Guest Reviews
- Erick (10/5): - Excellent stay, excellent service, an incredible place to rest and be relax — fully recommended.
- Taylor (8/5): - The area and property are absolutely gorgeous, it was such a relaxing place to stay. The breakfast was great
- David (10/5): The perfect Place to Stay to See Quetzals - The perfect place to stay to maximize your chances of seeing quetzals. Not the cheapest but worth every dollar. Beautiful grounds even in the rain. Very friendly and attentive staff. Good restaurant with great service. Truly excellent guide in Greibin.
- Roy (10/5): - Amazing
- Andrew (10/5): Stunning grounds, comfortable rooms. - Had a lovely stay. The grounds are gorgeous. Our room was clean, and plenty warm with the small heater. We didn't even need to leave the property to see a Quetzal. I love the communal bar/lounge.
- Kimberly (10/5): - We loved the nature around Trogon Lodge. The landscaping was amazing, and my son loved watching the trout in the pond. We loved all the birds and the hiking trails. The grounds of Trogon Lodge were so lush and beautiful, and photos cannot capture their enchanting beauty. For people with mobility issues, be aware that the lodge is a steep slope and could be difficult for some. Also, it is advisable to pack wisely so you don't bring unnecessary luggage up to the room, as it is a trek carrying it.
- claudia (10/5): - Los jardines y el entorno preciosos! Instalaciones impecables.
- Stephan (10/5): - The grounds were stunning. The lodges/cabins were clean and quiet, but were basic.
- Karen (10/5): Beautiful resort - We loved this beautiful resort with wonderful flowers. Non of the rooms had wifi and our internet provider (Kolbi) wouldn’t work in the rooms. Wifi was provided in the restaurant and bar area.
We did see quetzal birds with an early morning guide…well worth it!
- Bernardo (10/5): - Beautiful location
- James (10/5): - Gardens were fabulous. Facilities were amazing. The staff were great. Graven gave a great, passionate tour of the quetzals.
- Stephen (10/5): - Gorgeous property, flowers, hummingbirds, river. Cabins basic but clean and comfortable. Quetzal watching early in the morning. Dining room nice with good food and service.
- Brigitte (10/5): - We love this place! Our lodgings are super clean, Cozy and unique. They are located in a gorgeous park with lots of beautiful plants, trees , and a pond with fish. The Savegre river runs through the property. Lush vegetation. There is a great 3 km hiking trail, and there are a couple of shorter trails. There is a lovely restaurant on the property that serves great food. They are very willing to accommodate any dietary restrictions. They offered to prepare a take out, custom-made breakfast for us tomorrow, ready at 6 am since we have to leave early to catch a plane in San Jose! There is also a nice bar in a separate building with a pool table. The service at this place is outstanding. I’m very impressed! Wish we could stay longer!
- Steven (10/5): - This lodge is a hidden gem. The food at the restaurant was a little hit and miss, but everyone was extremely friendly and welcoming. Greivin went out of his way to help in any way he could and he also leads the excellent Quetzal tours every morning!! Great stay!!
- Scott (8/5): - This was a great property off the beaten path. Road going down is narrow and could use some work but once you get there it’s worth it. Staff was excellent.
- Janet (10/5): - Great location for birders. Difficult road in. Bring warm clothes and raincoat
- Tommy (10/5): - Landscaping was beautiful with plants to naturally attract birds of all types
- Adriana (10/5): - Place is beyond beautiful, trails, small waterfall, so many cozy places to hang around, the decor is so nice.
Restaurants was 7/10 at best, few options actually but there are really good restaurants nearby.
Included breakfast was really good.
Rooms are small but comfortable, heater was actually good (place is cold weather) but cleaning and amenities were lacking.
I was afraid of the road to the hotel since received an email stating it was a little dangerous but in reality, you just have to go slowly and be cautious (no need for 4x4)
Will totally come back
- Linda (10/5): - Great accommodations & viewed many Quetzales.
- Alan (10/5): - Peaceful and serene. Staff was excellent. Will stay again.
