- James (10/5): A comfortable and cozy place with a lovely traditional Japanese aesthetic. - Great atmosphere and a cool location. They even went above and beyond and mailed me my necklace that I left behind! A great place to stay and close to a subway as well! Shower room needs updating
I was unable to receive the letter & key that were supposed to be left for me, and there was absolutely no communication for two days. In the end, I never received the key from the beginning until the last day. I also could not tell which bed was mine, and two kind foreigners helped me with the code to enter the front door. I am grateful to those two people.
Thank you very much.

- Ewa (5/5): - Good location. Japanese-style room. Good size. Very dusty. No staff to interact with.

- Urvisha (8/5): Good Machhiya Stay in Kyoto - A nice stay at a traditional house close to stations, cafes, shopping, kimono rentals and shrines. Free morning rice porridge prepared by the host is also Halal/ Muslim friendly. There is no staff at the reception all the time and it's all self-check in and checkout. Communication is only via booking.com (which is also very slow, longer wait for response) or when the person comes at around 11-1 pm to do some preparations and cleaning.
- Asuka (10/5): -
- Ethan (10/5): Quiet, calm, central, historic - Beautiful old building. Walkable to anything but tucked away in my favorite quiet neighborhood. The room was spacious and soft beds. Common area creates a good communal feel. Nothing
- Paula (7/5): - It was very cozy, it looked very nice and cozy. in the dorms, you have two different beds, one to hang out and another one to sleep. You get free congee in the morning and everything was quite clean To be honest everything was good except the beds, I couldn't fall asleep because the beds were very dusty and I have a dustmite allergy. So, I sneezed for 30+ minutes. (sidenote: only 1 shower and the toilet is outside)
- Aditya (8/5): - Toilets could use more ventilation, and the AC in my room didn't work very well.

- Anita (10/5): - It was perfect! The place is magical and sooo traditional, the check-in and checkout procedure is convenient and easy, location is perfect. There is also rice pudding as free breakfast 😍
- HUA HUI (9/5):

- Olivia (10/5): Unique and traditional - We loved our stay here so much - it was unique and traditional. There was a sudden drop in temperature when we arrived in Kyoto but our room was cosey with a complimentary flask of tea and a heater. We loved the Tatami mat floors and futon beds and rice pudding in morning. We also loved that it was next to a station. We rented electric bikes from down the road and can highly recommend this but the hotel also offered some regular bikes. They have a nice system to keep communal shower clean etc. (there is only one which might be problem for people in a rush ?) everyone staying there was respectful and friendly and i would definitely stay there again.
- serikbolsyn (4/5): Cute experience but very cold room with no sound isolation; no staff to address issues. - The ryokan is in a great location. It's not far from metro stations.
There were clear instructions for using the space.
I liked the cute decor & interior elements in the room and the whole ryokan--great way to experience Japanese traditional housing. The room we got was right at the entrance--literally next to the reception, so we heard every step others made, their loud convos, and the sound of their luggage, etc.
The "walls" (if you can call them so; they're made of paper?) had no insulation and the room had no heating although we visited in late October! My friend and I got a bit sick after the first night... Be ready to freeze at night...
There was no staff we could reach out to resolve the temperate issue. They didn't have any staff at all both days we stayed there.
- Dario (8/5): - Nice rooms toilets are outside
- Yassine (8/5): -
- Ellie (10/5): - Really nice Japanese style house. Had all you could need and was clean. Great location. Really nice sized room for two people. Hot drinks were provided free of charge. And rice for breakfast (first come first serve) Nothing
- Maxence (7/5): -
- Capucine (10/5): -
- Katarzyna (10/5): Great location and cool japanese design. Will stay again in the future. - Great location (a 30-minute walk from the furthest attraction, Kiyomizu-dera; the rest are only a short walk away), quiet and peaceful part of Gion. There are plenty of places to eat (even a McDonald's for breakfast if you get tired of 7-eleven sandwiches).
