Mr Timothy (6/5): OK for a short stay - We stayed for 2 nights. The Captain's House was adequate for our needs. The owners were very pleasant and made us welcome. The breakfast included was cereal, yoghurt and toast - cooked breakfast was extra. Our room was small with a shower and toilet across the corridor shared with other guests if there are any, there was no one else on our floor. The room was quite small. I have slept in more comfortable beds; the pillows could do with being replaced. Parking limited.
Terence (10/5): - Hotel very quirky and quaint. It was like Stepping back in time, intentionally that way. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will certainly stay there again. Owner and his wife couldn't have been any nicer and always ready to help and very knowledgeable about the surrounding areas.
Jenny (6/5): - Beautiful location, old fashioned and kooky b&b. Some things need updating e.g carpet in the bathroom and a damp smell. The included breakfast is described as ‘continental’ but consists of toast and cereal with a £10 cooked breakfast option. Hosts are very friendly and chatty and have great recommendations of activities and places to eat as well as offering a £5 per person cream tea. Overall enjoyed our stay and would come again maybe to a different room as we stayed in the accessible ground floor room.
Chris (2/5): Avoid this place. - On arrival STRAIGHT AWAY we were asked to PAY for hot breakfast for an additional £10pp, if we WANTED anything Hot - which we thought we already had in the B&B booking. HE SAID the continental was included! * His continental was "TOAST and cereal " thats it*! with a very very small orange juice and tea/coffee. This man lives in coocoo land! ( We were expecting crossiants/cheese ham pastries etc etc.. Not a chance.) He is very odd and very ecentric! The room we had was unfortunately an attic room ( we wearnt told this on booking and it wasnt mentioned or we wouldnt have booked it.). The room was tiny and the so called en-suite.. well... you can stand in it and your shoulders will touch each side of the walls and had to back into the toilet area as cant turn around. The Shower was very small and you couldnt stand in the bathroom to be able to dry yourself, litrally had to go into the bedroom via the very loud SQUEEKY DOOR to be able to do that. It Said toiletries included - NONE THERE AT ALL.( we always take our own anyway). There were NO Glasses to be able to have our own drink(s), had to ask following day. Reluctant to give them. The house and Room decor and the bedding is way out of date.. talking cream lamp shades with tassles on and old fashioned bedding and carpets and curtains. Said there was FREE Parking advertised on booking - NONE ! HAD TO PARK 600 Yrds away and Pay ! DONT STAY HERE ! ITS AWFUL. 22/08/2025- 25-3-2025. AND DONT HAVE A CREAM TEA! Small shop bought.

The hotel has his peculiar Victorian style, which we absolutely loved! Super clean and tidy, everything in the hotel was looked after and very well maintained. Just perfect! We enjoy staying somewhere with character and it definitely has that !and it was super clean .lynmouth is beautiful and there is plenty to do in the area we reckon the circular walk to Watersmeet and Countisbury and also the riding sun pub if you want a fancy meal We would definitely stay again Thankyou 🙂

Darren (8/5): 3 Night Stay During Busy Summer Holiday Period - The Captain’s House is set in a picturesque location. We stayed in the room which was accessed from the pretty garden via a spiral staircase. We were made to feel welcome from the time we arrived to the time we departed. The host was fully of local knowledge and pointed us to the places to visit. The breakfast was fair and the room dated but this is what we expected and this added to the unique charm. The only downside was the parking was not onsite but was along the lane next to the river and B&B, so once you had a spot to park, you couldn’t move your car, as spaces were sparse during the day. Also Lynmouth was busy and all bars and restaurants were fully booked, so had to take chance by eating early outside. There are great walks from the B&B to the Valley of the Rocks and following the river up the valley to Watersmeet, Rockford. Would we stay again, yes is the answer.
David (8/5): The captain's house. - Family run business for over 30 years , lovely historic building right along the river lyn , Clifford the owner very helpful and knowledgeable about the history of the building and devon in general, we both had a lovely stay.
Verified traveler (4/5): Unless you are desperate for N Devon, go elsewhere - The guy who runs the hotel is fine - just treat is little foibles with a pinch of salt. He’s old school, and is actually quite helpful regarding trip advice etc. The hotel itself is a stereotype of terrible British coastal bed and breakfasts. Damp smelling, fairly dirty, tiny rooms, outdated decor, no toiletries (and little toilet paper), horrible carpets, lumpy beds, leaky pipes etc. The ‘continental’ breakfast is cardboard toast and a limited range of cereals (i.e. a British breakfast from the 1970s); the full English breakfast is ok, but the sausages and egg aren’t great. North Devon isn’t a cheap place to stay of course, but at £140 per night this hotel is still not good value for money. Were it £70 per night it would be ok.

