Guest Reviews
- Thomas Gordon (8/5): - The bedroom was much better than the sister hotel in Huizhou.
Breakfast was good.
Mostly for Chinese clientele but something for everyone.
A large mall with clothes shops and food outlets is within walking distance. The restaurant is often in darkness in the evening, which makes guests assume that it is closed.
The western choice of food in the evening is not ideal.
- Michael (7/5): - Sehr sauberes und komfortabeles Hotel. Sehr großes Zimmer. Bequeme Betten.

- Verified traveler (10/5): - Good stay. Nice city view from the room. Clean and organized. The breakfast is good too. Would recommend it.
- TakingThePath (10/5): Marvelous view from the room! - The hotel manager helped to upgrade my room to a Suite on the Club floor, which is probably the best one in the hotel. The type of room is definitely big, including a cloakroom, a bathroom with a bathtub, and a huge bedroom with a broad view of the lake nearby. It gave me great pleasure to wake up in such beautiful scenery during my two-day stay in Zhangzhou.
- Mr.T (10/5): Excellent choice hotel - An excellent hotel for business travellers. Clean comfy beds, Good wifi connection, great breakfast, and not too far from high speed train station. Wanda shopping area just 15 minutes walk. Only gripe was that the staff should learn more English.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - it wasn't too bad for a hotel in zhangzhou. However, the breakfast was quite bad. the room was clean to be fair. Ther service was just ok.
- 788ScottS788 (8/5): Terrific stay and lunch! - Was taken here by my business host while in China. Really enjoyed the city overall, and this hotel was first class. It has a fantastic brunch set out every day with a massive and very well done buffet. Highly recommend.
- TienK (8/5): Fairly new hotel meeting 4* standard - We only spent one night at the Crowne Plaza Zhangzhou. One could tell the hotel was fairly new from the finishes and contemporary foyer area with polished floors and a high ceiling.
Staff were helpful enough though we did not have much contact with them. We did patronise the Chinese restaurant linked to the hotel on the ground floor. Food was decent but I was not impressed with how everything came at a price - including water and Chinese tea! The latter is normally a complimentary part of dining in China.
The rooms were suitably finished to a 4* hotel standard. While I am aware there have been other user comments on the place, I must say that the standard on average is better than many other Crowne Plaza Hotels around the world that I have patronised through the years. This may be due to how new the building is!
Hopefully, the management can strive for excellent standards to satisfy all guests and their expectations. We were happy with our stay and will return to stay there if circumstances require.
- elliottd358 (4/5): Fails to meet international standards - On the surface this hotel has everything you would expect from a Crowne Plaza in China - a spacious lobby, comfortable guestrooms, and a decent lap pool.
Unfortunately, the experience of staying here is marred by the poor behavior of local guests and the unprofessional and disinterested staff.
The most shocking thing about this (supposedly) international chain hotel is that not a single person on the staff speaks a word of English. It is understandable that locals from a Tier III-IV city like this don't sound like Queen Elizabeth when they talk, but for the front desk attendant to laugh and say "I don't understand English" (in Chinese) in response to the word "check-in" is frankly mind-boggling.
There is nothing of interest in the sleepy sprawl outside the hotel, which is unfortunate since the restaurants in the hotel itself are dire. At breakfast none of the workers were at their stations and were just standing off to the side chatting amongst themselves. Food was subpar and mostly catering towards local tastes. The buffet dinner appeared to be mostly cold-cuts and local meat dishes sitting out at room temperature, and the other Chinese restaurant had exorbitant prices.
Finally, while the hotel has some nice facilities, the behavior of the guests (smoking and talking loudly in the corridors at all hours) is another reason we would avoid returning here.
That said, the rooms themselves are very comfortable and there aren't many other options in the city. If you do find yourself here, We would recommend using a car-hailing application to take you elsewhere in the city for meals. It is also easy to get from the hotel to the high-speed rail station (around 15 minutes by car).
Smoking in corridors
- CHUAN (8/5): - 1. Check in was slow, especially for a prepaid reservation.
2. I could not believe there was no closet in the delux room. No place to hang clothes.
- Johnnygtr2 (2/5): Devolving to a local Chinese style hotel - This hotel was on a rocket to becoming a true Crowne Plaza property. Unfortunately, a management change late last year has resulted in a new GM and staff that are all inexperienced in the hospitality industry.
The entire management team has changed and the hotel is regressing quickly to a local Chinese type property. What dies this mean? It means 98% of the staff CANNOT speak English and the western food options are poorly executed. Rooms are not cleaned consistently and everything is becoming geared towards Chinese tourists.