The hostel itself is nice and very traditional, which was my goal. There is a self check-in - they leave an envelope with your name next to the door. I had no problems with the logistics of the hostel or finding my room. There are probably four rooms in total, which meant I never had to wait in line for the restroom or shower. Plus, there are extra sinks for brushing teeth, etc. In the morning, I could use the traditional common room on the ground floor, which was accessible to everyone. The kitchen is also available. Bring earplugs. Traditional Japanese rooms have paper walls, so you can hear every rustle from the room next door. Generally, hotel guests in such places are very quiet, but if you're a poor sleeper like me, earplugs are a must.
- Hendrik Heimes (4/5): - Location is convenient. Has a nice common area. It's cheap. It's advertised as and old traditional japanese home and it seems like this fact is used as an excuse for a lack of care for the property. We stayed in similar old japanese guesthouses in other areas of japan that had similar concepts, and this one was by far the worst. It is quite run down and dirty for japanese standards (e.g. one of our futons had bloodstains on it). Also, it is not soundproof at all, you literally hear everything from the neighbouring rooms. Towels come with an extra rental charge. Toilet area not very clean and the backyard is not well kept. Luggage storage is done by just dumping it near the entrance. Technically, anyone could walk in as the keycode information of the front door is in an unlocked box outside on the street. If you want to have the experience of staying in a traditional japanese house and are not fortunate enough to travel beyond the main tourist cities you can give it a try for a night maybe.

- Laura (4/5): Idea buona ma solo quello - La posizione era ottima Tutto.
Piccolo,sporco, scomodo.
Zero privacy o quasi
I materassi gialli macchiati di ogni cosa.
- Arnold (9/5): -
- Liliana Dodokova (10/5): - The location was amazing! Situated right in the heart of one of the prettiest neighborhoods, on a lovely street — and surprisingly quiet. Just a 10-minute walk from our favorite part of Kyoto, and within walking distance to all the main sights (Kiyomizu area, Philosopher’s Path, and very close to Yasaka Shrine).
The self check-in process was very smooth, and we had no issues leaving our luggage there both before check-in and after check-out.
Thank you!!

- Moritz (8/5): Super Base für Erkundungen in Kyoto - Schönes altes Haus, gemütliche Futons, cooler Vibe Keine wirkliche Kommunikation mit dem Gastgeber / niemand vor Ort
- van hollebeke (8/5): Great value for the price and nice location - The atmosphere was cozy and traditional japanese style. The room was very basic but comfortable. Most things had english instructions. It was as clean as an old building like that can be. I didn't expect anything fancy for the price, and it wasn't but met our needs. The location near the gion area was nice for walking around the night we arrived. We stumbled on a beautiful botanical garden we hadn't planned on (don't remember the name). There is a train station and bus stop close by. Also, this wasn't an issue for us and not a complaint, but hopefully helpful if deciding to book. This isn't the place if you have limited mobility because the stairs are extremely steep, and you need to tiptoe around because you can hear everything. The bathrooms are downstairs, and the rooms are upstairs. Also, it's not the place if you want to socialize as everything can be heard across rooms. Most things had english instructions, but I couldn't find anything on the laundry machine, only that it was available and gave a price for using it that specified it included laundry soap. I couldn't find any soap, and the buttons were in japanese so ended up not using it. Some english instructions on the laundry procedure would have been nice. It wasn't a big deal not to have it, but I had planned on it because I saw that it was available. There is a laundry mat less than a block down the road.

- Mark (1/5): Uncomfortable & dirty - don't stay here - Concept of hotel was good, but run down and uncared for My stay at HARUYA Higashiyama was deeply disappointing and far below expectations for a hotel in such a culturally rich area. The room was noticeably unclean, with visible dirt and grime in corners and on surfaces. The sheets and mattresses were soiled, with stains that made sleeping uncomfortable and unhygienic. The overall condition of the hotel was run-down, with clear signs of neglect and poor maintenance—peeling paint, creaky floors, and outdated fixtures.