- Anthony (10/5): - Fabulous place
- Andres (8/5): - Buen lugar para relajarse
- Linda (10/5): - Trogon Lodge is set in beautiful grounds by the river, a really lovely setting, birds everywhere and the cabins are comfortable with porch sitting areas to enjoy watching the birds and hearing the river roaring. Quite magical!
We dined at the restaurant and the food was delicious- with many selections. Breakfasts were also delicious with plenty of options.
We enjoyed walking the Lodge's trails and grounds, early-morning and had 7 sightings of the beautiful Quetzals. It rained one afternoon so we enjoyed sitting at the bar sipping on hot tea and reading our books as we listened to the rain. We will definitely visit Trogon Lodge again!
- Steve (10/5): - Trogon Lodge is situated in one of the most beautiful settings in the world. It is a haven for bird watchers. We had a wonderful experience.
- Anthony (10/5): - Fantastic place!! Relaxing area, surrounded by awesome stunning natural places. A lot of birds flying just around you. Simple magic!
- Santiago (10/5): - One of the best places to relax and enjoy. Excellent service along with beautiful trails and ice cold pure water river.
- Norma (10/5): - Awesome place
- Marianne (8/5): Such a beautiful place…But unfortunate problems! - Such a beautiful place and location. A unique stay. We have stayed before that’s why we came again. Unfortunately we had some not so good experiences this time. Mostly with the restaurant. We brought friends with us and we all had different entrees the first night. Each one said the meal was not good! The service was very poor. Breakfast was good. Except for the pineapple/ coconut juice which had soured. But again very poor service. The second night we could only trust a pizza to be palatable. So unfortunate! Also no towels to dry hands in the bathroom off the bar. We mentioned this but nothing changed. If they could change the staff issue and better meals it would get a better rating.
- Scott (10/5): - A supremely good place to stay for enjoying the cloud rainforest, and birds.
If you're an athlete you can either hike, run the trails, or jog/run the Quetzales grinder hill descent and climb and see the bird on the way.
- manuel (10/5): - The sound of the river and the birds.
- Jose (10/5): - Amazing experience,staff very friendly...and place looks like a fairytale
- Randall (10/5): - Absolutely wonderful gardens and property
- Garth (10/5): - The scenery on this property was extraordinary! Perfect place for birdwatchers. We saw both the male and female elusive Resplendent Quetzal as well as many other birds of the area. We saw the Quetzal on the property. The guided birding walk was well worth the cost - highly recommended! The gardens around the property are amazing - words cannot express the beauty and tranquility. The food at the lodge is excellent and included trout from the local area.
- Louise (10/5): - The grounds are beautiful and very well looked after with many places to sit and relax. The staff are very friendly and personable and the breakfast was excellent.
- Linda (10/5): - We had a remarkable visit at this special place. We joined the early morning Quetzal Quest and saw a pair of Quetzals and nesting Toucanets. The next morning we saw more from the beautiful deck. The included breakfast was superb.
- Federico (10/5): - It’s ok
- Maria (10/5): - Wonderful staff! The hotel surroundings are out of this world!
- Mary (10/5): - Spectacular scenery, went there for the birds & as a special finale to our mostly-hosteling trip. Did not disappoint. Everyone visitor to Costa Rica needs to experience this area.
- Christin (10/5): - Location and property are beautiful. The staff is wonderful. Food was delicious! We ate breakfast and dinner at the lodge for most meals because it was so good.
Two things that would make the lodge perfect (and this is being picky!). Yoga classes, a hot tub. Area gets cold at night and there’s no true heating anywhere. Bundle up!
Would stay again!!
- Todd (10/5): - Wonderful grounds and ideal location. Nice trails and very good restaurant. Plenty of food and choices. Nice bar area with fireplace and pool table.
- manuel (10/5): - If you love nature you will enjoy this place. Food is just great and personal very friendly.
- Simon (6/5): beautiful environment but hotel was lacking basics - When we spend this much on a hotel stay, we expect working heat and hot water. We had neither.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The gardens were just magnificent. The thread count on the bed was nice. The food was very expensive. $50 for 2 soups and a salad. Outrageous!
