Guest Reviews
- Chris (10/5): Exceptional - A real Italian delight devoid of corporate blandness. Laura was lovely and made sure we had a great stay. There are steps up to the accommodation but they were well lit and had a good hand rail.. The shower room was clean and spacious. Great views from balcony. Easy access by railway via Milan, Paris and London. Excellent double glazing meant our room was very quiet. Thank you Laura! Nothing
- Vere (8/5): lovely setting - we stayed in the cottage which was lovely. the views from the room and balcony were fabulous. room was very comfortable. we loved our stay here nothing
- Kym (7/5): Perfect location! - The close proximity to the ferry and local restaurants was an advantage. The host was friendly, and the bed was comfortable.
Despite being so close to the busy ferry port, the room was quiet. The room had only very basic tea/coffee making facilities and no fridge.
If you're planning on enjoying a sunset view with a bottle of wine from the balcony, bring your own cork screw!
- Greg (9/5): Villa Torretta provided an excellent Varenna experience, from its history, to the wonderful service provided by the owne - Quiet, with a small balcony overlooking the lake, and a great location to get anywhere in Varenna. Nothing
- Barbara (8/5): Very good - No breakfast offered but a good cafe very close.
- Steve (9/5): Superb -
- Daniel (2/5): Very very strange. - Location. Right next to the ferry. Short walk from the station The owner shouted loudly for her cat 20 times at 2am. She stays in the room next to guests and leaves her door open. This is clearly her house and she treats you like an unwelcome guest. It is all very very strange. We felt no privacy whatsoever. The whole setup is very very strange. We communicated well and arrived at 6pm . This seemed far too late for her. She asked if we were going straight to bed because she was. We were out mostly but when asked when we were checking out I suggested 10:30 she said 'no - 10:00'. Which is fine. Her rules. When we arrived back from dinner to a totally dark house we came in very quietly but didn't get past her open bedroom door. She shouted something very loud. We couldn't make it out so enquired numerous times what she was saying. She just kept shouting the same thing. After the 10th shout we realised she was saying '10:30 is ok'. At 10:25 the next day she hammered on our door and shouted 'you must go!'. The location makes you overlook the rediculously worn out towels, sheets, furnishings and coffee facilities in the bathroom etc but doesn't allow for a rude unwelcoming host. If you don't want guests, don't list your property!
- Thomas (7/5): Great walking location. - Property is very well located, walking distance to both the ferry dock, a lakeside walking path to the center of town, and train station. It has a great lakeside and mountain view from the rooms. Electric tea kettle, coffee (instant), tea and sugar were located in the bathroom. Though no meals (this is not a B&B) are provided, prepackaged tea cakes came every day at the coffee station. Property was cold most of the time. Heat (radiator) did not have any controls, and system only came up to temperature a couple times a day.
- Monique (7/5): Good -
- Karen (10/5): Perfect Lake Como experience - Everything! Location, look, feel, comfort, Laura & Lila!
- Benjamin (10/5): Exceptional - Very easy to get to from the train, just walked down the hill. Restaurants downtown were great! Laura was an amazing host, she was readily available and accommodated our special needs. Loved the cottage and highly recommend!
- Stephen (7/5): Great location but my first night experience turned me off - property has a great location and is nicely appointed. lovely balcony to sit on with lovely view. easy to get to from train station First evening got there just after 8 pm and the place was impossible to find in the dark - place was completely dark, no way to read address since no outside lighting . The lady was annoyed that I got there later than 8 and said she would charge me another night’s stay . The next day she was pleasant enough
and didnt charge me.
Place is rather dusty and mold present in bathrooms
no extra pillows or towels.
- Delon (10/5): Can't wait to go back! - Very quiet place with antique decor, very warm and comfortable. Perfect for writers and painters! Very clean and well kept! We stayed in private guest house with a private balcony and an amazing view. Laura is a very charming host. Travel guides should add her as a must-see attraction in Varenna! Highly recommended! Can't wait to go back!
- Valdez (3/5): The facility was neither clean or comfortable - The location It was dirty it did not offer daily linen change.
- Patricia (8/5): Beautiful views of Lake Cuomo convenient to the ferry, train station and many restaurants. - Location was superb! The bed and pillows were not very comfortable.
- Peter (10/5): Perfect Accommodation - The location was perfect. The view was spectacular. The accommodation exceeded out expectation. Didn't like that we were only there 2 nights! Would loved to have stayed longer.