The Executive Lounge staff cannot speak English and have no idea how to handle foreign guests.
There are a few good staff members remaining who worked under the previous management, but I suspect they will also soon depart, as they are a much higher caliber than the incoming local level staff.
As a Spire Elite IHG member and frequent visitor to this hotel, I am disappointed to see the hotel go backwards so fast.
If you are a western visitor looking for excellent service, good food, and the ability to communicate with the hotel staff - look elsewhere. The overall cleanliness, food quality, and service are going downhill fast.
This hotel used to be THE place to stay in Zhangzhou. For now, I would choose the Wanda Realm.
NOT recommended.
- Verified traveler (8/5): 員工態度有待改善 - 前枱接待人員沒有笑容,語氣粗魯,沒有禮貌,不符合星級酒店的標準。房間景觀開揚,有古怪氣味,但整潔度不錯,床很舒適。
- Thomas (8/5): Not bad - The room is quite big overall experience is good.
Breakfast is okay but can be better.
- AS (10/5): Western hotel - New hotel in this city. Brand new facility. Overall good experience.
- See See (8/5): - Restaurants are limited they only have 2 restaurants and during dinner the western restaurant only have buffet.
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- CHI PANG (8/5): -
- whitelazycat (8/5): Comfortable stay! - This hotel located in the new developing area of Zhangzhou with new facilities and clean rooms. Our room can see great view of the river and bridge outside .. very comfortable stay here. Also the breakfast is delicious and various choices. Staffs here are friendly and helpful.
- Johnnygtr2 (10/5): Another Wonderful Stay! - I am an IHG Platinum Member. I've stayed at this hotel three times since my last review. This is definitely THE place to stay in Zhangzhou.
Cindy, Kevin, Elian, Lynsi, Lily, and many others always make me feel like I'm at home and part of their family.
During this visit, the hotel had multiple special meetings and events, including two large meeting events that happened on the same week. The hotel was at 100% full capacity, which definitely put the CP Zhangzhou Team to a test! I've visited many hotels in Asia that falter during full capacity situations like this. I have to say, the CP Zhangzhou Team stepped up their game, showing no signs of gaps or weaknesses. Truly impressive!!
A major typhoon also hit Zhangzhou in the early morning hours during my stay. When I awoke, I had no idea of the storm's severity. However, upon leaving the hotel to attend a business meeting, I saw significant damage to the area around the hotel. Trees snapped in half, awnings and fences ripped apart, etc. Apparently, whoever built the hotel planned for such weather. Aside from a shattered outer pane of glass (the inner pane of glass remained intact), there was no damage to the hotel and I never heard any of the noise!
Regarding the hotel's main area, rooms, food, and other amenities....
Lobby / Check In / Check Out:
The lobby is huge, very clean, and has a nice layout. If you walk in and appear to be semi-lost, one of the lobby staff will suddenly appear and happily help point you in the right direction. Check in is generally quick and efficient. Check out can sometimes be challenging, but not due to the hotel staff. Many times I have been in line and had other (Chinese) guests walk up and simply cut to the front of the line. Those of you who travel to Asia frequently know what I am talking about. Since I am a Lao Wei (foreigner), these guests seem to think it's OK. The hotel desk staff is always polite in redirecting these people to the back of the line, and then proceed to apologize to me (apology form the hotel staff is NOT needed - they didn't cut in line!), and then complete my check out. Again - this IS NOT a hotel issue, but a guest issue.
Rooms:
I have yet to get a bad room here. I prefer a room facing east or south, as it gives a great view of the surrounding area. However, if yo uget a higher room, you can get a nice veiw, regardless of which way your room faces. Each room is clean and well maintained, with new/modern furnishings, a large flat screen TV, great beds, and a nice sized desk. Power outlets are on both sides of the bed, at the desk, and in the bathroom. Some rooms even have a 4 port USB charger next to the bed, to make it super convenient to plug in any type of device. The desks have an HDMI and regular computer port to connect your laptop to the TV.
Bathrooms:
The bathrooms are nicely sized and always spotless, with a separate toilet and shower area. Bathtubs vary by room type. There is a window between the main part of the room and the bathroom. It has a screen that you can raise or lower. If you are staying alone, leaving the screen open makes the room seem even bigger. If you are staying with others, the screen can be lowered for privacy. The shower has a rainfall type shower head and a hand-held sprayer. Some of the rooms have a tub that has the separate hand sprayer as well. Bathroom amenities include a Hair dryer, soap, shower gel, shampoo, toothbrushes and toothpaste, shower caps, vanity kits, and more.