- Aaron (10/5): - Wandering the paths at Trogon Lodge is like walking through the gardens of a fairytale.
- Estrella (10/5): - Wonderful place to be one with nature. Great service and wonderful food.
- Richard (10/5): BEAUTIFUL GROUNDS!! - We only stayed 1 night because we were passing through from the west coast to the east coast. Big mistake!! Lovely grounds, very peaceful, with a nice trail hike on the property. I can't say enough about how beautiful the grounds are. Amazing design with several ponds, the beautiful flowing river on the property, bridges, etc. I wished we could've stayed longer. With that being said I should also point out that the drive down to the property is long and steep - the sign suggests using a lower gear - do this!! We overheated the brakes on our car which prevented us from leaving the property to get a late lunch. Luckily they do have a restaurant onsite, but they close in between lunch and dinner. The restaurant is amazing, but pricey (understandably). The cabins are definitely considered rustic. There is a plugin heater in each room - get it started right when you get there, as the nights are very cold and the rooms are not insulated. Bring warm pj's. hahaha You share a little porch with a connecting guest room. The walls are paper thin. We could hear every word, sneeze, pee from the people next door, it was almost embarrassing. So, in summary, beautiful place but almost wished they would've spent as much on the rooms as they did on the grounds. Oh, and the staff is great!!
- Samuel (10/5): - Beautiful
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Comfortable beds, cozy cabin, great amenities. Restaurant and food was great, presentation, portions, decor, staff, quality. Great place to disconnect and recharge surrounded by nature.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Amazing Spot - Staff are very helpful, food in the restaurant is excellent. Good location and super grounds and trail.
- Carol (10/5): Best hotel in the area - good food, superb gardens - Our second time staying at Trogon - have stayed in three other hotels and one Airbnb in St. Gerardo de Dota. This is our favorite. They are recovering from Nate which wiped out a large part of the area, including roads, so give them your business!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great stay! Would recommend to everyone!
Great stay! Would recommend to everyone!
- Edgar (10/5): Cery happy customers - We had a great time. Fruendly staff, wonderfull meals. The place is wonderful. Fior sure we will return in a near future.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Pretty peacefull place. - This place is great to have a nice recess from all the noise of the city and to conect with the nature. Pretty nice!
- Fernando (10/5): Incredible mountain hotel to rest. - Were 3 days of rest, peace, tranquility, fresh air, excellent food, hiking and excellent treatment by all hotel staff. It really was much more than I expected and a nice find.
- Guido P (10/5): - Beautiful remote area!
- Javier (10/5): - Great Friendly staff
- Martin (10/5): Fantastic location - Scenic location, friendly staff, good food. Only complaint would be that tea & coffee were very expensive (3-4 US $)
- Frances (8/5): Great hotel for nature lovers and bird watching. - The lodge is very nice and the surrounding areas are gorgeous. The Savegre river runs thru the property making it one of the atractions. It's heaven for nature lovers and bird watching. Don't miss the bird watching tour focus on the quetzal. It's a great experience.
The only thing that you need to be aware is that the lunch and dinner are a fixed menu and quite expensive for what they offer. Breakfast is included and is pretty good.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Great experience, pretty nice and quiet place. Great attention, great food.
- David (8/5): Beautiful lodge in secluded mountain location - Beautiful lodge with lovely gardens. Very friendly staff. Great horse riding. A totally different experience from the coast or rain forest. Well worth a visit.
- Andy (10/5): Wow! Hidden gem - Great staff, stunning location, amazing gardens and the meals were first class
I had seen other reviews complain about the road in, it's not as bad as they say, I found plenty worse in CR. Take your time, drive like a Tico not a Gringo and you will be fine. most of the people there were bird nuts but anyone that appreciates nature and the beauty will love it.
I hope to return one day with the whole family.
- Luis (10/5): Quetzal view - People is very kind and friendly. Tours are awesome, and indeed you can see quetzals if you wake up early and take a guide.
