Guest Reviews
- Saul (8/5): - El desayuno no me gustó mucho
- Miriam (10/5): - Hermoso lugar
- Evelyn (6/5): - It has nice views of San Cristobal. The room #2 which was the room I got was big. But my only concern was that it smell a lot of humidity. The shower of the main room specially the hot water did not work and it makes a lot of noise. Luckily it had another bathroom that it work perfectly. Great staff and very helpful.
- Daniel (8/5): - Camas no tan cómodas
- Jose Marco Antonio (2/5): - A escribí y no me respondieron no utilice habitación porque nadie me podía entregar llave solicito devolución
- MARIA DEL SOCORRO (10/5): - Fabuloso!
- Oscar Ramon (10/5): - Muy bien
- Shannon (8/5): Beautiful rooms, spacious, clean, and close to everything. - The location was great. Everything in the town of SC is walkable. It was about a 15-20 minute walk from where the shuttle from Tuxla dropped us. It was a little chilly during the nights in the rooms (it was late February when we visited), but there was a space heater in the room which helped somewhat.
- Anita (6/5): - This is a unique hotel. The pros are the daytime staff, Rolando, and Oscar. It is clean and offers a spacious room. This hotel could be so much more if they had a refrigerator or coffee pot in the room. If they had a guard rail coming down the stairs as if you’re on a higher floor, it would be very treacherous, there is a restaurant upstairs in fact above the unit we stayed in, but no one told us that . it would have great views the bed was very comfortable. It is not far from the walking streets of the town, but it is up here so coming back you do have to walk up here and know where you are walking to.
- Selina (6/5): Not what I expected - Good location Breakfast extremely limited, there are only two options available. Very cold rooms, only one heater available for two bedrooms since a second one would cause a power shortage according to the staff. Very little hot water in the showers. The restaurant is very loud sometimes until late at night. I think there are much better options in San Cristobal in the same price range.
- Rubi Arlet (6/5): Hotel tranquilo.
- ms_cm9 (8/5): Amazing staff and location. Very clean. A bit dated but nice. The food at restaurant is yummy and authentic. - Highly recommend. Affordable and nice. We Loved how clean it is. Very friendly and kind staff. Great authentic food at small restaurant. Great location, you can walk to all the sightseeing location. You can hear marimba playing at night from plaza.
- Raul (10/5): Disturbing - The hotel was great beautiful but the stairs to room was really bad no hand rails and steep had to move to a different hotel and pay again after one night stay there were no refunds then had a problem with my pay for my taxi it was 100 dollars cash as the reception person David told me that cab driver expected in cash and when i arrived i was chargered an aditional 120 dollars which hotel told me was given to reciption person David then a day before my leaving David told me taxi wanted and additnal 1500 peso almost another 100 dolars now cab was going to run almost 300 dollars when i complained to David as to why i got no response i notified both hotels and was told that was not right something was going on and not to pay i was being hustled because of being american new hotel said fee should only be 120 round trip when i told David the receptioist i had informed both hotels he sneed upset and told me that hotel was going to pay the bal??? I was told to report to you as so dud the cab driver which said he never asked for such thing and he never recieved the 220 dollars in the end i ended paying 2 cab drivers as new hotel was concerned me taking the cab David was having me picked up and to prevent any danger not take hes cab not sure what he was doing but maybe somone should look into cab driver said if i dont complain this person might be doing this to many and noone has complained and he needed to be stoped cab driver was going to complain to his company so they knew what was going on so that was not a good experience so for that i dont think i will be using booking.com anymore other then that my experience at new hotel was amazing. As i wrote only thing was me being husteled by hotel employee which hotel seemed to say they had no idea so it seems employees can do as they want and hotel has no knlowedge of its employees and your sending people there?
- Patricia (5/5): love the place but I had a hard time breathing in the room due to the smell and humidity in the rooms. - location the bad smell of the rooms and the humidity in them.
- Anastasia (9/5): Best view of the city! - Amazing place! Big rooms with nice view. Every apartment has terrace with best view of the city and nice sunrises! Staff is very nice and welcoming! Good breakfast menu. location is very central, a lot of restaurants nearby.