Food:
In room dining is available 24 hours a day. During night hours, the selection is limited, but has something for everyone. During normal (daytime) hours, the room service menu includes everything that is on the Fresh All Day Dining restaurant menu. The menu selections range from Asian style, to Italian and Western. The Fresh ADD restaurant offers a daily buffet for breakfast and dinner. Depending on the hotel capacity and time of year, they also have a lunch buffet. Each buffet is different (they clean up and reset between each one). The buffet offers a huge variety of food, with Asian and Western favorites, along with specials based on a "theme" that changes every month (for example, one month, they featured Thai food). Pretty much something for everyone, from seafood, chicken, beef, pork, fish, seafood, sushi, sashimi, salads, pizza, pasta, various desserts, ice cream, a chocolate fountain, and more. They also offer a wide range of drinks, from coffee, tea, juice, beer, and wine. To my surprise (and delight!) they have added a SUPER FRESH canned DRAFT beer from Mut Krieger, a German brewery down the street. The beer is usually 2-3 days old and is quite refreshing!! Kudos to Kevin for finding that for me!!! There is a Chinese restaurant that I have not tried yet, but have heard that it is very nice. The Lobby Lounge is a great place to go in the evening for a night cap.
Executive Floor Lounge:
The executive floor lounge is a great place to go work in quiet. If you have access and don't want to sit in your room, this is a a relaxing place with a great view of the city. They offer a happy hour every night, with various drinks, hot snacks, small cakes, and a selection of nuts. The staff is always very polite and helpful. If you can afford it, it's definitely worth the upgrade!!!
Wifi:
The wifi is fast and reliable - wired or wireless. They have a Hong Kong VPN, so you can access Facebook, YouTube, Google, and GMail (sites usually blocked in China).
Nearby:
The hotel is very close to a "green" park area that is great for walking or jogging. If you want to go shop or look for street food, you can head over to the Wanda Plaza, which is a mall and retail shop area about 2-3 minutes away by cab or 10-15 minutes by walking. The hotel staff can give you easy directions to both places. The Mut Krieger and other pubs are located along a nearby street that runs parallel with the lake, offering great views from their patios and fun places to hang out.
Many staff members speak English. Some more than others, but all of them have improved significantly over the last year or so. If you run in to a communication issue, the staff member you are talking with is quick to say "One moment please, let me go get someone who speaks English!". Help arrives and your questions/requests are quickly handled.
Cindy, Kevin, and the other managers are always asking me for feedback and what else they can do to improve. When I do offer ideas or suggestions, they take them very seriously and do their best to implement them. I've stayed at many hotels who ask me for feedback, but then promptly ignore it after I leave. The management of the CP Zhangzhou is genuinely interested in customer feedback and continuously improving their hotel. This definitely sets the CP Zhangzhou apart from other hotels in this area, as well as across Asia. I'm running out of suggestions for them, because they keep fixing things!!!!
If you are heading to Zhangzhou, the Crowne Plaza is the place to stay!
- _M1018MR (8/5): 景色優美房間舒適 - The room is big and comfortable, the view through out the room is very nice and I very enjoy it. There is a shopping mall near by the hotel which name is 萬達. If you don't want to go shopping you can try some local food out of the shopping mall. I had tried 四果湯, and I think it is good to try!
- Tadahiro (10/5): The best hotel in Zhangzhou - The hotel is new and room is very clean. Breakfast has wide variety includes very good Japanese sushi and also very good sweet buns.
I would recommend this should be the best hotel if you trivel to Zhangzhou for business.
- RAYMOND (10/5): - Good stay. Very nice hotel
- Johnnygtr2 (10/5): Evolving into a destination Crowne Plaza Property! - My last review of this property was less than stellar. However, much to my surprise, the management took my comments to heart and has been steadily improving!!!
While there are some things that may never change - such as the air conditioning not being available from October through May (those of you who travel frequently in China know that this is "normal") - many of the other aspects have been improved.
The rooms are well kept, modern, and very clean. Comfortable beds and a pillow menu help you get the best sleep possible. Occasionally, there are some rude guests who return to their rooms late at night shouting in the halls and slamming doors - but this is not the hotel's fault. Overall, the rooms are very quiet and comfortable.
The restaurant staff has improved in terms of their English skills, as well as faster service. Service is much faster and efficient than my previous stay - but with all of the same staff. This tells me that the GM and Executive Chef have taken serious steps to address my previous issues and improve their people - which is great to see!!