- Scott (10/5): Amazing tropical escape - This is an amazing rain forest getaway. Rooms are comfortable, the grounds are beautiful, and the setting is beautiful. Restaurant serves a lot of food grown on property, including delicious trout. Lots of outdoor activities and many sitting areas to just sit and relax. The staff was very friendly and helpful.
- Michele (10/5): - Very, very nice people, good food (maybe a little expensive: 24$ with tax), very good menu with trout. Very good breakfast.
The road to the lodge is a little difficult but it is worth it.
The lodge is at 2200m of altitude and then a little cold at night: in addition to the heater (only place in Costa Rica where I saw this appliance) they put inside the bed some hot water bottles in the bed.
Nice trail around, we saw lots of birds among which quetzals.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Beautiful valley lodge on a small creek, bird-wachers paradise. Very peaceful.
- Robert (10/5): A favorite of mine in Costa Rica - Just completed a three day two night stay at Trogon Lodge. So far, my favorite in Costa Rica. The staff was a joy to become acquainted with and very helpful. Grievin guided us on the early morning bird tour and we saw several Resplendent Quetals. He was very knowledgable of the birds and was able to use my phone camera with his spotter scope to capture some beautiful bird shots for me. Ronny and Alejandro were most accommodating at the restaurant, even giving me some helpful tips with my struggling Spanish. The food was delicious and beautifully presented; great vodka martini in the bar. Arianna at the front desk, Maria and a new girl in housekeeping; all helped make the stay very enjoyable. I look forward to returning with more of my family.
Pura Vida!

- Adam (10/5): a little slice of heaven - This is the perfect place to get away and reconnect with mother nature. They have wonderfully manicured gardens. Great bird watching and the restaurant has a great menu and a delightful staff that si always greeting with a hello and a smile.
- Luis (10/5): Spectacular and Magnificent Views!!! - Best food ever!!! We stayed at this place for 2 nights, and the Trogon is set in an absolutely beautiful valley, a great place to see quetzals. We took the tour, and we saw about 8 on that morning, and the next day we saw 2 more in the afternoon while we were sitting down at the bar drinking coffee.
Graevin is a very professional and enthusiastic person, he answered all our questions regarding the activities and tours available at the Trogon. We did the "Quetzal" tour with him, and he is a very knowledgeable and well-informed individual explaining all the details about quetzals and the Trogon lodge.
We recommend this place to anyone traveling to Costa Rica and we will definitely be back ourselves!
PURA VIDA!!!
- frank (10/5): Best stay ever... - This way the best stay in my life. I'm 60, traveled all over the world, this was the most enjoyable of all....
- Verified traveler (8/5): Very nice rainforest getaway - This is a very nice small hotel, located in the middle of the rain forest. It is quite close (one hour aprox.) from San José. The staff is very helpful and kind
- Karin (10/5): Quetzals - Incredible place! Spotted several quetzals, fantastic trails. Don't miss it! Cooler temps up there, nice break from hot Costa Rica
- Hilary (10/5): A great birding lodge - Trogon lodge is situated in a beautiful valley with the Savegre river rushing through the property. The individual cabins are simple but comfortable. It gets very cold here at night as you are at 2400 metres, but they have gas heaters in the rooms. We didn't use these as we found the duvets on the beds kept us snug and warm - although it was a little chilly getting out of bed in the morning! Watching the hummingbirds around the grounds is a delight. The staff is very pleasant and helpful.
- Marce (10/5): Wonderful place! - Perfect hotel, delicious weather, exotic place.... 100% recommended!
- Verified traveler (8/5): Perfect to visit San Gerardo de Dota - The lodge is perfect for visiting San Gerardo de Dota and to see quetzals.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great for bird viewing - A beautiful resort in an amazing valley. Guide Greivan will help you spot the elusive Quetzal as we saw a female and a male at their nest. The trout dinner is delicious the staff is super helpful and the Rio Savegre is so beautiful. Even fly fished for small rainbows. The warm water foot warmers were quite a surprise. Something different for your Costa Rican experiance . The hikes are a good workout and the zipline looks to be one of the best.