To make matters worse, the reception was completely unmanned upon arrival, leaving guests to fend for themselves. They had the audacity to request passport details be left at the unattended desk, which felt incredibly insecure and unprofessional. Additionally, the room charge didn’t even include the room tax, which we were expected to leave separately in cash, adding to the inconvenience.
The mattresses were old, lumpy, and terribly uncomfortable, making it impossible to get a good night’s sleep. The blankets were also dirty, with an unpleasant odor that further soured the experience. To top it all off, the air conditioner was uncontrollable, either blasting freezing air or shutting off entirely, leaving no middle ground for comfort.
Overall, HARUYA Higashiyama failed to deliver on basic standards of cleanliness, comfort, and service. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a pleasant stay in Kyoto.
- Gunnar (7/5): Good -
- Zajac (7/5): Lovely traditional house - The hostel is in a beautiful passage and in a quiet location. It's a lovely old building with a relaxing atmosphere. It's a bit tricky to get upstairs to the sleeping rooms. Very steep stairs are quite typical in Japan, but if you have mobility issues, you might struggle. It's also not ideal if you're carrying a lot of luggage.
- Ruth (10/5): Excellent! - Eveything. Bit struggled to find the place but it was not very difficult.
- Elisseev (9/5): Reasonable price, comfortable location, nice stay, thank you!! - Enjoyed my stay here 🙏🏼
The location is pretty good, 15-20 min’ walk from the crowded area, and also close to some of the know temples.
There is a kitchen, and every morning after 6 AM there is a nice rice porridge ready (but limited and not enough for everybody), for free.
There’s a washing machine but I used the one that’s 1 min’ walk from the hostel and it’s pretty great. There are 2 bathrooms downstairs (outside) and 1 shower. I never had to wait luckily so it was fine.
Stayed in the mixed room and we were only 2 people there which was really awesome !! And each had its own extra space for reading/working.
There are 4 bicycles if I remember correctly that you can rent.
It’s possible to leave luggage after check out (not sure for how long).
You can pay to use towels if you need.
It was clean except underneath the thin mattress (many hairs and dust).
The area is quiet.
There is a metro line just 2 min’ from the hostel which was very helpful.
Thank you!!! 🙌🏼🥰 The WiFi was not good, many problems with it and I wasn’t the only one experiencing it, no staff at the property so couldn’t speak to anyone (there is a phone but no one answered).
Not vacuumed properly underneath the mattress (I thought it was part of the blanket so accidentally saw it).
- Victoria (6/5): - The property does not look like that pictures on Expedia. The mats you sleep on on the floor are thin, other hostels i have been to have not been like this. The bathroom is outside but kept clean, down a VERY steep flight of stairs which was not great. The shower was clean. Breakfast included means rice porridge made in a crock pot situation left there all day to harden, cleaned out and then more is made. There is ZERO staff present if you have any problems. The ceiling has visible rain damage but it rained bad when we stayed and rain did not come inside. Also the door is a sliding door and it doesn’t fully shut, tiny crack so people can see inside. Wasn’t the worst but would not pay for it again.
- Graham (10/5): Exceptional -
- Emilia (9/5): Superb - Very cosy hostel with own, traditional rooms. It's an old, historical building (hence the walls are thin and stairs deep but this is described in the info) with cute atmosphere. Friendly staff and nice common area. Walking distance to Gion. Only one shower, and toilets only on the first floor (rooms are on the second floor), although understandable because it's an old building.
- Igoraway (9/5): Superb - I liked the experience of living in Japan 100 years ago.
- Thi (8/5): - Value for money. Close to soooo many things
- Timmy (10/5): Traditional style, nice! - Traditional japanese style room with matresses on the floor. Big room! Cool place, would go again!
