Guest Reviews
- Tim (5/5): Mum and Son keeping up appearances - Proximity to Ten Tors The food, the cold bedroom, the exit light in the bedroom that prevented sleep, the bedding, the size of the TV, the dysfunctional WiFi
- David (9/5): -
- Iles (9/5): - Friendly good food
- Griffths (9/5): Friendly, convenient, charming room, easy parking - Friendly staff Flex for kettle was too short. ( thats all)
- Chris (9/5): Enjoyable stay in lovely pub – very friendly staff and excellent food – dinner and breakfast. - Excellent stay. Very friendly staff welcomed us and the service during our stay was very good. The rooms were clean and comfortable.
Lovely atmosphere in the bar and the dinner and breakfast were excellent.
- Stephen (7/5): A beautiful place to stay if you want to experience rural Devon. - Location and staff were very friendly. Enjoyed chat with the locals in the pub. The green emergency light was permanently on made it very difficult to sleep. Toilet did not flush properly and the hot water was only warm and not enough pressure to run a bath.
- Josepha (9/5): Lovely comfortable pub for an overnight stay en route further south. - Really friendly and helpful staff. Lively atmosphere in the bar in the evening. Excellent dinner and freshly cooked breakfast. Nothing not to like.
- Jemimah (7/5): I would stay again - The bed was comfy, the food was excellent and I felt welcomed by the staff. I was able to self check out without any trouble, and appreciated the flexibility with this.
The room and bathroom were clean, modern and cosy, and warmed up quickly once the radiator was on. I appreciated the coffee station in the room and was surprised (in a good way) with just how quiet the road outside got as the evening went on. I didn’t love the emergency lighting opposite the bed - it has a small green light even when off that felt very bright when I was trying to sleep. I didn’t figure out the bathroom light/fan switch combination until the morning, so thought the light had gone to start with.

- Micah (4/5): - Staff friendly, food and drinks very good, historic and beautiful building. Chef is doing good things. Best for eating and drinking, not staying. Unfortunately rooms were pretty unclean, shower almost worthless and cold, room cold, common areas worn. Needs to be renovated then would be 10/10. At the moment would strongly avoid staying there again.
- Kelly (9/5): Excellent night away, great room. Dinner was excellent, lots of choice and great value for money. Excellent cooked break - Lovely clean room
Great food- dinner and breakfast
- Simon (8/5): - Staff were brilliant food was amazing The green emergency light in the bedroom too bright
- Shirley (8/5): Super staff, excellent food, prime area to get to many parts of Devon and Exeter. Plumbing needs sorting asap. - Old thatched property with clean rooms and a good bar area and restaurant.
Lovely landlady, great food and cosy pub with log burner.
All staff went out of their way to make us comfortable and welcome. No heating at all in the bathroom and very low pressure shower.
Room was not made up or cleaned during following day and damp towels left on our return.
- Jeffrey (4/5): Expensive - Floors were unlevel. Breakfast was good but expensive on top of cost of room.
- Carl (9/5): Great Place - Room was Clean cand warm, food was very good and staff very friendly
- Delphine (10/5): Lovely room, fabulous breakfast, plenty of parking, nice beer garden and the brilliant staff. - Breakfast was fabulous, cooked to order, asked how you would like your eggs cooked, the bacon was lovely, fresh coffee and orange juice, homemade bread used to make the toast.
- Tamsyn (9/5): Kate and Rich are excellent hosts and we will continue to visit and stay! - The breakfast and food was brilliant as always!
- skaoje (7/5): Comfortable stay in Cheriton Bishop - Cute comfortable stay, comfortable bed, quirky befitting the old nature of the pub, friendly staff and excellent food. Exactly what we needed for the stay. Water pressure in the shower wasn't great and the temperature wasn't consistent.