- Steven (9/5): Located with easy access to ferries and restaurants, kind mgnt, delightful room. - The location was excellent, most exactly as advertised by Bookings! . Lovely room, comfortable bed, fantastic balcony. It is a guest house not a hotel. Perfect for oldsters, not for families.
- Antonio (6/5): This is not a Hotel…it is a B&B missing the breakfast. For the price tag we were quite disapointed. - Location is great It is oudated. The property in fact is charming, old, and romantic to a point. Our room had a full face to the sun in the afternon and make it impossible to sit outside to enjoy the view until sundown. Wi fi is very poor. Some mold in the shower, soap and shampoo was in cheap gigantic bottles like you may have in a camping station. Old towels and no toileteries.
- Yang (7/5): Overall experience is good. - The location is really convenient, closed to ferry, the train station and major attraction spots. The AC made noise sound and there was a bug and spiders on the wall.
- Peter (9/5): Superb - A charming period home full of the owner's original furniture and ornaments. We were made to feel at home straight away and the room was nice and cool as the air conditional had been put on earlier. The lake front location was superb and the view from our balcony was fantastic. Parking was a bit hit-and-miss and the house fronts the ferry terminal and parking is in a local authority pay-and-display car park which was full when we arrived so we had to park in the station car park half a mile away
- Mike (8/5): Very good - Great location, easy to access the ferry. very nice property owner excellent view of lake. Varenna is wonderful
- Mark (10/5): It was like you were staying in an old world quest house with your favourite aunt. Beautiful location - Like stepping back in time with a beautifully restored villa
- Cecilia (10/5): Exceptional - Amazing location! Beautiful grounds and views!
- Catherine (9/5): Superb -
- Alan (10/5): Villa Toretta has charming decor, a lovely host, and terrific view in a convenient location. - The location was convenient to the train station and right across from the ferries. Yet it was quiet. The view was lovely, and the room was spacious, with charming decor. Laura was a wonderful host, always happy to provide advice, answer questions.
- Sara (10/5): Exceptional -
- Paul (2/5): Very poor -
- Luke (10/5): The location is amazing with breathtaking views from the balcony room. Laura was very helpful. - The best location in Varenna! Nothing
- Janine (8/5): Fabulous location - Fabulous location with views of the lake from a small balcony. The ferry to Bellagio was literally a few metres away. The room was completely separate from the house and there were lots of stairs to reach it. Not easy with a lot of luggage.
It was seriously outdated but charming. Even the bathroom (which had mouldy tiles!) was still outdated but charming. If you can ignore those things then it’s a great place to stay!
- Margie (7/5): Good -
- Daniel (10/5): The perfect mix of convenience and charm. All that Varenna and the other towns dotted around lake Como have to offer is - Villa Torretta is a charming retreat in a charming village. The view across Lake Como is the perfect way to start and end the day, the ferry is super close and the train station just up the hill. You leave the property and are immediately on the beautiful path around the shore that leads to restaurants and bars.
- Christine (10/5): Exceptional - We loved our stay at Villa Toretta. So elegant and so comfortable and also so quiet at night. Our host was absolutely lovely. So kind, friendly and welcoming, even helped us out with ordering a taxi to the train station on a rainy morning. The room and bathroom were spotlessly clean. .There are many restaurants and shops close by all in a short walking distance The ferries'.. to other towns around Lake Como are literally 60 metres away. You can walk everywhere! We walked from Varenna train station to Villa Toretta on arrival which is downhill and flat when you reach the Villa locale. It's only about at most 15 minutes with suitcases and back packs but quicker if you're travelling light. We will be back for sure! We loved everything about Villa Toretta!
- Bc007 (5/5): Beautiful view but the room is not worth the price per night! - The location is excellent! Beautiful view from balcony room, a 1 minute walk to the ferry, a 15 minute walk with luggage to the train station, and the front door leads to Varenna's restaurants and coffee shops. Laura makes you feel like family! For 200 a night at this guesthouse, I expected higher quality bath towels (not small, poor quality, rough towels), higher end toiletries (not large bottles and cheap brands of soap and no shampoo), a small coffee maker (not instant coffee), one or two bottles of water would have been nice also. Mold in bathroom needs to be removed. Motion activated lighting is needed to go up the stairs at night since the host retires early and all lights are out (I used the flashlight on my phone). The bath mat was wet with small stains and hung over a small stool which gives the impression that the mat was not washed from previous guest. I love antiques but not antique towels and do enjoy some simple luxuries for this price point along with fresh coffee. Breakfast as stated by the owner is not offered.
