Guest Reviews
- Eva (10/5): Recharged in the jungle and refreshed in the natural pools - The hosts were so fun and friendly!!! They were extremely helpful with getting oriented to the island and the immediate local area. The setting is immaculate — remote and completely immersed in the high mountain jungle in Marigot just north of Kalinago Territory. It was stellar to ground the first few days in Dominica and get connected with the plants, cascades, birds, sun, and cleansing storm patterns at night. We chose to stay mostly off of our phones to match the energy of what the space was offering us, and it worked like a retreat where you completely connect back into nature and its cycles. We are forever grateful for Roots and the love that goes into running the space!! N/A
- Bettina (10/5): Beautiful jungle getaway - The remote location was beautiful and the home cooked meals were delicious. Our host was very helpful with hikes and information. The room was spacious and had a nice porch with great jungle views. The 4 wheel drive road getting there was a bit of a challenge but the little 4 wheel drive Nissan made it.
- Ian (10/5): Immersed in forest - Forest location Nothing
- Zoltan (10/5): - We had an amazing stay in this jungle retreat! Surrounded by nature, it’s truly a serene and beautiful place. The hosts are incredibly warm and helpful, and they offer delicious breakfast and dinner. They’re also very knowledgeable about the area and the island. The only thing to keep in mind is that you'll need a 4x4 vehicle to reach the location, as it’s very remote. Trust me, there is NO way you can reach it in a 2WD vehicle. Overall, it was an unforgettable experience! Should've stayed longer 😅
- Karin (10/5): -
- Ponce (10/5): one in a lifetime experience that I recommend to any nature lover. - We stayed 2 nights and we loved it! It was the cutest place for a couple to enjoy nature. We woke up everyday with the sound of parrots and had a home-made breakfast prepared by Guadalupe and her beautiful family.
We explored the surroundings, discovered hidden river pools and enjoyed the peace of being truly immersed in nature.
A note on the access road: it takes around 15/20 min to get there. Totally enjoyable and doable with a 4WD and absolutely worth it!
- LOMBION (7/5): -
- Alexander Hektorsson (10/5): A magical experience - The retreat is located in the middle of the jungle. At night it's magical. You can hear the waterfall and all the sounds of the rain forest. You have your own waterfall; surrounded by lush vegetation which makes you think you are in a shampoo TV add! The cottages are lovely and much better equipped than what I had imagined. Private bathroom with hot shower! Meals are abundant; nutricious and tasty. Ask for Martin's contract details of you want to visit the many highlights Dominica has to offer. If you are looking for extreme luxury this is not the place. On the other hand if you are looking for an experience that will blow your mind: This is a place. I have travelled a lot and few things wow me but this place is simply magical.
Presque minable . Lit petit140 pour 2 pers. Moustiquaire déchirée. Robinetterie totalement has been. Montée des marches dangereuses . Rien n'est amélioré visiblement depuis très longtemps.
- Jack (10/5): The best place I've ever been to let go of stress and indulge in the beauty of nature. - Wow! If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the world, this is the place. The setting is absolutely gorgeous and so peaceful. I came burnt out from work and found the perfect place to let go and renew. There's internet in the morning and the afternoon, but otherwise it's a perfect invitation to disconnect from tech. Plus it's a tough walk out if you don't have a vehicle, so again you just have to unwind and soak in the nature. Sitting in the river helped! Malik and Jennie were wonderfully generous and helpful. The water pressure in the shower could have been better. (But it also didn't occur to me to complain about it, so perhaps it could have been fixed.)
- Lisa (9/5): Perfect week ! - It is a fantastic place! Guadalupe, martin and malik took really good care of us while we were there for our honeymoon! We got so many recommendations for sightseeing! The food of guadalupe was amazing, so fresh and out of her own garden. Every night a different new dish, and she even was mindful of my glutenallergy.
It's an offroad, so you really need a 4x4 to drive the road, but with our suzuki Jimny, that was no problem at all! Not really a bad point but be aware that you are in the middle of the rainforest so clothes might not really dry.
- Kate (9/5): Superb - Hosts were so helpful and kind! Helped us with an issue with our car. Lots of great info on activities. Fun stay in a jungle environment. Delicious homemade meals The only thing is the road is slow to the property, but the privacy is unbeatable
- Muttke (6/5): Pleasant - a quiet place, silence and nice people, there is real nature, greenery in the middle of the forest access is very difficult, you need an off-road vehicle, no internet and no electricity after 10 p.m. it's difficult when you come back late for the night
- Jacquelyn (10/5): Exceptional - Very nice staff and delicious food. Everything comes right from the garden. Recommend getting the dinner as there aren't many food options in the area. This is the quieter side of the island so longer drives to go do things but we found it 100% worth it for the tranquility. There are also several trails on property to explore. We only had time for one, but when we got to the falls we had it completely to ourselves. If you aren't comfortable off road driving this isn't the place for you. We timed it and it takes 18 minutes to go up the dirt road to get here and we did bottom out a few times despite driving very slowly. Again, we felt it was worth it for the tranquility but the road is not for the faint of heart.