- Beatrice (9/5): -
- deakin (9/5): -
- Tanya (10/5): Great place to stay, lovely and clean and cosy - Lovely friendly place to stay
- Joanna (6/5): Lovely staff, excellent food, very cold bed-room with a terrible shower! - The location was fine and the staff were so kind and helpful, which was very much appreciated. The evening meal was lovely and it was great to have the wood-burner to thaw by. The real downside was the freezing cold bedroom whose decor had seen better days - both portable and fixed radiator were very slow and the bathroom towel rail didn't work so the bathroom was icy. The shower was desperately poor, its power too weak to really wash by. During one of the first really cold winter weeks, this was a bit depressing. (The downstairs Ladies loo was appalling! Bubbling damp and black mould - someone needs to do something about this and the upstairs heating asap!)
- Sharyn (9/5): - Great breakfast cooked to order with quality ingredients. Private access after hours if required. Private car park. We didn't have lunch or an evening meal as we were visiting friends but the menu looked good and reasonably priced. Staff very welcoming.
- Louise (10/5): Great food lovely friendly staff. - Lovely friendly staff. Great food. Room was well equipped and very clean. Nothing.
- Stephen (9/5): Lovely overnight stay with excellent food. - Helpful hostess, excellent dinner and breakfast. Lovely soft fluffy towels. Creaky floors,
- Beverley (6/5): Over all it was a lovely pub no staff for evening meal accommodation was lovely but on arrival we were told no evening m - Welcoming bedroom was lovely Tv was tiny and couldn’t get any channels to work
- Martin (8/5): -
- mfmuers (8/5): just right -
- J H (6/5): - Great food great staff The green emergency light in the room is way too bright and I'm afraid it kept me awake. Sadly, after staying with you 2 consecutive years I wouldn't do it again if the green light remains.
- Gerry (8/5): A good find for our walking weekend, very hospitable and lovely food - Everything Nothing
- Aurelie (10/5): - Gentillesse du personnel, disponibilité
- Helen (9/5): Good nights sleep, fantastic food and lovely team - We ate dinner at the pub and then breakfast in the morning, the food was exceptional.
The team were really wonderful and gave fantastic service.
The room was really comfortable and we had a good nights sleep. Its not an uber modern room, but just as pictured on the booking.com page The emergency light in the bedroom was a bit bright - we covered it with a towel so it didn't disturb our sleep.
- Chris (10/5): - The food and friendly staff. The stairs needed a good hoover
- Robert (8/5): Welcoming, friendly, kindly staffed, comfortable. - Breakfast was provided on request for my room. It was just what I wanted/needed. Nothing.
- Holly (4/5): Disappointing - Decent bed and helpful staff. Good parking. The pub smelt very badly of fish. The shower was very week and not hot
- Anne (8/5): Very good -
- John (9/5): Superb -
- Suzy (9/5): An excellent inn for a short stay. Highly recommend the food. - Excellent food, quality produce. The staff were helpful and professional. Traffic noise from the road and the sound of running water in the pipes, disturbed sleep.
- Ian (8/5): Great food beer and atmosphere - Friendly pub with great beers and excellent food. Water not hot
- Greg (9/5): Lovely getaway - Fantastic location, lovely room (room 4), staff were very friendly, food was excellent, friendly atmosphere in the pub Poor WiFi

- Christine (10/5): Exceptional - Had a large family gathering and lunch as well as staying overnight. Everyone was warm and friendly.
- Tracy (9/5): Excellent - We attended a wedding near by, it was a great location. Breakfast was great, you could pick your time and it was freshly cooked. Staff friendly and helpful. It is a minor problem,we stayed two nights but our coffee/tea in the room was not replenished.
- Georgia (8/5): Very good -
- Paula (3/5): Poor - The few staff we saw were pleasant but too busy The wifi did not reach our room and the bathroom window did not shut
- Jack (8/5): Highly recommend this place! - The room and bathroom were a decent size. Staff were super attentive and went out of their way to resolve any queries.
Breakfast that was included was very good!
Great location with a pleasant beer garden. Our room was situated above the kitchen/bar which was surprisingly quiet from 10pm. However, a generator switched on and off throughout the night and morning which was slightly disruptive.
The shower water pressure was fairly weak.