- Alexis (8/5): Very good -
- Chloe (8/5): Beautiful suite and views but a tad cold - - The rooms were very spacious with lovely adjoining showers and bathrooms with hot water
- The terraces that were attached to each property were lovely in the morning sun
- Able to borrow a yoga mat for my own practice
- Very clean - It was very cold at night and although there was a heater you couldn’t sit around in the living area without having lots of layers on. also colder inside during the day than outside
- We arrived at 8am after a night bus and were told check in was 3pm. We came back at 1:30pm and were still told 3pm (was kind of system says no) rather than actually checking whether our room could be ready (often when you arrive super early they try to make space) and there appeared to be no other guests in the hotel?! Unfortunately there was no comfortable area to wait, so we went back out and sat in the park.
- Jessica (10/5): Unexpected gem roof top terrace - The views from the room were so beautiful! The living room area was excellent for my family to enjoy a place to relax in while being together. The rooftop terrace was unexpected and incredible views for sunrise and sunset! We had coffee from the restaurant at the hotel and they were very kind to bring it to the rooftop for us. Staff was very friendly and welcoming, they were helpful in finding a doctor for my mom. I would highly recommend, the pictures don't do it justice!
- James (9/5): Staff communication isn't great - Location is only a short walk to the town center and the rooms are spacious You need to pay extra if you want milk in your coffee for the "included" breakfast. We tried to contact staff for 3 days before our arrival to advise a change in our arrival date and they just ignored us
- JUAN CARLOS (10/5): - Amplio, limpio y comodo muy recomendable
- Garcia (10/5): Exceptional -
- Aida (6/5): Pleasant -
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great staff and hotel was safe.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great location and service. Friendly staff. Can be a bit damp in the month of July. Otherwise, the rooms have plenty of blankets for warmth.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Excelentw - Muy buena experiencia.
- Corinne (8/5): Great place - We sure enjoyed our stay. It was a friendly welcome and they assisted us with our bags to our room. Real attention to detail is a highlight at this hotel. Flowers in the room, a nice greeting on the TV screen, a warm welcoming letter. The restaurant had good food, service and the staff was always helpful. We slept in a big comfortable bed in a nice peaceful environment. It was all good. We wouldn't hesitate for one minute to return there.
Dice tener estacionamiento y no te permite utilizarlo.
- Julio (10/5): - Iris and the staff is really nice and make you feel welcome and at home! I really enjoyed the upgrade, the amenities, but specially their warm and kind service!
- clarke (6/5): Hotel workout - No phone no heat and miles of stairs
- Graciela (10/5): Escaleras - It was great close to everything easy walking around and a very friendly staff.....
- Verified traveler (10/5): - This place was sparkling clean and the staff members were friendly and attentive. Rooms are very spacious and comfy. This place is close to the main walking areas in San Cristobal. I would definitely recommend this place. Notice that it does not have parking on site. Finding parking lot it’s not that easy but it is not impossible either. I parked on the street.
- Elizabeth (4/5): Rude Host!!! - The gentleman who assisted us during our check-in process was extremely rude and harsh. Was bothered when we asked for extra towels. Loved the hotel! Hated his service!
- Maria (10/5): - Very nice and comfortable hotel. Great customer service
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Excelente lugar
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The staff were super helpful and friendly. Would definitely come here again.
- David (10/5): Chiapas San cristobal de las casas - Staff is simply great!!! They Make you feel at home🙂. Clean rooms and amazing views. Will definitely go back😍
- Luis (6/5): - Bueno:Su personal amable
- cavedodger (10/5): Perfect boutique hotel with panoramic views of San Cristobal - So happy to have found this lovely hotel.
From the moment we stepped off the ground transportation we were made to feel welcome, like coming home. There are so many wonderfully well thought out details that I am sure I will forget to mention many of them.
As the name suggests, this is very much a vertical layout with the rooms set either side of a long stair leading ever higher up the side of the hill – and far from being a problem, this is the features that ensures that every single room has spectacular views of picturesque San Cristobal de las Casas. And after sampling so much delicious local cuisine, we were glad for the exercise involved in reaching our incredibly spacious rooms.
We stayed in #11 but had friends in other rooms including #7. The entrance to #11 is via the living room featuring a large sofa (with pullout if required), a fireplace (sadly not in use due to air-quality rules) and an enchanting little balcony, an ideal spot for a morning coffee or evening glass of wine or mezcal…
Up from there you find a smaller full shower-room and then through another door to the master-suite, featuring a huge comfortable king-size bed in a wood floored bedroom as well as a very large bathroom with an excellent shower. We found the water to be piping hot which in San Cris is a blessing during the cool evenings and mornings.
