reputation for good food or the luxury in the accommodation. Service was also a little stiff and formal.
- Mike (10/5): Exceptional -
- Christine (7/5): Good -
- Paul (9/5): Superb -
- Michael (9/5): Worth a visit back. Speaks volumes in itself !! - Ambiance, Friendly Staff, Excellent Food
- Paul (10/5): - Very welcoming staff and special place to stay
- Hywel (10/5): Very comfortable - The views, the garden and the comfort. It's tricky to walk directly from the hotel
- Ian (8/5): Very good -
- william (4/5): - Tired room, shabby in places, tiny balcony that looked over a field was too small to sit 2 people on comfortably, poor vegetarian choice (one only) on the menu, very poor value for money. Breakfast was basic.
Staff were attentive and helpful but the standard and maintenance of the room we had and the pricing structure was not in any way up to a high end experience.
- Alan (7/5): Nice spot, not much to do - Nice period property Needs up dating
- Anthony (7/5): Outstanding food but not a luxury bedroom except for the very good mattress. - All the food was really exceptional. Toast for breakfast made from home made bread was how it should be. Dinner outstanding both creative and delicious and served very well.
The staff were very courteous and helpful - nothing was too much trouble.
The hotel location was perfect. Room 6 was in no way luxurious. In my opinion it needs some kind of carpeting as the floor is cold underfoot (even with HofP slippers), and the bathroom would benefit from some kind of long cotton runner in front of the basins. The room needed bigger pictures or a wall hanging behind the bed, more colourful decor would make it more welcoming and luxurious.
- Justin (9/5): Superb -
- Rose-marie (9/5): Very good Staff attentive , excellent food - Frendlyness
- Marjolein (8/5): Beautiful hotel, fantastic food, beautiful location - We loved staying at this hotel. Romantic hotel with a beautiful view. The dinner was very good and the best porridge I had during our whole stay in the UK. I can definitely recommend the Horn of Plenty, it is worth staying there. nothing
- Eleri (8/5): Very good - Lovely location, food good, lovely rooms, very comfortable and with everything you would need. Staff very friendly and accommodating on the whole. There for a wedding but moved around to make way for other guests. One member of staff unfriendly and quite rude.
- Brian (5/5): Disappointing - The staff were both friendly and helpful The breakfast was . Both the food and the accommodation were considerably overpriced for the standard required. This hotel is certainly not 5 star for the prices charged. We are seasoned worldwide traveler's and know what to expect
- Rosemary (9/5): Superb -
- Darrell (9/5): A very enjoyable short stay - A lovely property in a peaceful country location. Room was spacious, clean and had all the facilities you need. Staff are all very friendly and food/drink was excellent. N/a
- Tim (9/5): Amazing overall with great memories - The location is amazing. The room was lovely with the balcony also. The gardens in the property were beautiful and very well maintained. The food was excellent. The staff on the whole were very friendly and welcoming. The shower was the best ever. Not enough hanging space in our room.
Ended up having to hang evening dresses over a fridge inside a cupboard which smelt slightly due to the fridge
- Carl (10/5): - Evening meal quite expensive. Only limited beers
- Stephanie (7/5): Gorgeous weekend stay in the countryside - The hotel is absolutely stunning. The building itself and the grounds it is located in are so fab. The restuarant was really great and the staff were all lovely. We had a gorgeous weekend here. We accidentally left a multi-plug and charger in our room. I contacted the hotel on various mediums (here, email, phone) the day we left to get it returned to us and received no response.
- Sarah (8/5): A lovely location and a warm welcome! - Lovely peaceful location. Warm greeting from Reception. Clean room with a small balcony to enjoy a glass of wine looking out to the gardens and stunning views. The food was good but the main course portion was very small.
The balcony looked a bit tired and could do with some attention.
- Brett (8/5): - Liked the hotel set in quiet country location, room was spacious and clean with all amenities you would expect. Bed was very comfortable, and excellent power shower although we were informed on check in that the bathroom window was broken and couldn’t be opened.
Both dinner and breakfast were fine on the quality but lacking in quantity; very small portions. Other customers were also commenting on this issue at dinner. Whilst the service overall was ok the service at breakfast was very slow and extra toast ordered was forgotten with the waitress offering a lacklustre apology and we weren’t asked how our stay was at checkout which is something I would expect to be asked after a stay at this type of hotel.
- William (10/5): - Met the owner who was clearly passionate about offering exceptional service! His vision is borne out by the results.
- Paul (10/5): Excellent 3 day gourmet break. Food & facility both first class. - Excellent property that we first visited 10+ years ago. As excellent as we remembered it. Arriving from Cornwall there was no signposting for the hotel actually on the road. It had apparently blown down & not been replaced.
- Robert (10/5): Exceptional -
- Frank (10/5): - Food and room were excellent
- Ann (8/5): Ann - Very comfortable hotel with amazing views
Receptionist when we arrived on Saturday afternoon 8/06 was very hospitable and friendly. . I didn’t take her name but she made our anniversary stay feel very special.