- Carol (8/5): Very good -
- Gail (8/5): Very good -
- Adrian (10/5): Lovely clean accommodation lovely food and really helpful and accommodating staff - Cleanliness, full of character and charm, staff couldn't do enough to make you feel welcome Nothing
- Jillian (7/5): Over priced for standard of room 😕 - Nice comfy bed, great quality bedding and towels, welcoming staff, good evening and breakfast. Mouldy shower curtain, water very slow to come through warm in sink, definitely needs a fresh coat of paint, or redecorating especially when paying £150 for the night , dirty windows inside with webs
- Faye (10/5): Fabulous staff and great Inn - a real find - The Old Thatch Inn is a little treasure. The room and bedding were clean and like new.
The staff were incredible Jay at the bar makes you feel at home the minute you arrive.
The table waiting staff are attentive and personable and
Matt the brilliant and talented chef does an excellent job. The dinner and breakfast were exceptional.
Will return, no doubt and we are planning a big gathering for their Sunday roasts Nothing
- Vesper (10/5): Staff were fabulous. Breakfast was great. Room really comfortable. - I was attending a wedding nearby. The team allowed early access to the room so we could get ready for the wedding. The room was very comfortable and the breakfast was great. Watch out for the low ceiling. Eventhough it said 'mind your head', and I'm short, I banged my head! Tables were sticky from varnish rather than a hygiene issue.
- Sara (7/5): Lovely welcoming stay would book again - It’s cuteness Hot Water a little cool
- Jo (8/5): Lovely pub stay - Great location for visiting historic sites in the area. Not much to the village but a lovely pub with great food. All good
- Helen (7/5): Devon stay - Friendly, clean, quiet Lovely big room but the TV didn't work, the toilet seat moved, no cleaning after the first night and no milk with the tea and coffee in room. At 150 per night l would expect better.
- Shelley (7/5): Good -
- Trevor (8/5): Very good - Excellent service, and welcome. We were the only ones for breakfast and had great personal service from the chef.
- Hanna (10/5): Very comfortable stay - The room was comfortable and the pub lively and friendly. Food was great and we were amazed that they came in in the morning to make us cooked breakfast even though we were the only people staying.
Also we really appreciated staff asking if we would like a thermos of milk so that we could make a coffee in the room in the morning.
Location is good, easy to drive to.

- Alan (9/5): Superb -
- Nan (9/5): Superb -
- Helen (10/5): Exceptional - I did not know what to expect, as it had not been recommended by anyone, so when I arrived, I was pleasantly surprised. The tavern was charming and buzzing with locals. The host was very welcoming. We felt instantly at home. We had a drink at the bar and met the clientele who were so friendly. We met a lady who grows her own vegetables and so loves her local that she brings surplas vegetables to the pub for them to use in their restaurant. We didn't know what to expect with the food, but it was incredible. My daughter is a high end chef and she was bowled over by the food. The local, fresh, organic, untravelled vegetables were exquisit. What a little hidden gem in the heart of Devon but only 20 minutes from Exeter Airport where we had to catch a plane back to Jersey. I will definitely use this
- Carolyn (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sara (8/5): Pretty thatched pub - Lovely old thatched pub. Good breakfast For the price for 1 night I had hoped there would have been toiletries and a hairdryer. Milk for tea and coffee would have meant we could have had a hot drink in our room.
- Simon (9/5): Great stay great hospitality would stay again - The bed was very comfortable and it was also cozy The beautiful rooms have the green exit lights in them it ruins the decor
- Marta (9/5): Comfortable, good food, easy parking. - Super comfy bed, great breakfast and lovely staff.
- Parsons (6/5): It was ok for one night. Wouldn’t want to stay any longer. - Quaint property. Friendly staff. Food was lovely. We were up in the roof space and a very tight staircase to get up and down with no handrail. Reduced head height across most of it. My husband struggled in there also he couldn’t stand up in the shower.
- Anonymous (5/5): Adequate, but wouldn’t stay again - Clean, good sized, comfy bed. Very loud (understandably above a pub) but really loud until 12am on a Thursday evening wasn’t expected.
Lock on the door was very difficult to use, hardly nearly came off multiple times.
Expensive for what it was.
- Tina (10/5): Great staff, food amazing and comfortable stay - Great welcome - manager and staff superb - pub has great atmosphere - room 1 super cosy and comfortable and the shower is amazing ! Nothing