The panoramic views down over the tiled rooftops to the center of San Cris are mesmerizing and the particular view of the cathedral framed by the rooms on either side of the stairs when coming down to breakfast is now firmly fixed in my memory.
The little lobby, reception area is lovely and features many thoughtful touches. We particularly liked the little candles which each guest can set into the stone wall, reminiscent of an altar.
The on-site restaurant is not only a great convenience but also a real treat. As in all aspects of Las Escaleras the service is attentive and friendly, the coffee hot and delicious. During our four-night stay we sampled virtually the entire breakfast menu and the omelets topped our list of favourites with the chilaquiles a close second.
Smiles abound at Las Escaleras, although with the protocols in place for the Covid-19 including facemasks, those lovely smiles were often hidden but reflected in the sparkling eyes of the mask-wearer.
And speaking of protocols, we were all so impressed by the levels of sanitary protocols, not only at our hotel but virtually everywhere we went. From thermal cameras at the Tuxtla-Gutierrez airport, to the van driver disinfecting every suitcase, to the general use of facemasks and virtually all shops and restaurants conducting temperature checks and supplying anti-bacterial gels, we felt very safe and protected during our entire visit to Chiapas.
One of the very best features of Las Escaleras is the location. Pretty much everything we did and wanted to do was within an easy walk. And yet you are just far enough from the centre of town to enjoy almost total silence at night and early morning for those looking to have a lie-in.
We calculated that this was our first visit in almost 25 years and the town has grown, but the charm remains, and many things have actually improved such as the eclectic choice of restaurants, cafes and bars, including some really great dining options.
One thing which visitors have to adjust to is the large numbers of street vendors, peddling mainly arts and crafts from the outlying villages, lots of jewelry and a wide variety of trinkets, street food and dozens of other products. Probably due to the fact that they have had to endure very lean months due to Covid-19, most of these vendors are simply deaf to the word “no” but with a good attitude and friendly banter you begin to take it in your stride after a while. Every traveling will make their own decisions on this front but while you want to help every single person, at the end of the day your purchases will trickle down into the economy and hopefully make a positive impact. We visited two bustling markets and my wife loved them. The vast majority of the stall-keepers are far less pushy than the street vendors and with time and a good eye one can pick up some truly lovely items from highly skilled artisans.
During stays like this you tend to leave the hotel with a touch of sadness, saying good-bye to those who have made your stay so memorable, people like Rolando, Evelin, Iris, David and the wonderful Chef… thanks to all, we will definitely be back as well as looking out for other hotels in the Inmense boutique hotel chain.
- Isabel (10/5): Excelente trato!
- r-armino (10/5): Good Hotel in San Cristobal - Great Service, ver., very friendly front desk staff and restaurant service. We enjoyed our stay and everybody was happy. The staff is super friendly. They made us feel at home. Breakfast at the restaurant was very good as well. Very friendly servers. They have a smile all the time.
- Califas (8/5): Very Nice and Central - A very nice hotel within a 10 minute walk of the central Zocalo and Church. The rooms are spacious and tiled so a bit cool in March, but probably very good in the summer. All staff is friendly and helpful and will go out of their way to be of service (shout out to Evelin).
The name (The Stairs) is fitting as there are many. I had room 6 and climed 42+ stairs to get to my room (lucky for me, both my wife and I are in pretty good shape..... still). Since we were out on most days before 6 AM, I cannot comment on the restaurant.
One final word: the hotel is part of a chain of hotels and you might be offered a 'presentation' in exchange for a gift. No pressure like in timeshares though.
Will be back again as San Cristobal is central to any day trip tour you might be planning on taking.
- AuditoreEnzo02 (10/5): Very nice - Very nice hotel, just beautiful, we will return in May with our daughters to repeat this great experience, thanks for everything !! To the rolled manager, the chef Reynaga, to Miss Evelin who always treated us with a lot of affection and kindness, keep doing your job as until today, we leave with an excellent taste in every way!
- pariseclectic (8/5): Welcoming and central! - Iris at reception was supportive of every request, from flexible travel plans to baggage storage to a surprise, hand made birthday cake for my partner! Reynaga and David in the restaurent hand decorated the cake to our delight. Beds were made up with extra blankets for cold nights and the views across San Cristobal are stunning. Central location made exploring so much easier. A room closer to the entrance is easier as the high altitude can be hard after tacos & mescal!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The hotel was located within a 10 minute walk of the city center, breakfast was amazing, very spacious and clean rooms as well. Overall solid experience there.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Great staff, specially Iris, she was soo nice. Terrible to get out from your car into hotel, narrow street. No parking lot. Good breakfast
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Nice place but room was cold at night and hot water would only last a few minutes for showers
- A4680VWmikes (10/5): Highly Recommend - I stayed here with my cousin and had an awesome experience. The hotel was within a 5-10 minute walk of the main part of town. The breakfast was very tasty and the staff was extremely helpful with booking tours, etc. The room was very clean and had everything we needed. Keep in mind that there are many stairs you need to walk up in order to get to your room.