The property could do with a declutter. Initially there was a mix-up with our booking and we were shown to the wrong room, so not a good start. Breakfast was served too late - we were walking SWCP and needed an early start.

Daniel (10/5): End of May Bank Holiday Stay - We had an amazing 3 nights and very thankful for the advice of our host for some places to visit and see. Great setting, easy to park and its was a wonderful place to stay with sounds of the river. It's a traditional B&B/Guest house setup, owner operated, clean rooms, powerful shower and very comfortable. I've seen some unsavourily reviews, I'd suggest take them with a pinch of salt, if you are expecting a London style hotel, then you are not going to get that here. But if you are looking to be welcomed into someones home, staying within a stones through of the river Lyn, a short walk from Watersmeet and the town, then this is for you. Thankful to have found "The Captains House" and will return in the future, thank you!
Susan (8/5): Beautiful Lynmouth - The Captains House was very comfortable, the standard on suite room was on the small side but ample room for our stay. Cleanliness was to a high standard and the hosts very friendly and knowledgeable about the area . We would definitely stay again.

Other reviews mentioning very hard and uncomfortable beds and poor standard of breakfast are accurate. There was nothing luxury about the luxury room. Rooms would be OK at less than half the price, but at the price set it is not value for money.

The photos give you a good idea of what it is like, we can only booked it as there was nowhere else. And finally really expensive!!

Breakfast was disappointing, I told him I was veggie and received a full English so had half a tomato and mushroom on cold toast. My other half who’s a meat eater was dissatisfied with the breakfast as well.. There was no hot water so couldn’t have a bath or wash my hair the whole duration. Mattress was uncomfortable and could feel every movement from my partner. Travelled a long way for a very uncomfortable experience.

Ian (8/5): Stay was nice but room confusion - Checking in wasn’t a problem, it went smoothly until we were showed our room; it was a twin room without a balcony. I had booked the double bed balcony suite for me and my partner but we were told that it had already been booked. Not sure if this is a mistake by Expedia online or if this was a double booking made by the B&B. They did however give us the Captains room which Was comfy enough and had an en suite which is what we intitially booked the room for (we don’t like shared bathrooms). All in all the stay was pleasant with no problems throughout. Would stay again :)
john (6/5): Room and walks - Room was very good. Breakfast didn't have much choice of things. There are loads of very good walks. Waters meet,valley of the rocks,the beach walk at hunters inn. If you decide to book a room at the captains house don't believe what it says about paying when you get there as if you give your card details you will find multiple transactions of payment even though you didn't ok it. Do not give your card details to them or give them one didjet out.
caroline (4/5): Ripped off ! - Booked last minute on line. Booking included private bathroom and breakfast. On arrival 8.30 pm at night we were met by the owner who confirmed our booking as shared bathroom. I queried and said we had booked a private bathroom. He offered us an ensuite but for an extra 20 Pounds. Being late and not likly to find anywhere else we paid. The ensuite was a sink in the corner of the room with a tiny room housing the shower and toilet across the landing. The room was clean and looked over ghe river. Bed was comfy, with tv. Breakfast was served crammed into a tiny dinning room. Cereals, toast and full english. Eggs hard, bacon brittle, mushrooms pastvtheir best, cheapest of sausages, and tomatoe. Tea was barely tea, very weak. Parking was a long way up the road. All in all we Will not be returning. Returned home to find our confirmation stated a private bathroom. Sent confirmation to owner but no response. Basically the location is excellent, accomodation clean, breakfast poor with the exception of the toast, parking not easy, but being ripped off by the owner leaves a bad feeling not to be repeated. I understand from other reviews we are not the only ones.