While I'd still like for them to add at least one draft beer to their beverage selections (Carlsberg or Tiger!!), their selection of beverage options is great and should make anyone happy.
The biggest improvement is the addition of a VPN - which was a pleasant surprise. No other hotel in the area offers this benefit - which means you can access Gmail, Facebook, etc, during your stay. The internet service is reliable and speed is fast, which is also a bonus!
Not only has this location evolved in to a true Crowne Plaza property, the awesome staff and their "home away from home" attitude make this a truly special place to stay. When I visit Zhangzhou, this is the ONLY hotel to consider!!! You won't be disappointed!!
- Johnnygtr2 (4/5): Crowne Plaza by name only! - I've stayed at many Crowne Plaza hotels in China. I'm an IHG Platinum Member. Stayed for 2 nights.
As a previous reviewer noted, no mention of the Executive Lounge privileges at check in - just at check out. My room key didn't work. Check in took almost 20 minutes and it was obvious the staff was struggling with the process. Had to ask for the welcome drink coupon (again, usually offered for being a Platinum member).
Dinner buffet had a Chinese theme, which is fine. But NO signs in English identifying and of the food. Wait staff spoke little to no English, so ordering drinks, getting plates cleared, etc, was challenging.
Breakfast buffet leans more towards Chinese/Asian fare. There is an egg statin, but you have to track down the chef to order anything. Took us 15-20 minutes to receive our coffee after ordering it. They have a couple of coffee machines, but after taking our order, the wait staff simply went off to do other things. We had to remind them we were waiting for the coffee.
Dinner the second night was much the same. We tried to order "cold draft beer" (they have a lobby bar with a draft station), but this request was met with blank stares and then a 10 minute meeting with most of the wait staff, as they tried to figure out what we wanted. I finally used my phone to translate "cold draft beer" into Chinese, showed it to a waitress, and she seemed to understand. She ran off to the join the huddle of people discussing our original request (including the manager now), explained what we wanted and all seemed to understand. Hooray! Then the manager appeared at our table, with a BIG smile, and presented us with 2 cold BOTTLES of Qingdao "Draft" beer…..
Room was clean and well kept. No musty smell, but stayed on a Non-smoking floor. TV channels were very limited (more so than at most CP properties). Internet was slow and I ended up using my own wireless repeater hooked up to the LAN cable at the desk to get slow, but reliable wifi.
Zhangzhou is not a small remote city in China, but this CP certainly has the feel of a small Chinese hotel in a remote city. The Wanda Realm hotel, which is nearby, has a staff with good english skills, better food, and wifi that works everywhere.
While this was far from a terrible experience, it is certainly not up to the "normal" CP standards that I have come to expect.
- Malihousa (6/5): Good hotel but musty odor smell in the room - Have stayed twice in this hotel recently. The check in time was longer than other hotels however the staff was very polite. Every time when we walked into the room there was a strong musty smell. After we turned on the air conditioner, the smell disappeared. The swimming pool was average. The breakfast was a lot worse than its sister hotel in Xiamen. We were told that it was the best one in Zhangzhou. - Imelda (8/5): Pleasant and very nice hotel - Pleasant but it is not near city area
- Verified traveler (8/5): Nice hotel and good food - Very nice hotel
- uncek (10/5): Great room, great food and great service.. - It was my first stay at this hotel and at my first step entered the lobby the hotel staff have given me a warm welcome as good ad they can.. And it continuous until my checkout.
I forgot my ipad in the plane on my way to this city the day before. I already thought to buy another new one as I guessed it would not come back, but surprisingly, during my breakfast, the hotel staff tell me it will arrive in one hour!
With my colleagues we had dinner in the hotel restaurant, and they cooked very good seafood and meat in Chinese Western style. So you get the taste and better presentation.
Breakfast as well very good, but the way they place the food all along the way, made me has to walk 50m to get my juice and bread.
Sure will stay again here..! I put excellent because you get much more for the price..
- FoodieGloria (10/5): couldn't believe what I found at buffet breakfast - Had my stay with my family during CNY. We arrived at the hotel pretty late and had to visit the Chinese restaurant before we checked in. Though it was very close to the closing time, the staff provided good service with patience. (Though I really hoped they got a clean table cloth for us...)
Room was clean and neat. Linen was brand new. The towel was the best I have used from all the hotels I have visited. However, the pillows were too soft. Didn't sleep well because of it.