- HUGO (10/5): - Las instalaciones y habitaciones don unicas todo estuvo excelente!! Atencion, comida, precios, ubicacion todo en general.
No me gusto no poder quedarme mas noches.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Excelente. Hermoso hotel y la gente super amable. Feliz mi estancia!!
- Neil (10/5): Very nice place - Wonderful place. About a 5 minute walk to the center of town. They make a wonderful cooked to order breakfast every morning. Fast wifi in the room. Very gracious staff. But they speak little English. I would definitely stay there again and San Cristobal is a lovely town.
- Fernando (10/5): Excelente!!!
- Arianna (10/5): Great hotel! Friendly service and beautiful rooms. - I spend 3 nights at another hotel in town then moved over here. This place was amazing. The hotel is beautiful. The room was clean the bed was comfortable the shower's were amazing. If I go back to San Cristobal I will be staying here.
- EDUARDO (8/5): Muy recomendable!!!
- sjccal (2/5): Dishonest Management - They replied in a response to our first review that they would refund the money for the nights we couldn't stay because of extremely cold conditions in the room. But, in fact, they never did. The rooms are cold and when it rains, they leak. Management said they had refunded the money, but did not.
- 301armandoc (10/5): A special place to vacation at San Cris - This time I spent my vacation at San Cris, as mexican lovely nickname the town of San Cristobal Las Casas, in the state of Chiapas, Mexico. The hotel I selected together with my wife and daughter was Las Escaleras. This lovely decorated place with Mexican tiles & beautiful gardens had two spacious rooms and bathrooms very comfortable. The breakfast was delicious and the staff helpful by far, I specially remember Evelyn at the front desk and David at the restaurant. The location was excellent and we enjoyed the walk from the hotel to the main park downtown only four blocks away. As part of the accommodation, we had a nice terrace with a table and chairs useful at any time to enjoy an amazing view of the city. I strongly recommend this hotel as a special place to vacation at San Cris.
- Zabook (6/5): Very clean and OK location. no more. - We stayed at the hotel for 5 nights in August 2019. The hotel is close to the center of the city. we were 5 in the room with 2 showers and bathrooms. room was spotless clean. but otherwise had some issues: one night we didnt have hot water. there room is very dark with not enough light. windows that can be opened are very small. breakfast is very mexican. not very good. we couldnt find what to eat. there are a lot of stairs to the room. the Wi-Fi was crap, for 48 hrs it didnt work at all. only after i complained they brought someone to fix it.
And when we wanted to check our 1 hr later (1pm instead of 12pm) they asked for 500 pesos. this is ridiculous.
I am sure there are better hotels in San Cristobal (we loved that city)
- trevinoh2016 (8/5): Very charming boutique hotel - This boutique hotel is very well kept, with a charming architecture and a very unique layout. The service was very good at all levels, very friendly and helpful staff. It is located a short walk to the main plaza and restaurants. The room was very large with amazing views of the city.
- sjccal (2/5): Freezing Cold!! - The rooms are ridiculously cold. And our room, the "Owner's Suite" had a small glassed-in balcony that leaked in a hundred places when it rained, showering water all over the furniture and the floor. So, it was both cold AND wet! When we checked in, we requested two of the portable space heaters they provide, but they didn't come anywhere near to heating the rooms.
To make matters worse, we both had colds and coughs, so it was not only uncomfortable, but dangerous to our health. We checked out after one night, instead of staying two. We explained we weren't well and requested a refund for the second night, which we had foolishly paid in advance. However, they told us that in order to get a refund or a voucher for a future stay, we would have to sign a document that apparently limited our rights to tell the truth in our reviews! We refused to sign, believing it was more important to warn people about this hotel. It seems the management really doesn't care about your health or comfort, simply about their profits.
The manager told us he would see what he could do about getting us a refund even without signing their bizarre document, but we haven't heard anything. Don't stay here, and if your do (hopefully in warm weather), don't pay in advance!