- Nell (8/5): Beautiful spot. - We wanted to get away from it all, hike in rainforest and swim in crystal clear rivers. It delivered all this and as a bonus we saw parrots. A really special place. Recommend. The staff were lovely and so kind and friendly so I hate to criticise but the dinners were disappointing. The first one had no protein at all.
- Steve (9/5): Superb - The location of this accommodation was amazing. You are surrounded by miles of jungle and remote farms. The hosts were fantastic.
A unique experience and we loved it As said before in previous reviews. You need a 4x4 / Awd car to navigate the two mile track to the accommodation . Take supplies as a trip to the nearest shop would be a major expedition but this all adds to the remote jungle experience
- Marit (10/5): We absolutely loved EVERYTHING about Roots!! The Roots experience MADE our trip to Dominica! We already have plans to go -
- Oliver (10/5): Will remember our stay at Roots very fondly! A highlight of our trip and can definitely recommend it! - Amazing place in the middle of the rainforest! Guadalupe and her family are so great at inviting you into their little slice of paradise (the dinners she cooks are also definitely worth it) It is remote, but we had a baby of 9 months along and she loved it 😊 The road to get there is tricky. Rent a 4WD (no joke), but worth it once you arrive.
- Mark (10/5): Wonderfully relaxing jungle retreat - Beautiful place to relax and immerse yourself in nature in the Dominican jungle.
Guadalupe and Martin and their family are amazing hosts, the food is fresh, local and delicious and the place itself is stunning.
The road up is an adventure but if I can drive it, anyone can!
- Daire (9/5): Superb - Super staff.
- John (9/5): Wonderful quiet retreat. No bugs. Lovely family hosts. Would return. - Breakfast a bit light. Location what we expected. Lovely jungle retreat Breakfast choices. Everything else wonderful.
- Daniel (10/5): Magical, a once in a lifetime experience - This is a totally magical place. I cannot say how wonderful it was to experience the jungle with such a level of comfort (wi-fi, warm shower, attractive accommodation, everything ecologically powered) - it's just superb. The hosts are lovely, the food is excellent. The jungle walks are just amazing. The excursion to Kalinago Territory and Spanny Pool was perfect. It's such a relaxing and beautiful place and the song of the frogs at night is one of the most beautiful things you will ever hear. And there are parrots and hummingbirds! I highly recommend it. N/A
- Sophia (10/5): Exceptional - beautiful location, landscaping and great hosts. meals were delicious, they were so accommodating of requests and a wonderful friendly family nothing! just be aware wifi is limited (it was not surprising with the type of stay it was)
- Lindsay (10/5): Exceptional - Peaceful nature
- Hubert (10/5): Beautiful - Beautiful place in the heart of nature. Calm and quiet. It's an ideal place to wind down from everyday life. There was no compromises on the basic comforts : hot shower, fully equipped kitchen, comfortable beds, plumbing sanitation (no dry toilets),...
FYI we were there in November: we did not need A/C at all, all the contrary, we used the provided blanket.
The Guests are extremely friendly and accommodating. It served for us as a beautiful exemple of living off the grid and set a new standard for how we picture our future life.. You really need to have an SUV to get there. Internet was inconsistent and only electricity at certain times of the day when they are on generator. (There is electricity all day long when the hydro-electric power works, tho)
The "pool" is a river you can bath in.
For us, all of this was part of the experience in a positive way but it might not be for everyone.
- Gr (10/5): Great place to have a unique experience, surrounded by beautiful nature, and welcoming hosts.Superb! - Guadalupe Martin and their kids are fantastic hosts, full of good conversations and vibes. The whole place is beautifully built surrounded by nature. We appreciated the time without electricity and internet, which made us feel totally immerse in nature. We loved everything
- Rubia (9/5): Superb - If you're looking to disconnect from the busy life, noise or concrete buildings or you just want to be at peace and embrace the beauty of nature, Roots Jungle retreat is the prefect place. I enjoyed every minute I was there the tranquility, yet the musical vibes of the bird and other animals. Guadeloupe and Martin the hosts are very friendly and helpful not forgetting their 2 kids who loves to entertain and be entertained, lovely family! A Great get away!!
- Nancy (9/5): Perfect place to enjoy the peace and beauty of nature - Fantastic, friendly, helpful hosts; attractive and comfortable apartments; small scale; breakfast and dinner (optional but highly recommended) in the open kitchen area; some hikes possible Off-the-beaten-track is a plus, but difficult access road makes it harder to get back and forth to explore and hike other island areas. 4WD absolutely essential.
- Chris (9/5): Superb - Amazing place in the rainforest. We were able to ha e a great relax and some nice walks.