The buffet breakfast was really high standard and in good quality. Chef was really kind and willing to introduce the items to guests. We found the most different section from other hotels was the pastry and cake section. The cakes they served (in buffet breakfast, yes, you didn't read it wrong) was so nice that my father couldn't stop himself to get 2 plates. Highly appreciated and recommended it since we did have a great time here.
- bpdogs (4/5): Left Feeling Cheated - I stopped asking the question "Why'? in China a long time ago. Like why was the last reviewer able to get the service I didn't.
The visit started off great. One of the women in the lobby walked me to the street that goes directly to Wanda shopping mall so I wouldn't get lost. 10 minutes and you have plenty of restaurants to choose from. However, coming back might be better by taxi for some people as with construction along the route it was almost pitch black. I got lost but was lucky to have a flashlight in my phone and the CP is easy to see from a distance.
That night I needed help with the internet and found out that the night staff does not speak English. After 3 people who could not help, a manager was sent to my room.
The next morning the shower flooded the whole bathroom. Maybe the mat left on the floor of the shower was the problem? I have no idea, but it was bad.
The breakfast at 92 RMB is nothing special but had plenty of sausages and made to order eggs and omelets.
Upon check-out is where things really went downhill. When I checked in I had to ask for my free drink coupons because they forgot to offer them. (Platinum member) But what was worse is when the woman asked how I enjoyed the executive lounge. Lounge? I told her no one told me about the lounge when I checked in. Seems it was free to Platinum members.
The worst part though is when I requested a taxi to a destination that was 25 minutes away. A man told me he would make a call and to have seat and wait. I then saw a taxi drive up and let some people out. Before I could say anything it was gone. I asked why they didn't hold the taxi for me. I was told my destination was too far for taxis. (I was going to a train station in the same city.) When I was finally told it would cost me 90 RMB, I started laughing and said "You're crazy! it's only a 25 minute drive! I them said I'd take a bus before I pay 90 RMB, so they guy told me where to catch a bus 2 blocks away. The hotel is on a side street so I just walked the half block to the main road and caught a taxi for the metered final price of 58 RMB.
Wish I knew how the pervious poster got a car from the hotel for a 1 hour drive for only 120 RMB. My white face maybe got the "foreigner's discount"?
The hotel is gorgeous and so was the room, but I would never stay here again after the treatment I had trying to leave the hotel!
- kinghuang (10/5): Newly Opened; Excellent Services and Value - The Crowne Plaza Zhangzhou opened this year, in what appears to be a developing part of Zhangzhou. Significant amounts of construction surrounds the complex, but the hotel itself delivers excellent service (even in English) and a calm, welcoming environment inside.
We stayed for one night, just past the end of the National Day holidays, as part of a trip from Hong Kong to Xiamen. We arrived in a hurry, mid-afternoon, to drop off our luggage and catch transportation to see some Fujian Tolous a couple hours west. The reception staff efficiently handled check-in and stored our bags as we rushed back out the door. Despite my rapid requests in English, everything was tackled with ease, with the minor exception of two of our identity cards being accidentally left behind in the scanner/copier, which they were apologetic about.
As an IHG Platinum Ambassador member, the hotel upgraded the Superior Room and Deluxe Room to an Upgrade Twin Room and Superior Suite, respectively, and provided us with complimentary drink vouchers for the lobby lounge. There was welcome fruit in both rooms, including some really good dragon fruit. There was even a bowl of lemon water with the fruit to rinse your fingers with. I haven't seen that in my rooms, before!
The Upgrade Twin room features two large beds, notable larger than the single beds I tend to find in two-bed rooms in China, but not quite queen size. Each bed had two different sized pillows, which were very comfortable. The bathroom features a large window into the room by the bathtub with electronic blinds that can be lowered.
The Superior Suite is massive with a great desk-bed-couch layout in the main room (see pictures). The layout is very functional and attractive, and makes great use of the space whether you're relaxing on the couch in front of the bed or working at the desk behind the bed. Large windows on two sides give a great view of Zhangzhou and the demolition/reconstruction outside the hotel. A large open closet area by the entrance provides lots of storage space for luggage. And, like the Upgrade Twin room, the bathroom has a large window that opens to the rest of the room. There's also a smaller window to look out of while you're soaking in the tub.
During check-out, we asked the concierge for suggestions on how to get to the Hotel Indigo Xiamen Harbour, our next destination. The concierge arranged a vehicle to drive us straight there for 120 RMB, an amazing value! In retrospect, we should have stuck with the concierge's recommendation for transportation to the Fujian Tulous, too. Next time!