- David (10/5): Villa Torretta was great. - My wife and I stayed for two nights at Villa Torretta and liked everything. The location, adjacent to the ferry dock, was ideal for our trip to Bellagio, and the footpath outside the front door leads directly to Varenna's many restaurants, attractions, and coffee shops. Best of all is the owner, Laura, who makes guests feels as part of her family. In addition, she is most knowledgeable of all aspects of Varenna, Bellagio, and Lake Como. All was great. We liked everything.
- Mayur (10/5): Exceptional -
- Deborah (10/5): Varenna and Lake Como are remarkably beautiful. We had a wonderful stay and hope to return. - Great location. 10 minute walk to train station. One minute to ferry and beautiful walk along the water. We stayed in the cottage. It was private, roomy and nicely decorated. Large bathroom. Great balcony with a wonderful view of the lake. Laura was a kind and thoughtful host. We were unable to access WIFI. Otherwise everything was great.
- Hazel (8/5): Overall pleasant but more Airbnb than a hotel, very nice hostess, - Location and view of the lake Lack of electric sockets, poor internet connection at times, poor quality towels, cheap toilet paper for the price per night
- Frank (10/5): It was lovely. - It was lovely. It was all great.
- Prashant (10/5): Exceptional -
- Shawna (9/5): Beautiful home in the best location in Varenna, steps from the ferry and lovely waterfront promenade - Perfect location, beautiful historic home, delightful hostess
- Sonia (10/5): Perfect Location with Magnificent Views - Beautiful house with amazing views!
Laura was a fabulous host. A lovely lady, very friendly & helped us with dinner reservations which was very kind.
Appreciated being able to leave our luggage there for a few hours after checkout.
Highly recommend, Varenna was perfect! Nothing.
- Janna (10/5): Exceptional - Our hostess could not have been nicer. She made a dinner reservation for us at a wonderful restaurant. Very friendly and lovely hotel. Looking forward to returning soon.
- Simon (10/5): Exceptional -
- Robert (9/5): Superb -
- Mario (10/5): Great location, a very serene place. Hope to come back again someday. - Location is great!
- Thomas (10/5): incredible location with a great host -
- Philipp (10/5): Exceptional -
- Thomas (10/5): Villa with old world Italian charm with views of the lake - Our hostess was lovely! It was very easy to communicate with her and she went out of her way to make us comfortable. The Villa was charming and our room was great--especially the views of the lake. The table and chairs outside were wonderful to enjoy a glass of wine and the views. The location was perfect --we could easily walk to restaurants and it was so convenient to the ferry to take day trips to Menagio or Bellagio. I would recommend this Villa if you want to experience old world Italian charm.
- Annie (8/5): Very good -
- Anonymous (10/5): The best room in all of Varenna! - The location was perfect! We loved that the room had Kleenex, an electric kettle, and toiletries. We ate breakfast on the balcony each morning. If we ever come back to Varenna, we would love to stay here again. Nothing!
- Victor (8/5): Overall good stay and a very good value - We liked the location on the northern part of Varenna close to the ferry. It was very quiet at night after the last ferry run.
The host was gracious and the room was meticulously clean. It has a much larger bathroom and shower than any other property we stayed in during our 2 weeks in Italy. Bed was comfortable and we enjoyed laying in bed with the balcony doors open. There are a couple of restaurants close by but none of them were open before 9:00 for breakfast or even coffee. The host supplied instant coffee that was better than nothing but we would have preferred an in-room espresso machine. No refrigerator in room so couldn’t have milk/cream for coffee or a way to keep leftovers so we wasted some food over the course of 5 days.
The host retires early in the evening so by the time we got back from supper the house was pitch black. She did say we could turn on the main lights to go up the stairs but we didn’t want to disturb her so we used a flashlight every evening. Some auxiliary lighting, possibly even motion activated, in the stairway would be helpful.
- Ken (8/5): Overall, Villa Torretta is a wonderful place to stay in Varenna, Italy. It offers a combination of c - The location: Villa Torretta is located in the heart of Varenna, a charming village on the shores of Lake Como. It is just a short walk from the village center, with its many restaurants, cafes, and shops. The villa also has stunning views of the lake and the surrounding mountains. The staff: The staff at Villa Torretta is friendly and attentive. They are always happy to help you with anything you need, and they go out of their way to make sure that your stay is enjoyable.