Simon (4/5): Unnecessarily unfriendly host. - This is a good value, cheap B&B, my room was very small and basic but functional and met my needs. The host was incredibly unfriendly and dismissive though. If you work in the hospitality industry you should be polite and helpful. I heard the lady interacting nicely with other guests but I didn't interact directly with her. The male host appeared grumpy and unhelpful throughout my brief stay.
Dougal (8/5): Nice little hotel in scenic location. - I had a pleasant week here with Josie and Clifford, the owners. Just as well I had a small car though: parking is 'on road', no allocated spaces, go where you can, which can be some way up, and Tors Rd is VERY NARROW. Small cars need to use caution, large ones will have - and cause - problems! Breakfast was nice, but I think they make their name more on Josie's cakes and very good cream teas. Breakfast was 8 / 8.30 ish,but early starters can opt to swop breakfast for a packed lunch. I wasn't en suite - the cheaper rooms aren't - but I only shared the shower with one other room. BUT one of the en suite rooms had a bath in it which took up a lot of hot water leaving little for anyone else. But my room was very nice, comfy and clean, with the usual tea / coffee makings and TV, a lovely view from the window AND had the bedlight OVER the bed where bedlights should be, but so often arent, so I could read - hurrah - which made up for the room light being in the corner over the wardrobe. But charming old properties have their quirks, and this old property is rather charming. And has interesting history starting with the name, though there isn't space to go into that here. Anyone wanting to learn more will have to visit and see for themselves. A good place for walkers - turn left out of gate and follow nose for not quite 2 miles to Watersmeet or take cliff railway to Lynton and visit Valley of Rocks. Verified traveler (2/5): Stay away. - When I first arrived I thought I had made a terrible mistake booking the twin room it was dark dingy had a view of a dirty wall, the towels and bedding were old and worn and it was generally one of the worst rooms I have ever staid in. When I got home and looked at the listing again I realised that I had not made a mistake and that the listing for the room I booked is inaccurate. The pictures of the room shown on expedia which are, I must admit, rather beautiful, were taken else where in the building. The room spec clearly says it comes with a private bathroom but neglects to mention its on the floor below and is shared with other people. On the booking screen where you can reserve the room the reserve button is a different colour to all the others, Indicating this is the only room there where you must make full payment in advance. I was only booked for one night, and it was clear that by paying extra money I could have got one of the other rooms that are apparently not dreadful. However we figured hey its just one night we can put up with this. So my friend woke up at three in the morning having dreamt she found the disembowelled body of only half dead cat in her backpack. The kettle was ugly inside, and not something I would use and well I find myself wondering how long has same water been sitting in it. Verified traveler (6/5): Comfortable B & B with Victorian decor. - The Captain's House is a small B & B with Victorian decor set by the river East Lyn in the small seaside village of Lynmouth. Its location makes it ideal for walking holidays or for exploring the Exmoor National Park.
Ruth (10/5): Much more than a guest house - The owners were very informative about the surrounding area and the best places and times to eat and visit points of interest I would recommend anyone going to lynmouth to book into the captains as you will find it a very pleasant experience.

Kim (6/5): Breakfast was a joke! - This property, although very quirky, is in desperate need of some investment. The bed was uncomfortable with pillows as flat as pancakes. In fairness it was clean and had a lovely view of the river which was just as well as the TV was not in a watchable position. The breakfast was the worst that I have had in an any guesthouse I have ever stayed in....awful! The whole experience gave the feeling of maximum profit for mimimum effort and outlay. A real shame as the location could make this place a real goldmine for someone who cared.
Sandy (6/5): Nice accommodation on the river - Room was very nice and clean but no bathroom en-suite. There were no cupboards or wardrobe, only a rail across the corner of the walls. The owners were very friendly, helpful and the breakfast was very nice. Only parking space for one car otherwise you parked on the street.
Ellie (8/5): Clean accommodation with good breakfast. - Two day stay, mid week. Property a little dated, no en-suite. B & B as it used to be. Friendly and breakfast very good. Local knowledge and tips for things to do. Luxury it's not, but the property is clean, the owner friendly and the location is stunning.

Richard (8/5): Lynmouth overnighter - Quick visit to Lynmouth....cheapest hotel on offer..got a good night's sleep and breakfast was typically English....absolute fabulous location. Friendly owner. We'll go back some time.