- Ariane (6/5): Einfaches Zimmer, relativ sauber, in Ordnung.
- Andrea__pacini (8/5): Old time experience in Kyoto - Perfect position, great quality/price ration, nice common spaces, and amenities (bicycles, washing machine, kitchen).
Fantastic old structure that gives you a true "old time accommodation" experience.
Room are big and we'll furnished.
Instructions clear Bathroom only at ground level, bikes are cheap but need maintenance, and the staff was quite slow to reply in case of questions
- Sebastien (8/5): Kyoto traditional house stay - Small house East (best) side of Kyoto, it's is a small shopping street and I found the location excellent to go anywhere. Its an experience to stay in such building and also very good value for money. However, it come with the traditional houses' features including a complete lack of sound proofing. Bring hearplugs and stay quiet at night for the other guests. Was totally worth if for the price but set your expectations accordingly.
- Grace (1/5): felt like I was sleeping in the street - I HAD TO BOOK EMERGENCY ACCOMMODATION. I felt so unsafe I immediately booked new accommodation elsewhere. The residence has the pin to enter the building permanently accessible via the mailbox that anyone on the street is free to open/find at all times. I sent 2 separate messages to the host via booking.com (prior to my stay and during) and received no response. I booked the private room available on the first floor and I understand it is a hostel and an old historic building but the room facing the street which is a publicly accessible arcade with incredible thin walls. Anyone on the street can see your shadow inside and vice Versa. Anyone entering the building is practically entering the private room (I’m talking you could have a conversation via whisper and hear each other clearly).. same goes for the wall between the room and the street. The other guests staying upstairs were lovely but I cannot understate how unsafe the building felt. This is coming from someone that has lived in my fair share of dodgy sharehouses in Melbourne that do not meet regulations so my standards are LOW. A hostel is a hostel but for this price and a seperate room I was livid. Either book a hotel and you’ll at least get a towel without having to pay a fee or go to a different hostel. The door and lock on the private room was very flimsy and at one stage during the night some guests checked in an understandably tried to enter my room because it was dark but petrified me alone nonetheless. Normally wouldn’t care but just to add, there was rubbish in the cupboards as well. BOOK ELSEWHERE.
- Verified traveler (6/5): -
- Adrian (8/5): An experience but just if you don't mind sharing it - La casa es de estilo antiguo japonés Necesita algo más de mantenimiento. Hay partes de la casa deterioradas.
- Makinson (10/5): Exceptional - Amazing location and beautiful space. Absolutely great value for money, it's definitely not luxury, but for the price it's incredible. I'd definitely stay there again!
- Chris (8/5): Very good -
- Samanta (6/5): Pleasant - The Japanese style A weird and constant smell upstairs and a strange noise coming and going.
- Charlene (6/5): Pleasant - It was a beautiful old house
The price was unbeatable It's very old and needs to be updated, the stairs were very rickety, I was worried I'd break them and they made a lot of noise
The shared bathroom was on another floor, I felt like I'd wake people up going to the bathroom
- Alexandria (10/5): Great experience in a traditional Japanese ho - It was a beautiful traditional Japanese home, such a great experience especially if it’s your first time visiting Japan/Kyoto. The walls are pretty thin so you can hear the people in the other rooms but honestly for the price and the experience of staying in a 100 year old Japanese home, it really didn’t bother us at all. Also, everyone was very respectful and stayed relatively quiet as per signs to respect within the hostel.
- Blas (9/5): Perfect acommodation for young travelers in a budget - The hostel was really close to everything, specially to the old Kyoto. The zone was peacefull and it has a lot of stores for late snacks or similar. The metro was also really close by. About the facilities it was nice to sleep on a futon and be in a traditional tatami room. Of course, the price was really good and my opinion you´re geeting what you´re paying.