- Estelle (10/5): Special night in the country - Beautiful setting, incredible staff, comfortable rooms -
- Mandy (9/5): Superb - Amazing views restaurant s perfect couples stay
- Mandy (10/5): Exceptional -
- Geoffrey (1/5): Bad - Everything bar the owner, Jeremy. SO Bloody Rude and overstepped my personal boundaries by touching me on my arm without my permission to do so! INNAPPROPRIATE to say the least. He also withheld my refund as requested by my goodself because of the term and conditions laid out in the contract between himself, booking.com and myself. I paid £220 for one night stay at The Horn of Plenty near Tavistock. It is Amazing, however the owner, Jeremy leaves a lot less to be desired. Maybe, dear old Jeremy has to take early retirement and hand the keys to somebody more fitting
to such an establishment, maybe the under manager or the Head Chef. Respect to both of them. Hope to meet you one day. It would be an honor for us all to partake at the HoP! Jeremy
- George (9/5): Superb -
- Dennis (7/5): Unfortunately not as expected - Food was good and the room was comfortable. Unfortunately the whole experience was let down by a simple request at checkout. I had travelled with work and had asked for a VAT receipt. I left the lady on reception my key and details to email the receipt. I was told I would receive it the following week. It never arrived and after several phone calls chasing it I was told they had recently had a new computer system installed and they couldn’t find any records of my visit!
I was then called a few days later to be asked if I was booked in for that week, to which I replied no but was still awaiting a VAT receipt. The lady repeated they had a new computer system installed and their booking system was still a bit messed up. I was assured it was on her list to do, I never received it. I did receive a scanned copy of a piece of paper with my details and room cost written out but it wasn’t what I needed.
I found it very unusual that a hotel cannot provide a VAT receipt on request for those who ask. It’s a shame as it would have been a great review otherwise. I would also have returned as I’m regularly in the area for work but I’ll be booking elsewhere now.
- Chris (10/5): absolutely superb..my sicere thanks to ALL the team rgds Chris Gomez - This has got to be one of the brest places i have stayed in. What makes this place so special, are ALL the people that work there. From the moment you check in with Barbara, Catherine,Donna, and Candice, you can instantly see and feel how proffesional this hotel is.My room was alwaws spotless, the breakfasts superb. - Robert (9/5): Superb -
- Craig (9/5): I would definitely return. - bREAKFAST WAS EXCELLENT. They were very helpful as I needed an early breakfast. The little bottle of Kraken rum was a nice touch in the room. Not decent rum in the main bar.
- John (9/5): Superb - Very friendly staff. Couldn't do enough for us. We got to check in early as our room was ready which was awesome. Beautiful setting. Would have loved to of been there in the summer.
- Mark (8/5): Country hotel in a lovely location - Lovely country hotel Delay between courses that looked great but not a good as we expected
Breakfast ‘full English’ was small
- Terence (7/5): Good - Location is good Breakfast and check out was run by 2 young ladies
Who didn't know how to do the paperwork for check out.
- David (7/5): Good -
- Ruchi (8/5): Brilliant. We lived every minute. - I particularly enjoyed the food and methodical table service. The butter, canapés and crème brûlée was divine. Nothing was stressful. It was all beautifully relaxed and convenient. The food was appropriately priced and the optional light menu was welcomed. The hotel room was slightly costlier than I had anticipated for the size we received but since everything else felt right, I can’t complain😊. The breakfast too was wonderful.
The staff were kind and helpful.
The folder in the room was excellent. Filled with all the relevant information. It appears that someone ?Jeremy has taken a lot of time and effort to provide this helpful information. It would be nice to have some simple maps and leaflets with guidance about quick, easy to reach, local walks and drives, if available, especially as Tavistock information center is closed on Sundays. The complimentary bread was appreciated but multigrain or seeded would be even better.
- Clare (9/5): Exquisite food . Beautiful hotel and surrounding - Amazing food. Room was lovely and spacious.beautiful hotel. Very friendly staff. Room was a little cold. As I don’t think the radiator works. But there was a plug in one which heated it up quick. But had to turn it off at night. So cold in the morning. But no problem turning it on again. A tiny issue. When all was all so good
- Samantha (10/5): 1 night stay - Stayed over for a wedding near by, very friendly, rooms were incredible, quiet and spacious. Definitely stay again!
- David (10/5): - Fantastic location, peaceful and comfortable rooms, delicious and interesting menu. Highly recommended.
- Alison (8/5): Fabulous one night dog friendly stay - Beautiful setting, fabulous it’s dog friendly as we were travelling with our 2 year old black lab. The staff were very helpful, friendly & sorted out a problem with our room very nicely. We didn’t eat dinner so can’t comment on dinner .. we are in Cornish Arms in Tavistock was amazing
- Richard (9/5): Super stay - Just a super place to stay and eat. Along with fantastic views Rain and more rain
- Louise (9/5): The HOP really do set the bar high ! - We are returning guests year on year and it is one of our happy places. The dogs love it and are made to feel very welcome. We are yet to find a more tasty breakfast and have never had a bad dinner here and the view of the Tamar Valley is just incredible ! The only teeny tiny fault is that the complimentary glass of Prosecco with breakfast is no longer available which I always found to be a lovely touch :-)
- Mandy (10/5): Exceptional -
- Robert (9/5): Superb -
- Karen (9/5): Superb - Fabulous service and location Nothing…all good!
- Harding (10/5): Friendly staff excellent service and good quality meals - Facilities good, Staff all polite, friendly and happy Door to coach house could do with a closer being fitted due to being tight and other residents banging it shut when leaving causing vibration in rooms above (coach house) Loo paper tad too hard maybe softer available