- Charles (9/5): Superb - It is waterfront at one end of the famous Vareena Walk. It is a few steps to the ferry. Excellent restaurants very close.
- Margaret (8/5): Very good -
- Helms (9/5): Loved the views, opening the windows at night - Location, charm Owner Cat and dog (barking).
- Mary (8/5): Very good - There was no breakfast offered. Location was great!
- Sheila (10/5): Fantastic. - Comfortable and location was excellent. The view from the balcony was stunning. Super quiet and very relaxing. Hostess was very accommodating. Everything.
- Boest (10/5): Villa Toretta is stunning and made our stay so memorable and special. Thank you - The view and location were amazing, our host was so kind and accommodating. Knowing how to work the Air conditioner better
- Nicholas (10/5): Wonderful villa in great location - Location and character A lot of stairs
- Harper (10/5): Idyllic hideaway on Lake Como - We absolutely loved our stay with Lina and Alesandro. We were very well taken care of. A gem of a place. Desperate to go back and stay at Villa Lina. Thank you so much. Nothing!
- Rossana (10/5): Our stay was amazing - The location is amazing with views of the water and easy walking to any part of town. Laura, the owner set up transortation from the airport and comunicated beautifully. When I was there, I was unable to schedule a boat trip and Laura made a few calls and was able to get me on a sailboat with one of her friends, Massiomo which was a highlight of our trip!
- Doug (9/5): Beautiful location in a beautiful old stately villa - highly recommend - Location, grand property, friendly host N/a
- John (9/5): Superb -
- Russell (9/5): Superb - Location was fantastic and host was lovely.
- Denise (9/5): Superb - Historic villa, fabulous location, welcoming hostess and a rare experience Nothing
- Jorge (8/5): Guest at traditional Italian house. Unique experience. - Is like being guest at traditional Italian house. The room are spacious and decorated with antique and vintages. Has beautiful lake view. Convenient, with ferry just few steps. Laura is very friendly . Is constructive suggestion, if can renew the vime seat cushion. I know is clean and vintage. But will change the room look if updating.
- Gavin (9/5): Lovely stay - Awesome location.
- Anonymous (10/5): Exceptional - The best thing about this accommodation is its vibe. It is truly an Italian villa, not some generic hotel. I had a feeling I was staying in a museum, surrounded by unique pieces of art and vintage furniture. Villa’s owner - Laura - is amazingly hospitable and nice. It was a real pleasure talking to her.
- Mark (9/5): Superb - Location
View
- Mirela (10/5): Exceptional - Perfect location with such a lovely host!
- Gavin (8/5): Good location but expect noise from the ferry and carpark - The location is close to the ferry terminal but expect it to be noisy. The host is very accommodating and the balcony is lovely for afternoon drinks There is no in room fridge for afternoon cool drink and the air conditioner so very noisy and will not cool in July. Luckily we had a cool breeze come through the shutters
- Michael (8/5): Very good -
- Irina (4/5): Only slightly warm water; no shower gel, no shampoo, please note that it is not easy to buy these things in varenna. The - Thé location is superb. The house itself is nice. Only the location
- Deb (10/5): A perfect stay villa in beautiful Varenna - Location was fantastic
Villa was gorgeous
Laura was very pleasant Nothing I didn’t like
- Laylee (10/5): Very relaxing. Host was attentive without being overly so. - Right in front of where the ferries come and go, an easy downhill walk from the train station (until you return) and a beautiful lakeside path into town. We had a nice sized terrace with a full view of Lake Como. Italian pillows are hard and flat.
- Samantha (6/5): Pleasant -
- Brennan (10/5): Exceptional - Location
Views from balcony
Charming house
- Leela (7/5): Incredible location, dated room, unpleasant interactions with the host. - The location was incredible- the room and balcony overlook the lake. It was a quick walk to several restaurants and attractions (the ferry, boat rental companies, and more). Although the furnishings I’m the room were quite dated, everything was clean and very comfortable. We had some difficulties with the host, Laura. The check-in time is listed as 1pm, and checkout time is listed as 10am. She asked what time we planned to check out, and we estimated around 9am. On the day of our departure, we were running a little later than expected. She entered our room using a master key without knocking at 0920, which scared both of us (my husband was in the shower and I had just changed into my outfit for the day). She demanded to know why we hadn’t checked out at 9, asked me to pay the city tax, and then said just to leave our key in the door upon our departure.