- Claudia (10/5): Highly recommend - We had a wonderfull time in Roots and would definitely recommend it (for nature lovers). With a 4x4 the road is OK (rented at courtesy) and lead to beautiful cottages in the tropical rainforest. The cottage was very clean, comfortable beds and nice balcony with hammock and amazing view. The cooking of guadeloupe is very good so would recommend to join for dinner. Also, because you're isolated with a road that we didn't want to do in the dark. Hiking in the surrounding rainforest (especially to secret pool) is very nice and they gave us excellent tips for the area. We were also interested in eco farm and guadeloupe/martin advised which one to visit. Supercool to see how al the fruits/spices grow. We had a wonderfull time at Roots! Would recommend to go with a rented car to roots, so you're flexible (for example also for lunch)
- Judith (10/5): A wonderful way to connect with nature in the rain forest. - Our hosts were terrific. Knowledgeable and helpful. The location is beautiful and a chance to truly connect with nature. I loved listening to the birds, seeing the stars and sunrise over the trees. And the occasional downpour! It isn’t right for every traveler, though. There is only electricity from 4-10 PM and there aren’t lounge chairs. The only problem for us was the road, which is treacherous and made us reluctant to come and go. I’d say perfect for a 2-3 night stay or for someone who doesn’t mind driving on very rough roads.
- Gregor (10/5): Exceptional -
- David (10/5): The place I will always long to return to. Perfect 10/10. - This is, simply put, the best accommodation I have ever booked, ran by the best hosts I ever met. Nothing and nobody tops it, an absolutely unique, dream-like location on this globe, and far better even compared to what I expected. Nature-lovers, waterfall fans, jungle fanatics, hikers, escapists, dreamers, look no further, this is the place and the deal you have been looking for.
- Nan (9/5): very special place with amazing hosts! everything is natural and there are several jungle hikes right from the accommoda - unique and special experience in the heart of the jungle! self sustaining eco tourist heaven unfortunately the electricity was out except for 4-10pm while we were there. owners were working hard to get the system back (I think it should be back 24/7 soon)
- Elizabeth (10/5): Exceptional - Our family of 5 thoroughly enjoyed our two nights at Roots Jungle Retreat. The property is surrounded in nature with a river and natural pool running through it. The accommodations were top notch with beautiful wood furniture, comfortable beds, and all so very clean. Guadalupe and Martin were very welcoming and kind and take a lot of pride in their property. Guadalupe provided meals that were fresh, healthy and delicious!! We enjoyed walking the trails around Roots, it was a very relaxing stay. We truly felt like we were in a fairy tale!
- Christoph (8/5): Very good -
- Shannon (9/5): Jungle Lodge Set in Northern Forest Reserve - The surrounding nature in the middle of the Northern Forest Reserve was absolutely astounding. It was so beautiful and peaceful! The host, Guadeloupe, was ultra friendly and helpful. She was a fountain of information about location guides and sightseeing. She was also an excellent cook. Breakfast was included in our rate, but we also had dinner there both nights of our stay and it was delicious and healthy! A tricky 2.5 km off-road drive that required 4WD to get from the main road to the lodge.
- Golo (10/5): Exceptional - The hosts are extremely friendly, welcoming, and helpful. Breakfast and dinner are freshly prepared with local and/or self-grown incredients (super delicious!). The location in the middle of untouched nature is absolutely astonishing! Travel advice given by the hosts were perfect - wish our stay would have been longer ; ) See you next time! --
- Chris (6/5): great place if you are prepared for a jungle retreat - location was awesome. peaceful and beautiful. the sounds of the river, birds, especially the parrots were lovely. Power was not always available. no wifi in rooms. hot water was not easily regulated. the road to the property requires a 4X4 and good nerves
- Jeffrey (10/5): Overall, we had a very relaxing and enjoyable 3 nights stay - Guadeloupe and Martin, the owners, made us feel very welcome and made our stay enjoyable. The property was very nice, the natural pools. We really enjoyed the location of being deep in the jungle
- Heather (10/5): Our favourite stay! 💚🌴🌺🇩🇲 - Roots is a very special place and we thoroughly enjoyed the time we spent here. It is the perfect ‘escape’, surrounded by nature in a beautiful part of the island.
Guadalupe and Martin welcomed us warmly and were exceptionally kind throughout our stay. They helped us to plan our trip, including booking a guide for Boiling Lake, organising a driver for other activities and sharing many recommendations. Guadalupe also cooked delicious meals for us; she is a brilliant cook and it was great to try so much local produce, including lots of produce grown at Roots. Guadalupe was so friendly and helpful - the whole family were lovely!
We enjoyed the walking trails around Roots and swam in the local pools and the on-site nature pool - a perfect way to spend a relaxing day.
We really can’t recommend Roots highly enough. We were sorry to leave and hope to return again one day.
Thank you so much for making our Dominica trip so memorable! Nothing. It was perfect.
- Doug (10/5): Exceptional -