For me It was a nice experience but I would not repeat the hotel if I come back to Kyoto. I notice that the room needed some deep cleaning (roftop and upper part of the walls) but for me it was not a big deal. It was lacking some fresh air at some moment (we open our door to fix it). The main area (where the recepcionist would be, because there isn´t one) had many items that needed to be removed from there to avoid generatin this "lack of order". You can heard the other guest (is an old house!) but we had luck and everyone respected the silent hours ;)
- Heather (7/5): Good -
- Monika (2/5): Very poor - Location only Old, dirty house, with toilet and bathroom outside, dangerous stairs!
- Rueben (1/5): AVOID AT ALL COSTS - Good location close to subway Unclean, very very uncomfortable, bed gave me bed sores. Room is so small it is only enough space for 1 person despite being a double room. No staff available at anytime and after 4 days still have not replied to messages. No towels included and a cost of 10,000 yen to use. Very steep stairs are not suitable for many people and difficult to get luggage up. Toilets were not clean and are outside. Shower had mould. Room had cobwebs and mould. Heating was not adequate and the blankets did not make up for it. Blanket was not even in a doona cover. For the price you are much better off getting something closer to the centre. Hotels are a similar price per night. You can hear people rolling over in their bed next door because the walls are very thin. Do not be fooled by the 'traditional 100 year old house' it is not worth it. We had to leave and find another accommodation due to how bad this accommodation was. BE WARNED!!!
- Tran (8/5): Very good -
- N (6/5): Pleasant -
- Raivis (10/5): Exceptional - Excellent location, great price. The dorm room has only two beds. Everything is clean. The old style of the house is very cosy and attractive. The host let me check a few hours earlier than the stated time.
- Christopher (4/5): I was hoping to talk to someone and was lucky that my luggage was not heavy - I was lucky to have good bunk mates to assist me I was shocked to find out there are no one incharge unlike their other branches
- Anton (8/5): Very good -
- Kohji (7/5): Good -
- D.n.s. (10/5): Peaceful. - Old world charm. Good for solitude.
- Katarina (2/5): Exceptionally dirty room and non-existing communication - Good location, nice building that could have been lovely if it had been properly looked after The hostel proudly states that it was built over a hundred years ago and by the looks of it this was also the last time our room was properly cleaned. We stayed in the Japanese-Style Twin Room and there were thick layers of dust covering large parts of the room including most surfaces, the AC vent (so much so that we didn't want to risk using it and potentially make matters even worse) and the numerous large cobwebs hanging from the walls and ceiling - we're talking old forgotten attic in a Spielberg movie levels of dust. There were also stains and black mold on the walls and the bathroom was generally quite grimy (same goes for the shared shower room). We tried contacting the hotel several times, messaging them via booking.com and calling and still haven't heard back from them more than two weeks after the stay. Would never make a fuss if it had been just a little dust in the corners, but this room was straight up unsanitary and I wouldn't set foot there again.
- David (8/5): Price-quality very good - The environment, the silence, the facilities like rent a bike and self checkin checkout. They changed my second night in a another hotel.
- Luca (10/5): Amazing stay! Strongly recommend - Everything, cozy and comfortable Didn’t get it was an hostel, but there was no problem with that
- Ciara (9/5): Enjoyable- I would book again! :) - Gorgeous traditional house in a great location in Kyoto. There was self-check in but staff were helpful with any issues I had. Shower and toilets were really clean, with clothes washing facilities. Just a note for individuals with mobility issues- the stairs are very steep and are difficult to bring luggage up and down. Not necessarily something the owners can do about as the house is authentic and original but just bear this in mind before booking.
- Noel (8/5): - Awesome to stay on a century old, traditional building, the place is clean overall, but it would have been nice to see a staff.
- Francis (10/5): Exceptional -
- Anna (6/5): Pleasant - Close to family mart. Not too far from sanjo station and bus station was close by. Was dusty. Could've used a wipe down on surfaces and a deeper clean in communal areas.
- Waylon (9/5): Superb -