We have never had an experience like this before, whether at a hotel, an Airbnb, a VRBO, or a location on Booking.com. Our privacy was violated by her entering the room without knocking or asking.
- Kerry (9/5): Italian Villa with Magnificent View - This guest house is more like staying with an Italian family- Very authentic Villa loaded with antique treasures. A magnificent marble staircase lead us up to our room. our view and balcony were sensational The ferry is across from the Villa so it can get quite noisy - although it’s grey for people watching
- Abby (7/5): Overall a very good stay. Some things to improve but would stay again. - Loved the little balcony with nice view, great to sit out and have a drink/snacks and people watch. Close to everything especially the ferry. Very comfy bed. Laura is lovely and welcoming. Only a sheer curtain in the room means the lights that stay on overnight at the ferry port beam straight into the room. Fine if you wear an eye mask or aren’t bothered by light to sleep but it’s pretty bright. As per photos, it’s interior design is old. This didn’t bother us but it would bother those who want modern aesthetics.
- Dianna (9/5): Convenient location, beautiful view, friendly owner, a little dated, but still comfortable. - Location was great! Very convenient location in Varenna. Laura, the owner, was very friendly and helpful, especially when assisting us to get a taxi to catch our departing flight. I especially liked having a balcony with a view. The direct train to the town has been out (due to landslides) for a couple of weeks prior to our stay, but we did not not know about it until the morning we were heading to Varenna. The ferry situation in Como was mess because of all the travelers that were trying to get to from Varenna, Bellagio and Menaggio. Had to wait in ferry line for over 2 hours in the sun (because the you can't buy tickets for the express ferry online), only to find out many trips were already sold out, and then we took a the last 3 hour ferry in to Varenna. Just wish we had been informed. I would have taken a taxi as soon as we got out of the Como train station, so we wouldn't have missed most of the day trying to get there.
- Natasha (7/5): A charming retreat. - Great location, incredible view from room, flexible checkin, welcoming host and charming property.
- Lisa (9/5): Superb - perfect location
- Maokoo (10/5): Exceptional - Thanks for the owner, Laura. The train service stopped due to land slide and we faced difficulty in reaching and leaving Varenna. Difficult to catch a taxi to leave Varenna to Lecco for onward train to Milano. Laura was kind enough to order a taxi for us. Clean and quiet room. Excellently located very close to the pier - good when raining. Check out time is some 10 a.m. which is quite early.
- Michael (9/5): Superb -
- James (5/5): Definitely not a 9+ rating. - The location is excellent. An old property. Should never have been rated above a 7.5 overall on Booking.
- David (10/5): Exceptional -
- Cecilia (9/5): serenity - view staircases
- Nishkala (10/5): Exceptional -
- Craig (9/5): Superb -
- Ruei-horng (8/5): Nice view and great location - The location is very good. It is a 5 to 10 minutes walk from the train station. The property is by the ferry station and overlook the lake. The balcony provided a nice view of the lake. Walking out of the property is the famous Varenna's Passeggiata degli Innamorati (Walk of lovers). The space of the room is a little bit small and no refrigerator provided. The furniture (table, chair, drawer) are outdated. In and out of the room requires passing through owner's living area. You do lose those hotel relaxing atmosphere while living at this house.
- Douglas (10/5): Exceptional -
- Richard (9/5): Superb -
- Nickolas (9/5): Superb -
- Lynn (9/5): A charming home with lovely furnishings. Friendly owner who lives there with he dog and 92 mother. -

- Salinrat (10/5): Exceptional -
- Lisa (8/5): Highly recommend staying at Villa Torretta. - We loved our room. The balcony was picture perfect.
Everyone was welcoming and very helpful. Varenna is like a ghost town in winter. No restaurants or attractions open.
it was still great fun exploring the Lake side towns without the crowds.
- Peter (10/5): A beautiful place to stay in Varenna and explore lake Como - Location was excellent. 10 minute walk from train station. ferry to Bellagio 1 minute away. Authentic Italian Villa , beautifully furnished. Laura was the perfect host and very accomodating. Would highly recommend a visit.
